Getting Older And Switch Is My Vibe

As time passes more and more, I really feel less interested in "mature" games.

I am a new owner of a Switch and the library is near perfect. I used to shun Nintendo because it was just "kiddie" games and always underpowered.

Now I want more than ever games like Zelda and Pokemon and stuff like the Trials of Mana remake. I even want to give Animal House a spin.

To me all these adult games all feel the same in a way. It's like "oh there's Laura Bailey again" because apparently there's a severe shortage of western voice actors.

Case in point, I just watched some vids of the Switch remake of Links Awakening and I immediately fell in love.

If I weren't broke, Links Awakening would have been bought by me right now.

I love the top-down Zelda games so how did I not know this existed?

Furthermore, I'm finding Bloodstained very enjoyable although I'm not sure if that counts.

Anyone else burned out on all the Call if Duties and Red Dead Redemptions and just feeling like good ol'e Mario and Zelda now?

There's a certain kind of gaming experience you can only have with Nintendo. For the other stuff, you can pick between a Playstation, Xbox or PC. But nobody does Nintendo except Nintendo. Not saying they're the better alternative (though I personally think they are), just saying their whole THING is very unique and that's why people tend to fall in love with the Switch.

Do give Animal Crossing a shot.

Tom Nook's fraternity days were pretty wild.

Link's Awakening remake is fantastic. The game has a ton of charm. Simultaneously whimsical and melancholy. One of my favorites. Minor performance issues when entering and leaving buildings but nothing that would make it unpleasant to play.
Yeah I've never played the original. I was actually pretty awestruck by the way the game looked.

Maybe it's just me trying to cope with the very bad anxiety and depression I'm going through, but the colors and art I right away loved.

This is one of the few games I really hope to get asap. It's making me love Zelda games all over again.

I probably viewed over 400 eShop Switch games on sale and the only games that stood out were games I’ve finished in the last 5-10 years. I had $20 to spend so I browsed the 3DS eShop. Most of those games are either $19.99 USD or $39.99. Then I browse the Virtual Console. Most of those games I own. I have Zelda and Mario folders on my 3DS and they are filled to the brim. This time I see more and more SNES games on there, but I can’t actually play them because I have an XL and not a new 3DS. I decide to surf the eShop on my Wii U. A handful of games I own already and the ones that are left are Wii games for $19.99. Not a single game on sale on there looked good and everything else was going to cost more than my $20.

Nintendo does well with retro games. It’s just frustrating to be an eager consumer because they’ll always come out on top. The countless shovelware on their eShop can feel like an eyesore. No offense. When I’m playing Ocarina of Time or Super Mario Land on my 3DS, that’s when it truly shines. Knowing that Nintendo would rather put out Pokémon games in 5 different languages than have a decent sale is what makes it frustrating. I’d honestly buy more digital DS games, but that’s like striking gold in a coal mine. Overall, as I get older, Nintendo becomes more like an accountant selling games. Their main focus is making sure you pay full price for a first party Nintendo title that’s been out on the market for years on end. I enjoy my Switch, but a lot of what I have are ports. I really like my Wii U VC because it has a ton of good content to it. Super Metroid, Golden Sun, and Fire Emblem. I enjoy playing Resident Evil Remake, DMC3SE and DOOM 3 on my Switch. Those of course, are mature games. I have a digital copy of Phantasy Star and recently the Mario Collection. It comes and goes. I don’t like to judge games based on age. It feels weird.

It’s fantastic but not incredibly lengthy. I also really enjoyed Fire Emblem. That game had a neat story and fun characters.

That’s what games are all about-having fun. Sometimes it’s mastering a fighting game or shooter but other times it’a getting lost in a Zelda game. Either way, do what makes you happy.

off topic but if you have a 3ds you should check out a link between worlds if you enjoy top down zelda.
Funny you mention that.

I actually own a copy from a few years ago when I thought I was going to get a 3DS. So I never got around to playing it but you're right, that is right up my alley.

I want Links Awakening even more though since I like the story (I already read all the spoilers) and the graphics are even nicer than Link Between Worlds. Plus it looks like you can jump in this Links Awakening (?)

I'm almost the exact opposite. In my mid forties now and I more and more find myself preferring games with more serious tones. I still like the more innocent stuff, but it just doesn't hold my attention like it used to. Edit: Also, hardly ever touch my consoles or handhelds - almost exclusively game on PC now, except for the occasional exclusive.

No offense? None taken. Why would I be offended?

I agree with you on the pricing stuff. Another thing that irks me is their faux scarcity of their consoles.

It’s more or less a balanced diet for me. Though the last CoD I owned was CoD 2 way back when. Getting a Switch was a great decision for me as I’ve enjoyed gaming much, much more after that. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 rekindled my childhood love for JRPGs pretty much single-handedly. And I travelled a lot when I got the console so I was able to put in more gaming hours than before.

Then again I just got Game Pass for the next 2~ years, so I’m eager to find out what those games can offer me. Although I have been gaming for 30 years, it’s still fascinating to try new things and experience different approaches to gaming.

I think as we get older, those of us born in the early 80's have a huge love affair with the idea of the Switch. I grew up with Nintendo and PC gaming. Primarily PC and a game boy. I traveled a lot growing up with my family and the gameboy/Nintendo games really shaped a huge part of my idea of games and gaming on the go.

The Switch is such a neat device. The library is great and the fact that there is literally something there for anyone is quite something. Not counting Nintendo first party which I have purchased all the games minus Arms. Skyrim, WItcher 3, Alien Isolation, Doom, Disgaea and shit everything else is just insane for 3rd party support. The fact that I can take it everywhere and play those games is a huge plus for me.

A few weeks ago I was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon playing Disgaea 5 while drinking coffee with a huge shit eating grin early in the morning before I broke camp to hike out. What other system even gives that as an option?

Welcome to Switchland.

Switch is the first Nintendo device i was tempted to own since the Gamecube. But I refuse to pay Nintendo's ridiculous prices for underpowered junk. Also the fact that the games almost never go on sale, first party anyway, is a big turn-off for me. I almost never spend 50 bucks on a game, more like 10 to 20 95% of the time.

I'm going to buy one for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate next month.

I don't really subscribe to the idea that someone just outgrows playing M-rated games though. We might take a break for a while but eventually something new comes along that will grab our interest again. That said, I'm still going to play games like Deus Ex, The Elder Scrolls, GTA, Hitman etc on my PC but also looking at newer Switch games to consider purchasing. It's good to have options, a variety of different games to play.

More importantly, remember to also talk to a therapist about your anxiety and depression. Or maybe a close family member or friend. Meditation and exercise is also great for the body and mind and should go a long way to helping you feel better. Just getting lost in a bright, colorful video game for an hour or two isn't all you should do.

After reading the title I was going to come in here with a 'are you me' vibe but after reading the main post, can't say I fully agree, in that I still don't play Mario, Pikmin, Animal Crossing etc.
I do see the appeal of Zelda and loved BOTW, instant classic.

As a father, I'm finding the Switch my go-to gaming choice these days with my busy life. I too used to think Nintendo games are kiddie back in the ps2-3 days but while not enamored with'em, I grew to appreciate their calm, colorful and happy nature.
I'm rocking the Impossible Lair at the moment but this being said, I still oscillate towards 'mature' games.

Just got done with Mark of the Ninja and Bulletstorm as I haven't touched them before and last night I've downloaded Burnout Paradise which so far is a BLAST to play. Never got around to it on ps3 as I wasn't this big on racers before. Can't wait for NFSHP remaster in Nov. and maybe a Dark Souls 50% sale as I can't wait to jump back into those two, not to mention the supposed Ninja Gaiden Trilogy *dies*

I'm already on meds for it. And believe me I've tried almost everything at this point.

I suppose I agree with you. At first I thought this was going to be another rambling mess of a message, but it resonates with me quite a bit. It's why I had no interest in the One or the PS4, and have no interest in the upcoming consoles. Far too cinematic and dull. The Switch doesn't completely fill the niche I'm looking for, and its games are very expensive, but I always have classic consoles to fall back to.

I love my Switch because the library is insane

Having portable Crysis, Catherine, Deadly Premonition, Dark Souls, Donkey Kong TF all in one device is kinda amazing

Nintendo 1st party tho have taken a nosedive in quality imo.

I know this is a really hot take, but I hated Botw and Mario Odyssey controls great, but its too freaking easy (and too many moons).
Animal Crossing is fun for the first hours, but it's lacking LOTS of QOL features that would save the game from getting boring.

Maior 3d allstars and DK TF are the most fun that Ive had with Nintendo games this generation, and I'm sure that it will also be the case with Super Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3

To sum it up: great for 3rd party and indies, but Nintendo has lost its touch with 1st party (Smash is awesome tho, God bless Sakurai)

Never played these games, never felt interesting to begin with. But I have to admit, Zelda BotW was a huge waste of time as well. There are many more interesting games out there, especially for someone who has been playing video games for 30+ years.

Talos Principle
Catherine
Outer Wilds
Brigandine
Valkyria Chronicles 4

to name a few...

What if I told you I hadn't played a Mario game since the NES?

I can only imagine how much I'm missing out on Mario games.

For me, regarding being tired of Xbox/PS games, it’s more like Nintendo offers something completely different, and I can switch back and forth between the two.

Right now, I just had a glorious month with Super Mario Sunshine and Animal Crossing. But I’m now in the mood for something different, and am playing Man of Medan for an awesome Halloween horror vibe.

I’d like to see both of these sides learn from each other (Yeah, I know. Both sides. The laziest, feel good way to express an opinion. Hear me out). I’d like to see Nintendo continue down its path of getting more third party support, and more typical PS/Xbox games, and I’d like to see Sony and Microsoft, and all associated parties, focus a little more on gameplay and fun on those systems.

Yep this has happened to me recently.

I bought a Switch September last year as an impulse buy as I was due to go on a few long haul flights and wanted a portable gaming system to play on the flights.

Although I'm about to turn 35 I never actually played any Nintendo games growing up and had no real interest in their games. The first console that I owned was a PlayStation and I've been exclusively a PlayStation and Xbox gamer up until this point (and Dreamcast briefly lol).

Discovering Nintendo games has been an absolute joy and they give me a sense of happiness that I don't find in any other games. My girlfriend is a bit younger than me but she grew up with Nintendo games so was really happy when I started to show interest in Nintendo games. We now game together a lot and it's been really fun playing a lot of local multiplayer and co op games together (I bought her a Switch Lite recently as well).

I still do play the odd PlayStation and Xbox game. I have a PS5 pre ordered and will likely be picking up Demon's Souls at launch but the Switch definitely gets most of my play time and I pretty much only play Nintendo developed games at the moment.

And we still have Metroid Prime 4 coming up, and BotW 2 and Bayonetta 3. If those games deliver, the Switch is on course to serve up the greatest exclusive lineup since the SNES.

The opposite for me, when i was young i was all over nintendo games, now i don't give a fuck about them except metroid, and having a cheap tablet console with trash controllers doesn't help at all.
I hear you.

I was also like that too and grew out of Nintendo but now I'm going back.

Nevah! 39 years old and I can play an odd game like that. Recently Undermine and Hades for example. But I need my Bloodborne, Elden Ring, Resident Evil, etc. I like those much more.

It is interesting how you did that loop from growing out of Nintendo and then going back. I grew out and have no interest in a Switch. Maybe when I hit 50.

The biggest change for me is I used to love multiplayer shooters. Now I couldn't care less about them. Singleplayer is where it is at. Co-op in an action RPG or being invaded in a Souls game is all the multiplayer I really do now. I will probably make an exception for Halo Infinite since Halo 1-3 were my jam.

Games should be fun. The drive for realism moved focus from that principle for some companies, luckely it's still the principle for Nintendo most of the time.

Oy vey...

I get great fun from realistic or semi-realistic games, more than any silly looking game that nintendo can put out.

This narrative that only nintendo games are fun is the biggest bullshit ever sir.

Collecting coins and jumping platforms is not inherently more fun than any other videogame activities in other games, it's just a matter of taste.
Throwing people out of the stage in smash bros is not inherently more fun than any other classic beat em up.
Collecting pokemon is not inherently more fun than collection loot in a loot game.

Etc.

I turned 25 two days ago and I fucking hate that console. The interface, the games, the performance, the joycons and more.
It's so fucking anaemic and barebones it's insane. And most exclusives are not exactly great either.
Yoshi CW, the 2D mario, Pokemon, Luigi's Mansion, they bored me to death, sorry.

Some of us are just shit at those games, and do have the time to "git gud", same with Bloodborne

I just watch speed runs on YouTube
You'll never see a worse player than me. No idea of 'builds', havent got a clue what the hell the story is about half the time and i've played them all. I just shove points into health/strengh and hit things with bit swords

It works surprisingly well I must say.

Totally with you on this. I "main" PS4 Pro due to working from home in "these times" but before then and after again, Switch is my jam. For whatever reason there feels like there's less barrier to entry for thinking "I want to play" and then actually playing a game... and with full time job plus single parenting a 6 year old any friction I can remove from elsewhere in my life is appreciated!!

Quick resume actually working on PS4 is pretty excellent though! And is one of the features I'm looking forward to with Next gen.

Hory shit, Final Fantasy IX is getting a physical Switch edition in Asia.... With English included as one of the languages.

My love for Switch just literally grew overnight tonight.
