God of War 2018 still blows me for a PS4 game.

News flash: A god of war game looks like a god of war game.

Imagine if Nintendo fans started to complaint that Breath of the Wild 2 looks like a Breath of the Wild game, despite being made ground up for Switch.

I don't pretend to understand gamers anymore. There is so much emphasis on visuals this and visuals that. I think we've reached a point of being unappreciative of things. Are the 2018 God of War visuals so bad by today's standards, that even if it did look the same (it actually does look better, direct comparison videos have shown as much) that it's worth complaining about? Do people seriously only play games and only get a excited if the graphics somehow look better?

I don't get it. The new GoW game is a cross gen game (so not built from the ground up for PS5), and highly likely runs at 60 FPS - which is a far BIGGER improvement to gameplay than anything they do visually. GoW 2018 is 30 fps.

I'm playing the first game on the PS5 and it's still the best looking game on any console IMO. I think people being underwhelmed probably comes from the fact that it looks too similar to the first game. PS4 definitely holding this game back from it being extraordinary. I think Wukong looks better because it has a duller and more realistic color pallet. I sort of wish this GOW would use a similar color pallet. Same with Horizon. Overly saturated and cartoony colors are killing the realism.

Learn to read instead of getting triggered every time someone criticizes your favorite company. I literally listed why its anti-consumer and you moronically asked me to explain again. Fucking idiotic.

And yes I whined like a little bitch when Phil went out and promised cross gen games for two years. Others swallowed his bs like good little girls but I dont give a shit if its nitnendo, sony or microsoft when it comes to cross gen. You inferring im some sort of Xbox fanboys for criticizing a cross gen game shows me everything I need to know about you.

People have some unruly expectations.

Comparing a game that released near the end of a console cycle to its successor that released near the beginning of one, and expecting the latter to took full advantage of the new hardware is unreasonable.

It began development as a PS4 game. The next iteration will be a PS5-PS6 exclusive.

Some people aren’t even considering the amount of time the pandemic caused development teams to waste, working through lockdowns with alternative methods in isolation. Many of these 2022 titles were slated for 2021.

Insomniac is extremely productive, but they also have made two games (stellar mind you) in the past year much smaller in scope/size/length than the titles Naughty Dog or Santa Monica usually produce.

You can’t compare a team making 5-15 hour games to those making 30-40 hour games.

Some commentators here have completely thrown logic out of the window lol.
Exactly, it's just childish men having tantrums. The game still looks great. It started development before PS5 hardware was even known or finalized. These idiots want every major title to be an exclusive at the start of a console generation. It's unrealistic and shitty for the company. They will sell 10x more and it will still be a good game. These clowns crying about graphix aren't real gamers. The game > graphics. We have plenty of good looking games already. If you want super duper graphics build a gaming PC.

I guess it's rough to say its disappointing but because the 2018 game looked that incredible it softens the impact of this one as it clearly looks like a ps4 pro game running at 60fps.

The game looks nearly identical to the last one. Everyone saying otherwise is totally delusionnal (and knows it deep inside)

Even gow 1 to gow 2 on the ps2 was a bigger leap.

This feels like GoW Ascension. A game made by the B team. Wouldn't be surprised if Cory took all the A talent with him for his new IP. It happened before when stig did the same for his cancelled new ip.

Well that was a few gens ago. We're hitting diminishing returns when it comes to computer graphics. We won't be able to easily see the jump in graphical fidelity like we did going from PS2 to PS3.

The game has no date and is very far from release. There is plenty time to build something amazing that will stun. I admit the trailer upon a rewatch was pretty underwhelming. It didn't give the impression of the kind of trailer you expect for a big epic sequel to one of the best games last gen. It did have a sort of DLC vibe to it, but it was beautiful visually and artistically regardless of what anyone says. It has plenty of time to develop. It literally has no year. Give them time.

As to the rest regarding how it plays, what did people expect? Totally different gameplay mechanics when people already loved it? The point is the story continues, new adventures, new bosses and events, new characters.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 will be the same thing. Games just take too long to make now, and are too expensive. Any direct sequel will be built on the bones of the previous game. Horizon 2 feels like a real outlier to me now, and looks like a substantial graphical jump. I don't expect that leap from Spider Man 2 either.

I was too harsh on horizon. It does look like a significant leap.

Even forza horizon seems to be doing more to at least up the detail level. Yes the lighting still feels a bit last gen but the environmental detail is a massive improvement over forza horizon 4.

Halo, gt7, gow all look literally identical.

Graphics whores, amirite? Game looks great. LOD in the distance looks amazing as well. The game is still a ways out, so there's always room for improvement. But at least GoW fans can now experience the torment the Halo fans receive. There's nothing wrong with a little common ground.

we aren't even close to hitting diminishing returns. Just look at black myth, avatar, ue5 and even ratchet.

Next year when they finally show next gen games you will see the difference immediately.

How many people here have a Xbox Series console and no PS5, but are still commenting?... 🤔

I agree it was a bit underwhelming as a PS5 game. Bigger issue would not be addressing enemy variety and adding more big boss battles/set pieces. You know, the stuff God of War is known for.

GoW on PS4 looked great....and so does this. But anyone saying how this blew their mind or on the first page the guy that cant even believe this could be possible...you guys are stretching it. Game looks probably identical with some graphical tweaks in lighting. Thats not to say the game looks bad or dated, but no, get real, this is barely a graphical upgrade. Also those glitchy NPCs on the right hand side, while they are on their little boat going through some village, no nothing advance there lol.

I was underwhelmed. The first is my GoTY. This looks like more of the same. It will be good but the showing was shockingly underwhelming. No Thor, no compelling narrative, no compelling combat choreography shown, no new gameplay shown.

It was basically a trailer showing off Boy after puberty and some lake shots.
To me, it looked like a DLC for the 2018 game.

Mind you that I find the 2018 game extremely good, so it doesn't mean at all that I find GoW: Ragnarok bad.

As new consoles come out, the jump in quality is diminishing returns. And any game that is cross gen will be gimped more.. This goes for Xbox and PS. So far, the biggest boost is any game are RT shininess and lighting, and just about every game is 60 fps now.

We already saw the jump from 360/PS3 to One/PS4 and Pro/One X to Series X/PS5 are there but pretty muted improvements. The jumps from system to system eras back were way more substantial.

I'm a console gamer myself, but for anyone on their high horse about making fun about PC gamers and their incremental boosts even with awesome GPUs, well the same can be said about these next gen consoles. Looks like incremental boosts to me too. So looks like were all in the same boat.

Since I had a One X (which many games were already 4k or close to it), the biggest difference I see so far with Series X is having 60 fps seemingly standard (even many BC games boosted to 60 fps). The improvements to textures and RT are there too with next gen upgrades, but not really a giant wow factor.

I don't think people know what "cross-gen" means....

Cross-gen = PS4 game that will be "enhanced" on PS5 and these enhancements usually include 4k, 60 fps, ray-tracing, dual sense haptics and 3D audio. So the graphics will not be that much different on cross gen games. That's why everyone was pissed that this and horizon are cross gen.

When scalpers in your country charge literally US$1100 for a PS5, believe me when I tell you that nobody in their right mind would buy a PS5 at that price. I for one wouldn't do it even in a million years (even though I'm considering to buy a PS5).

Is Cory not working on this GoW?

Excellent comparison. That’s how I felt watching the trailer: more of the same. Not a bad thing... but not all that exciting either.

Looking forward to what actual next generation game Barlog is working on.

Diminishing returns does not mean that there is no progress, it means that visible progress costs comparably more and more performance.
For a true generational leap in visuals" the current gen consoles will have to take a heavy hit in the FPS / Resolution sectors if they don`t get some miracle medicine like Nivida`s DLSS somehow.
Something like Metro Exodus EE`s advanced RT GI has basically no chance to become a standard on the consoles, and that is stuff that is actually transformative, visually. The power is just not there.

I'd prefer a next gen only version but this still looks great to me. I bet it's going to look better than most games releasing next year.

You will see massive improvements once they stopp supporting ancient hardware. 1,8TF vs 10 TF is a massive difference. Given modern architecture improvements and tech being better developed (engines, compression etc.) the jump will be noticeable for even the most untrained eyes.

True, but a lot of power gets eaten up right away with res boosts and 60 fps. Whatever power is leftover for graphics and physics and AI. And given the trend it seems focus on RT as next in line to grab a slice of that 10+ TF of console power.

Like just about every generation of gaming, the amount of time and power funneled to AI and physics is small. Frostbite destruction is probably the biggest jump in physics leading to gameplay adjustments as people play. Most other game engines look better, but act the same as old eras.

At the same time you have reconstruction methods that give you back performance. At the end of the day there is a lot of headroom to do much more detailed and better looking stuff, and like UE5 showed us, it can all be done faster then ever before with use of scanned stuff etc.

Sony just can't let a 100 mill user base go like that. I could see them having cross games for a long ass time...

I love God of War on the PLaystaiton 4. One of the best games made period! Infact I replayed it 2 months ago on my PS5.

The issue I have with the Trailer today is it did not wow me. In fact, it looks exactly like God of War on the ps4 pro. I was expecting graphics that dazzled me and really showed an evolotuion of the game but didn't see any of that in the trailer shown today. I know the game isn't finished and they didn't show much but it's unusual for a game to look dramatically different from it's initial game play reveal. I will no doubt be buying the game day 1 but kinda depressed the game doesnt look like a huge leap forward graphically.
I felt the same. I was hoping it wasn't going to be cross gen and would really set the standard of what we can expect from PS5 considering this is one of Sony's best 1st party developers. This pretty much confirms it is going to be cross gen. Also while I thought GOW PS4 was a good game It was really overhyped so I'm hoping for much more from this. The 10/10 scores it got were ridiculous.
