---> as for free upgrade: sony did not say Horizon Forbidden West will get free upgrade. they said launch titles will ( ps5 launch games ) and HFW is not one of them.
---> as for the lack of upgrade path : HFW is different from any cross gen game . let's take Miles Morales for example. MM on ps5 is simply MM on ps4 but with ps5 features like higher frames and ray tracing. MM is built on ps4 hardware and enhanced for ps5. I own a PS4 and I'm a massive fan of this series and I'm letting it be known idgaf lol
I'll get it when I get a PS5, for PS5..... I'd rather wait to play it on a better system. If I really cared about just getting 1 copy and not buying a new one, I'd just play it thru BC and call it a day, I want the PS5 version, thus will wait to get a PS5 before buying the game in the first place....
No one is going to care that much to effect anything really.
Those that have a PS5 will buy it on that.
Those that have a PS4 and don't plan to upgrade will play it that way.
Those that have a PS4 and WANT a PS5, will just wait, save up, buy the games on sale later etc. I just don't see this as a massive issue.
BoTW had ZERO upgrade path, you eithe bought that game on WIi U or Switch, I don't recall any fucking melt down or people dying over that happening lol It moved millions, won many GOTY, life moved on. I don't even recall many giving a shit about Sony having an entire system for this literally for generations for many titles with Cross buy. So I don't even fucking buy that many even "care", where the fuck was that when they literally were giving free versions of titles thru out many, many systems like PS3, PSP, PS Vita? Oh but now this is news to die over when they want to charge? Maybe folks should have gave more shits about that those options back then instead of feeling like it was owed or normal etc

Well, Horizon was promised a free update, thi was the main issue. Secondary issue is now wasn't even an normal upgrade path. Wiiu and Switch are completely different system, you cannot put a wiiu disc into switch.

If you can buy a PS5 at this point in time then you can buy the cross-gen edition.
It‘s not a privilege to have the best fidelity gameplay for “free” the people in question would have to buy the game already at full price. It’s in Siny’s best interest to allow those people to play the game the optimal way with being charged for the “privilege”.

I think that part of the reason this seems so outrageous is because the PS5 very much feels like a deluxe PS4. It's not such a drastically different platform like Wii U to Switch. In fact the Switch version of BotW was totally ported from WiiU from the ground up. Whereas PS5 plays all PS4 software natively and in ways feels like updating your systems graphics card.
For a system that feels a lot like a PS4 Pro Plus, with such emphasis on cross-gen games and 100% backwards compatibility with PS4, and with MS automatically scaling a game to whatever hardware you own no questions asked, this seems nonsensical and archaic.
Now it would be nice (and I would buy a lot more) if Nintendo had some kind of cross-platform account system so I could buy a game once and be done with it. If they had that I would have bought the WiiU version of BOTW instead of holding out until I got a Switch when Odyssey dropped. But they have never had such a system AND BOTW was released on extremely different hardware, whereas Sony just released a direct upgrade to PS4 and have a system in place to do it easily -AND built expectations with their handling of other games.
Basically they are cherry picking their policy on a game by game basis, which toys with expectations and sets them up for backlash. I see this as short-term profit gain at a long-term expense that isn't really worth it, shortsighted IMO.

people are really using BOTW as a comparison you cant be serious BOTW on the Wiiu and switch is pretty much the same game in fact they both run almost identical to each other there is nothing taken or remove from either version of the game in fact you can play both of them in handheld mode as well one using the switch and one using the Wiiu in portable mode. The problem with horizon is that you are forced into buying the "upgrade version / added version" for full price there is no $10 upgrade path or just a free upgrade.

Good on em, everyone is acting like this isn't standard practice. Why would they give you two versions of a game because you can't buy the upgraded console? If you want to play it on ps5 and don't want to pay twice, don't buy it on the ps4 and wait. It really isn't rocket science. Gamers really are an entitled lot.

Halo Infinite is also free across Xbox One, Series S|X + PC. Oh and so is Forza Horizon 5. Buy Halo/Forza on Xbox One and you can go play it on a Series X if you get one in the future. Build a PC? You can play it there. No extra cost. You already bought it once from MS so why do you need to buy it again?

yeah through BC but they are still ripping people off by charging for the upgraded features. you shouldn't need to pay extra for that. they should just see you own the game download the appropriate version for the hardware you're using.

That doesn't really matter at this point, you could have still had some digital version that was free for Switch, if you got it digital for Wii U, you didn't need a Wii U disk, to allow a free Switch version.

I agree they promised some free update, simply that this isn't some end of the world type thing. If someone really wants the PS5 version, wait to get a PS5, I don't even know what I'd do with 2 version of such a game in the first place if I already had a PS5 or something lol Why would I want the worst version JUST cause its free? Why would I even want to play it and THEN wait to play it on PS5? I might not care about playing it twice, I put over 90 hours in Horizon 1, shit for all I know I put just as much in the sequel, thus won't buy it for PS4.

It's a cross generation game! it's not next gen only which could indicate a larger budget and therefore justify a higher price.
