Next-Gen PS5 & XSX |OT| Console tEch threaD

Its just crazy that these companies can get away with releasing broken games and charging people $50+ for it.

wow. how do you even do worse than the xbox one? THE most hated console of all time at the time of release?

Despite launching a more expensive console, Don at least made sure he shipped enough units. How bad can you be that you cant even ship 1 million units at launch?

We have been in a global pandemic remember?

Sony was criticized this gen for showing games too far from release, like we indeed saw with the 2015 trifecta(FF7R, TLG, Shenmue 3), but where are those critics now that MS is showing a bunch of cgs without any date?

“We are investing in new things, we signed things just recently that I thought, ‘Hey, from a PR standpoint it would be really easy for me to put a trailer on screen’, but then I know the game is not coming for another two and half or three years, so I didn’t want to do that.”

It's that damn Jaguar CPU... One thing is for sure.... Sony and Microsoft got it all wrong with thier CPU choice.

How much more would you all have paid for a PS4/Xbox One if a beefier CPU was under the hood. 🤔

It's redundant because Jaguar was their only option. Steamroller cores weren't ready and Bulldozer wasn't worth the silicon it was printed on. ARM simply didn't have any high end CPU design for non-mobile platform. Intel would have roasted them contractually with an inability to shop around to different fabs to get the best deal on lithographical process.

Both MS and Sony chose the best product they could get for the choices available to them at the time.

Had AMD poached Jim Keller earlier and Zen been available back then, it would have been a different story.

If you read the thread/comments - additional details:

and..

I think this is more about fully understanding the entire context of the sales numbers reported...

This.

Also, don't forget that MS pushed all their global stock on a few targeted countries last time, with the "Tier 1" and "Tier 2" countries. This is their first time attempting a simultaneous global launch, afiak. So with the XB1 they would have had more stock available to shift in the US. While on the other hand, they're selling into more countries day one, so it's no surprise this is a bigger launch globally than the XB1.

Nah, I'd rather go the easy way of:

Why did they put a controller in the box when the console has no games?

But that's just like kicking a guy in the nuts when they are already down.

I really do wish MS had more than just Halo slotted for the launch window. You know, something to push other systems/developers along into this new generation.

This is from 2017. Plans change. Remember when Jim flat out said he believed in generations? That plan changed quicker.

No it didn't troll. Look at what Jimbo Sony actually said. Plan hasn't changed.

I totally get the backlash over the PS4/5 cross gen games, but its not like every game is cross gen.

Demon's Souls, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, GT7, Returnal, Destruction Allstars, Astro's Playroom. Plenty of PS5 exclusives already. The DualSense is a next gen controller. The UI is brand new. The hardware is a massive leap.

I just realised something, isn't launching Halo for fall 2021 a mistake in terms of competition. You have COD and Battlefield releasing then. I think if Microsoft were smart they would release Halo in August-September. If they can't make that date they are better off delaying till March 2022.

I don't think another delay would be good now, and i would think halo has a large enough set of dedicated fans that it should be ok with pushing game sales no matter what, I mean it is one of the most famous games of all time, it has to be a given that is will sell well surely.

Plus maybe its game pass they are really thinking about, i don't think battlefield will be on gamepass straight away will it?,

November 2021 is the 20th anniversary of Halo. Thats its release date most likely.

Also Call of Duty 2019 was an October launch, and this years CoD seemed a bit behind schedule. I bet next CoD is Oct 2021 launch. And I kinda doubt Battlefield 6 is coming out in 2021.

I don't think Microsoft want just hardcore Halo fans to buy this. This game needs to be the big event release. But I feel like Call of Duty and Battlefield release close to Halo will lessen the impact of Halo. Imagine Battlefield with crazy graphics even better than Halo and it's next gen only where as Halo is cross gen and doesn't look as good. It would get drowned with all the other releases. Sony have the right idea where they either release a game that doesn't compete (same genre) as multiplatform games around the same release. Or they just go for release dates like Q1, Q2, Q3.

As i said, i think it's a game pass seller. I think they need it, they cant keep hiding there games, they need to have a faith of confidence in their work.

They have had long enough to fuck about, setting dates and failing to deliver then doing that all over again will probably do even more damage to the game.

Did having the best launch line up plan change too?

Just another PS5 naked video. You gotta be kidding me. That's what they came up with?

They have tons of chip die shots on their page, I would expect them to upload the PS5 one as well, don’t know when though.

Loved Perfect Dark on the N64, hopefully they don't fuck it up.
The show was kinda meh, but few games to keep an eye on (PD, Evil Dead and I think there was another but I forgot what it was).

- The Series X|S debuted lower than XB1
What? How?

excuse: they launched in more regions this time

PS5 more than held up to that. Generations is more than just games. People keep focusing on one aspect and saying Jim Ryan lied.

There’s a reason everyone says PS5 feels more next generation than SX

So the Games Awards was quite disappointing.

It mainly feel like there was :

4 players coop modern zombie shooter game
4 players coop future zombie/aliens shooter game
4 players coop fantasy middle ages shooter/brawler game
Western zombie/demon shooter game
Dinosaur coop Jurassic Diesel game
Nice Crimson Desert trailer which looks like an upgraded Black Desert Online coop game
...
+ CCG teasers of games supposedly coming late 2021 but we'll still got trailers in 2022+
Naughty Dogs devs running out of things to say after the first half dozen awards
No man sky dev surprised he got the award because "it's usually Fortnite"
All the staff of Among Us on stage (all four of them) bewildered by what's happening to them
Where is Silent Ring of Elden Forbidden War ? :messenger_weary:

I agree in general, but even more so because when you start at the beginning with something - high-end gaming APUs in that scenario - you are forced to start at the beginning and go through all the phases before you can reach your preferred destination, and at that time - as you say - there was no other options on the APU side because the Jaguar was as Brawny a multi-core CPU that could realistically be integrated into a console APU at that time in technology, and the PS4 Liverpool APU was leagues ahead of AMD and Intel APUs in the PC space.

I would partly dispute that both Microsoft and Sony chose the best product they could - on a technical level - because Sony did have access to next-gen Cell processor chips that IBM had prototyped with 16 and 32 Cells IIRC, and a Cell solution like those with a 2D accelerator GPU would have been of similar paper spec performance as a PS4 - but multiples faster with ICE team code solution - and would have had a unified memory solution too, but would have had many Brawny PowerPC cores for game logic running at twice the clockspeed of Jaguar cores....but with the 360's market share success coming at the expense of negative perception of the PS3/Cell, which also killed developer appetite to stick with a Cell solution on a PS4, we did realistically get the only viable options from both IMO.

How has that changed?

He never said every game would be PS5 exclusive. And every game isn't cross gen. Nothing's changed.

Sony has done what they've always done. Some exclusive, some cross gen.
