PlayStation 5 [OT] Taking Over The World One SSD At A Time

Sony has had great offerings in this regard. I bought my Golds for like 90 bucks, then my Plats for 110 bucks or so on Amazon. For the price, the sound quality on those two sets is amazing. Those two sets got me through pretty much all of last gen.

I have been using a couple different sets with my PS5 so far, but plan on checking out the Pulse 3Ds when I see a good deal for them. I used to love my Arctis 7's but haven't used them in awhile, been alternating between a couple newer pairs.

Professional reviewers love to ding 100 dollar headsets for not matching certain qualities of 600 dollar studio cans, that never really felt fair to me.

Me here spending $247 (95 OMR) on Astro A40 + Mixamp to have the flatest bass experience ever! It's the best set to listen to news, not gaming. Funnily, Pulse 3D is better in every way, including clarity. But those are before the 2018 refresh model, which released like 2 months after my purchase.

I think you'd be impressed by them, especially on the bass levels coming from the Arctis 7s. I had $10 in rewards from the X900H, so I'd gladly $90 and some change all day long for these. They will probably suck me into a Platinum model if they come out with them as well. I have yet to test these with the Tempest which is where I heard they really shine since no PS5 yet, but, having used them with RDR2 set to Surround in the game, and I was blown away.

I was hearing little sound intricacies in more detail that I did not even hear with my home audio system's surround. Definitely impressed for the price, and even though I love how the floor and couch shake from the bass on horseback, I still find myself wanting to use the headset more. At least at the moment.

Just a heads up, for anyone looking at third party aftermarket cooling fans for the PS5, Steve from GN just put up a review of two of these products that are "basically a scam," the fans blow the wrong direction and the products basically do nothing

I wonder if anyone really needs a fan mod though. Maybe it is because I set up my gaming room in the coolest part of the house with nice ventilation but the system never seems to get very hot at all. Just me, though, YMMV.

Same. I really like the Pulse headset, great range and clarity with good balanced sound.

Very good value for $100.

It's just a scam, you don't need any extra cooling for PS5. PS4 would've made sense to some.

I’ve decided not to get an Xbox Series X after selling my PS5. Instead, I am going to try my best to catch a PS5 Digital Edition on sale soon and cop that. I’m just too deep into the PlayStation ecosystem to opt out at this point. I’ve spent way too much money on games and all that. Besides, I like Sony’s offerings a lot better than Microsoft’s. Not that I am bashing them or anything. Just my preference. Here’s to hoping I can secure that Digital Edition soon, guys.

Did you "need" to sell your PS5? You could've easily waited for the DE then sell your PS5. In any case, hope you secure one soon!

"on sale" Good one. You'll be lucky to get one for MSRP without any stuff bundled with the console to get rid of the extra stock. Pretty much all offerings (DE, bluray, only the console, bundle) get sold out almost immediately.

I can understand wanting to stay within the same ecosystem. I wouldn't make a full switch myself, because most of my games and friends are in Sony's camp (I'll still buy an XSX, but a few years from now and only for a couple games).

Finished Control yesterday. Very good game. Very creative and compelling. Fun combat mechanics. The DualSense implementation is probably the best I've seen so far. The feel of the different guns is excellent and adds a lot of immersion. The gunplay feels so satisfying. I really hope other developers take notes here. God, I love DualSense, it's a game changer for me when done right.

Have several glitched trophies, just beat Tomassi 2 and started the DLC last night.

Kinda pissed off... they are all things that just seemed to stop counting. 25 control points, 1000 hiss kills, files etc.

Fair point 🙂 Astros Playroom really showcased the DualSense in the best possible way.

Glitched trophies are very frustrating. Haven't encountered any in Control myself but I have a couple left to unlock so fingers crossed 😊

They've always been a scam, and the cheaply made/parts power supply passthrough has a chance of damaging your system more often than not.

Never buy this junk, people.

I love Control. I just love the game. I get it has flaws, but it just worked for me. Really cool that it was free on PS+ this month.

I enjoyed the DualSense support as well. I remember there was a thread where someone was complaining about the footstep rumble, but can't that be adjusted in the menu?

That's frustrating. Hope it gets fixed for you, the Plat only took about 17 hours from what I remember. I had beaten the game on PC previously, so maybe I got through it a little quicker.

Control is good but the best Dualsense implementation is in Astro.
I hope we get more games soon that come close to what Asro's Playroom does with the DualSense. I get that the game is basically a PS5/DualSense showcase, but still. Some games have had great DualSense support, for sure, but so far Astro's Playroom stands alone at the top.

Glitched trophies must be related to the ultimate edition, I didn't encounter any in the original edition of the game.
I 100 percented the UE (DLC and all) and didn't encounter a glitched trophy. Could just be bad luck, or good luck on my part, I dunno

Here’s to hoping I can secure that Digital Edition soon, guys.

Anyone have Dirt 5 for ps5? Thinking about buying it with it being on sale on psn. Appreciate any impressions!

There are about a dozen analysis threads for it, if you want to read from people who never planned on playing it in the first place. ;)

I saw the sale too, thought about buying it. 30 bucks is fair, heard it is a pretty easy Plat

Yeah, it was a great game. Can't believe it was free on plus, I would have no problem buying this full price. I think I will anyway because I want to show Remedy my support for creating such an awesome experience.

You can turn off or lower the DualSense effect in the menus, but that means you turn everything off. To my knowledge you can't turn off individual things, such as the footsteps. I didn't mind though, though it was a pretty neat effect. After a while I completely forgot about it because the rest of the game was so absorbing and fun.

Have Sony and/or Cerny stated if the internal expansion drives are going to need their own heatsinks (different models are sold with or without them) in order to function optimally in the PS5?

It looks like there there is a little bit of room between where the drive will rest and where the cover to the bay is, I assume leaving some headroom for heatsink if needed?

On sale? That’s a tough one. The digital went on sale on various retailers this week (BB, Target, PS Direct, Antonline) . I managed to snatch a digital this week and a disc a few weeks ago (Best Buy and Walmart)

So I bought Sinking City now that it's 30% off on PS plus discount. Coming from Switch, naturally, this is a huge jump in quality. Frogwares states the game runs at native 4K at 60 fps. It looks very good. Sharp. Atmospheric as hell. The city is more densely populated, more cars, debris, general strangeness going around. For example, got randomly attacked by a deranged local.

No drops in frames, but encountered the occasional stutter. Paranoia effects are more varied. DualSense implementation for combat is okay, it's not Control, but it does try to simulate the difference in weapons you acquire and adds to the realism.

Fast travel is lightning fast. 2-3 seconds tops. And this is for starting game from menu too. On Switch it was maybe 1-2 minutes for fast travel and death and 3-4 minutes starting a game from menu.

What I like most about Sinking City is the strong writing and story which are centered around Lovecraftian lore. But it also feels like an old school Silent Hill with the creepy town, mysterious story, clunky combat and piecing together clues about what has happened. Imagine if the rumors are true about Sony bringing its triple A touch to Silent Hill. It would be nothing short of amazing.

Overall a very pleasant experience so far. PS5 really brings out the best of these last gen games.

No drops in frames, but encountered the occasional stutter.

When I played the game on PC, it was back when I had a 2070 Super, and even at 1440p it got a little framey/stuttery on me. if the PS5 is doing even better in that regard, that's impressive.

The atmosphere of the game is top notch, though. You're right on, there.

Edit:

I wonder if VG Tech will do an analysis of it. I dunno if it will cross DF or NX's radar, but VGT seems to make time for smaller releases.

edit 2:

When is the next State of Play? Wonder if it will be centered around Ratchet?

Most likely no.

The Western Digital SN850 Gen4 M.2 SSD is 7 GB/s read, which should be plenty fast for the PS5.

There are 2 versions, with or without heatsink. The version with heatsink is too large to fit inside the PS5 bay.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I get alerts anytime the SN850 or 980 Pro are back in stock. I have come close to picking up a 2TB variant of either one about a dozen times, but just worry about the chance that either one won't end up being officially compatible, even though both, on paper, are fast enough.

Any idea how ps4 bc titles that supported 3d audio on ps4 behave on ps5?
The 3d audio is set default to on in ps5 system settings so sony expects most users to just use it.
I play with pulse 3d and Demons Souls sounds amazing but wanted to get into some older ps4 games and wonder if it should be on.
btw - any idea if Death Stranding used 3d audio on ps4 ? Deciding if I should replay it on steam or ps5 or wait.. I mean pc is obvious, 4k60, dlss for super clear, stable image but ps5 have motion controls and maybe 3d audio?

It’s should work if it’s already setup for 3D audio like first party PS4 games. For third party you’re probably better off turn it off and using the games setup for headphones audio. It’s processing audio either way. You just don’t want to double up

Every game I have played on PS5 sounds better than I remember on PS4, except Control UE (just something up with that version of the game).

Ghost, TLOU2, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, Death Stranding, inFamous SS, etc, all sound amazing on my headphones with my PS5. In Ghost I hear arrows flying past me, enemies above me, etc.

I don't know for sure how the tempest audio engine works but in old PCs everything would sound better when you upgraded the sound card (which doesn't happen anymore cuz mobos have fine onboard sound). But, if I had to guess, I would say that every game is getting a boost from the new audio chip, even PS4 games. I could be wrong.

Considering Sony promised to release list of approved SSDs I'd expect it wll be detailed and correct models will be listed.

Also afaik only possible candidates at the moment are Samsung 980 Pro and WD SN850 and those don't have variants.

I dont think you will be able to get the actual 3D sound unless the game is specifically tailored to take advantage of it. Its possible they changed the way higher frequencies are panned similar to how a 5.1 setup can give the illusion of a wider soundstage, but that seems like a blunt and inaccurate way of handling the games audio.

Maybe some games will benefit from having a more capable and dedicated audiochip, possibly being able to handle more source sounds without the risk of distorting the sound.

But to get actual, accurate sounds positioned in a 3D space and give an accurate representation of reflections and the diffusion of the sound hitting different materials the audio probably needs to been engineered and built around having that functionality.

That makes sense OP if you need to be in the PS5 ecosystem. But I would really caution you with moving to a PS5DE. Saving 100$ on the price tag is a really shortsighted move as this consoles software is really freaking expensive. In secondary markets, you can get discounted disc's, but a PS5DE will land you MSRP every time plus applicable sales tax if you're in the US (and for our international gaffers, the digital MSRP gets really freaking insane, especially for the aussies).

If money is very tight I feel like the best option would be an S or X with all access when it's available and pick up a cheap used PS4 since HFW is confirmed and GOD:Ragnarok is rumored to be cross gen. Or keep your PS5. Unless you are going to get a ridiculous price for it on the secondary market, this feels like a move that will cost you more money than save any. I only could find a PS5 DE and while I greatly prefer the aesthetic to the fat PS5, I can already feel how much more expensive it's going to be (I make enough that I can afford to be a little frivolous, but this is still makes me hesitant). I'm considering trying to find a PS5 disk and offloading my DE when that time comes.

Are PS+ monthly games still only available for that month?

I’ve managed to get a PS5 but it won’t arrive till March. I like the look of this months games and don’t want to miss out on them. I’m wondering if I should sign up to PS+ now so I don’t miss out on them.
Yeah. I think destruction all stars gets an extra month but not sure and the PS collection to PS5 owners is still active. But the monthly games are just a month.

This month has quite a nice list of PS+ games so it might be worth to sign up now unless you do not find yourself playing any of them.

I had no luck, I can see where it's stuck on the cards.I'm just going to play a bit more and then restart the game... looks like the 100 skill points is glitched too. :(

I cleaned and vacuumed the dust catchers on my PS5 DE for the first time today, after seeing dust build up along the ”gills”. A word of advice, look up how to peel of the sideplates. They are supposed to come off quite easy, no need to try force it. If the plastic is bending, you are doing it wrong.

I also noticed the white plastic left some ”skidmarks” on the black inner body, it almost seems unavoidable. The marks wont be noticable when the plates are back on though.

Aren’t you supposed to shift it before lifting it up? I took mine off to check my fan model.
