It’s almost like Sony doesn’t give a fuck about what the insane Gaf fanatical jingos think/say and all their devotion through console warring and personal attacks on users are all in vain and it’s really just a bigger part of their obsessive unhealthy personality that they should take time to recognize and fix.

I am not a fan of some of what Jim Ryan has done but this generation will be fine. I do have some concerns about the next generation if he continues to undo what has made the PS brand strong.

If it ain’t broken isn’t a good strategy. You have to be forward thinking.
They haven't shown a great amount of strategy or forward thinking, their only moves have been to consolidate and push for more premium AAA development when all signs are pointing to it being unsustainable and unnecessarily risky, they have shuttered iconic studios and Japanese game development at a time when tastes were turning back toward japan and cultural cache was rising. They have been caught sleeping in their response to gamepass, denying only a year ago that it would be sustainable and instead bumping the cost of their games at a time when disposable income is harder to come by. They have failed to leverage their history which is their largest advantage over Microsoft. Recent news of them shutting down stores, harming the perception of digital ownership while trying to go digital, this is all short sighted, short term, profit seeking moves that all these copy paste clueless suits make.

This idea is probably being discussed on other topics already but I want to focus here, because I had to put this out and record a prediction.

This man is putting Dom Mattrick to shame, remember him?
How can a person be so fucking wrong? The Playstation always strived and blossomed by it's variety, the mix of East and West, combining Nintendo and Microsoft strengths. But then the PS4 happens, it's a huge success, the western studios shine and this imbecile thinks, "oh, this is our strong point, lets put all our chips in this!" and goes off killing everything else. What he is doing with Sony Japan is a capital sin, the focus on big AAA "western-style" games is a mistake, no one can "survive" playing just games like that. And now destroying the online store... instead of taking advantage of the celebrated Playstation catalog and making a lot of money at least to compensate from getting rid of the eastern studios, no, he wants to erase that past! Is he insane?! How can anyone even think about that? It's his answer to the backwards compatibility? Getting rid of the older games?

The way I'm seeing things going I'm willing to bet that this generation will become one of the biggest and most spectacular downfall stories of our time.
Nintendo's momentum will not stop, Microsoft can only grow and they are actually putting the effort to make this happen.
Sony is doing nothing besides trying to kill itself.

For a "sony fanboy" like me will be sad to see, but it'll be deserved.

Mate, my advice is you just close the forums for a bit and go play some games.

Sony will struggle, I was iffy about the Xbox PC integration but now that the long game is starting to unfold I can see where Xbox game pass, Azure server farms, Xcloud, OneDrive and Office 365 are all starting to come together.

Satella Nadella is a visionary and has completely changed Microsoft from the company that 10 years ago was almost destroyed by Balmer. The stock price reflects this.
Yeah he turned them into Google. Enjoy your data brokers. Windows 10 is as bad as Android.

I don’t get it Microsoft is finally smartening up and becoming more competitive and not fucking around this gen and people are like Jim Ryan must be fired? I see people mad about Microsoft scooping up MLB on gp but seriously how many ppl actually played that game when it was exclusive to Playstation? Clearly not enough of you guys for it to stay exclusive. Is playstation still not selling the most consoles right now? Some of you are over exaggerating with this shit I believe we are in some good times for gaming I’m happy Microsoft is showing up this gen it will make Sony not be so comfortable like they were last gen and will get some great games out of both companies.

Well that's the thing; he's not making these decisions for fanboys. You guys make up, like, 3% of the fanbase...at best. Even among the hardcore fanboys are an extremely small amount.

I'm kind of sad that Japan Studio is shut down but there's still the chance Sony gets new versions of Hot Shot Golf, Parappa, etc. developed by partnering with other developers. Like imagine an UmJammer crossover with Street Fighter or KOF characters made with Capcom or SNK, they can still do that type of stuff. So those IPs aren't completely dead (yet).

It's a little too early to say that he's "damaging" the brand; they put him in charge to increase profits and he's doing exactly that. That being said tho no matter what it's going to be much harder for Sony to argue their value proposition this gen with a strong Nintendo and resurgent Microsoft, but that would've been the case even if they weren't doing the things you feel they are making mistake with.

MLB the show! Do not go to the thread! It was funny but now is scary!
Oh, brother lol

between the “Sony is doomed” and “gamepass is the best thing since the invention of the wheel”

logic does not exist there anymore!
Man I'm positive I've seen at least 4 threads between page 1 & 2 that were more or less those same topics, or some variation of those topics. Had me going like, just what is going on here?

We have the dominate console.
It's selling like hotcakes so much, they can't get enough into the shops.
Lots of incredible games coming from internal studios.

MS says they are going to support 'classic' games more (latest PR campaign), and Sony closes the PS3 digital storefront.

Reminds me of the fall of the Song.

Where the Prime Minister dragged the young boy (last Emperor of the Song) to his death into the sea and thousands of royal court/retainers followed suit rather than be ruled by the barbarians.

We have lost the Mandate of Heaven!

What is this "we" ? Bruh unless you're on the sony board then you shouldn't be talking crazy like that.. sony doesn't give a fuck about your fanboy opinion and that goes for any company they're in it to make money and simple as that, it just happens that you're loyal to Playstation and that's fine but you got the ps goggles stuck on your head to tight.

sad for this guy...he has to be the face of playstation right now and take all the hate for every negative story regardless of what he had to do with it.

First impressions matter... Better cut him off while he just seems like a small issue.
If that's how things should be done, then Sony should've fired Shuhei Yoshida more than a decade ago after he killed Eight Days and Getaway while downsizing London Studio, and especially after the treatment he gave to Demon's Souls by deciding not to publish it in the West.

Yeah, those were some of the first decisions your beloved Shuhei made when appointed as head of Worldwide Studios.

Yeah heavy marketing concealed as “Personal opinion“ then people wonder how could the cyberpunk fiasco happened!
Should we been discussing that? Yes but people are busy having meltdowns about everything but the problem!

the problem is not gamepass, it is the tactic used to make people talk about it.

This has gotta be in the runner up for most disingenuous comment of the year. I think I can hardly stumble on a topic in the front page that does not go on a tirade about this buffoon… but then again, we do not need 300,000 threads on him or God’s messiah on Earth Spencer Phil :p.

lol i always find these comments funny because you are criticizing fans for criticizing their favorite company.

You would rather have mindless drones, blind fanboys who would swallow any company line these suits give out. You know actual fanboys who dare not criticize their platform of choice.

That's absolutely hysterical.

Sony's revenue last year $25 billion was higher than both Nintendo and Microsoft combined. $11 and $12 billion.

Whatever they did in the ps4 era clearly worked so not sure why he's going around changing stuff.

If it ain't broken...
So I was looking this up to see if you separated out Sony's gaming sector from their overall revenue (keeping in mind, revenue means very little, it's net profits and gains that matter). Their fiscal year just ended so we don't have full 2020 figures yet, but going on 2019 they made a total of 77 billion dollars in revenue. They generated 20.84 billion of that from their gaming sector (the biggest sector in the whole company, revenue wise). 12 billion was from PSN subs.

The entire company overall, however, only profited 5.4 billion. So of that 77 billion in revenue, 71.6 billion was operating costs. That's a 7% profit rate.

Nintendo's net income for 2019 was roughly 1.8 billion. With 11 billion in total revenue. That means Nintendo's operating costs is 9.2 billion (that year). That's a 16% net profit rate.

Microsoft's net revenue for 2019 was 125 billion, with a net income of 43 billion dollars. They have 50 billion (as of 2019) in pure cash they can spend at any point. They paid out 30 billion in pure dividends (profits) to share holders. The gaming segment according to their report was about 10 billion in revenue that year. With a stated net profit of 18%. So microsoft has an insane overall profit margin, but for gaming it's actually an industry best percent. This is before all their acquisitions finalized, which most of them did in 2020.

Sony has virtually zero cash on hand due to outstanding debts. Microsoft is one of the richest cash on hand companies in the entire world. Nintendo has the most cash on hand of any company in Japan at almost 10 billion.

As for Nintendo - you never know with them. They could go third party. They could have the first 200 million selling system. Nobody knows what the hell they are doing.

So what do we learn? Sony is heavily reliant on their services to make gaming profitable. A bit ironic, considering how hard Microsoft is pushing service based gaming moving forward.

But also, we learn that just because they have a lot of revenue doesn't actually mean Sony is making that much money. Those gaming figures are more revenue than Xbox + Nintendo combined in the gaming sector, but the profit margins are not. So when you say "if it ain't broke"- you are right. It's profitable. But with so much revenue coming off PSN, imagine what could happen if they actually focused squarely on service based gaming? It appears Sony is choosing to leave a lot of money on the table.

As for the overall topic on Jim Ryan, I find it to be interesting. So, PS5 is really the first system we can point at as "this is on you" and it's selling out. I think what has happened is, Jim Ryan isn't interested in having a foundational relationship with gamers. Instead, he just wants to make the most amount of money possible. Almost... EA like in a sense. People can hate on EA and their CEO, but there is no doubt they still churn out some really good games at times and that company knows how to shit money for breakfast. Jim Ryan is running their gaming side of things in a similar way.

Phil Spencer has a different approach and I think people tend to give him more credit because frankly, he's coming from a dark spot. Jim Ryan took over basically when Sony was busy being awesome still. And now people are worried in how he talks and what he says and promises he breaks potentially hurting the brand long haul. Anyone remember him promising PS5 would take care of their retro fans and be back compat with all systems? How PS5 games would be exclusive right away and then he went back on both? It can erode consumer trust one day if that keeps happening.

When Phil Spencer took over, the difference was that Mattrick had lead Xbox almost into extinction. There was so much work to do and Phil Spencer sounded ambitious with what he wanted to get done. Sure, a lot of fluff came out and never happened, but his overall vision seems to have only gotten stronger. He said he wanted to fix the exclusive problem. You can't do that overnight - but look at all the acquisitions the last few years, topping off with Zenimax? That's pretty bold and Mattrick would have never thought of it, nor convinced microsoft, to invest so much. Phil Spencer also said he wanted to find a way to make gaming cheaper and more approachable by a wider audience - say what you want about loving or hating Game Pass and Xcloud, but those are things that accomplish just that.

Yes, we can also point out that he said Halo Infinite would for sure be a launch game and then instead got delayed and Xbox Series X to this day lacks an exclusive game (and I want to be clear - I don't think Sony should get much credit either. The pack in game is the only real exclusive on PS5 atm. That remaster/remake is technically an old game brought back to life. It's impressive, but technically it's still an old game reborn. That base game is available elsewhere). Neither system had massive launch exclusives tbh.

But, they both successfully launched systems during a pandemic that continue to sell out as bigger and bigger games are starting to come that people might care about playing next-gen (or really, current gen) versions of. He has worked hard to make Game Pass valuable.

Phil Spencer started from a position of weakness and in 2021, has Microsoft's gaming division looking up. Jim Ryan started from a position of stength and honestly, sony is STILL strong. For now. But some of the way Jim Ryan words things rubs people the wrong way. So there is a fear that not only is microsoft starting to look better and better, but Jim Ryan is eroding a little of the luster of the PlayStation brand. In the end, I think PS brand is too big to fail anytime soon. But in a decade? Who knows what happens. It's possible Game Pass and Xcloud take over the world of gaming.

They can't relate because they unabashedly worshiped Phil Spencer after he continuously released mediocre game after mediocre game while always promising "next year" would be the year.

I saw someone say that Sony fans are "lacking loyalty" in the other thread. It's mind boggling.

All executives are the same.

Anyone remember Phil Spencer promising 'High Fidelity VR' or our 'Best E3 Ever'
While whatever deal they had for VR fell through (there were rumors of things back in those days, but other companies offered more $), Best E3 Ever is just marketing fluff. How many times has Reggie acted like every single year of Nintendo was the greatest year in Nintendo history and all they had was mario party and a new fire emblem game on 3DS. :p

Phil Spencer knows that while his title doesn't say marketing, that he is always the chief marketing person for their gaming division. He's always going to pretend that everything they do "is the best". Hard to really hold it against him. Now if all the work he has done and all these acquisitions and game pass and xcloud is all irrelevant in 5 years and all the companies were ran into the ground - okay, Phil failed hard. But I think most of us can see that all the work he done looks like it's going to finally pay off. Keeping in mind the mess that Xbox One was.

Also while game pass needs to get fixed on PC still, it's nice seeing Microsoft care about PC gaming again. People forget, but Phil runs that too. Flight Simulator is simply put - the best there ever was for that genre. Age of Empires is coming back (and all the old games got remastered).
