Yup, credit goes to Dubs from beyond3d forums as before

Past consoles by Sony always had their name on the chip, and this looks like it has been touched up in a graphics program to hide something. It's has a very strange dull grey look to it.

Most die shots showing the silicon, show much more reflectivity than what is being shown here. It tends to be much more shinier looking, and not this dull grey.

Is Sony hiding something?

Some have suggested, that the chip is a multi silicon layer chip, but I doubt it's that, due to cost reasons.

Teardowns after the release should clear up this mystery.

edit: on second thought, maybe the liquid metal would effect any writing on the chip, and also the reason why it looks how it does.

I was initially quite excited to play this game after its first reveal trailer but my excitement went down as I heard about glitches and poor reviews, and it eventually got thrown into my back catalog and quickly drowned out; does anyone think it is worth picking up on the PS5?
I love this game. One of my few platinums. Stopped in the middle of NG+ game to play on PS5. so glad saves transfer but want to play it again even without it. Love the setting and loved it from beginning but some people it really clicks for them a few hours in. My favorite game of last gen.

I do find Sony's BC announcements kind of funny.. they boil down to "Yes we checked and the game works in boost mode, also you can do something that should be a given, play your PS4 saves!"

But in the end all I really give 2 shits about are those sweet improved load times anyways..

edit: To be clear the above is not a complaint, just kind of funny from a marketing standpoint

Yeah but what i meant was you can't preload if you don't have it in possession. I thought he was taking about next gen
Yeah I get what you are saying; but I think his comment is just referring to the EA Play deal in general.

Would be funny if he wasn't though; Tom Warren really seems low-IQ so he might actually be trying to tell people to download to their XSX's currently sitting in warehouses lol

What I'm saying is there was a different way of getting more power with more CU's at a steady lower clock. A la series x. I just think it's not the best design to have a variable clock even if deterministic.
You should see this post.
Why does Cerny like running the GPU at a higher frequency?
Suppose Sony had gone with the same 56 CUs as MS with 4 disabled (52 CUs active) for PS5 and with the goal of 10.3 TF. They would have to set the frequency at 1544 MHz to achieve that. They would surely achieve their goal of 10.3 TF but the performance would be noticeably different between 36 CU at 2230 MHz vs 52 CU at 1544 MHz. Cerny even gave this e.g. but with 36 vs 48 CU.

At Hotchips MS revealed their "GPU Evolution" slide for Series X comparing its GPU all the way from the original Xbox One GPU.

sUET9U8.jpg

For the GPU evolution slide, they focus on 4 metrics here to show the evolution.
  1. Computational power
  2. Memory bandwidth
  3. Rasterization rate and
  4. Pixel fillrate.
Here's how a notional PS5's GPU perf with 52 CU @1544 MHz config would look like:
10.3 TFLOPS, 448 GB/sec, 6.18 Gtri/sec, 98.8 Gpix/sec

Here's what the actual PS5's GPU perf looks like with the current 36 CU @2230 config:
10.3 TFLOPS, 448 GB/sec, 8.92 Gtri/sec, 142.7 Gpix/sec

You reach your TF goal but look at rasterization and pixel fillrate. They take a massive hit. With 36 CUs those other units are now 44% higher than they were with 52 CUs. Not only does rasterization go up, but pixel fillrate also goes up along with the processing of the command buffer. And L2 and other caches now get 44% more bandwidth. Not to mention it would cost more money to go with a larger GPU. Please note I'm not downplaying MS here. Just pointing out the strategy that Sony has taken this time around. Whatever strategy MS followed for their machine works the best for them and I'm not downplaying that one bit.

Hope this post was able to better explain Cerny's variable frequency topic just a bit more and why they went with it. There is obviously more to talk about it and there's still not much detail and info like what's the power consumption like, etc.

Smart shift adjusting clocks when not needed and sending more power to cpu and gpu is all good and great but my question still stands - What happens when full clocks on cpu and gpu are needed? Surly demanding games will need full clocks on on both CPU and GPU. Surly you must see that games will need this, yet the ps5 and smart shift will not allow this for sustained lengths of time. Surly this is a detriment to the system.
I'm probably super late to this party, but there's a difference running at max clocks and running at max load. No?

Yes. It has an extra 2tflops and Full RDNA2 hidden there! No maybe 13tflops and RDNA3.

Battlefield is back on the menu boys!

I can't lie. GP seems appealing in a lot of ways, EA Access being one of them. If I get FIFA games for free on GP, then it's easily worth it, because the other games are bonus. However, the XSS is a certified piece of shit. Sorry, it just it, from a neutral enthusiast's perspective. Give me the XSX at a digital price, like the PS5DE, and we can talk. Then you might get me on board.

This might ultimately be the MS approach. XSS at the $300 pricepoint, until the XSX can drop there via economies of scale. How much are they planning to scale Azure servers for XCloud specifically? That's a difference maker right there. For now, I'm PS5DE-only. I need a digital console, and I want it to perform. Plus, I love Sony games.

Apparently they have increased the memory density since Zen2 could significantly improve the size of the cache in PS5.

Man, I want this to happen so bad, but I just can't believe it after the AMD reveal. Sony would have a nice ace up their sleeve, and they're just not playing it during the gap between unboxing and games. It makes sense to fill the void now, but they're intent on games making the big splash. So I just don't expect it.

You don't get this years FIFA with it for a while remember. I think for this year it wasn't added until May. If that works for you then yep its a great deal. Just don't expect the big hits on there day one, because they won't be.

I am still waiting for the dangerous screw thread concern on the stand to arrive, some toxic paint was coated on it and inhaling it will make you infertile or that he thread snaps due to being inferior steel sony imported from Uganda or something. It shatters and goes of in all directions like shrapnel blinding many users in the process "lollipop_disappointed:
:messenger_tears_of_joy: This is why I love you man. #1 poster on GAF. :messenger_heart:

I also don’t think Sony has Infinity Cache but I think Sony and AMD tinkered a lot with cache, as it would make up for the slower bandwidth on the PS5. It’ll be nice to compare performance between PS5, XSX and RDNA2.

Mark Cerny himself has answer this question but you refuse to believe him. Or even acknowledge his response.

EuroGamer: But what if developers aren't going to optimise specifically to PlayStation 5's power ceiling? I wondered whether there were 'worst case scenario' frequencies that developers could work around - an equivalent to the base clocks PC components have. "Developers don't need to optimise in any way; if necessary, the frequency will adjust to whatever actions the CPU and GPU are performing," Mark Cerny counters. "I think you're asking what happens if there is a piece of code intentionally written so that every transistor (or the maximum number of transistors possible) in the CPU and GPU flip on every cycle. That's a pretty abstract question, games aren't anywhere near that amount of power consumption. In fact, if such a piece of code were to run on existing consoles, the power consumption would be well out of the intended operating range and it's even possible that the console would go into thermal shutdown. PS5 would handle such an unrealistic piece of code more gracefully."

Even Xbox fanboy Tom Warren is amazed by the Dualsense controller.

quit trying to perpetuate that myth. that just shows who you are. He is not a Microsoft fan. He covers Microsoft because it makes him money. In fact, he doesn't own Microsoft equipment. Most of his tech is Apple including his laptop. He is a reporter who tries to grab scoops, even those that are critical of Microsoft. The reason he covers Microsoft is he has a lot of Microsoft insider friends, not because he is a Microsoft fan himself.
