Eurogamer: Sony plans to potentially offer Crunchyroll as part of a more expensive premium PlayStation Plus offering

I don't think this will amount to anything meaningful.

I have been a long believer that Sony should capitalize on their media advantage, but not this way. Playstation console and playstation plus should only be about games.

$10/month with a good library of older movies and I'd probably go for it. Lots of stuff I haven't seen in a long time. Ninja scroll, paprika, street fighter 2, vampire hunter d. Lots more I can picture in my head just can't put a name to them. Also, no censoring.

Not for me but what if they’re adding it to PS Now instead? Healthy boost of subscription numbers. No hardware needed for anime fans, all of a sudden they have access to 800 games as well, and Sony have 120 million new PS Now users?

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
As a PS Owner, i dont really care about weebo shows, but who knows, maybe the subscription will be higher than I thought.

I like the idea of funimation and crunchyroll combining their libraries. Good for me as a consumer. If there’s a deal with PSNow or something I will almost certainly subscribe.
As an extra option for PS owners this seems like nothing but a win. TV on Xbox was a joke, but anime and games are like peanut butter and jelly, there’s a ton of overlap on both communities. This is a smart move by Sony. A steal at 1 billion.

Also to the people saying to watch anime for free online but in the next breath saying I hope these animators get paid… wow. Stop and think.
I like anime and paying for it helps the industry, additionally the quality and playback is much better then on free sites. If you’re watching something beautiful like Tower of God, Mob Psycho 100, or Wonder Egg Priority you want that experience at a good quality, not some grainy ass shit and keeps pausing on you.

Some of you are shallow minded AF.

Anime is on a huge upswing around the world thanks to streaming services like Netflix providing Anime on their streaming services to which, during the pandemic and the lockdowns that ensued around the world, helped surge the amount of eyes on the genre.

There's a reason why Demon Slayer movie was huge, and it was due to the perfect concoction of people bored at home and finding themselves watching anime for the first time during this period (among other anime's listed in the services).

Sony, a Japanese company at heart, bought Crunchyroll and wrapped it into a premium service for PSN+ is their move to capture that upswing in the amount of eyes on anime today, hoping to easily tap into that surge with providing a FUCKING HUGE amount of Anime shows/movies through their purchase of the streaming service into their console box.

It's like Netflix, but just anime, and purely exclusive to the console.

It may even help bring more Japanese customers into their PS5 audience numbers, but that is a harder assumption to make.

Whether it pays off is a question of time, but my money is that it definitely pays off in the long run as undoubtedly anime is getting more and more popular as it slowly becomes the equivalent as watching a Sunday morning cartoon and less questioned when someone watches it.

I think optional bundles like these ones (in case Eurogamer's guess is right, but Sony wasn't talking about combining Crunchyroll and PS Plus, they were talking about merging their anime subscriptions) are a good idea as long as you are able to continue getting the normal service separatedly, as seems it's going to be the case if this becomes real.

I think it would be great to merge all their Anime stuff into a single service, and if it also includes western animation, real action movies and tv shows even better. I'd have these options:

-PS Plus, PS Now and anime app services separatedly
-PS Plus + PS Now bundle
-PS Plus + anime app bundle
-PS Plus + PS Now + anime app bundle

But again, I think Eurogamer is wrong, Sony said this: "Our goal is to create a unified ANIME subscription experience as soon as possible." when talking about Funimation and Crunchyroll, they didn't see the ANIME word so assumed Sony was talking about Crunchyroll and PlayStation Plus instead.

It's a smart business move, but its not particularly good for PlayStation gamers. If the PS++ service has other gaming related additions that someone wants, will they have the option to cut out Crunchyroll from the cost of PS++ if they don't want Crunchyroll? Of course not - that's not how these subscriptions work, and it wouldn't achieve Sony's goal of using PlayStation to bolster Crunchyroll. In effect, if you want something game related that is included in PS++ then you have to pay for something non-game related to get it - and that's pretty shitty.
Looking at Sony's competitor, Microsoft offers Xbox Live, Gamepass for Console, Gamepass for PC, and Gamepass Ultimate (Xbox Live + console + PC + streaming) options of its services - all of which are 100% game related, with only Ultimate offering up "perks" that are non-game related. So, why should a PlayStation gamer pay for PS++ for the game related features and be forced to pay for Crunchyroll with no option to not have it included? Why not just offer a discounted Crunchyroll subscription for PS+ users separate from PlayStation entirely? I'd argue because it doesn't bolster Crunchyroll in the same way as forcing PlayStation gamers who might not want it to pay for it if they want PS++'s game related additions.

Bullshit.

First, Sony said this: "Our goal is to create a unified ANIME subscription experience as soon as possible." when talking about Funimation and Crunchyroll. Sony was talking about unifying anime subscriptions, not to unify anime and gaming subscriptions. Eurogamer didn't undertood it in the proper way.

Second, Eurogamer said 'There are also plans to potentially offer Crunchyroll as part of a more expensive premium PlayStation Plus offering, Eurogamer understands.' So it's just an Eurogamer's guess.

And it could be just keeping their PS Plus and anime sub separated but in addition to this to offer an optional bundle for those who are interested on both. It wouldn't force anything.

Why did you specially cut out the part of my post where I said the article could be bullshit and explaining that this purely speculation based on the assumption that the article is correct?

In a thread discussing and speculating about a news article, your post doesn’t really serve a point because your responding to my self-advertised speculation by basically saying “Bullshit - this is just speculation!”. Yeah - it is speculation. Your post addresses nothing I wrote.

I love manga but anime is so slow and cheap. With two frames of animation and a couple of mouth shapes they can arrange a 5 minutes scene. Later, they add an amazing combat scene that it's the thing anime fans share to deny how boring and narratively slow is anime.

I’m a gamer and I don’t like anime. Nor do my brothers nor do my cousins.

On a more serious note, these type of initiatives of trying to push another media on a gaming platform usually fail.

If it's optional then it's all good. I'm not a huge anime fan either, or at least I'm good with the anime (including most of the original Pokemon series) that comes with my Amazon Prime subscription.

It's so funny... people keep going with the false narrative about SonyGAF, yet here we are, in a thread about a SPECULATION regarding Sony, filled with the usual green tainted suspects....

Regarding the topic:
I think such an OPTIONAL higher tier subscription could work, especially in Japan. But depends highly on the pricing.

They are thinking about offering a service that caters to millions for a small additional monthly fee.

What part of this is hard to understand?
Maybe they should try to make their current gaming sub like PS Now more appealing in regards to games then shoehorn anime stuff there. That's my view as a gamer who does not care about anime,

It's a drive-by shitpost. He's known for doing that before he got banned. Now that he's back it looks like he's picked up old habits again.
I predict a very short stay for him this time around.
Report or place on ignore are your only options as he'll continue trolling PS threads.

There's a positive xbox thread somewhere that needs derailing.

Oh no. An NEW tier where the existing one remains unaffected? How could they do this!/s

Seriously, i dont get the complaints. Nobody's forcing you to take the higher tier. It might just be a viable option for people like me who have a crunchy sub and ps plus. Plus, this is just a rumour until officially confirmed.

That being said, I'd like them to roll PSNOW into the existing ps plus sub. That would be great

If they're not even willing to pay for the very thing that they use, why are they going to go pay for PS+?
Exactly the point though. If I'm not willing to pay CR the $7 currently, why am I expected to pay the extra when bundled with Plus? I'll only pay for Plus and continue getting CR for free with ads. I might even drop Plus altogether even. But add in CR premium without ads? I might think twice about dropping Plus and actually keep it. It might also entice people to get Plus. Yes they don't pay for CR anyway, but bundled with Plus? That means they're getting a lot more for the same Plus amount. That's the incentive. Use CR as bait to pay for Plus.

Since Sony owns CR now, they're paying their salaries anyway. It's all Sony's pocket now. And it's how they want to use that bait.

What do you think of this personally? Would you use this? Yeah the Japanese Market would be all over this, probably what Sony had in mind when buying it.

Depends on the price and the content. I like a few animes, but there are already a lot on Netflix, to which I'm already subscribed.

Edit: also, a lot of gaming based animes are or are going to be on Netflix, too. So currently, I'm more interested in Netflix for animes.

Anyone got a good idea/article about the number of anime on Netflix and how it compares to crunchyroll and funimation?
Hard to say since varies by country as significant portion of crunchy catalogue is not available outside of US

Hmm interesting maybe they do some upgrade promotion like microsoft do so we could stack on crunchy subscription for few years that way

The word "gamers" doesn't mean what you think it does today.

These days many different types of people play games, and a lot of these people, like myself, don't watch any anime.

Anime is still a pretty niche form of entertainment, while gaming has gone mainstream.
Thanks for the mansplation. Incorrect as it is.

Good move, I'll buy if they can do something about the stupid region restrictions. I think unifying Funimation and Crunchyroll will help with that.

It''s not for everyone, but it's for a lot of people.

There are only so many weebs out there, this will hardly make an impact. It’s not like Persona 5 or that other game with long title released recently sell in 10s of millions of copies.

While it makes sense to increase value proposition through other means, Sony execs need to understand that focusing too much on areas other than games for the PlayStation is a sure path to ruining it. This isn’t a new lesson for the industry either.

Just make more games, and if you don’t have the workforce, then buy it.

PlayStation is the only major brand Sony has left though so, odds are that they will fuck it up.
