Any game that forces the player to do a narrow task and then rewards the player with a cutscene.

Those games are waaaaaay worse for the industry than loot boxes.

Overrated = “Top Games Of The Gen You Hate”

You can tell 90% of the responses here are that interpretation 🤣
Well, i mean.. yeah?

Overrated means they are highly rated.. so obviously the Thread is going to be about games we think are rated too high.

brenobnfm brenobnfm can't quote you directly because your post is empty.
You're crazy, Uncharted 4 and RDR 2 shits on GoW writing and narrative from great heights, the comparison is insulting.
RDR2? Are you for real? A game with Sadie Adler in a discussion about not decent, not good, but great narratives?
Uncharted 4.. well, maybe, but again, narrative was the biggest focus of the game and ultimately what ruined the experience for me given how much of a priority was given to it over actual fun. Didn't happened at all with GoW, which was a much more cohesive and competent experience.

I don't give a fuck about combo videos, i don't play these games to masturbate the controller against mob scrub, the bosses were trash filled with QTE and the enemy variety is abysmal.
Well it's a fucking action, you're supposed to masturbate with the controller. But even if you didn't, the game combat is still ace in making you feel like the ultimate badass, a real God of War, even by just walking and dodging. Do i have to post gifs?

And, enemy variety is abysmal? With regular enemies as Draugr (with variety Heavy Draugr, Shielded Draugr, Dual-Wielding Draugr, Draugr-Projectiles, Draugr-Speed, Draugr-Explosives, Draugr-Power Weapon), Revenant (and variety Revenant-Poison, Revenant-Summoner), Brood, Legion, Nightmare (variety Ice-Nightmare, Exploding Nightmare, Fire Nightmare, Nightmare Parasites, Gloom Nightmare), Reaver, Shadow, Tatzelwurm (variety Cursed Tatzelwurm), Traveler, (Traveler Champion), Viken, Wolves (Rabid Wolves, Poison Wolves), Wulver, Fierce Wulver, Dark Elves, (Dark Elf: Warrior, Dark Elf: Summoner, Dark Elf- Lord), Hel-Walker, Hel-Reaver, Hel Reaver Lord, Hel-Shadow, Hel-Shadow Scouts, Hel-Viken, Hel-Traveler, Hel-Brood, Hel-Revenant and every single variant meaning differences in gameplay and not just cosmetic.. wtf kind of damn games are you playing to call GoW abysmal on this matter?

It's not bad because it's metroidvania, it's bad because it makes no sense, the puzzles are nonsensical without purpose in the world, lots of convenient passages for Atreus, chests everywhere that no one opens god knows why and a lot of other bullshit, it heavily conflicts with the serious tone with the game
What the hell.. it's a video game, you should be fucking thankful it doesn't forget being one.

it's gamey as fuck.
GOOD!

I think the LAST OF US series turned out to be over rated. First game was a good story, repetitive gameplay.

For me, it has got to be Metal Gear Solid 5. The gameplay/graphics itself was good, but the content was very repetitive/boring and the story was disappointing as well.

I'm seeing TW3 mentioned a lot which is just plain unfair. You guys don't get it at all. It's an an RPG. That means it's allowed to be harebrained and tedious and shitty as long as the cutscenes provide an opportunity to declare that videogames have come a long way. Just because the controls, systems design, and fundamental gameplay are on the level of Chinese shovelware doesn't mean that the game is bad. Did you play the Bloody Baron sidequest? Blew me away. You can't believe what's going on with this dude. Very mature, adult themes. Videogames have come a long way.

Listing what i think should have way lower scores on Metacritic/Opencritic. Doesn't matter if i actually love some of these games.

Metal Gear Solid 5 (because it's incomplete and often a mess)

Uncharted 4 (because the pacing, while perfect for a movie, is absolutely awful for a videogame)

The Witcher 3 (because many elements sucked and the game at launch was a disaster, still in my Top 10 ever)

Resident Evil 7 (because enemy variety is non-existent and the third act is a low budget piece of shit)

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (because it's one of the jankiest pieces of shit i've ever played)

Resident Evil 2: Remake (because it sitting at 91 would totally justify TLOUII getting 10/10 left and right, still love the game to death)

Red Dead Redemption 2 (because with the exception of horse riding, everything concerning the "game" part of the game is insulting)

The Last of Us Part II (because it's a narrative heavy game with a trainwreck of a narrative)

Out of those i've played. I've yet to buy Cyberpunk but i'm fairly certain it would be on the list as well.

Deux Ex Mandkind Divided is a pretty underrated game imho. I have re-installed it after years of not playing, I did it specially after the Cyberpunk 2077 fiasco: and while the gunplay is definitely not as refined or as satisfying as the one you get in Cyberpunk 2077( I can't take seriously anyone who says the CP2077 gunplay is bad; imho it is among the best offered in first-person RPG genre), the gameplay feeling of Deux Ex MD has a tactician approach that fits entirely with what the game actually is, a stealth tactician game that gives you enough liberty to take multiple approaches. Yes, shooting with weapons feels a bit floated, but it works well enough, and the options and progression the game offers are decently thought out and balanced.

The Witcher 3 gameplay is indeed clunky, floated, and the progression system is underwhelming overall, but everything else about the game, story, characters, side missions, world building, music, immersion, etc, ooze greatness and Game of The Generation.

My most overrated game of this generation, and including most overrated game of all time for me, Zelda Breath of the Wild.

I've played every single Zelda game released, I bought BOTW at launch along the Nintendo Switch due to the hype........ And what a dissapointment. The focus on physics was a decent approach as well as the franchise moving into the open world territory, with the world regions being varied; but the overall execution was piss poor. "MSG5 level" of empty world, few and underwhelming easy-piss temples, awful and easiest bosses in the franchise, lack of enemies variety, game lost all the sense of progression pretty much known in the franchise for just a "Skyrim loot progression" (You basically unlock all the abilities withn the first 30 minutes of the game, and you remain with them till the end), and let's never forget the annoying weapon degradation mechanic.

TLOU2 and Hades. Both are well-made but in no way GOTY, let alone "best game of the generation", are those guys nuts?! :D

Some people really need to understand that their identity doesn't equal "which hole you want to fuck".

Is OP in some kind of alternate reality where a new Playstation and Xbox didn't launch last month?

Last generation? Easily RDR 2 and TLoU 2. Shitty, constantly stuck-in-molasses garbage controls and a generic revenge plot with boring characters and ending.

Resident Evil 7, is the Capcom response to PT, the story not connected previous entries, and the main antagonist is weak. The game sold a lot of copies due to its name

Red Dead Redemption 2. Atrocious gameplay mechanics. Like forcing you to run a maraton in a wheelchair.

The Last Guardian.... Even when I was a lurker, folks in here wouldn't shut up about it since it's showcase on the PS3 and when it launched, it was quickly forgotten.

God of War. Kratos in Viking world is so forced, cheesy and stupid. Slap a fucking beard on him and give him a shitty little kid and suddenly he's "mature." I hate character reboots. Write a new character instead of whitewashing their low quality away. Combat is so fucking stiff but serviceable. It's so far from some world changing industry gold standard as I've seen some say. Ghost of Tsushima's combat is leagues better.

The Last of Us 2. Admittedly, I haven't played it (feel free to call me an asshole) because I hated TLOU (bar the final gameplay sequence) but what I watched via let's plays seems like more of the same. Basic ass stealth, way too many cutscenes, pretentious writing, and Druckmann apparently hates black people.

Fortnite - What a stupid game made for stupid people, made famous by stupid streamers and created by a stupid company selling gambling mechanics to kids.

Truthfully, I don't have an opinion about Fortnite because mp games aren't my wheelhouse. But, Epic is a hypocritical predatory company headed up by an absurdly brilliant and talented man, who also happens to be a complete cunt, and deserves a mention.

While I detest calling something overrated just because it didn’t appeal to me as much as the general mass, I’d have to go with Witcher 3 on this one. I don’t even know why, because I love the world and general lore of the universe. Probably the gameplay.

I really hate the term overrated. Ratings are subjective, hence they cant be overrated. Your own personal rating just differs significantly from the average rating, which is fine. Doesnt make anything bad, its just not your personal thing.

The reason I dont like the term, is because its a rather aggressive use, implying that a lot of people are wrong, or biased (because they were bought or something), or "have no taste". And this aggressive undertone often leads to non productive discussion were people just drive by shitpost on games they dont like. But thats not even what overrated means.

I'm not saying games cant be overrated, but much more often its just a matter of personal taste. Some people dont mind the story and characters in TLoUII and many more casual players have no problem with the oldschool mission design of a RDR II.

Funnily enough, if the thread is about underrated games, the general vibe and tone of the thread is always much more positive in general.

Edit:

Zelda Breath of The Wild. Thats shit is absolutely terrible, outdated, and ugly.

Followed by bloodborne for the same reasons.

This is what I mean by drive-by shitposting without any discussion to be had. The poster doesnt like them, which is fine. But seeing how the games were being rated during the game of the generation voting on this very forum, many people would strongly disagree. The phrasing of this topic simply doesnt allow for meaningful discussion about why certain aspects arent good or why it might appeal to only certain people.

GOOD!

As i said, it's a game for the average gamer who probably doesn't care about nuanced writing, because GoW has zero nuance, that petulant Atreus arc is amateur hour in the writing department, laughable stuff. Also do not question the worldbuilding in the game, because it's a "game" and it doesn't matter if the gameplay loop from PS2 era and nonsensical gamey level design heavily conflicts with the Naughty Dog wannabe grounded narrative. "you should be thankful" lmao gtfoh

And no i'm not supposed to masturbate the controller, a good action game needs to incorporate a lot of things, the combat mechanics are important but so is the enemy and encounter design and the enemy variety is abysmal indeed, most of your list are variants of the same shit, most minibosses were trolls of different colors and the only good boss fights were the Valkyries who were relegated to post-game content without a minimally elaborated quest around them, Baldur is QTE trash, the Dragon and whatever else are not even worth mentioning.

Mario Odyssey. After I completed the game with almost all moons I said and so?

It's not even the best Mario 3D game. A good platform game... And stop.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - Not a bad game, it's a technical marvel not least. But it's not that fun to play.

The Last of Us Part II - It's 7/10, very impressive in many ways but a mess narratively.

Celeste - I just don't get what the fuss is about

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - As a non-Zelda fan I kinda liked it. It felt different than previous Zelda games I've played. But it's nowhere near 10/10.

If you say a game is overrated and have not played it, then it is one of the few instances where an opinion is objectively wrong.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, without question.
  • The world is utterly lifeless. Easily one of the least interesting open worlds this gen.
  • While the physics and sandbox-ness of the game is used heavily in the shrines, it's not used anywhere else at all.
  • The voice acting and overall presentation feel like a game from 2005, if not older.
  • Weapon durability was a mistake. You're forced to carry around a bunch of weapons just in case what you're using decides to break
  • There's basically no story
  • Needing to wear certain armors in certain areas was just dumb. It hindered exploration and forced me to check a guide just to find out how to get access to a new area
I can't believe this game released the same year as Horizon Zero Dawn, which shits all over it in every possible way.

Breath of the Wild.

I wouldn’t really call it overrated as I get why so many love it. I’m just not that big on exploring open worlds, messing around in sandboxes or with physics etc and loved Zelda for the dungeons so it just didn’t wow me.

I don't play many games, but I played Mario odyssey and stopped after about 2 levels. Just bored me to death. I liked BOTW but finished it super low % and never touched it again.

It REALLY surprises me when people don't click with Breath of the Wild. It legit shocked me how much better than everything it was in 2017. Was it because it felt a little slower to you? I'm genuinely curious because when I was playing it I just assumed everyone was mirroring my experience.

I'm a huge Zelda fan. It is not a bad game, but it is a bad Zelda. I'm not telling they shouldn't have risked to change the formula. The franchise urgently needed a change of air, and I still think going the open world route was the right call; but, what we got was an empty world with lame dungeons, lack of ability progression, lack of challenge in those dungeons and their bosses, lack of enemy variety, underwhelming story, forgettable side missions, and annoying weapon mechanics.

Game is far from being the masterpiece people claim it is. I remember falling into fanboysism and getting pissed off by the Gamespot review, and after finishing the game by myself, I told to myself "they were right, and they fucking nailed it".

Loads of them. Heres my top 4.

RDR2 ->
Great story, great direction, amazing soundtrack, but the most atrocious game design i've seen in a game. Previous rockstar games were already in the bottom in that sense, and they somehow figured out how to make it worse. Its so horrendously bad that it made me drop a potential 10/10 review all the way down to 7.

GOW ->
Game feels really bland. Uninteresting story, underwhelming combat (even more so considering its origins), weak characters.... all it has going for it is some cool direction and visuals, and i guess somewhat cool puzzles.

The Witcher 3 ->
Bad game design (although not nearly as bad as RDR2), story has its great moments but it just feels weak overall. The most it has going for it are cool visuals and soundtrack, and maybe its open world?

TLoU2 ->
Don't know if its correct to call this one overrated considering so many people already call the story on its bullshits, but considering game journos put it on such a high pedestal i'll add it anyway.

GOW PS4 has the best combat in the franchise period. Seriously, GOW is the only recent action adventure game that tried to do something different than being "another souls-like combat", and this while being quite satisfying, brutal and responsive.

Also, I just saw someone else comment here that GOW combat is a souls-like wannabe, WTF? you are all seeing Dark Souls everywhere at this point. GOW has almost NOTHING of Souls-like combat (maybe lending to the brutality?) seriously; it is a different take.

Welcome to the ignore list.

For me the most overrated is Last of Us 2, yet another 3rd person cinematic shooter that Sony loves to make (last of us, uncharted, days gone). Retarded story choices, no real improvements from the last game and agenda pushing af. What should I be so impressed about here? cause it looks pretty ? wew

Probably anything by Nintendo. Nintendo fans can't shut up.

So probably Zelda.
Nintendo was so consistently good for a huge chunk of my life, but the last major group of games I loved from them were the early 3DS titles. Mario 3D land is so fukin good, too bad world isn't quite as fun for me. (Still ok)

The Wii u was okay, but I could have lived without it, it has a useful homebrew niche I enjoy so it's plugged in atm.

the switch is a massive disappointment, I regret buying it, the one game I like, Mario maker 2 requires a subscription for alot of features. Mario odyssey was so shit, honestly the absolute worst 1st party game I've played on the platform, (botw still really meh) for every moment of brilliance odyssey had, it had 20 let downs.

I almost want to trashbag my switch, i really hope bowser's fury is good. Maybe the system can have some sort of legacy for me, lol
