I just finished reading the interaction there and Schrödinger’s cat being permed for that seemed harsh. I most definitely like to see him and Super Mario moved to temp. Making a request for some compassion here.

If Liberty requested a ban, nothing can't be done obviously and his wishes I definitely respect.

That's some serious sniping. Don't know about SC, had him on ignore. Liberty4All seemed like a chill poster in gaming but he also posted a lot of very very conspiracy-like theories for Trump win after the election, including EC Jan 6 upset of "unfaithful electors". And he actually believed all this so I am unfortunately not surprised. I assume he requested a ban as he did post very recently in this thread.

I think he wanted to believe it, but he was usually careful to preface his posts with, "I don't actually know what's true" and never rabidly or angrily defended what he shared against reasonable rebuttal. But as the Reason message says, people who are into that kind of stuff aren't welcome anymore and that's that.

Was the the perm for Schrödinger’s cat necessary? He had some of the most well thought out posts I’ve ever seen here.

To be fair it wasn't as if I followed sc around so I'm not sure what his full post history was all about but 90% of the posts I did see basically summed up to "you're stupid, here are a bunch of words that make me look smart while I drown you with condescending smarm". I cant recall ever reading a well thought out point beyond that, it was always seemed to be some sort of backhanded insult. But like I said I dont know his post history, regardless though he flew too close to the sun with his post conflating Jan 6 to American independence.

Another one bites the dust.

I personally wouldn't have equated 1/6 to 7/4.

But regarding the comments on "being banned for wrongthink"; Super Mario's ban for example certainly comes across that way. I too hope that cooler heads can prevail, and that some of these bans get reduced from permanent.

I wouldn't have either, as the Signing has nothing to do with a riot. It is, however, perfectly fair to compare any modern political riots with the political violence during the American Revolution. Equating to the Boston Massacre or Boston Tea Party, for example. Both are violent events used as political tools at the time.

I can see topics and particular subjects which are the cumulative result of the bans recently. This has happened before and justifiably so. The same relevant game forum behavior standards for posters on GAF don't differ for a user who's been here 15-years and one who's been here for 15-days. I may not like permabans either but I'm not big into seeing people drive the forum away from it's gaming base and into a cospiracy hang-out. I had that issue with Facebook back when I seldom used it and that type of posting should be left to places like Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook. Just not a good fit to see that going on here. Imagine describing NeoGAF to a gaming friend who's never heard of us and they join and find posters talking about race I.Q. and/or justifying posts of the January 6th violence. Do you think they'd stick around? There's your answer. We have places to go off-the-handle that are not here on the forum. Members also aren't being forced to comment on topics or threads that rub them wrong; they can opt to walk away or just take a short vacation.

I have a proposal for the recent bannings. Beyond the users being blatantly racists and nonsensical.

Rather than outright perming them. Remove them from politics and if they continue their discourse on the other boards then perm them. Allow them to request a rejoining of politics after a probationary period, if they behave on the other boards during the probationary period.

I would like to suggest this for some of the recent bannings like Super Mario, Schrödinger’s cat, Liberty4all (unless L4A requested it)

I think the perm for Schrödinger's cat Schrödinger's cat is a bit harsh. I don't think the intention of his post was to somehow condone what happened on January 6th but rather just to point out the fact that from the British point of view US independence movement was seen as an insurrection and that history is written by the victors. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter as they say. In China the CCP legacy is that of revolutionary heroes because they won but they would've been labelled terrorists had they lost.

Some of these hard-core Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists are definitely a lost cause, but maybe some of the more moderate members that generally make good contributions could do with like a one month ban to cool off, telling them to up their game a bit when they come back.

I would say again that from what I see we're quick and efficient in banning needy, zealous, Resetera types, which is understandable with the experience of exodus, betrayal and the worst of left-wing cancelling and name-calling. I also saw much more lenience to the other side of the spectrum because maybe there was no real negative experience from that group that necessitated action so far.
Should also be understood that things were not stabilized yet throughout 2018. Daily troll bombs from Reset zealots made it challenging to rebuild. Some people were pure scumlords, and some other people were cool and supportive. This tended to correspond to particular political alignments.

I'd appreciate it if people stopped ignoring the guidelines and didn't make excuses for the storming of the Capitol, so that all this can be put to rest.

Schrodinger was one of my favorite posters and I don't understand why he was banned. It was true what he said. It wasn't supporting 1/6 or conflating it.

Seconded. Schrodinger's cat is a smart guy and one bad post shouldn't result in a perm. If I can cash in my imaginary free from perm card it would be him. EviLore EviLore

What time is it?
Regarding the GiantBomb thread closure:

EviLore EviLore was correct to lock the GB thread in my opinion, some of us (myself included) were being overly cynical and it was getting personal in there.

I get why EviLore EviLore locked the thread, I just wish there was a middle ground. You can dunk on the content a website produces without making personal insults about staff appearance, health concerns and brining in their loved ones. I still think their is value in discussing their content for both lapsed and current fans, especially with their GOTY content rolling out. It just requires us to act with a modicum of tact.

Agree, and I would probably add cryptoadam cryptoadam , Riven326 Riven326 , and Cybrwzrd Cybrwzrd to the list.

Schrodinger and Liberty gone?

Figured they’d be able to rein it in a bit. Found them both insufferable personally, but you couldn’t fault their commitment to making a point or an argument.

Edit - ok, yikes. July 4th is not like January 6th. He’d probably retract that at a different time. I think things will be calmer after Biden’s been shuffling around The West Wing for a month or two.

Yeah I never understood Schrodinger - his the only member I know that dealt in absolutes and almost always filled with ad hominem attacks if the other poster fell on the other side of the line

Hopefully he will change his posting etiquette when he returns

R RNK bails from topic after reading replies.

Nothing about those replies would cause me to bail on the thread lol.

My point was that I don't worry about what I look at, or who I talk to, because I know she trusts me. If she gets to a point where she feels the need to look through my phone, or check my e-mail, then we've already gotten to a point where there's a problem. The one thing I've learned from the many relationships I've been in, is that trust is the most important foundation of any long term relationship. If you disagree, that's fine. Everybody has their own relationship philosophies. For me though, without trust, you don't have anything.

I believe so. I'd love to go to bat for him but he had multiple chances from what I saw. Damn shame.
I don''t know about batting for him. He posted a lot of dubiously sourced agenda-driven topics in Politics. He sure made a lot of threads but I'd like to see how Politics fares without such inundation.
Maybe he can get some lenience to get back to other forums though after a month or so?

I think overall he was an alright guy but politics was taking him down an overtly negative path. I'd like to see him back because he was a big rlm fan and I miss his discussion there.

EviLore EviLore for what it's worth (and I've said this before) SC has been one of the more consistent users in advocating non-violence in times of turmoil, so his inelegant comparison probably didn't mean to actually condone violence. He does have a problem with non-constructive overly antagonizing verbiage, but that's a different matter.

Didn't Crypto get another chance and then continued in Off-Topic?
I think so. A month off would have been a fair interrim step before perm in my opinion, that's all.
Cyber deserved to be permed. The analogy he used was gross man.
What was the analogy? His particular ban didn't have a post linked. All I saw was that he didn't seem to be "outraged enough" about 1/6, and he was of the opinion that the "summer of love" is/was worse. If he said something particularly egregious that I missed, I could stand corrected.

Are you sure about that? What are the most glaring examples, in your opinion?

It's a conspiracy.
No, I honestly tried to give you some good faith feedback on a community I cared a lot about. I posted here a ton during the exodus and in the days after to try to deter as many people as I could from leaving and to keep this place alive. I thought we had a great opportunity to turn around a legendary gaming site and I bought in on the vision you laid out for us. I've made a greater effort into creating OTs to that end and put a lot of effort into them.

But I guess I'll just take that permaban now instead.

The thing about SC he doesn't advocate for violence. For example, when Trump pardoned the military contractors he was firmly against that. Boss Mog Boss Mog eloquently conveyed the right message.

I also think politics are taking people down the wrong path. I don't want this site to become another REEE but I also don't want it to become another QANON. I'll poke fun at both sides despite me being a conservative.

My goodness if you couldn't detect the sarcasm of EL's post then its not only your sarcasm meter that is broken.

Also this down in the dumps attitude needs to end. Don't call a fork a spade and don't try to scramble an egg with a spoon, all that really is said is ''Hey, don't make a Disney fairytale of this story''. That's it.

Tons of other stuff to talk about. Why purposefully crash into the one sign that says ''Don't crash into this particular sign''?

No doubt this is a weird year, and most of it links together with a red vs blue influence.

- Election
- BLM
- Antifa
- Capitol Hill storm
- Covid (loss of jobs, stuck at home, vaccines etc...)
- Stock market dropped like a rock and then rebounded hard (gut wrenching roller coaster ride where most stocks dropped 30% in March. One of mine dropped 75%)

Time to step back folks.

Yes, some of us got affected more than others in terms of job, money and health. Yes, some of us might have lost someone to covid etc.... but if you ignore the media blitz and arguing with other people on forums (GAF or any other forum), I bet most of us didn't get affected as badly as the media say. The media makes it look like every block in every city is burning down and even the politicians positioning is BS. From heated debates yelling at each other, then suddenly Kamala Harris is Biden's VP. So it shows even they don't take things as seriously as it looks at face value.

NFL playoffs are on (Brees blew it again), and NBA and NHL seasons barely started. Have fun.

Tune out the crud and conflict (as Howard Stern said one time on radio.... conflict gets ratings) especially if you get too heated. I know in forums people want to vent and win every debate, but forget it. Leave the heated threads and let the people with thicker skin battle it out for the silly internet warrior crown.

II sure hope so! He also didn't start dozens of biased threads I guess. I find his stance on a lot of topics to be untenable and his arguments are often fallacious despite the wording. He does have a set of ideas he adheres to but they lead to conclusion I can not support.
I will however unignore him and when he comes back will try again to see if there's any common ground to be found.
