Embarrassing for Sony. First the crossplay debacle, “we believe in generations”, price hikes and now this. For the players though.

The predictable defense force though is quite something, but unsurprising. Protect the corporation at all costs!

The SDF out in full force. It's not that indies deserve success or that Sony should prop every indie up on a pedestal and shower them in free advertising. It seems that it's a problem with the Account Managers and the processes at Sony that create large headaches for these smaller developers. Manual excel invoicing? Months to respond? Having to speak to the manager to get answers? No launch discounts or pub driven discounting? C'mon. They're valid complaints and there are corroborating developers/publishers talking about it.

How can you have any desire to publish on PS if that large user base isn't giving you any ROI?

And yet some here will say paying Sony for cross play is because it's a PRIVILEGE to have access to such a user base lmao. They can't even get the privilege of PS users buying the game in the first place.
This is completely fake outrage.

I think I've spent too long on this board when I can easily tell what someone's, likely disingenuous, take is going to be on a topic. And I am not just talking about the poster I am quoting here.

In this case the people most concerned about this seems

These devs don't seem that bright. I would never criticize Apple if my iOS App Store app was bombing. It's up to you to do your own marketing and outreach. I don't think sales distributions paint the whole picture either. What are the actual numbers of sales? Are they mad at Sony AND Steam? It's all childish.

One OTHER possible takeaway is that Sony and PC gamers are spoiled for choice and don't care about shovel ware, while Xbox and Nintendo only gamers are starving for content. I'm not saying that's what is happening, but it is very easy to come up with different interpretations for the data other than "Sony bad." I mean, seriously, come on.

There couldn't possibly be two sides to this story. Sony has some faults on getting games onto their platform I'm sure. But thinking every Indie game dev will be treated equally is foolish at best.

Some of it sounds valid to me. Specially in regard to obtuse systems and lack of feedback, I've had to deal with systems like that before and it sucks.
Like sales being invite only makes sense to me, but it sounds like they don't have clear guidelines for devs to know how to qualify (for example "sell at least X number of copies in the last Y number of months and have a user rating of at least Z")

A lot of other stuff sounds like entitled whining. It's your job to promote your product, Sony doesn't owe you free promotion just because you're an indie.

Besides, what does, for example, Nintendo do to promote games? I know they have their indie showcases but that doesn't come close to covering the tons of shovelware that gets released on the Eshop each week.

It’s been kind of obvious for awhile that Sony is really only concerned with high quality indie games and they don’t really care about building a platform for scrappy upstarts with good ideas.

Personally I don’t blame them, I was there when the App Store launched and saw lots of indies make some great titles, then the market got flooded with crap. Now you basically have to resort to buying Apple Arcade to get anything meaningful on iOS that isn’t F2P garbage. Let’s call a spade a spade, the Account Managers for Sony aren’t eager to help this guy because they have glanced at his work and aren’t impressed.

Maybe he should show Sony the piss jar under his desk like Johnathan Blow to show his dedication 🤔

Nintendo's store is a bit of a free-for-all. Devs can promote their games by putting them on sale every two months at massive discounts to try and game the top sellers charts.

I'm guessing Sony has one of the worst onboarding programs of any of the platform holders (Nintendo might rival them I guess) so those complaints are probably valid. It does sound like these developers have a major case of sour grapes. Their games seem to be middling at best and when platforms gets dozens of these a week, you aren't going to move product.

I'm talking about how you seem to need to track a person down to get things done, rather than submit things via some portal.. they also talked about how the sales data is shared in sending an excel file.

Those are the systems I'm talking about. Having to track down an account manager is just a process that doesn't really help anyone, Sony or the indies.

Yea, but I also wonder if this depends on regular submission of a discussed deal with Sony? I feel this process may be this way for games that you know are a drop in the bucket? If the process was more streamlined would more indies that are making generic stuff like this guy is promoting be flooded into the store? Because I feel these are in place for joe schmo submission to weed out generic stuff liek Black tiger?

I mean if Im wrong be nice to see a higher profile indie developer say something about the process if its easy and good. Because I remember tons of interviews with profile indies talking nothing but praise about PSN.

This is enlightening though: https://www.pushsquare.com/news/202...rates_how_bad_ps_store_discoverability_can_be

But it does seem like because of the sheer volume of developers available now that it makes it hard for indies to shine. Maybe a seperate store all together that links to PSN but is a seperate tab on your PS4/PS5 store icon on main home?

PS5's store is probably a little easier to find new releases as the redesign is fairly bare bones. Descenders is a really cool game btw.

I see.
Though I have to say, as a consumer I kinda prefer more controlled sales. I remember seeing games being basically permanently on the Eshop sales page.
Not only did it make it harder to find sales for good games. But IMO it pretty much amounts to fake advertising, because if your game is always on sale it's actually never on sale.

I despise 99% of indie games but Platform X sure does suck these days really not the place to be if you are doing something creative or interesting

but if you hate old games and remake said old games ayyyyy lmao

As a liker and fan of indies myself, I can't really side with them.

Quality of the indies I got recently are poor. Like, some don't even put effort on the music side(quite frankly, we reach a point devs are either becoming way too lazy on the music side or don't even care to begin with), while others have good ideas but terrible applications. Most of my recent indies I would grade something between 5~6, and thats because I'm being nice.

Not trying to be harsh or something, but you guys should try harder before trying to be the victins.

Well some of this stuff is just stupid.. "They only highlight your game for free if they like it"..

Uhhhhh lol

"They have a way to pay for marketing"

OK?

And "They certify your game on all of the consoles it releases on!"

Uhh.. yeah? lol

He also seems to be whining about some of the free marketing they do give out, like trailers on their channel.. and a blog post (if they like your game).. WTF?
Not arguing that some of the complaints are stupid or part and parcel of being a app within the app store. Just saying that he raised legitimate complaints and the way that he has raised it (via twitter) is probably the most efficient way to do so.

Plays nothing like Mario. You're saying the Assets looks like Mario? That's nearly every 2d platform game then...
Have you played the original SMB? This game, or at least that scene, is clearly at least an homage to the original.. hammer throwers and all lol

For sure, agreed.

He's a bit of a whiny cunt, who also has some good points.

Incoming poll: “are you still going to buy a PS5 or considering GamePass thanks to Id@Xbox?”. I like the pattern…

Sony is still spending energies to get great indies onboard, but sure not as much as late PS3 and early PS4 days sure.

Poor Yoshida has been thrown into the gutter. Andrew House no longer there :( Sony's new face is absolutely horrendous. I miss the Shawn Layden and Andrew House days and when Shu was leader of the Worldwide Studios. Garbage management. P.S. Fuck Jim Ryan, lying sack of shit.
Shu`s the one leading the indie department, if there`s a problem with indies having access to PS platform it would be his fault lmao.
