Are there actually any games that have BOTH balanced melee combat and gun combat (i.e. a hybrid between a third person shooter and action game)?

Whenever there's guns in third person action games (i.e. Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, etc), they are extremely weak or useless and generally aiming sucks, it's lock-in aiming, or there is no aiming.

Whenever there's melee weapons in third person shooters, it feels weird using them if locked in the over the shoulder view.

Long story short, I feel like it's either one or the other. Either it's a third person action game OR it's a third person shooter. Never really seen the two meshed together well.

Days Gone.
The shooting or melee builds/equips are both effective.
Yeah but the melee system in days gone is basic as fuck compared to the vast arsenal of guns and how different they feel, and if you try go melee at the harder difficulties against enemies with guns you are dead in 5 sec.

Kinda same in uncharted or tlou, except tlou has a lot of enemies without guns so it's more viable.

I can only think of Action RPGs, now you mention it. Games with guns tend to make melee a special action rather than a standard attack. I guess it can be quite difficult to balance a game round both, and depends on what enemy types the game has. They need to be fast and without guns

Remember Sudeki?

It didn't excel at either but it was enjoyable, and it had both third person melee and first person shooting, depending on which character you were controlling.

Pure action games like dmc or bayo have both melee and guns and you use them in tandem.

In almost any other genre, the combat is more melee centric or gun centric.
The melee in DMC is much more complex than any weapon you wield. It is not balanced.

If we count stealth melee it is very effective.
It’s the one game where I’d use both all the time.

Yeah that's also true.

But it's basically impossible to make guns as complex as melee weapons with combos and stuff.

But in pure action games you switch between them so the usage time is probably more close to 50-50 than many other games.

At least this was my playstyle when i was an avid action game consumers (ps2-ps3 era mostly).

How is it in Bayonetta? Never played it.

I suppose the issue is It's hard to balance it.

Guns are by and large way better than melee attacks.

One of them has got to be nerfed.

Although it's not guns per say Horizon Zero Dawn came close but had not so hot melee combat.

Maybe the sequel will be a good example.

You can't count melee on stealth cmon, then we can count guns on stealth since days gone has that fucking OP crossbow that kills enemies with one hit (other then the usual silenced pistol or sniper) and melee weapons return to be the far less used type of combat even during stealth.

Never played myself, it was released when my love for action games was already diminishing.

but i saw a fuckload of gameplay on yt and it looks great (no shit lol)

If you like the genre it's a must buy.

I’d argue it allows for a good mix between the two modes. Often I start with stealth melees until caught then bring out the guns, since bullets are precious.

Yeah but melee is really basic, a couple of slashes and roll, and repeat, also it looks and feel clunky when compared to the game that inspired it (clearly tlou).

I still remember people shitting on how the melee looked in the various trailers before release...and they were right tbh, it tries to be arcade-y tlou but it kinda fails.

Bend need to tight up their animations in the next game.

The Last of Us Part 2 has both and both are great.

God of War almost feels like a shooter at times because of how fun and useful it is to throw the axe, despite being a melee game.

Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy improved the melee combat & stealth, adding a nice balance to its core shooting.

Dragon's Dogma ❤️ action game in an rpg wrapping. So much love.

Uncharted 4 is good at this actually. You can do both effectively and the animations are super enjoyable.

Also, MGS V if you can learn all the CQC combinations. It's really fun.

Yeah, I totally agree with U4 on this one.

I think people take too much for granted that Uncharted is labeled as a third person shooter when in reality, it’s a third person melee game with shooting mechanics.

I never warmed up to it, but perhaps Greedfall.

Also Torchlight, but melee combat in that is pretty much one-button.

First post nails it. And for the record, Devil's Third is a ton of fun and one of the best reasons to hold on to your Wii U.

It's an attempt at fusing Call of Duty and Ninja Gaiden nearly 50/50.

FF7 Remake has problems. But they nailed the combat. Ranged attacks from Barret feel just as good as using Cloud or Tifa.

Kid Icarus Uprising has melee attacks. It's not a very deep system as the focus is on shooting but you still have combos with your range weapons and even a stinger attack. It's also the only TPS I can think of that has gameplay based around invincible dodging which makes it feel much closer to Bayonetta than Gears, modern Resident Evil or even Warframe.

Warframe.

Although 'balanced' is questionable given there are over 300 guns and 180 or so melee weapons. Until recently, high level end game stuff was very melee centric, until guns were buffed a patch or 2 ago. Now its a little more even. But for the main portion of the game most anythings viable so long as you learn how to mod them properly

Now how balanced those weapons are within each category is a different discussion of course. And while i like the shooting mechanics and huge variety of things to shoot, the melee doesn't always feel that great to me, as effective as it can be

The guns in those though are basically just long-distance punches. You usually don't aim, you don't time your reloads, and you don't expect the guns to solve your problem unless your problem is, that fucker is going to rip me apart if I let him get too close.

As has been mentioned, it's tough to have a balanced and satisfying combo (unless your combo includes them in different modes) since the methods and rhythms and strategies of combat are so different.

Any Gundam Vs game.

Both range and melee game are very complex.

It's the movement skills that bridge the two skills together though as evasion and engaging is just as important as well as boost management.
