Everyone wants to hate the Xbox Series S, but.....

Not sure what your point is.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what yours was either.

Plus gamepass allows them to try out games without any risk or trips to the store. Not all parents are worried about a $60-$70 game... that's the habit of broke college kids or minors.

The games that drives the market and sell systems are not on gamepass and costs $60-$70, so your post is largely irrelevant.

Series S is a great upgrade over the Xbox One S. I'm actually far more interested in seeing how it runs games that run like shit on that system (which are, pretty much every game that has come out the past 3 years) than I am seeing how the Series X runs 10 year old Xbox 360 games. I am sure games like RDR2 and Jedi Fallen Order will look great on the Series S.

I hear what you’re saying, but, isn’t the whole point of what ms and gamepass is doing being available on a bunch of devices and doesn’t that give people access without needing an s? Can’t they have access to these games on their existing tablet or pc?
and Sony did make a more affordable console. $100 less than the disc version and maintained the same specs.
Well, no. People who have a PC capable of playing games probably won't buy this. But not everyone has a PC capable of playing games from gamepass. You also can't install gamepass games on an android tablet. Are you thinking of Xcloud? Because that's a whole other list of additional requirements. But it wouldn't make sense to buy a console to stream games if you already have a device capable of it.

The S seems nice on paper for the cheaper instant gratification, but after having it for a month I will feel baffled as to why I didn't just get an X in the first place.

It's not very good value next to the PS5 DE which is just $100 more expensive.

But the form factor is impressively compact.

Sorry, the monthly NPD charts says otherwise.
If you believe that Sony exclusives sell Playstation, I don't know why you wouldn't believe that MS's exclusives sell Xbox. And I am sure that if you look at Bethesda releases months, you're gonna see their games very well placed on NPD quite often.

I agree OP it isn’t horrible, I can see them even dropping the price a little more at some point. Right now it’s a wait and see type of thing. In 2 or 3 years we will know.

Pros
- It will make it easier for devs to port games to nintendo consoles, because they'll already have low-res, low-poly versions of games

This seems just a tad unfair
  • 3.6x faster CPU speed
    8 x 3.6GHz vs 4 x 2GHz
  • 3 TFLOPS higher floating-point performance
    4 TFLOPSvs1 TFLOPS
  • 480GB more internal storage
    512GBvs32GB
    • Internal storage is 24 times faster (100MB/second vs 2.4GB a second, double that with real time hardware compression)
  • 8GB at 225GB/S ram + 2GB system ram 4GB of 25GB/S ram (double the amount plus it's 9x as fast?)
  • Hardware GPU features are like 6 years newer
It's basically at least 5 times as powerful as a docked switch. Try harder next time.

There is tons of hate on the Series S box, but people have to say:
- its a poor value vs the series X
- its killing next gen, dragging it down with lower spec
- it will confuse consumers

So now, with that out of the way......

There is something odly compelling out the box.....

- really nice form factor (size)
- is still a fair amount cheaper, especially when sales taxes are taken into account in some places
- while not 4k, still has good backwards compatibility
- will play new games, even at a lower resolution - supports many new hardware features
- loads games much faster than previous gen

In my house, we will have 2 xbox series x machines, and a ps5. (Dont judge, this was paid for by selling ps4 pro and xbox one x machines we sold 2 months ago at top dollar that I bought on optimum points) So one tv left to get a box for, a 49" tv about 10ft away in the bedroom.
A series X, or the strangely compelling series S?

So where is the hole to insert OG, one or 360 discs?

Series S have really bad BC compatibility.

People should stop talking BC and S, because it doesnt really have it.

I mean, when they force you buy the game multiple times, it is not good BC.

I have tons of OG games in my collection, two broken consoles. So having no disc drive means no BC at all.

And whom even owns OG titles as digital, and they dont even support more than 4-5% of OG library.

With disc drive I could imagine to buy it for BC stuff from sale. Now it is just weak console without BC

Actually more. Docked switch is like 0.4 - 0.6 tflops territory, no where near 1Tf

Rebuy your games on sale digitally dirt cheap, thats what I have done over time. Or get game pass, it offers value of new games, plus a lot of older ones. Still a great bc console.

Yeah, some people are interested in both consoles and I didn't know PS5 had Game Pass and XGS games. Why bring it up? Most anyone in here already knows the price of the PS5 DE.

Well than save your money until you can buy a real Xbox. Series X
S should have never been made!

I wonder if MS sees a big chunk of the target market for the Series S being PS5 owners. Meaning, people who buy the PS5 as their main console, but still want to play some XSX exclusives, without investing in the main console. The XSS becomes a little brother to the PS5, and a trojan horse into MS's ecosystem for PS diehards.

“Maybe buying two $500 consoles is
going to be a difficult thing, so we said, ‘Hey, let’s make sure we’ve got something to catch a second-[console] owner.’” - Phil Spencer.

A $399 Digital only Series X instead would have been better all around.

The Series S size is cute though.

I have an X on preorder for my large 4K TV and will pick up an S for my small bedroom TV. Pretty easy and nice to have options.

I haven't purchased a disk in 9 years, I can play every single game I've purchased this gen. It will work perfectly fine as a backcompact machine

If the s had a disc drive it would be so much more appealing. I'm not the target audience for this console for many reasons

The CPU and I/O are nearly a perfect match to its bigger brother Series X and a generation above Xbox One X. With a GPU that only has to worry about rendering at 1440p, it's likely going to be just fine, it's not a console that will have to ever worry about running games at 4K and many gamers will be fine with that. If you don't own or even plan to be gaming on a 4K TV, Series S might make more sense.

How is this wishful thinking? That would mean anyone wants this shit to happen.

If you literally can't handle spending an extra 200 dollars then there's nothing sensible about how you live your life.
One of the most idiotic posts I've read around these parts lately...that's quite an achievement. Now your forum ID makes sense, only someone as braindead as a zombie could make a post like that.

Oh... it seems mr. rich here is very pissed with the existence of Series S. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Why don't you guys actually read the threads you're in before responding? I already said I think the thing shouldn't exist because of the possibility of the harm it does to next-gen gaming. Yes, fuck the system and fuck anyone defending it.

It won't hurt anything. Devs deal with this since forever... They had to deal with Xbox One, Xbox One X, Playstation 4 and Playstation 4 Pro differences alongside PC. Don't know why it will be SO MUCH harder to make games that work on Series S with lower resolutions and / or frame rate with, if necessary, some effects lowered or cut. But anyway, it exists, and you will have to deal with it.

This past gen is a perfect example of why it WILL hurt things. Games were absolutely hampered by those shitty Jaguar CPUs.

It's the only machine remotely worth the asking price. Buying a series x now is buying two years of average games that will not even closely utilize the full potential of these machines. If you are loaded, I guess it's whatever, but I value my money more than that.

Thanks to the tiny size, it is an excellent travel console to complement Switch.

I split my year between three countries - UK, Finland and Italy. While in UK I have my 85 inch TV and 7.1 setup, and will have a Series X. When I travel to Finland and Italy, I will hook up my Series S, allowing me to continue Cyberpunk 2077, Dark Souls and Cold War.

It’s the perfect second console.

I read this with a catchy TV shop tune playing in my head.

My problem is this. We'll already be hindered for 2 years or so because the games have to be compatible for PS4 and XB1X. Then after that you have to worry about the series S hindering the X. I don't think the latter will be too big of a problem, but it does caution me.

S is cheaper and underpowered vs X.

And so was Xbox One OG and PS4 vs mid gen refreshes. And the cheaper systems outsold the newer ones. For many people price is more important.

Go to an audio/video forum and people will brag about their high end systems, but what sells more? Some common guy model at Walmart or Best Buy. Good enough for many people.

Xbox series s wouldn’t seem so bad -although not something I would buy - were it not for the lack of a disc drive.

It’s powerful enough to at least get the games, but to hell with this all digital future.

You might as well get used to it, every year digital trends to more of the market, once it hits 80 or 90%, the next consoles will definately not have disk drives.

Lets be real. The series s is meant for people that are barely getting by. Its a cheaper console with an affordable option in gamepass. Thats the market. If your an xbox one or ps4 person i dont really think they made this with you in mind.

You're not the only one
No truly compelling launch titles. Especially from MS.
And I don't play as much as I used to

Series S will be a perfect Gamepass, EA Access, and Gameshare machine for me
It's minimalist design is speaking to me
My kids will enjoy it
And just like them, I don't give a damn about resolution and framerate
Funfactor most important

Or getting by pretty well, have a full schedule with work and family. And maybe play a game once in a while for an hour when finally finding the time to. Why buy something high-end when only using it for a very small fraction of your time.

Or maybe another scenario where you buy something for the kids but you don't want to have something too expensive for them to handle. Kids break stuff more frequently.

According to my friend who is a Nintendo fanboy who hates Sony, it is not XBOX Series S that will drag down next gen with weaker specs. Rather, the PS5 is the one who will be doing the dragging down.

Read this post. Name in RED is my friend.

Why are you so obsessed with your friend? Lol
