Microsoft is in talks to acquire Discord, a video-game chat community, for more than $10 billion

Do it , M soft
yes, do it... like you did Skype ! and Hotmail! and Lync, and MSN messenger...

Here is a list (3x more than Google BTW)

They even discontinued this gem before it was even released!

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
Linkedin and github were succesful business that Microsoft purchased... hence the enormous amounts of money they paid.

Mixer is what happens when MS tries to start something from the ground up.
I was replying to the context of a guy comparing this (rumored) acquisition to Mixer. Mixer was also originally purchased by Microsoft as Beam.

Microsoft didn't ruin Skype, they just didn't do enough to save it.

Microsoft basically had to throw out their Windows app out at one point and so they rebuilt it using a new framework (not UWP).
Are we talking about the day I opened Skype and it had been transformed from a regular-looking desktop Windows application to some rainbow-vomit mobile app wannabe with a wildly different interface? Because that was literally the day I told myself I'd never use Skype again and found Discord.

You need to download the Skype Desktop directly from the site and not the one on Windows Store... that one is crap.
It s so weird that Windows Store version because it need to reopen every time you need to open a chat even with it at tray... the Skype from the site stay on background so you have all opened like a normal chatter app.

I can maintain all the time the Skype Desktop opened in my PC without any heavy issue like Teams.

Mixer failed, since Twitch is too big. It was too late to compete with it. I don't think Discord has similar competition in the consumer space.

Also, I don't believe that MS will merge products (other than maybe logins). No sense to mix Skype/Teams/etc with a completely different kind of product and user base.

I think this is a great move by Microsoft.

I was just thinking the other day with so many games having cross play it sure would be nice to have a PARTY CHAT that unifies all my friends without using the terrible in-game system. This makes sense for Microsoft since all their games are on Xbox and PC.

I have never used Windows Store. And this happened several years ago.

For reference, I found a Wired UK article that talked about the changeover.

But when the buzz didn’t move over, Microsoft doubled down on trying to make it compete with everyday communication apps, while sacrificing the thing that made it most useful: reliable video calling. “They did a redesign of the app and tried to make it a bit more sexy, young and fresh to compete with the WhatsApps and Telegrams of the world,” says Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Creative Strategies. However, by integrating a raft of new features – including “mojis”, Skype’s version of emojis, as well as various features borrowed from Snapchat, the developers lost their way and didn’t focus on the core functionality of making sure the video call quality remained. One much-maligned review of the app in June 2017 saw the average app store rating for Skype drop from 3.5 stars to 1.5 stars.

In response, Skype issued an apologetic blog post. “Sometimes when big companies develop products they just have a bit of feature creep,” explains Om Malik, partner at investment company True Ventures. “They just managed to muck it up all along.” Malik was a massive advocate of Skype until the redesign. “It was so terrible, that was the last time I used Skype. I just got fed up of trying to use that application. The whole thing got convoluted, the interface got worse, and the performance got terrible. It just lost the ease of use it used to have.”

Zoom is pretty good.... it has less features than Teams but it is way lighter and preferred for video calls, desktop sharing and remote assistence.
Skype today I only use for chat... working chat... I don't use it for personal.

Facebook and YouTube are the ones eating twitche's lunch (mainly Facebook I believe).

And everyone wants a credible alternative to these services, MS aren't going to provide anything else than more of the same issues... Let's not forget how Discord already started purging groups who don't align exactly to their world view.

We have both where i work
zoom use less memory for sure but teams use no cpu when i do nothing unlike yours.
Also teams is an electron app.Advantages of it come with other costs.

It is because I'm receiving messages when I'm doing nothing... there are tons of notifications too... and it is not just small messagens... it is wall texts together with images and stuffs.
So even in backgound without my use it is using the CPU.... I probably got a peak CPU usage in my picture because I never saw it cross 50%.

So it's not doing nothing...

I'm not using it.
There is no way I can stop it to receive messages lol (it is part of the business).
C'mon it was created to do that.

I pointed in the previous posts that maybe you guys are not using the Teams across your organization and just for video calls when needed... I have 4 organizations (4 different companies) and several teams signed in Teams.
That is why it is called Teams.

I'm using it on iPhone as workaround that is fine.

Hahahaha. And people thought MS were done spending. People said they couldn’t afford to spend any more! Told ya they had plenty of lettuce. $2.5b more than Zenimax and it ain’t even a game publisher/studio.

meanwhile Sony bought Evo….lol. Sony getting another showing up.
Lol at people bragging about a company money, dude you aint gonna get a dime son

It is too slow even in high-end PCs... it make my work slower because it always frooze to make anything (I end it when I don't need to use and my PC become so fast) and my development tools get slowed because the Teams is using too much memory and CPU.
It is confusion... I'm signed to different organizations and the way it works is a pain.

Voice and video is good when it works.... most of time I have to try again because it fails to enters in video conference rooms... the remote desktop feature is lagged.

I mean it is the complete opposite of the simplicity of the Skype Business... here at work when Teams start to be an issue I ask people to change to Skype or Zoom (Zoom is very very good for video conference and remote desktop sharing).

It is the default App in the company I work.

Yeap... I know and Skype Business was vastly superior to Teams.
Teams is counter-productive and Skype Business not.

Already tried to use a Virtual Machine with Teams opened?

That's a bit surprising to me. We use Teams every day in our software development team, it always runs in the background on our PCs, and every morning for our morning meetings via vpn, and our 4000+ employee-sized business uses it for company wide meetings and all-hands-on monthly, can't remember even a single time it had a hiccup.

Never heard of discord.
I'd rather it stay that way. I very much like it with people having their own space to chat and have fun. MMO raiding discords are well organized too.

Oh well there's always a bigger fish. If it gets assimilated by a whale I'll go find another clam to crawl into. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Chat with a shitty interface. At least when I tried it. Perfect example of how a fool can be parted with his money.
Whose the fool here in this sentence? lol

It has ~150 million active users and estimated 9 figure revenue.

That combo makes it incredibly attractive for a company that can integrate other services into it. Amazon and Microsoft probably being the most interested.

Even something as simple as GamePass being buyable via Discord would be massive for MS. Let alone further integration; Discord at one point attempted to run a game store.. and MS.. well..

Enough already. I mean it is DISCORD's to sell. Seriously though they're just scooping things up and you have to wonder if they've actually got a plan for this or - as someone alluded above - if it is just another data source to add to their trove and mine further advertising insights from.

I wonder if the recent name change of XBox live to Xbox Network is a clue to whats slowly changing behind the scenes for the platform. If any company could integrate discord into an OS it;s Microsoft. Now having it not get fucked by them like Skype is a whole different story.

But I can't stand xbox live party chat on PC it blows. SO I use discord exclusively.

MS's ad business isn't that important to them. Nobody spends $10 billion to scrub some data from chats lol

Discord has 150 million monthly users, a huge chunk of them gamers using the service to stream games, socialize about games, use voice chat features while gaming...

It's not really a mystery what "plan" MS would have w/ it..

My plan was better and for it to be the community/chat product integrated everywhere to gather us all

I use advertising and user-data interchangeably; and we're not talking about "some data" here. If anything, the past year has demonstrated that Discord conversations go well beyond min-maxing Path of Exile builds.

Infrastructure and data harvesting for advertising.

Microsoft outsource most of their advertising to Verizon, that's how little they care.

I think this would be a good move for Microsoft to protect their online communications businesses but they should really pay around 20 billion to hype it up to the maximum.

As an xbox gamer I don't see the point?

How on earth is discord even worth this much. Double that of Marvel, double that or star wars, and more than bathesda?!

I personally think the money would be better spent on another studio. But then I'm probably not seeing something MS see as I'm just a regular pleb. They must be see it as a good investment to make some decent profit out of it.

DAMN there is so much hate in here lol...just calm down everyone, Sony will eventually maybe acquire something maybe, one day, something meaningful.

Really? I think Jim Ryan is happy enough with his 80 euro games and putting exclusives on PC, while closing down everything he possibly can to make it seem like he made big money's!!!

Jim Ryan, big money's!

Next: 'What's this Naughty Dog thing? It's costing a lot of money.... close it down!'

There is Guilded if looking for a discord clone.

Discord is kind of like Twitch (& deeply intertwined with it unofficially) once you capture the user base they are unlikely to leave unless you can split it at a generational level so young people move away from discord.

I'm not a fan of discord but another megacorp owning another social network is not great.
