Predicting Microsoft's next acquisition

Nah it needs to be Embracer, then they would be single player king....

I want them to produce games first, so they prove that they can manage the studios. Wasteland 3 was fucking awesome so fingers crossed.

Sorry to break it to you but Microsoft's “war chest” is firmly targeted at other sectors. I would be shocked if they did another Zenimax level gaming acquisition.

Microsoft is currently flying under the radar a little with antitrust enforcement paying more attention to Apple, Google and Amazon right now and are looking at targets in sectors where normally they’d come under more scrutiny than gaming. MS can make a gaming acquisition any time, as they’re not the dominant company.

They just spent $19 billion on Nuance, a health AI company, and have been looking at Discord, Pinterest and, of course, Tiktok. This is more like their other recent big acquisitions like LinkedIn and Githhub.

Microsoft seems to be acquiring a lot of studios lately and doesn't seem to be stopping soon. I predict Microsoft will buy out either Valve/Steam or Studio Wildcard next.

Why do you guys cheerlead for studio acquisitions?

Buying up studios for the sole purpose of reducing content available on the competitor's platform is a garbage strategy and borderline anti-consumer. When the content would come to your platform regardless of the purchase or not, you're not actually adding anything to the gaming medium, but instead tying up investment dollars in forcing multiplatform content to become exclusive, instead of using those funds to expand your existing studios or create new studios or bring up smaller indie devs to make new blockbuster games.

You should be protesting against this shit, instead of fantasising over it.

Will be fun to look back at this thread.

I predict Microsoft will acquire a publisher/studio that is very close to their main competitor, leading some fans to petition the removal of Jim Ryan and Herman Hulst.

Not all purchases are bad Brian fargo would of retired after Wasteland 3 if Microsoft had not acquired his studio. He got sick of spending most of his time raising money and worrying about payroll. He can now spend his time creating games which he loves. More western rpgs which is a win for all gamers. Until the zenimax deal most of the studios Microsoft purchased had financial issues.

The buyout also means that inXile will no longer crowdfund its projects, despite Fargo being on the Fig advisory board, and his plan to retire after Wasteland 3 is out the window, too. "That's off the table. I'm not going anywhere," he said. "You're stuck with me."

"At least 50% of my time is in fundraising and we have so little room for error. It generally takes a mega hit to break you out of the cycle and that is always hard to come by. A mid-size hit is nice, but the after-tax monies from that generally support another five to six months of payroll and leave you back on the hamster wheel.

Fargo concludes: "Spending 100 per cent of our energy making games with the resources we only dreamed of in the past. It's the holy grail for an ambitious developer."

If you expect them to acquire Valve, how on earth do you get dressed every morning? A personal assistant or an intricate system of pulleys and levers?
The company is privately owned and every morning Steam lays a pile of golden eggs. Why would they sell or even go public in such a position.

I can see Microsoft buying Sony electronics entertainment and PlayStation brand. Bricking the consoles worldwide And then mothball the brand effectively erasing its existence.
Then in forty years most people will be like, “whats playstation? Was that like gamepass??”

MS will buy Sony, then Apple will buy Nintendo. Then Amazon will buy MS, and then the Great War will happen between Apple and Amazon. Tencent will win in the end, it will be circa 2077.
