Xbox Raises Price of 6-month Gold Sub to $59.99 (Up: Policy reversed, prices to stay the same)

Paying to play online is a scam. It's a hidden cost that largely goes ignored when considering if consoles are better value products.

Then Xbox also has the audacity to charge you for propriety storage expansion.

Yeah, no thanks.
You think these things are stored on magic clouds in the sky powered by the wind that blows them? And they raid gold on the money trees below.

If legit, Phil must’ve been licking his lips with the cross play initiatives coming to fruition. Any drops in online play on Xbox will be less felt.

If 30% of players drop online, yet price is 100% more, it’s a win for ms back pocket.

No it’s not! They’re losing money as we speak! Like do any of you know how to do basic math?

That’s why I was afraid to even get in on this but it’s great for the time being for those who copped super cheap subs!

I just knew they were gonna shoot that price up in a stealthy way until someone caught on and then they’d explain why?

Y’all really think they trying to eat the $7bil and all that halo dev and marketing costs?

Remember the clown 🤡

I am most certainly not a fan of this guy, but I can at least recognize the fact both Jeff Grubb and Jason Shreier have been quite accurate so far, meaning they definitely have reliable sources.

So, assuming this price increase is legit, then I think all online multiplayer will be free on Xbox and the new Gold would basically be an alternative name of Game Pass (coexisting with the Game Pass brand).

Think about it... Game Pass is $10 per month / $120 yearly, which is exactly the same amount as this supposedly new Gold price, so I imagine instead of completely retiring their XBL Gold brand, Microsoft would want to encourage those current Gold sub members to resub to the ‘new Gold’ (aka Game Pass) this way.

Whoa whoa whoa, what did I do to deserve such a vigorous finger blasting.

Somehow it is now a confirmation because it fits the narrative.

Anything is possible, I guess we'll know in time. Seems like a stupid move to create the lowest priced console available but then combine that with the most expensive services (in comparison to the competition). I can see a move like this killing their sales if Sony stays with current pricing. Unless they are changing up what is included with Gold.

How much do you actually think it costs for them to maintain their servers? Paying for online is a scam, if it costs anything of significance why is it free on PC? Why did Sony offer it for free for the entire PS3 Gen? Maybe cause it doesn't cost shit. Console gamers eat this scam up, well not most, about 1/3 of you do.

Don't know what it costs at Costco USA, but Costco Canada has had 12 month Xbox Gold cards for $60 for probably 10 years. Just checked now.

I went to Costco USA, but it requires you to sign into the US site which my .CA login doesn't work there, but it seems US has 12 month and even 24 month(!) cards there. The 24 month card has a $99.99 stamp on it, but not sure what it actually sells for.

Are pc gamers from poor countries on average like Russia, Eastern Europe etc who can't afford the premium? I. Dunno why but ps plus is fantastic value.

Didn't get the memo regarding the 14th Amendment
This would be a huge mistake by Xbox. I understand if they don't want to get rid of the multiplayer paywall (though I wish they would), but increasing Xbox Live in order to artificially inflate the value of Game Pass Ultimate when GPU is already extremely valuable on its own? That's just scummy (if this is true).

I hope you stocked up on 1 year cards boys.

3 years locked in.
Gonna stock up on another 3 years of cards just in case.

Ultimate conversion still works so not really an issue for me.

Even if this is fake paying for online is a fucking scam and these corps should be ashamed of themselves. They take fucking 30% of every purchase from devs and have the fucking balls to ask us to pay for online. Disgusting and one of the main reasons I'm done with consoles.

If it's true I'm done with gold/GP when my ultimate expires at the end of the year. I'm a gold subscriber since day 1 but I never really used it and even Gamepass I barely play any games. I'm all excited to download them but then I never play lol. I'd rather own games or buy the complete edition with all the dlc (always cheaper).

I just stacked 3 years of PS plus for less than 100$ so I'm good with my PS5 if they pull the same shit.

$60/year in the USA.

I'd never actually pay that for it & have a few years of cards stacked that I probably paid about $30-35/year for as I accrued them the past couple years.

Just like with XBL, the official sticker price is for lazies and dummies. Techy peeps and geeks like us generally pay as little as half the asking price for both services so my guess is that trend would continue. Even if we do see price hikes for one or both services the real "street price" for many of us will be like 50-60% of the MSRP. That said, if this happens it'll end up roughly doubling the cost even savvy penny pinchers pay, which is an unacceptable increase IMHO.

I was just about to drop a note suggesting people check out Costco for their 24 month subs. Even though I have a few years of Gold in reserve, I went ahead and just picked up a couple more years from Costco tonight. The "membership" Price is $94.99 for 24 months. So, basically $47.50/year. That's higher than I I typically pay for a year by about $12-15, but on the off chance this price hike is real I want to stack at least a couple more years from a reliable source. Costco is simply the best option for practically everything in the states in terms of customer service so I don't mind paying a little more than usual, especially if this price increase is legit. I think I have 5 years of Gold in reserve now. I'll prob pop for a couple more years if the price increase is verified then when my Gamepass Ultimate expires later this year I'll let it lapse and revert to Gold.

No, still a waste of money.
Personally, I don't do multiplayer much. But 60€/year is still a worthy tradeoff for me, because of the "free" games. Sure, in any given month it may be that the games on offer don't interest me or I have already bought. But there are rare gems and also games I wouldn't have thought of buying but ended up liking.

Damn from Free Gold to double the price.....:messenger_medmask:

Xbox "insiders" never fail to provide a good laugh as do the sheep that parrot what they say...:messenger_grinning_sweat:

I guess if you look at it from the perspective of manufacturing positive vibes and hype in the lead up to launch those narratives were a mild success to keep the diehards from fleeing the pen during tough times. Those folks still don't get it... or they do and feel helpless (crazy). You don't owe your allegiance to MS bank account lmao... Reality tho...

At the same time it's not a laughing matter as well: Folks forget Jim is the man now. Sony may very well follow considering the history here.... even if they increase the value proposition by adding PSNow or some of those anime subs.

Disappointing all around. Which means it's time to stock up on PS+ yearly. CDKeys here I come.

For that price they ought to be including gamepass of some sort.

Yeah, no thanks.

Spot on. Paying for online, game prices, being shafted on peripherals, it all adds up over time.

DarkMage619 DarkMage619 care to explain what's wrong with that post? I take it 1 laughing emoji = 1 butthurt in this case?

If they tried to sell Gold for 100 quid a year, I’d sell and buy a PS5 in a heartbeat. Simple as that.

I already choke at having to give them 40 quid a year.

There bound to be a scale. If 6 months is $60, then expect 12m to be no more than $100. But yes, it’s gouging, plain and simple.

edit: did you have 120 quid originall? Lol
