Why Some People Hate TLOU2?

Danjin44

The nicest person on this forum
I said this before, I don't hate TLOU2 but the story just didn't work for me. I mean both Tess and Bill in original game are far better characters than all the new characters in Part 2 combined.

The story in original game was much more focused, while in Part 2 they try do too many things but just didn't worked out so well in my opinion.

This user is a well-known fanboy, even since when he posted in brazilian forums.
Yes. I'm a fanboy.

No. I never posted in any Brazilians gaming related forums except ForumPCs where I were a content writer for GPU comparisons in 20xx (not console games related too)... the forum died before the PS3 generation I believe.

So before claim something... do it right and not bullshit.

PS. I posted on HTForum about air conditioner and Fire TV Stick... looking for help with issues in both.... I used to read HardMob but to find promotions to buy things I want (now it is better to sign up to a Whatsapp group).

My opinion is that the first game was GREAT, it just worked and the story, setting, etc was fantastic. It deserves to be remembered as a timeless classic and is a great game overall. It will go down in history as a highly respected game. No questions there. And to be honest, maybe they should have left it alone and NOT made a sequel.

The second game while having impressive visuals, effects, and mechanics was NOT SO GREAT as it felt "forced", it was obvious there was a forced sense of political nonsense, and that's going to turn off a lot of people regardless affiliation. Because it no longer was a game, but more of a political statement.

The story and characters were as predictable and one note as a low budget TBS drama, and I spent what seems like 70% of my play time mashing triangle along every wall, corner, and desk in the game. It was an overly long and gratingly boring experience.

It has badly written plot with badly written characters. It is also badly paced on top of that and drags out it’s ending which left me just .. eh shrug ..

Only watched it on youtube so i can only speak for the story, but here are some of the counter points:

  • The revenge cycle theme is fantastic.
It isn't. Not only its a fairly common theme, it isn't even that well executed here.

  • The story is deep and keep you engaged to know what it will happen next.
Engagement is subjective, but deep? Nah.
I feel like Druckman has 0 understanding on how violent people think and act, resulting in a rather superficial story that feels more like a B gore-porn movie and unintended comedy.

  • Characters are great with it own complications with amazing development (I can't find one to be bad).
Nah. As i said, 0 understanding on how people work and their development feels like something out of a soap opera.

  • The gameplay is again flawless... it is perfection.
  • The enemy variety is now way better.
  • The weapons and craft items are way better than original.
Can't say much about these points, but seeing it just felt like standard action/stealth formula with some satisfying gore.
It does seems better compared to the first one though.

  • The world and environment are fantastic.
True

  • Side activities are great.
Didn't see much of side activities apart from the open world segment though, but it did look good.

  • It humanizes all sides...
That should be the standard, not something to praise.
Also, while it tries, i don't think it does a good job at that.

  • ....it is impactful and emotionally driven.
nah

And assuming you disagree with my counter-points, just consider the answer the fact people can have different opinions on stuff

People have the right to their opinion but I do not get how this is considered a woke or political game. Gay people are part of life and having one be a major character in a game should be considered woke. I am not a fan of SJWs at all but when the mere presence of gay or trans characters is considered political I understand how some become radicalized.

I think whoever says this game is the second coming of jesus christ are the real trolls.
Like I said in other thread, the first tlou is one of my favourite games of all time. The sequel in terms of gameplay, graphics, tense moments, etc, is great, but the narrative is such a fucking disappointment.

I call bullshit. Ya’ll started creating this “Joel is iconic most loved and nostalgic” character idea since shit hit the fan with leaks
And then...
And he and Ellie have become quite iconic. But

Because it's all 4chan's fault!!

LOL. I don't know if it's even true, but people are saying 4Chan organized a pumping of Ghosts to take the crown due to Druckmann doing his usual endless Tweets.

For a guy who is co-president of a game company and recently promoted to VP at Sony, that guy sure loves to talk. Check out his Twitter. He tweets more than whomever at Naughty Dog runs their Twitter account. Who knows, he probably does those too.

This isn't the problem. After all, I'm a Nintendo fanboy (and Nintendo player only).

Your problem is that you do not listen different opinions and do not accept that people have different opinions and post in a condescending tone like everyone but you are wrong.

This makes you a dick, not your personal preference.
I never had issues with the word fanboy... it is a fine thing... not bad.

I just can't understand why do you created a lie to try to make a point?
Since 2005 I'm on GAF (I had an old account for years with a hotmail that got deleted because it was not a acceptable domain and I had to create another account with my professional email and that is since then)... I posted on VGC too... very very little on Resetera.

I mean I really don't remember any gaming Brazilian forum that I made part or have a user on it.

I made part of some romrack forum in 2000-2004 when I have time to translate RPG roms for SNES... did some works for the community... until I started to translate FFVII I believe and never finished (it was my first PS1 game try) due the fact I started to work at IBM in 2004 having no more time for rom translation.

TLOU 2 kinda reminds me of both Tenet and TLJ, both are great looking movies but the character writing is so cringe worthy. At least those movies are done in about 2 hours and not 25.

Why? It’s simple, you go from a post apocalypse world setting looking for a cure, your fighting these humans turned into monsters, which turns into a father/daughter story which is amazing. It really brings attention to how far a father would go to make sure his child is safe even if she really wasn’t. That message was amazing and also seeing were the story could go, like the second game having even bigger monsters and even crazier things. Shit even if joel died at the very end trying to save ellie again or something really heartbreaking.

Now we all know they put LGBT in the DLC which was fine, it gave backstory and and felt very good to round off the first game, it didn’t feel forced.

Now TLOUS2 was just forced SJW, LGBTQ sex shit, pretty much made the game about trans and women, they did away with men, they said fuck the father shit, the gameplay is almost non existent, it’s basically a movie. All that post apocalyptic shit wasn’t really that big of a deal, it was about sexual LGBTQ shit, it just killed what made TLOUS amazing. The game sold well, but pretty much fell off after a while. I haven’t heard anyone say that game was amazing, yeah it looks amazing, but the gameplay and story is shit, I don’t EVEN want a 3rd game. I think they might be better off with a new IP, but if they do make another game I’m sure the main character will probably be abby. Now I’m not here to hate LGBTQ, I don’t care what you identify as that’s your life, I do have a problem with trying to force somebody to like something when it’s just not great.

I'll list you

  • False advertising. Yeah, I put this the first because what the fuck. Imagine going to a movie expecting Leonardo Di Caprio but instead the actor is Charlie Day. Okay, bad example becuse that would be awesome but you get my point.
  • Bad writing. I lost count of the amount of times Ellie and Dina weren't killed only because of plot armor. Also Joel giving his bank account details and a blowjob to total strangers... Yeah, not very well done.

Except in this case the actor appears quite a bit. The trailer mislead about him being in a certain scene. But that's not a new thing for trailers.

Also not much point keeping your bank details secret when your brother just gave them out for you.

I think the misleading was not just the "close Ellie's mouth with hand" scene. IIRC the trailers shown Joel as an old dude in a lot of scenes that in the released game ended up being flashbacks, giving the impression that Joel was a part of the game. (At least to me)

And come on, that scene in the cabin is inexcusable. "Ha ha! You guys seem to know us!" and Joel's bro not seeing Abby grab the shotgun.

I don't hate the game, I liked a lot. I just ain't happy with the story and some other issues. I feel a bit disappointed because I expected something better from ND

The other aspects of the game (as you said, OP) are perfect for me (gameplay, soundtrack, acting, pacing)

It's like beating a dead horse, but here it goes:

- kills off the main character, like it's nothing, and like we have no emotional investment in him
- replaces the main character with the person who murders previous main character as if that's acceptable
- Joel must die for his sins, but Abby gets forgiven and let go, even though you spend the whole game hunting her down with the purpose of killing her
- it's superfluous that they kill him off, and it's equally superfluous that Abby gets a pass
- replaces main character with a woman, and woman that comes across as lacking in any femininity. Not that any femininity would have helped, but the fact, it's making her character appeal to a certain segment of political views out there.
- "lacking in any femininity " - an aspect that seems to be celebrated by many reviewers/bloggers, etc. as if finding a woman attractive is misogynic. The whole man wooing a woman, is seen as making the woman second place to the man.
- the ideology of Neil Druckmann (I added the second n Neil, so relax) which he has talked about in interviews
- Neil's condescending attitude to the fans who don't appreciate his story decisions or his ideology
- it's almost as if, how dare we care for Joel! Why? Is is too much of a man, or too white, or what? This follows the narrative that is going on in society these days, that gender and race have to be fixed, to undo the past, so instead of creating new characters, and new stories, they get rid of our current hero's. Case in point, killing off Peter Parker in the comic books.
- one of the strongest story elements in the first game, is the paternal feelings you have for Ellie, is that she replaced your daughter, and you have to help her, and it would have been nice if that continued. In this warped world, I would not be surprised that people have a problem with this also.
- the vast majority of stories are told from a serial point of view, in that the characters you have grown to like, is continued, and this game breaks that mold. Why? For all the wrong reasons.
- Woman are strong, and men are either evil, and useless (and usually both), like all the male characters in this game. It's like your basic script these days for a Netflix show. It's an agenda to correct what is perceived as a wrong, like income equality between men and woman. Have to have more stories of woman dominating over men.

This is overall a bad take.

People fail to put everything into perspective.

- Joel and Ellie didn't have this loving relationship at the end of The Last of Us Part I. People should have known going into Part II that Ellie would have some level of hatred towards Joel.

- Ellie let Abby go because she knows Joel was reasonable for killing her father and costing millions of people a chance for a cure - a cure she was willing to sacrifice herself for. In a way, she feels reasonable for her father dying and mentions when she finally confronts Abby.

- There was no place for Joel's story to go other than for Ellie and Joel to forgive each other, and that's exactly what happened.

- If the Last of Us Part II didn't go into Joel's story after his death, then you would have a point, but that didn't happen. We get to see what happened to Joel's and Ellie's relationship right after his death. The game makes us believe Ellie hated Joel until his death, until we find out that Ellie was able to forgive him shortly before his death.

- One of the strongest elements of the first game was in fact Joel and Ellie's relationship... but again, was their relationship strong at the end? The answer is no. It was Joel's decision to save Ellie and she didn't want that to happen.

- Having a less feminine character seems like a personal problem. From a gameplay respective, you're getting two different types of characters. 1 that replies on speed and quickness and the other on pure strength.

A lot of the rant goes in to politics. People are too invested in this stuff and come up with a lot of ridiculous theories.

What?

People are talking about this game now because it seems that some award show create some kind of controversy.

General talks about The Last of Us II died very quickly.

I mean, this isn't like Zelda or Mario Kart, games from 2017 that still have engagement. Or Animal Crossing, a game that trully reached all audiences.

Spoilers!

The game is fantastic, but:

- The whistle faction that uses bow and arrows is ridiculous and hurts a lot of the story. They belong in something corny like The Walking Dead, not The Last of Us.
- Ellie is developed like a serial killer but they don't have the guts to fulfill her arch as a bad guy and end up redeeming her at the end so they can make the third game. It makes the whole story a bit odd.
- Ellie being too young, at times the weapon she holds is as big as she is and they never explained why she went from young teenage Ellie to apparently Rambo teenage Ellie. Abby is a lot better in this regard, she is a soldier and it makes sense.
- Abby suddenly starting to kill her battle-brothers doesn't come together well.
- The dodge mechanic removes a lot of the tension.
- It's more over-the-top and silly than it's more grounded first entry, some scenes (horse riding through warzone) are comical and don't fit the tone of the game.
- Some of the strangest pacing of any triple-A game in recent memory, it stops and starts a lot, it's overly ambitous with flashbacks and exposition.
- Ending Ellie's part halfway and switching over to Abby makes you anxious for what happened in the theater and it is frustrating to wait for so long to see what happens.
- The soundtrack is not good. The first was amazing, but they hired Gustavo again and he has not come up with any good new sounds and it sounds like a giant rehash of the first game rather than something original.
- The game sticks in certain locations for too long, especially the Ellie part.

I didn't like Lev's story at first but I came around to it.

Many people see it as just a trans story when it was possible that Lev was going to be made a wife at a very young and wanted to escape. Yeah, Lev wanted to become a trans, but you still have the arranged married issue.

I am indifferent to it. I played the first game and thought it was overall a good gaming experience. But there was nothing in it that made me want more. I ignored the DLC, and none of the marketing interested me at all. After the game came out I read the plot points and felt like I really didn't miss anything. The controversy was overblown. I prefer the Uncharted type of game from ND. A real high flying adventure as opposed to the dark future apocalypse with brutal violence mixed in. Also an overly brutal and violent or gruesome game doesn't interest me.

People have the right to their opinion but I do not get how this is considered a woke or political game. Gay people are part of life and having one be a major character in a game should be considered woke. I am not a fan of SJWs at all but when the mere presence of gay or trans characters is considered political I understand how some become radicalized.

I'm in my 30s, have lived in a county of around 400k my whole life, and have never seen, met, or even had 10th hand knowledge of a tran individual. I only personally know 2 openly gay people. It shouldn't be surprising that people with similar life experience might consider such characters forced pandering to serve a political agenda. What may seem normal or commonplace in New York or San Francisco doesn't necessarily translate to the rest of the country or world. You are talking about like 0.3% and 3% of the population for tran and openly gay respectively. In modern media as a whole they probably represent 5 and 20% of characters respectively, and like 80% in TLoU2. Still think it's not political?

I think a big reason of why Ellie spare Abby's life cause what she really felt was guilt for not forgiven Joel earlier.

Was not a rant and tell that to Neil. Him and many others at Naughty Dog are the one's being political.

Amy Hennig was forced out for a reason, and it was political.
Going by the story, they were not trying to paint Joel as some evil white male.

He was trying to hide the truth from Ellie, but he finally admitted why he saved her. Joel at the end (through flashback scenes) tried to show that he still cared for Ellie. They wanted us to believe Ellie had too much of a strong hatred for Joel and she was to late to forgive him before he tied.

It wasn't until the end that we find out that they did forgive each other and Joel would do it all over again because he cared about Ellie.

The placements of the flashbacks and how they played out doesn't show an anti-male attitude. It shows that they care about the character.
