Did I “get gud” at Dark Souls?

There is a shortcut to make going back through Sen’s much quicker should you want/need to, and which also by proxy has some other benefits.
Hint of how to do that:
You can make that jump between the bonfire and the boss
Trust friend. My ass made the bonfire. Wasn’t tracking through Sens every time to have a shot at the boss lol would take AGES. Not sure how a newbie would do it having never found the bonfire frankly

Umm. Question

id like to go see Andre (upgrade my weapon to +15) I’ve saved at the bonfire in Anor Londo. Flew back. Puts me back at the Iron Golem place. Any easy way back to Andre in the undead parish?

That’s the shortcut I was on about, I can give less cryptic hints if you like

I had to be told about the secret bonfire, with those fire bombs I wasn’t about to notice a gap in the railing

Nah. Be whatever. Need to upgrade my weapon
From the bonfire you walk across a high walkway and turn right (left if going backwards). There’s a broken bit leading to another tower that can be jumped across (and if you fall there’s a weapon).

After you’re done there, if you make your way back towards the boss area there’s a bit with 2 hanging cages. These are your lifts to go right down to the start.

Now you’ve been through Sen’s, there’s also something to do with the rolling boulders and being able to choose where they go. 2 directions get in your way, one goes off to nowhere, which leaves one direction.

Golum is giving me the business currently
Well you probably know you can focus on the legs to make him fall down and let you get a lot of damage in. You don't want to pull back because he has a ranged move that can blast you with air and knock you off the very small platform. I think he is weak to lightning if you have any lightning paper to put on your katana.

Other than that, if you become human, you can summon the npc Iron Tarkus in the small room to the right of the boss door. Having a 2nd target for him might be enough distraction for you to hit his legs and knock him over.

EDIT:NVM, you did it

I’ve got the cage key. But let’s say I’m at the boss arena. What’s the directions? (cause that’s where it starts me)

Can Andre get me to +15?
Only if you get another ember in the ghost town, and farm chunks. To do it this early would mean killing a guy in New londo who drops a key. Most newer players don't do new londo this early, they would go ahead into Anor Londo. But the option is there. I usually do new londo early and have +15 weapons when my character is level 30. You probably should +10 your weapon and do Anor Londo with this cage shortcut that guy mentioned. You can't miss the cages, just run from boss arena back to bonfire and you will run past the cage along the way, it looks similar to the cages big hat logan was trapped in

I’ve been to the cage. Rode in it. But that was when I was “Exploring”.

no idea where it is. I’m at the bonfire in anor londo. Would love to tackle this place with +15.

Ive got +10 already

From the boss area, follow the path backwards round the walkway. It might even be in the first room you get to after the walkways, I can’t remember exactly. But it’s a square room with a square hole in the middle and the two cages, you will see a prompt on the left one

I think New Londo would be tougher than Sen's fortress, and Anor Londo would be a more logical route for first playthrough. But if you insist, I'll explain. Want +15 now?

Is it harder? anor londo SCARES ME. Yeah. Explain then hah

Sens wasn’t bad. All told. Truly. No “frustration“ on my end. Just perseverance

From Soft KNEW we’d want to go back to firelink etc. so they made the cage in Sens fortress just for us!! how amazing!

I am aware there’s “fast travel”. But not till ya beat O&S. Which I’ve never done

Ok cool
You want to go all the way back to Firelink shrine, but stop off in that tunnel with the rat near firelink so you can go see the merchant lady at the far end of the tunnel who sells "transient curses" and stock up on a few of those. They allow you physically damage ghosts, and there are a lot of them in New Londo. From Firelink you know how to go down there. Explore through and clear out the many mischevious ghosts - watch out for when your transient curse can suddenly wear off after a time....It's nasty to be in the middle of a fight with ghosts and lose the ability to hit them. If you've had the curse on for a while you might even consider stopping and waiting for the curse to wear off just so you can apply another fresh transient curse that you know will last a good while before proceeding further.

Make your way through the ghost town until you meet a friendly guy dressed in red atop an old building full of ghosts. He'll sell spells and stuff, he's a great guy. But you gotta kill him. The key he drops will allow you to drain the waters of the flooded city below you and explore it. It is filled with nasties, including darkwraiths. They might seem pretty tough, but they drop the previous chunks you'll need, so put on the gold serpent ring from Sen's fortress and farm them. You don't need to fight the boss yet, but as you explore the depths of New Londo after opening the floodgates you will find a "Very large Ember." Take it to Andre to buff your weapon to +15. You already have a slab so you just need to farm darkwraiths until you have enough chunks to get +14. Technically you could do all this at level 1, it's just hard to do is all, especially if you are a new player.

This enough? Haven’t been yet. But do I need To farm more?

Feeling so accomplished. I’ve done ALL THIS solo. No summon. No jolly co-op. True gamer style
My philosophy of souls is that murdering and helping people is an integral part of the experience. I actually love to get summoned over and over at a boss and try new strats on the boss until I feel like I've mastered it. Which also allows me to build up a ton of souls to buy items and upgrades and stuff. And I love invading people and killing them and their friends, kicking their corpse off my sword as blood flies everywhere, reading their whiny or threatening messages after is the best.

I hear a lot of people express the same sentiments as you, saying that the real way to play dark souls is completely solo. But I feel like they're missing out. I'm really into Souls though

Gotcha. Headed there now. The transisnt curses are like 5k from that lady. No way. I’ve got two. Ummmmmmm.
There are a couple in a pottery jar early in New londo, just before a long bridge. Although that may be where you got the 2 you have. Ghosts drop them frequently, so kill ghosts with a gold serpent ring and you should be able to mass up a decent amount transient curses

There's another hidden item in Sen's that helps with item discovery in a big way, if you don't already have it.

But to be honest, I can't think of too many times when I've bothered taking a weapon to +15. The ones I have done I've upgraded mostly using the placed item pickups throughout the game.

Back to the boulder directions. You know when you were trying going through Sen's and there was that indoor path that either went up to the boulder control or down to a small room and a boulder-sized hole? See what happens when that hole starts to fill up. While you're down there, there's a room with a chest (but you might have been there already as you have the Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring)

Hmm. Maybe I’ve been there then?

u might already have it...check your rings for a gold serpent ring. Handy to wear when you are killing the darkwraiths in the area you drained of water as it will make them drop chunks more often. They also drop slabs but those are super rare, if they drop a slab, take a pic!

Hmm. I’ll check. Just quit playing earlier.

Ive got the key. Drained the water. Opened the elevator. Kicked the ladder. Only thing left to do is gather that ember. Which I shall

Accomplishments tonight

Whipped the shit out Sens fortress like an absolute boss
Making so much ground in New Londo
Kicked ladder
opened elevator
got the key
drained the water

picked up a couple badass rings in Sens
opened the shortcut

What a fantastic game. Zero frustration this session. Just perseverance and joy.

Anor Londo scares me. But it’s Coming. Once we get my Uchi to +15 per Large Ember… it’s all Anor Londo and the dreaded O&S time.

I think I found trying to figure out what to do next and where to go more challenging than the bosses. If I could eventually beat them anybody can, not even joking. Not to say the bosses aren't hard but I love how the game basically tells you to F yourself as far as guidance goes. I found that wizards assistant near the end of the game when he should have been found right after I started apparently. He gave me a tutorial I could have used 200 hours earlier. lol!!!

I was running around with a nice little mage build zapping everything. Then I got to Sens, hit one of them lizards and they were like, oh look it's a mage and he's got a pointy stick. Isn't that adorable. I think it's time to for you to go back to the last bonfire you rested at.

Good progress my dude!

I beat dark souls for the first time in 2014 it took me 90 hours lol just the base game.

I played it again recently and beat the base game and DLC in 27 hours. I feel its more about getting knowledgeable than getting gud.

Are you using a shield or mainly 2 handing your weapon? You can use all your small and large shards to upgrade a shield now that your uchi is +10.

A plus 10 shield will be able to block far more attacks without draining stamina

Good point. Hadn’t thought of that. I mainly use 1 handed, but couple times went in 2 hand.

What’s the best shield to upgrade? currently using the crest shield due to the stamina boost.

Sens wasn’t overly hard. But it was tough to learn how to get to the secret bonfire. Once ya make it there. It’s a quick hop to the boss plus you can explore easier
