No , the point is that Sony cannot afford to slowdown Playstation, cause it supports the electronics problematic divisions. On the contrary Microsoft will be able to support the XBOX even at loss cause they make a great deal of money elsewhere. That's why Jim Ryan does what he does. That's the point.

I really don't follow your logic.

Microsoft buying lots of things then pulling out after subsidising for too long is a common theme, look at their mobile phones. from wiki.

If gamepass does not work out....they will not subisidise forever.
No company would sustain something that does not work indefinitely.

How is this possible? So who gets a cut of the XBL membership etc etc

Sounds delusional.
They’re willing to use loss leader and whatever other cost eating strategy to gain market share. It’s a last ditch effort that, when backed by Msoft $, allows the Xbox division to punch above its weight. It’s not exactly shrewd...It’s just the way it is. Apple or Amazon or google could do the same thing if they wanted. There’s no salary cap in this sport so it’s fair game.
look at those Switch sales in Japan, no wonder Microsoft want to strike a deal
they already hitched their wagon to pc...might as well.

I understand. The only thing is, the profitability of gold. It’s pretty much all profit. That’s why their attempt to double it was timed where it was. It’s funny because, if Microsoft tried that price raise now, they’d get away with it because the perception has changed based on the “bad news” against Sony. But gold offsets some of their loss leader tactics. Makes it a bit more palatable but they’re stil spending money because they can and at this point, they have to.

Jim Ryan is hated because SONY wants him to make money. Cause , no one else does.
tvs : loss
Mobile: enormous loss,
Pictures: Covid Related Loss

The survival of the company depends on Playstation. Xbox can afford to sustain loss, cause they have a cash cow to milk. Sony doesn't. The problem with Jim is that he doesn't sell it very well.

I know you're not this dense, so I'll ask... how do charts showing decreasing sales prove these divisions are loss-making?

There is a factor that is called accumulated loss. If you lose money for 5 years , then coming end of fiscal of each year, this loss should be addressed either by capital injection by investors or by loans. A business is considered viable if reported earnings can cover this accumulated loss in order to pay the loans or return the capital investment previously mentioned. Sales figures show that what ever earnings are reported are insignificant to the losses sustained. Sony may choose to pursuit this activities , but sooner or later they cannot be sustained .

Sony playing the same game as Microsoft by only giving numbers of their divisions and adding bad-performing numbers to those divisions is not a measure of them being healthy. The truth is that smartphone sales were down in 3 of the 4 quarters of the last year, movies division was also down, as expected due to Covid, and their imaging division was also down YoY on sales numbers.

It's true that revenue has been mostly flat on those divisions but let's hope they can turn those sales numbers up

Mobile sales were down, but there wasn't a single loss in any segment as Vagos implied strictly

Schrier is as legit as you get. His track record speaks for himself. The internet, especially the anti woke crowd here on gaf has a hate boner for him, but when he does these exposes, he's always been on the mark. He called the cyberpunk development fiasco months before it launched. IIRC, he had devs saying that the game was literally a year away from being finished and now we know that to be true.

He was right about Anthem. He was right about Andromeda. And most importantly, he called the last of us 2 development issues months in advance. He even had people telling him that the new cast of characters (who we now know to be Abby and her awful crew) were not testing well with focus testers. I mean how we can we not trust what he says after getting such an integral thing right?

I dont agree with his stance on crunch culture. thats just true for all of entertainment companies. but when it comes to these behind the scenes scoops, he is not just the best but also literally the only one doing these articles. I find it funny that we bash journalists for sucking up to publishers and as soon as one guy decides to take them on and do an expose, we turn on him.
With any of these articles some of it is true other parts are pure conjecture. Since there isn’t other journalist covering the games industry , Schrier is all we got. Don’t know if that’s a good thing.

About time someone on here starts to discuss the REAL problem!

Who cares about Days Gone 2, Naughty Dog wasting developer talent and old JImbo's vision for Playstation!

Hot Take incoming. Sony will lose this generation if we don't get the following:

Knack 1+2 remaster at 120 FPS or

Knack 3 sequel using UNREAL ENGINE 5 and EXCLUSIVE TO PLAYSTATION

(EXCLUSIVE TO PLAYSTATION 5 OF COURSE NOT 4, wouldn't want to upset SlimySnake SlimySnake )

Well sony friends. All I can say is. What the fuck is going on at PS
The same thing that happened at the same time last year: MS trending positively and Sony silent. I really don't think they should break the silence but to announce another event where they'll show BOTH AA and AAA games, just like any other events so far, shutting a lot of doomers up.

Take this with a HUGE GRAIN OF SALT, this is coming from the head of gamesindustry.biz who says he's "talked to a few friends at Xbox Game Studios" and he says games like Everwild, Fable, and Perfect Dark are so far away that "there might even be a new Xbox console released by the time those games come out."

MS have released so many consoles in such a short time span Xbox fans shouldn't need to worry. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It’s either wait forever.. or do some lame episodic content. My bet is they continue to move away from AAA titles and make shorter “episodes” and things. The truth is, they HAVE to make or buy up studios to sustain this and actually turn a profit—or else you’re Netflix and constantly licensing things for a decade, as you slowly amass more properties. The real question is, how patient is Satya Nadella, and how long is he willing to bleed money to “hopefully” create a successful profit machine Phil sold him on...

I wouldnt worry too much about profits. When MS pays $7.5 billion cash outlay to buy Zenimax whose next key games are ES 6 and Starfield with who knows when launch dates (knowing Bethesda it'll be a while).

Everything MS has done lately is being more aggressive with Xbox, not scaling down. And Series X just launched.

Add it all up, and they aren't shutting down Xbox any time soon no matter if Xbox loses tons of money. Supposedly Xbox has been a drain on MS for 20 years, yet it's still here and more aggressive than ever.

If MS execs were that afraid of profits, they'd be scaling down operations, as opposed to coming out with another console and more acquisitions and services.

We should be getting more Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart news soon

🙏

They need to show stuff that will blow our socks off. As much as i liked the 2016 ratchet remake, it's just a standard shooter. They need to do more and i don't just mean add puzzles back into the game. More setpieces, more new uses of the ssd level skipping, more gameplay stuff you typically wouldnt see in a current gen game.

i hate to have so many expectations from a ratchet game, but its going to end up being the biggest AAA game from them this year if horizon gets delayed.

i mean we all called this the moment they revealed these games with cg trailers. if they had something, ANYTHING, they wouldve shown it. they didnt so they hired a cg company to make those trailers.

they havent exactly been dishonest about it either. i remember how Rare said they dont even know what kind of game everwild is lmao. and Forza was announced as a game in EARLY PRE-production. not just pre-production which would already put it like 2-3 years away, but early pre-production. like how far away is that game really? what have they been doing since 2017?

that said, i do hope to see them at their e3 conference this year. i dont care if all they have is an inengine trailer. i'll take anything next gen at this point.

And yet people on here would have you believe investing in a Series X would be a good investment just because of Gamepass and here is MS STILL with basically no new games....different year..same shit. Outside of Halo MAYBE coming out at the end of this year..maybe early 2022 what other Huge release is there after that? If Starfield is anywhere close to end of this year or first half of 2022 then you can bet its going to be on PS5 as well. No way they would be that far into development and just not have a PS5 version

Aside from Spidey MM which I think sold well on PS5, don't think all the other games sold that well (Godfall, Sackboy, Destruction All Stars was so bad they made it a PS+ game). Even Demon's Souls sales werent that great.

The problem is that his articles are slanted. Sure, there may be some "facts" present, but he tries to paint a narrative that may not actually exist.

Example: the situation he described at Sony seems completely normal and nothing out of the ordinary in AAA game development. At the end of the day is it any surprise they are doubling down on AAA development? Is there anything wrong with that? I am not exactly seeing a lack of lesser tier games either, like Returnal or Kena.

The situation with San Diego vs. Naughty Dog seems completely normal, as does the Bend Studio new IP stuff. Talking to a few ex-devs may also slant the true story, or he may even misinterpret the intent of what they are saying.

I hear you, but I also feel like this is a last attempt at it. It’s like they said, “here’s a blank check, this is your last chance.. you have have this generation..” By all accounts Xbox was going to be disbanded but Phil begged for one more chance. That’s even according to him in many interviews.. I just don’t think Microsoft will continue if they can’t make this last attempt stick. But who knows..

There is always a red line that cannot be crossed. For example mobile phones. MS tried for several years but as soon as China struck, they decided that was enough. LG did it , as well. Sony probably will do the same for some of the electronics as they did with monitors and laptops. In this case , game pass is part of a larger business strategy to transform to a subscription model, so I would predict they will pursuit it more intensely.

Depends on the price doesn't it?
I used to be a paying member of crunchyroll until I started having some issues with the vpn. I'm definitely not going to pay a monthly fee to only see a few of the anime available on the service. Yes, fuck geo-restrictions.
But if they bundle all in I probably would go for it, seeing I'm already paying for plus and ps now anyway.
If you are paying for plus and now, I assume yeah the marginal increase in cost just makes sense yeah. It's not the geo restrictions that I would slightly iffy about, it's the deals that they have with Netflix and others.

The real question is, how patient is Satya Nadella, and how long is he willing to bleed money to “hopefully” create a successful profit machine Phil sold him on...
Nadella know where the money is and it's from creating a platform to sell UGC (aka roblox) and taking a cut of mtx/DLC. I think he is patient, the question is are shareholders?

You hope it would be on PS5, I think it's a toss up if it ever comes out on PS5.

On the Forza bit, if they are looking for play testers, then you got to assume that they have a decent chunk of in-engine footage that they could use as a gameplay trailer, right?

Not convinced Sony will bundle movies and PS+ together - after all, why would they launch Bravia VOD service exclusive to their 2021 TV lineup then? Looks like they want to increase TV rather than PS sales with that move.

How Destruction was so bad when it was decided to be on PS+ before it came out?

Btw. regarding, Miles Morales, Demons Souls Remake and Sackboy, all of them are still in top 10 charts on US/Canada/Europe after 6 months. They are selling well.
