Mandalorian Season 2 | DIsney+ | October 30th

I've not watched anything with Ashoka, but she was pretty great. Rosario Dawson nailed it in terms of being an interestingly character.

Really good episode, the Master she was looking for is obviously a set up for a future storyline (or spin off?). We have Bo Katan looking for Moff Gideon, Mando's quest and this.

Place your bets, do you think we will see
a recast Luke turn up?

The master is
Grand Admiral Thrawn, which means we may also see Ezra is either this or a rumored Ahsoka spinoff series.

I was actually looking around to see if anyone else had posted this, but I read a Kotaku review of the episode after I watched it, and the events they referred to in the article DID NOT HAPPEN in the article at all, in fact the characters referenced weren't even in it nor were the supposed revelations. It was pretty wild, I'm surprised this hasn't picked up yet - either they are revealing stuff from a future episode mistakenly, or the author didn't do his job and relied on fake leaks to publish. Now the article seems to have been scrubbed from existence. Did anyone else see this?

CHAPTER 13 THE JEDI

Another solid hour of Star Wars action with the live action debut of a beloved character and some interesting revelations about lingering plot points and some surprising new ones.

Fine episode overall, but I can't say it's my favorite of the season.

Rosario Dawson - Always a welcome presence whenever she appears. I have no fucking clue if she's playing the character of Ahsoka Tano right since I never watched Clone Wars (I really should one of these days) or Rebels, but I think Dawson does a fine job of playing a weary warrior with a lot of experience. And the makeup they did on her looks good. She really looks like the animated character come to life.

And while it's a definitely nice to see a Jedi like Ahsoka kick ass, I really hope they don't have many Force Users on this show. Keep it grounded with the blast heavy mercs like Mando and the rest of the bounty hunting scum of the galaxy.

The Child revealed - We now know his name, Grogu. And he turns out to be a youngling from the Jedi Temple on Coruscant who was hidden away when Ahsoka's former master Anakin Skywalker slaughtered the rest of the children. Ahsoka says that much of Grogu's memory from that time is dark, hinting that he may have suppressed some unpleasant memories. Most of us suspected that Grogu is much more than a child than he appears to be, so perhaps these hidden memories will play a part in his development as a character?

Beksar is the shit- So we have onscreen confirmation that Beskar can stop lightsabers. No wonder Manadalorians can go toe to toe with Jedi. The melee between Ahsoka and the Imperial lady using the Beskar spear was pretty cool.

The Grand Admiral - Holy shit. I thought all this time the 'Master' Ahsoka was hinting at was Gideon but it's actually Grand Admiral Thrawn?! The Admiral has been a favorite character of mine since the Heir to the Empire novel trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It's going to be a kick to see him in live action! Though I wonder how different his character is since this the new canon and I haven't watched his appearance on Rebels.

Very good episode that sets up a lot of stuff for the future. Hopefully it continues to deliver.

I actually have mixed feelings on this episode and am not sure it really delivered for me.

Ashoka
looked kind of dorky and all I could see was the
actress in cosplay

I also didn't think much of the
lightsaber choreography
and again thought it looked pretty shitty.

Oh and
Grogu?
sounds like a shitty Dragon Ball character or something.

A lot of it looked incredible though and I still think a lot of the shots in this season are arguably better than the ST (maybe it's just because I prefer the look of the older vehicles, troopers etc.)

I probably made the mistake of getting myself too hyped for it based on some of the comments I read here/online before watching it and it may be better on second viewing.

At the moment it's my least favourite episode this season although I'm still excited to see where the show goes next given some of the revelations in this episode.

I'm of the same opinion somewhat. I thought the episode was fine but people are making too much of a big deal of it. Probably because of Ahsoka's appearance and the revelations in it. It's not the best episode of the series or that of the season (that would be Chapter 9 The Marshal) but it's still a good 45 minutes of Star Wars on TV.

Also, one of my biggest peeves about the episode that I forgot to mention is Michael Biehn. Like wow, you got Johnny Ringo from Tombstone to play a bad guy but give him nothing to work with? What a waste of a cameo.

and they named the kid

Is it my imagination or did Gina Carano blow up since last season.
She was practically waddling when she had to run the last episode.

Y'all need to watch Clone Wars/SW Rebels. Watch all of Rebels, and the Ahsoka/Mandalore episodes of Clone Wars.

Ahsoka isn't technically a Jedi, so that's why I never expected her to train Grogu. But you have to watch those series to understand. Ahsoka is (I believe) the grey order. Her stealth nature fits in with this. It also helps better understand Anakin if you watch that show.

As for Dawnson's take on the character, I felt she did well but it was very hard to not see Rosario Dawson and just see Ahsoka. That's the drawback of using a well known actress. Ewan McGregor became Obi-wan, but Rosario didn't become Ahsoka. It may be her voice that's pulling me out of the fiction.

The search for Thrawn is a search for Ezra as well. It feels like The Mandalorian is going to run into Sabine Wren at some point. That's where all the sideplots intersect.

Decided to spoiler text this but I'm not sure it spoils anything if you haven't watched the other Filoni series. It's just context that's missing.

Lol that run killed me. When she went for the marauder or whatever it’s called. I appreciate her thickness but yeah, she looks double the size from last season’s

This was about the way I expected them to show force users and they're not overpowered in this context. Much of the show's focus has been on Beskar armor, and it really helps because it repels the lightsaber, and considering Mando is literally covered in the shit, it makes him a real problem for most any jedi. He would have definitely lost the Ashoka either way, but it wouldn't have been easy.

I also like that Ashoka isn't really a Jedi, she's more her own thing now.

Oh, and just so people know. The white lightsaber means the user has no affiliation with the Jedi or Sith. It means "the middle path." And you watched clone wars, you'll understand why this force user chose this path.

Damn, I didn’t recognize Hicks from Aliens until a few scenes in.

I didn't recognise him at all, and it was bugging the shit out of me as to who it was. It was only when the credits came up I was like 'Hot Damn'. Always feel that dude needed a better agent because he was great in the Terminator, Aliens and the Abyss, just never really broke out.

Anyway, I enjoyed the episode. I don't have a scooby about the cartoons so I guess that helps, but I liked the nods to Kurosawa and the light sabre action was decent enough for what is a TV show at the end of the day. Wasn't aware Beskar was that resistant. Is that a known thing, or did they just introduce it? I dare say that Beskar Spear will come in handy down the road if Mando has to face off against any Sith.

Not sure about the article, and we know who Ashoka is looking for because she names him. I was referring to when
Baby Yoda reaches out with the force later in the season, Luke could turn up

Apparently he was an alcoholic and a pain to deal with, so his career never took off. But cool to see him here.

My guess as to who the teacher will be:

There aren’t many Jedi left at this point.

Potential trainer’s could include a de-aged Luke Skywalker, aged Cal Kestis, or a mission to find Ezra Bridger. There are a few more but since these are even weirder aliens or unknowns like Quinlan Vos, they might not claw their way back on screen.

Bridger is the likely choice if they continue the “Princess is in another castle” type of storytelling.

Of course they could do a reveal of Kyle Katarn and shock everyone lol.

Yeah I referenced the wrong site. It's actually Polygon. Can't understand how/why the author got his description of the episode so wrong. Should be called out for it IMO, obviously he didn't watch it. Link below:

I don't know, not a fan of this episode..

First off, I never watched any Clone wars or Rebels.

Asohka looked super stiff, like she could not move her head or the tentacles fall off.
Which would be okay if she COULD HAVE MOVED SOMETHING IN HER FACE.

Damn, what a wooden piece of plank performance. Is Asohka in the animated series that boring and lifeless? I don't really see what people like about her if that's her.

That end fight on the bridge looked a bit like what some fat neckbeard nerd dreams wet at night. Some parts of that choreography were plain stupid though, and Asohka could have cut off imperial lady's fingers easily in that locked stance by just swooshing sideways a few inches without losing the lock.

The rest was okay.
I just really hope we don't get too much of a simple continuation of those two animated series.
I kind of want Mando to stay its own thing.

I guess that's where it's headed to now, though..

The whole show is like that. Mando looks like he barely move sometimes in that armor. Guess we just have to greatly suspend reality.

I didn't love the episode on first watch but maybe enjoyed it slightly more second time.
I still think Ashoka looked a bit shit (I like the character just not sure I'm 100% convinced by this version in live action) and I also don't love the name of The Child.

I think my main concern is that The Mandalorian is going to fully embrace too much of the weirdness from The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Sometimes I feel like those shows leaned a little too hard into the Fantasy/Wizard elements of Star Wars and I don't really want to see too much of that in this show.

Holy shit they totally nailed it. Dawson really captured the Ahsoka mannerisms quite well while adding a bit of that aged personality on top. I was dreading live-action Ahsoka but clearly from the first scenes no expense was spent on making sure the Jedi has all the action, lightsabers and acrobatics needed to deliver. The scale was not as big as some of the Ice Spder/Krayt Dragon action but chracter, plot and pacing-wise it was the best 40 minutes of the Mandalorian so far.

At this point I feel like season 2 just sets up storylines at this point for 2-3 Star Wars series to run in parallel as Disney pivots to streaming/TV show Star Wars. It's a sacrilege to throw such characters and actors for just a single-episode/arc appearance on The Mandalorian.

This is the way.

I was thinking this as well.
There are strong rumours that Boba is getting his own show, Obi-Wan is definitely getting one and I think Ashoka is rumoured as well.
I imagine there will be some crossover between them and that we are gonna get a Star Wars TV 'universe' that's almost MCU like in its approach.

...They are going to use the Netflix/CW model aren't they.

Awesome episode. I fuckin loved it. But just when you thought the plot was getting Mando somewhere, Ashoka changes her mind....

Is this really the last we’ll see if her in this show? Probably for a while, I think it’s pretty obvious they’re gonna go with Dark side Yoda when this whole universe of shows comes to an end. Game of thrones type twist. Not really sure if Disney has the balls to make the cute mascot turn dark though. How would that even work lol

Ok that rocked. In Dawson we trust. Loved the space western isolated town feel to it and the showdown with Mando. Bien didn't do the part much good but was passable. Great continuation of Mando's background to changing times and earning his bits as he goes.

my guess is by the end of the show Grogu will simply be reunited with his people, we will find out they are the Whills and are living in secret, and perhaps implied that Yoda was a bit of a renegade as their ethos is quiet non-interference. They will take responsibility for Grogu and we will not see him again until or unless there is a new story line that starts 100 years in the future, when Grogu will be a young man. So well past anything we have seen to date in any media. But on the journey there will have been major star wars lore unlocked and explored, and perhaps a spinoff series or two launched. Would not be surprised in season 3 if we see Din join up with Bo-Katan and we start seeing the actor they're paying take his helmet off fairly often... :)

Or Grogu goes and trains at Luke's Jedi Temple and gets killed by Ben Solo.

Also the planet this episode took place on looked exactly like the planet from the beginning of TROS, where Kylo is fuckin shit up. It could just be another planet that was destroyed by the same group though.

That’s gotta be the best Star Wars I’ve seen since... I don’t know, Rogue One maybe? Why the hell aren’t the guys behind the show running the entire franchise? That episode was better than the last three mainline films combined. Hot damn.

1: I had serious doubts about a live-action actor portraying an animated character. Rosario Dawson was absolutely great, and now we have this kind of awesome portrayal of one character from teen, to young adult, to adult, to old, wise Jedi (I guess Star Wars specializes at that).

2: Did we just get a Samurai fight, at the same time as an old West shootout? Bless this show. I won’t pretend I’m a super-fan of such things, but I love the influences they have on this.

3: I love and have strong emotional feelings for a puppet. Even the possibility of him having to leave Mando, and the bond they share, gets me.

4: The ways scenes breathe in this series, and have a ton of emotional resonance, without a lot of dialogue, is brilliant. Going back to those previously mentioned influences.

5: I thought the fights were a little weak, which seems to be a long-time flaw of the show. Maybe it’s adjusting back to realistic lightsaber fighting, after watching prequels, but I’m not 100% sure.

6: The direction is absolutely gorgeous. From the dust sweeping through the town as the hero steps up to a confrontation, to the quiet, beautifully framed moments between... Grogu, Mando, and Ahsoka.

7: I’m concerned about how much I’m starting to love this show. It’s so hard to trust again. At some point I stopped watching this because I was bored, and it was halfway decent, but because I genuinely really, really like it. That feels dangerous.

8: If darker skintones adapt that well to orange, is it possible that Donald John Trump is secretly a black man?

They did Biehn dirty he shoulda kicked way more ass.
Looked out of place too, which is weird given his filmography. Been awhile though.
