Resident Evil 8: Village |OT| Dat Atmosphere is THICC

Guess we literally see things differently. All subjective.

Seriously. It's blowing me away. We are living the RE dream. It's like how a young mind remembers how awesome RE 1 looked in full 3d. I love the graphics. And LMAO at Assassin's Creed being more impressive. I just played Valhalla on XSX, and it does not look better....at all. Worse for sure.

My man! The castle segment was so reminiscent of an alternate reality resi 1 in first person I couldn't suppress a subtle smile!

Btw, I used to rock the very same stringer lol <3

Na, as you can tell from my post above your post youre not. This, Hitman 3, and Disco Elysium best games i've played this year. But for sure this is not even close to "next gen" graphically, literally my only "negative" (in quotations cause idc it didn't lessen anything).
I think there are points that it looks on the level of demons souls - or even better in some respect. But it’ll be like one sequence or area - game has really unbalanced graphics imo - some stuff looks great and some looks straight up early PS4/late ps3. Either way I kinda recognized playing it that I actually don’t care and graphics really have become way less important over the years - the changes are smaller and more detail oriented. Every game has basically looked fine for like the past 10 years

IMO RE8 is a damn good looking game on PS5, but there are several games that look better (Hitman 3, Demons Souls, Returnal to name a few) Village at times looks a little washed up, especially outside, but its dripping in a fantastic atmosphere and some of the interiors are amazing, Castle Dimirescu and The Factory being my personal standouts and favorite areas tbh

Mods are getting better by the day

(It's Mr X + Lady D, in case you don't get it)

Looking forward to the Nemesis version

Under Heisenburg's Factory by the Merchant has a great view. But other than that it has definitely looked more like a Control, Days Gone, etc (ps4 to ps5 graphics upgrade) than Souls or Spidey, idk how its even a debate if you're on next gen tbh. Like those games are consistently showcasing the resources they put toward the graphical department and showing off next gen, while this game is one that at bare minimum always knew it would be dual gen release, and maybe weren't even sure on next gen plans when development started.

But yeah as you said, this is still an amazing game. I have it top 3 of the year personally, but i'm not about to act like this is THE next gen game graphically at the moment.

Finished it twice now and loving it, but I have a question about challenge points (CP),

I thought that it worked like the "Tales of" games and that you get your CP back after the end of a run, so I spend a lot of my CP on useless stuff like infinit ammo on the LEMI pistol and the first shotgun which are basically useless now. Is there a way to reset CP or start over with 0 cp so I can save it for something better like the magnum.
It seems like CP is account bound and not on that save.

Thanks in advance.

yeah nah, the unlock system here is set in stone. you get exactly enough CP to unlock everything, it's just on you to prioritize the stuff you want first. I don't think there is any way to reset it

Interesting tidbit I just learned, but Daniela Dimitrescu is voiced by the same actress as Jill Valentine in RE3R. Some are even saying her face is the same as Jill's, but I don't think so. Daniela's face seems slightly different.

Anyway, like clockwork, in the hundreds of spicy skin mods you can do in RE3R, someone made Daniela playable:

Finished it just now and it was very enjoyable. It has many different flavors of Resident Evil. Except for fixed camera and tank controls because those things are shit.
It took me 9 hours to beat it. Missed a few treasures.

Oh it’s definitely not the next gen game - I’d say even returnal has more of a next gen feel ultimately due to the particle effects - but the game can look good. Def my fave game of the year so far regardless

I must be the only one that doesn't think RE:Village looks all that good graphically. I think it's the lighting. It looks okay indoors sometimes but outside it completely falls apart and looks video-gamey. The snow and the trees and grass do not look realistic at all. Sometimes the rocks and steps look okay, but everything else just looks flat with bad lighting. RT also barely changes anything about the game. Reflections are super low res and the global illumination seems to be more like certain things look a tiny bit more grounded, but it's not transformative like it is in Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition.
So aesthetically the game is amazing, design, colors, light mood etc. They even do some form of Raytraced GI, reflections and AO which looks great, it's a bit sublet but very noticeable when you toggle it on and off in many locations. BUT there are a lot of lights that doesn't cast shadows, many surfaces thus receive light and specular shine from light sources that are occluded. This is probably the number one reason it looks video gamey. But I can take that compromise, I much preferer a good looking game at a solid 60 fps than one with more accurate lighting.

One more thing to nitpick on is that there are numerous textures with too low resolution. This might be a VRAM compromise for consoles but it not really stressing my 24GB RTX card at all, I still have around 10GB to spare with everything maxed out.

Not the best example but still. This is the game (on PC) with no HDR vs. HDR. Ignore the corner glow, blurriness and whatnot. You don't see it in person. The point being, HDR and Ray tracing are amazing and completely change the game.

This is one of the better HDR implementations I’ve experienced, personally. As long as everything is properly calibrated.

edit: sorry for double post
While the game looks great in HDR. The max nits settings (white square) doesn't do anything on PC. You can't adjust the white clipping point and tonemapping at all. There are numerous lights and flames that are blown out, normally if you adjust the clipping point you should be able to retrieve the previously crushed details but this is NOT possible on PC in the menu settings. Crapcom have basically locked the games white clipping point which is not ideal when you have a display capable of 1700+ nits.

Also, Alt+Tab ing will turn off the HDR permanently, only way to reenable it is to save the game and go back to the start screen, only there is it possible to turn it back on again. This is such an armature bug it unbelievable. You can't tab out to check on something in the browser etc without having to reload the game. This has not ben a problem at all in any of the earler RE Engine games. This makes me really annoyed.

So am I supposed to fight the first enemies in the castle basement on hardcore? Because i used 50 pistol rounds and 4 shotgun and was using a knife at the end. That seams like no fun ahead.

I did it, but is that the game taxing my ammo or am I just not going to have fun ever? Beat 7 on normal this weekend and it was a bit of a breeze, but it still felt RE to me.

If normal isnt easier than 7, i will stick to that.

Buy the infinite ammo upgrade.

I think RE8 arguably looks better than all of these.

The textures are very high quality like Demons Souls, but it runs mostly at a much higher resolution (near 4K native), AND with Ray Tracing. Beautiful HDR lighting too.

It's one of the most next-gen looking titles easily.

it's literally 50% of native 4K tho... so no "near 4K native"

and no it's not really next gen looking. it looks better than the One X version, but not by much. the RT implementation, while preferable to screenspace AO and reflection solutions, is nothing to write home about either.

the best you can say about it is that it's a 60fps version of a 2160cb One X game, that has low quality RT effects added to it.

It's higher than Demons Souls at 1440P.

And yeah, the textures are very high quality like Demons Souls. It's using Quixel megascan textures. The interiors, lighting, and effects (like the bees, etc) inside the castle look insane.

At the very least it's comparable to the best games right now (Demons Souls, Spiderman, Returnal). Ratchet takes the crown in a month though.

Its really not though. Did people forget what Miles Morales looks like?

The House Beneviento basement is hands down the single most horrifying thing I've ever experienced in any game. You know the bit.

Welp. I just beat Resident Evil 7 for the first time and I was craving a little more (minus the dumb ending) along with I don't have much to play until next month (Ratchet and Clank), so despite NOT liking the demos of this game, FOMO kicked in and my gameshare partner and I split the cost for this. Hopefully, we are not disappointed.

I really need to get off social media when big games release. It's like a virus

I'm just watching a youtube but just over an hour of the way in the main characters hands are so mangled he shouldn't be able to do much anything with them anymore. Compelling story other than the fact that all these other humans die normally but main character getting mangled, hammered, bleeding constantly and he's just up and back at it?

Doesn't even seem like survival horror, none of what's happened to the main character would be survivable, cool as a movie as long as you go with the reality the main character dies multiple times but keeps going

That’s actually explained in the story, but I dare not say any more.

Try playing the game instead of sitting on youtube trying to judge it through videos.

So I have 3/4 masks to make help me progress through the castle and I am enjoying my time with the game so far. I don't think though that so far at least, the story is as interesting as it was in RE7. We will see how that progresses though (even though I already know how the game ends lol I spoiled myself. I am at least hoping future enemies have more interesting stories behind them than what I have experienced with the 3 smaller vampires. Lady D is somewhat intriguing reading through the notes and stuff).

Beat the Dollhouse earlier today. Holy shit I was going to have an anxiety attack for the entire section. So tense and it had those long 90 degree hallways which always make me nervous. Reminded me of the PT demo a bit.

The baby monster didn't really do anything for me, but it was all the build up to that point. Boss 'fight' was a bit anti climactic after the basement section but still good and I'm ready to move on to the next area!

Checked my playtime and I'm at 8 hours lol. A lot of my time has been wasted walking around aimlessly looking for something to progress the game. I got stuck in the Village after beating Lady D because I didn't know where I was supposed to go :(

The scariness is more up and down than 7 was imo. I think the developers actually said they were going for something to that effect. 7 was like a consistent 8-9 on the shit your pants scale for me, whereas this is like 5 in parts, 8 in parts and then THAT section is like fucking 200. That particular part is the most harrowing thing in any Resi game, in fact i'm struggling to find a more fucked up moment in any horror game right now. It is really, really, REALLY fucking bad especially if youre doing the full play in the dark with headphones thing.

I was playing alone in my house at 3AM with lights off and headphones on. Fucking shat my pants the first time that thing came. The sound, the imagery, the atmosphere.....perfect! Never had a game cause tingling in my feet before.
But I am definitely glad the whole game isnt like that. I was never able to play RE7 much because of constant scares. I like my games to have like good atmosphere but only ratchet up the 'shit your pants' stuff few times. This is a good mix of action and some horror elements.

Wow , I watched a little playthrough of someone playing the game on Villiage of Shadows level difficulty. Holy shit the enemies are INSANELY fast and twitchy and the amount of damage they take is also insane.

Looks like a true survival horror on that difficulty. Any gaffers give a this a try yet ? I will have to beat it on hardcore at least twice before I try it.
Looks do-able , but appears you will need to run away from at least half the enemies if you want enough ammo for the boss battles. But wow do the enemies move fast , especially the Lycans.
Hardcore is already pretty insane at the beginning...12 headshot to kill a simple goon?!

I had to kill enemies with my knife because i was out of bullet more than once, and those fucking lycans are too twitchy and the aim\movement system too shitty to keep up with them.

No you are not the only one, the game is very uneven imo.

People love to take pics of some room of the castle but they suspiciously avoid taking pics from all the parts with shitty low res textures.

It's a crossgen game after all, they can't do miracles.

The problem is that demons also has a majority of high res texture for the outdoor locations too, re8 seems like 2 different games when you compare some rooms of the castle with some places full of low res rextures.

And if can ignore some low res textures while playing demons in third person, it's far too hard to ignore low res texture when you play re8 with first person camera when they are in your face all the time.

So no, the quality of the textures between re8 and demons is not the same, and i not even one of those sony fans who think that demons looks unbelievable tbh.

P.s. i'm playing re8 on pc with max details, just for the record.
