Dirt 5: Digital Foundry Console Comparison - PlayStation 5 vs Xbox Series X/Series S + Performance - Every Game Mode Tested

Thats actually how I feel whenever I see these types of threads. Whole bunch of people arguing over which console performs better with regards to a game they more than likely will never play. I beat Miles Morales earlier in the week and Demon Souls last night tho lol

If you haven't figured it out yet im shitting on Dirt 5...how you got gaming in general from that is beyond me. So yes the argument still stands..anyone spending 30+ hours playing a Dirt game..thats a bad investment :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Ah, the sound of dismissing others opinions.

Watched the video. It’s quite something to be able to clearly make out that the back of the PS5 car looks better and more detailed than the Series X car in Image Quality mode, despite the hideous (and beginning to become infamous) YouTube compression of this game, as well as watching at 1080p.

Imagining that in 4K, that takes the difference beyond slight to me. I’d take that amount of extra detail, any day.

Ah, the sound of dismissing others opinions.

Which is what you've been trying to do with my opinion on Dirt 5 every time you reply to me. I expressed an opinion on Dirt 5, you jumped out and said I don't play games period :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The fact that Dirt 5 seems to be so important to some people is astonishing :messenger_tears_of_joy:

PS5 is getting VRR in a patch soon.

That’s great, but what I’m saying is people saying “aww but VRR makes the game run perfect” is not an answer, 99% of people will still have tearing issues.

I just hope that developers aren’t banking on VRR as a way to mask these issues, as VRR won’t be standard for a good while.

That is a big difference :messenger_grimmacing_

I am really disappointed in DF here. I have defended them for months, but there is simply no excuse for them downplaying this. First they started this nonsense tools excuse, and now its a bug. Like what? they have a very good repertoire with codemasters, why didnt they get confirmation before saying its a bug? they said they told codemasters about this, but surely it would be easy for codemasters to say hey its a bug, we will fix it.

the nonsense about downplaying the difference in image quality modes and the framerate in the resolution mode is also weird. When the PS4 had worse AF in every game, we just assumed the PS4 was bad at AF. So why are we not assuming the same about the xsx underperforming in virtually every game? Why not assume that the xsx is able to keep up in the 120 fps mode because of the downgraded graphics?

I cant help, but wonder if they have boxed themselves into a corner here by running ludicrous articles and videos downplaying the PS5 hardware and are trying to save face. If you have proof that its a bug, fine. Show us the proof, get us a quote from a dev. It really shouldnt be that hard. if a console version is doing poorly in other modes, recommend the other.

This shouldnt be that hard. It's their one job. to recommend one version over the other, and they end the video saying its a wash. Like come the fuck on. What if codemasters doesnt patch the 120 fps mode? what if the patch doesnt fix the image quality mode? Will they still recommend people go buy the xsx version?

This is the 3rd direct comparison they have done where xsx is doing poorly. surely, this is a precedent. they havent covered watch dogs or cod but we have seen the ps5 do better there in other comparisons. Their dev sources already told them that the PS5 was more capable and that was before launch. Maybe it's time to stop making excuses and call up Microsoft and ask them just wtf is going on.

They literally say that the better performance at 120fps might be because of the detail drop.:

tbh, Stuart should apologize to everyone in the next gen thread.

Maybe not you, as you seem somewhat level-headed, but they were all acting like retards (even some very fun, likable people), regardless of sides. There was always going to be a winner, for one side or the other, but that doesn’t justify either of their inane rambling and petty arguments for the year.

They spent over 2 mins damage controlling for Xbox. Tools and covid!

John: “I don’t think we can take anything away from these initial launch comparisons. That’s really important to note.”
Mmm sure. A pity when PS3 was the fault hardware in multiplat, I didn't seen they so involved in the early development narrative as today.

It's because of people like you, and so many others here, that have the gall to go bother them. They have to take care to not hurt your feelings, right?
But about the quote, you're wrong, I made my comment thinking about the past.
At that time (at least in some places) was discussed how the PS3 was not only harder to program, but also how it's development tools where behind those of Microsoft to the point of Sony needed to create the famous ICE team to create solutions and help developers. But the problem was that wasn't just easier to program for the X360 in general, it also had the aggravating detail that it's SO not only was offering less features for the player, it was doing that reserving a LOT more RAM.
Do you believe it? That the X360 OS used 32MB while the PS3 OS used 120MB?
With time new firmwares freed more RAM and the games improved because of this. I remember them getting to decrease the OS to 50MB at some point, don't remember if they managed to optimize more.

So, these things happen.
You people can't be serious believing that the Performance mode on SeX is anything but and error. It's shameful that it shipped this way but it's very clear that the game is using the wrong settings and we can't know yet how the SeX truly performs in this mode compared with the PS5.
Careful to not get too excited because there's the real possibility that updates coming soon will iron all these problems and make things work as intended and the tables will turn. If this happen what will you all say?

Not really maybe what they wanted was a larger TF number than the competition for marketing purposes. Most casuals are not going to be looking at Digital Foundry comparisons.
That TF number is JUST beacuse they wanted a chip to use in their xCloud as well.. It has almost NO extra use for their gaming console.
Remember: The only way TF is = to CU count is because the way AMD designed their architecture. If for instance each CU had a lower ALU count, the TF number would be lower. The TF number has NOTHING to do with rendering (except post-processing) But as long as you have enough of them to support your other hardware, any more makes no sense. (except if a dev secretly wants to compute Pi in the backgroud for no reason without anyone knowing) Yeah, it was a joke, but maybe it makes it clearer.

Agree 100%. I like how now that Xbox is behind in performance, “It’s not that big of an issue and if you have a VRR display you won’t notice the fame drops”. These shills are something else.

Not to mention NXGamer NXGamer wrote his own software and has no issues dealing with tearing.

Framerate mode on XSX seems to be running at XSS settings. Once that bug is fixed, the XSX is still the best console to play this game on if you have a VRR compatible TV. I love my LG ngl.
If this is true then how come its not running better on the xsx, this is clearly no bug, something more is going on here. There is no quick fix, xsx seems to very hard to code for. Its like the 360 and ps3 era. Best we can hope for is parity i think.

If that the case then the concern about PC, Xbox One, Xbox One X, Series S, Series X unified tools and cross-development is real.

Aka old hardware holding new hardware.
It could be a pain for devs.
I think the devs have been quite vocal about that for some time now:)

Edit: I really think it's more of a "hassle" for devs more than anything. Sure, maybe a few of your cool ideas wont make it into your multiplat game because of parity, but as I said I think it comes more from an annoyance standpoint.

How many Ls will Microsoft take. They have the worse exclusives, the worse controller, being the most powerful was all they had left.

They aren’t in a bad position (Series X is still great hardware), but they aren’t in a good one either, being beat by the competition in every possible metric, and failing every single expectation.

For the Xbox brand’s sake, I hope the power advantage is real, and makes itself known soon. Or at least, parity is achieved. Same for the games. They can’t go on like this — their only appeal right now is GamePass, BC, and brand loyalty from long-time fans like me, and I just don’t think most of that will sway most gamers.

Your short term memory fails you.

Conversation 1.
You: This game looks like shit.
Me: It looks good on PC.
You: Not from the videos I've seen
Me: Videos don't match what it looks like in person

If you think it looks like dog shit from the screens and videos you have watched that is fine.. I was trying to give you perspective from someone that has actually played the game at its highest fidelity settings. There was no dismissal of opinion there.

Conversation 2:
You: This game is a bad investment.
Me: Having fun for 30+ hours is a bad investment.
You: Yes. Playing Dirt 5 for 30+ hours is a bad investment.
Here you are objectively defining what fun can be. Hence dismissing ones opinion. Fascinating from someone who hasn't played the game, let alone see it in person.

The fact you are so adamant about shitting on this game is astonishing :messenger_tears_of_joy:

People damage controlling with the late tools defence, I send them this video from the horse's mouth refutation of that, and they either just ignore it or don't respond. It's remarkable how coping mechanisms shield the brain from thoughts it doesn't want to process :messenger_grinning_squinting:
So what you want us to believe is that the PS5 has some sort of secret sauce that makes it faster than the Series X?

If so, that's a fucking stretch, pal.

If faster hardware is running games worse than slower hardware, then what's the logical explanation to someone who isn't a rabid fanboy?

I hope a lot of you here praising and cheering the work of DF will continue to do so when these begin to go the other way In the future and not just cry shills of them when the narrative changes.

They are thankfully not the sole provider for such comparison. I would say that VGTech is better because he relies on numbers and provide a great comparison sheet. Also look how DF is trying their best to soften the damage , I cannot imaging their commentary if the role were reversed.

DF and others should stick to pure professional un-opinionated comparison akin to VGTech, I suggest that NXGamer NXGamer to follow similar style.

Returned my Series X back to Target last week because I felt I had been lied to. As more comparisons come in I feel vindicated in my decision. At some point folks are going to have to stop making excuses for Xbox.
may trade mine in quickly before the trade in price drops think it will be easy to buy xsx soon as everyone will want the ps5 for xmas

To be fair the differences are not big they are actually quite small. But I understand if you felt like Greenburg mislead you with his comments.

I agree that Microsoft needs to clarify a few things. If they only said "most powerful Xbox" there wouldn't be any issues.

Microsoft should discontinue Series S asap. Its just more hassle for developers. Let them focus on XSX.
Remember when people said it wouldn't harm game development? Months later Phil gave an interview where he acknowledged that it would cost time/money for devs
I wonder how is the ratio for XSX/XSS
Imagine having to make a game run on a console nobody bought.

Got damn, imagine being teleported from 3 weeks ago to today with these multiplatform results. And these are different game engines running very different game, racer, open world, shooter, with a similar result in PS5 taking the lead, yet everything negative on Xbox's side is "tools" but the minor sections where PS5 loses its "power of the 12tf." Lmao

What bug? This is what they've shown it to look like on Series X for awhile now. This is just what Xbox Series X is capable of, unfortunately despite the marketing it is the weaker machine

Sony have hit a home run
They mentioned that the Xbox Series versions were already patched multiple times previously during the preview period and those patches introduced new bugs. So the logical explanation is that the newer patches introduced other bugs.

This whole thing reeks of the XDK profiling issues.

Let´s see how long it takes for YT to convert it to 4K or for someone from Digital Foundry to release a statement, claiming YT botched the conversion and that they lost the 4K edit, no re uploads.

And DF still will not tell them that it is the fact that PS5 have all the advantages outside of the CUs because of the higher clock rate & the I/O subsystem.

Take your cape off guy, its just Dirt 5. Maybe if its free to play one day ill boot it up on the 3090 and come back and tell you what I think..maybe not :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Sure sure.

This is exactly what the Series X looked like in 120 FPS during previews. We all mocked the game looking like ass, we were assured it would be better in the final version by Xbox fans and that PS5 would look the same or worse. Here we are a month or two later and it looks no better on Series X but it looks way better on PS5

I think its safe to say under time constraints, PS5 will 'win' most of the comparisons this gen.

Newsflash. Most games are under time constraints. :)

You have to be an absolute dunce to believe that faster storage IO would produce better rendering. Just go ahead and say it. Just say it.

"Secret sauce"

You people sound like fools. And the infuriating thing is that six months from now, you will be no where to be found.

6 months?

Is that when Colts update is arriving?

Just saying I haven't heard anything from Microsoft about that. Just wondering where you got the 6 months from.

So in other words, "PS5 secret sauce"?

Both systems have secret sauce. An example of secret sauce in the XSX is SFS.

This is how game looks after SEVERAL patches (they even changed vsync behavior on XSX), if it was a bug it would be fixed in one of the first ones. Lots of assumptions on DF side...

I made a thread few days before theses consoles launch and I said 120fps is unnecessary, immature, etc.

People said it was because PS5 won’t do 120fps.

I stick with my opinion even with PS5 being the superior 120fps machine.

It is unnecessarily, immature, neither PC guys with high specs are pushing 120fps... devs should focus in 60fps on consoles... focus the best they can with 60fps.

Damn this one is staggering. So far it was always a slight performance advantage, or a slight resolution advantage, or a bit less tearing.

This is a big hit in visual quality all over the place. It's like one is running at medium-high and the other at very high settings. Even if we assume that the blocky lights are an oversight than nobody so far picked up on, the difference in resolution, draw distance, anisotropic filtering and alpha density is not something you can just "miss" when working on the game, unless this studio is composed entirely of legally blind people.

Codemasters must be adding something of their own incompetence for such a drastic difference, but at this point it's impossible to just say that there is nothing wrong with XSX at all. Be it the tools, the hardware, the fact developers have to ship the game on 5 different platforms using a single environment or whatever, Microsoft HAS a problem, and they MUST address it, or the optics will just get worse and worse over the weeks and months.

For the people bending over backwards to prove with wild assumptions and the quotes of bullshit peddlers on twitter that "it's just the tools, they have a new version almost ready, everything will be fine in a couple of weeks". Please, be more clever than that. If you don't complain towards Microsoft, Microsoft won't feel the need to take this seriously.

They won't make things better for you out of the kindness of their hearts. They can get away with exactly what you let them get away with, so be demanding of them. Unless you want this shitshow to go on for years to come, go to Microsoft and demand clarifications and fixes, stop working as their free PR army. You're literally punching yourselves in the nuts.
