[Crowbcat] overpromise, sell, underdeliver Cyberpunk 2077

they were asking about the 4 hour preview in june. that is mainly the prologue and if you are doing missions you won't notice the shallow random npcs AI. how cut content affects the final game or if there are bad design decisions and lackluster rpg mechanics is subjective and you are not going to be able to really judge those things in the first 4 hours.

so they were basically blown away by the atmosphere of the city and the missions and they were playing on pc so that means less bugs but also you expect developers to fix the bugs by the time the game launches. and it's not like reviewers changed their mind a lot when the game launched. after all the shitstorm the game is still sitting at 86 on metacritic so that means that they really liked it.

absolutely wrong. they played the actual game.
Well. I have to agree with you there, that's a probable explanation (but its valid only for the 4 hour slide demo, not for the full reviews once the game launched).

By the way, why didn't the game get lower scores at metacritic as the time went by? Did they stop adding reviews or the reviews they added later were all in the high 80s?

the game did get a lot of lower scores as the time went by. it was sitting at 90-91 at release.

it certainly blows garbage like Assassins Creed out of the water.

Now that I can believe. Most of these open-world franchises are painfully boring to me, and kill off any wonder of at the world's scope by having terrible missions & scripted sequences, with no "living" feel of interaction to the surroundings at all (Breath of the Wild stands out here, and is closer to what I _want_ from open world, despite being simplified on other fronts). I certainly don't think Cyberpunk is the only bad one here.

I've always wondered with this kind of game (huge assets... entire city designed, which is still valuable despite being empty) whether the company could somehow sell all the assets to someone else, and have a different, perhaps more inventive team start with an entire playground of assets ready-made, just needing a new game concept to put inside.

I mean, I bet there are quite a few teams with inventive ideas that could take place in that city. Maybe: make a "Cyberpunk stories" game compilation where they hire 10 different small teams to create clever little story-based games inside the cyberpunk world, with access to all its assets. Release on a single disc with cool art, and encourage the devs to do completely different things with the setting.

Wow, even when they fix the bugs it still looks like it’s going to be kind of lame. The whole world looks so static and fake.
The game has promise. The concept and setting is amazing and in the hands of a competent team like Rockstar, I'm sure this game would be a world beater with plenty of time and resources but CDPR pushed themselves too far to implement all these ambitious ideas they had for this game.

I mean even Rockstar who is considered to be the kings of open world games would struggle to implement all these ideas in the same timeframe that CDPR had with this game.
You have like 1 GTA game per generation now. That's how long it takes to get such a game off the ground and into gamers hands.
Looking at the scope of this game, it needs much more time than that.
You don't want to half ass things and it looks like time played its part in them half assing alot of things with this game.
CDPR just bit off more than they could chew.

I am not the type who is afraid to say when a game is trash. You see me talk crap about GTA V and there was a time when Rockstar could do no wrong to me. I bought Death Stranding on day 1 and I hated it. The thing is that I acknowledge this game has issues and flaws but overall I get much enjoyment out of it plus Night City is one of the best designed cities I have seen in a game. Despite the AI which could use a lot of improvement there is plenty of environmental storytelling and not to mention the actual story and characters are up there with RDR2 and TLOU series. I never even played Witcher 3 and I my fell for Cyberpunk shortly after I saw that 2018 trailer but they pleasantly surprised me. The Dumb NPCs don't take away from everything else I like about the game.

man, finally watched :messenger_tears_of_joy:

he trashes it comparing to GTA San Andreas on PS2, among others :messenger_tears_of_joy:

and all the promises, since 2012. Only 8 years in the making, but last few months to fix remaining bugs :messenger_tears_of_joy:

but hey, the important thing is that it's not a flop, it sold 13 millions copies to suckers

We need a futuristic GTA to redeem this BS of a game!

The GTA from the PS4/ONE generation was the same one from the PS3/360 generation, so we didn't even get a bespoke entry. I don't think they didn't release a new one because of how long it takes to make a new one. I think they didn't release a new one because GTA online was their focus. At least we got RDR2.

Doesn't really make sense but....ok. I don't believe all of Rockstar is just making GTAV online stuff, very unlikely considering the existence of Red Dead 2. I think it takes a great deal of time and I think they can afford to maintain their reputation, build a bigger team and wait to release GTAVI when they are ready. So I don't think GTA online has much to really do with them still working on GTAVI.

If that was the cause we would have never got RDR2 as clearly...."we got RDR2". So them working on online isn't stopping the rest of their teams from regular game development. The recently bought some team in India too.
