Just wanted to let everyone know I'm off the politics board too, same reasons as Omega Supreme Holopsicon Omega Supreme Holopsicon .

The Official Ban page doesn't indicate soft section bans so just wanted to let friends know where I went. I'll probaly still be posting in off topic, the bitcoin thread looks interesting.

Like I said privately to evilore I do get why he is doing what he's got to do -- but it does hurt being a long time member that stood up for him and the site when the hell of 2017 went down. I'd like to think this isn't particularly easy for him either.

For those I did verbal ideological battles with over the years I wish you the best. For those of you who became my friends the vampire Muppet will miss you guys.

Is there any chance I can at least view the politics forum instead of having to log out or at least a time frame on the ban. I was slightly drunk yesterday, being hyperbolic and over the top. It's not like I'm a regular poster there, I just like to get some feel for what's going on in the world without having to spend my time on MSM or Twitter.

Sorry... I'm new... but I lurked and EviLore's post about stopping conspiracy posting etc is the reason I decided I'd make an account... The forum feels like a real... leading forum for the whole spectrum now, it feels like reality has a prime position in the pantheon of subjects we talk about here now...

This place has so many active users, it should be a forum with a wide and healthy range of posters... I think republicans and democrats have really good, subtle things to debate - taxes, big government, foreign policy, green tech, etc - there's plenty of space for politics if you take out the wild stuff that's popped up in the last few years... Anyway, it's not my place, I'll go back to the neo member jacuzzi :p

The next step is taking your political banter to other boards, even if vagueposting it

It's a shame it took a violent coup attempt and GAF no doubt being afraid of ending up on an FBI list of terrorist-supporting sites for things to change around here rather than common decency. The fact that there was a ton of alt-right, white nationalist crazy shit being posted on here was brought up at several points ages ago in this very thread but was always shrugged off. Well hey, we got there in the end.

Glad to see the guy celebrating the Christchurch shooter was banned recently, as was Mr. 'White replacement' (again, shame they weren't banned for, you know, celebrating a mass shooting and being a Nazi when they first did it).

Still a few more common nutters about but I'm sure they'll be unable to control themselves very soon or will request bans because their grip on the echo chamber is slipping.

"Alt-right" is a nebulous term so you don't need to provide receipts for that, but I will say that you're talking out of your ass in painting with such a broad brush.

I would rather just point towards some of the long time users getting banned now for white nationalist shit. This stuff doesn't exist in a vacuum, it was always there, just tolerated (when it never should have been).

One recent example that comes to mind was when Nobody_Important made a thread about the Proud Boys breaking up because some of them wanted to be even more openly racist, the thread quickly devolved into a defence of the "Proud Goys". And whilst some people were banned for being way too obvious with their racism, a good number who were on board the "Great Replacement" train weren't and still aren't.

And yes, the Great Replacement is an openly white nationalist theory:

Highlight specific posts within context, not just your personal interpretation. White nationalist views have always been met with a swift perm here. I posit that you are leveraging a crisis to push an agenda and paint GAF as something that it is not and has never been.

That's a locked thread with a lot of bans. Are you being proactive with the report button to highlight questionable content? Do you expect people to be insta permed for the slightest whiff of wrongthink?

I could go through the ban list and find hundreds of people banned for racist remarks. To misrepresent jokes out of context - jokes that were made at the expense of the faction that split from the Proud Boys - in order to paint GAF as something it’s not is utterly slanderous. The kind of person who would lie, misrepresent, and distort context for cheap political points is the same kind of person who caused GAF to split in the first place.

Not going to comment on whether they’re white nationalists or not, but I’ve seen at least a couple of people recently banned for saying that America was a country made for white people by white people. Pretty stomach churning stuff.

The new regs to stop conspiracy theory stuff have forced some very unpleasant opinions out of people who might have kept them hidden otherwise.

Lancing a boil springs to mind....

Exactly. They were banned and always have been whenever they’ve said racist things. What you’re saying seems to be something like “well they always wanted to say it but the new regs are doing a good job because they’re forcing it out of them”. This is veering towards advocating for precog thoughtcrime. No, that’s not what we do in the West. We don’t exile people on hunches and suspicion. We do it when they say it openly and explicitly and that’s what GAF moderation has always done. The coward you’re sticking up for is misrepresenting and distorting context in an attempt to rewrite history and score political points. He’s now refusing to stand behind what he said and is resorting to cowardly reactions.

I’m not defending or chastising anyone for their opinions. I’m just stating what I’ve seen. And I’m fucking delighted that people like that are being banned. I was frankly shocked that nazi pieces of shit (and I definitely use that term seriously and properly for once) like that were hiding on the site. Fervently hoping that if there are any more they just leave without having to be banned.

I do agree with you that types like that are / were very much in the minority on here. Otherwise I would have left a long time ago.

I saw a lot of Trump loving (which I turned very sour on after the 2020 election and especially after the Capitol thing happening), and people being opposed to woke bullshit.
But in no way I saw "white nationalists" posting there. And if, they got weeded out pretty quickly, imo.

And please get out with that "alt right"-bullshit for everything that's not modern weirdo leftist and just good old plain conservativism.

I always liked the diversity of views in the politics forum and that people can talk freely. Within certain boundaries dictated by decency.
