Wow thank you for repeating back to me exactly what I just said.

Ok...so what's your point? If advertisers will pay more to target a specific group of users than why wouldn't the database of users be worth a lot to MOBA lol?

For example, let's say MOBA is looking at two different sites to purchase with the purpose of generating ad based revenue. Video Game Site A with 300,000 monthly pageviews from anonymous users and Video Game Site B with 300,000 monthly pageviews plus a database of 50,000 primary email addresses. Considering how advertisers will pay more to serve ads to users who are tracked with cookies based on their hashed email address....why would MOBA not go with Site B?

Do you understand now?

What an idiot. That thread isnt a normal thread that moves up when people respond. It's stickied. It'll be there unless admin unstickies it and it goes away.

I noticed this one too, how stupid can you be...oh wait it's Nep!

Not only, that but even if in her mind she was right...she also bumped the thread :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Seems to be winding down a bit, I did enjoy the guy trolling the user angry at Nep by telling him not to ask questions, then when he replied said "thank you for your understanding. Maybe ask for a tag instead next time." master trolling and it went under the radar lol.

Veelk isn't Cerium's alt, he's just an idiot who types way too much. Go find any of his posts about DC movies, he basically writes novels about why he hates them and just can't let shit go. He's probably writing his umpteenth "Why I hate Man of Steel" thread as we speak. He was the same way here before Era existed.

Fair enough.

Yep. Nep bumped it herself to tell someone not to bump it.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In the old reeeera thread, I remember someone had done some analysis (website scraping maybe) and came up with the data that showed a very small percent of users made a vast majority of the posts. Kind of like the 80 20 rule but greater.

That's actually not true at all (the user database being worth a small amount). Ad companies are gearing up for the cookieless future, and one way they are pivoting is to serve ads directly to users based on their email address. These are hashed email addresses but they are used as cookies across sites that advertisers can track. The fact that era requires real (or paid or whatever the term is) email addresses for members is actually worth quite a lot to advertisers.
I see what you mean by hashed emails, but even that is going away. More and more data is being either encrypted with a one time pad per datapoint, or just hashed with a salt. Currently, you will see "anonymised", or internal identifiers being passed to third party processors, but any tying together of disparate accounts will be cracked down upon too. More and more, they just want the content itself for analysis, as it can be decrypted on a device and analysed with trained models for a particular campaign etc. They can even slap an "end-to-end encrypted" label on it, as your device is the thing doing the processing for them, indirectly.

Look, not trying to be snarky./... apologize if I was... but the convo at resetera is based on people thinking the user DB is something that will be 'sold off', as if that precious information is somehow going to be siphoned off to others now that MOBA owns the site.

There is value in having a userbase; hell forums are entirely based on that as the users generate the content (as opposed to say, a Kotaku, where the comments under articles are not a significant portion of why anyone sees an ad on the site.) But the DB itself is not some shoppable item; and honestly having a "primary" email address isn't all that relevant to advertising. I dont use my work email address anywhere on the web.. hardly anyone does... everyone on the planet uses gmail or some derivative (exaggerating, but it's a massive percentage.) That's because they aren't permenant. So for ad tracking purposes, my work email I dont use anywhere else, including my credit card, on other sites where they'd want to track my behavior, etc. is not some extra value. In the eyes of the ad trackers, I become actually MORE anonymous using an email like that.

Anyways covno is more in context of resetera freaking out over that DB being sold off; if ad services are expecting web sites to supply a hash of your email address for instance, why would anyone think Cerium wouldn't do that? Very few won't if that is what is expected in the future.

TLDR: No matter what "Value" there is in the user DB, there's no reason to think MOBA will handle the information "worse" than Cerium and co did/were going to.. hell.. if anything, they'd likely have better / more professional handling of the data.

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Also, if M.O.B.A want to be associated with a group of known sex offenders and pedophiles, then that’s their call — I just hope sales drop to reflect that choice.
What the fuck are you even talking bout?

The bolded text is a good point, but it's relatively anecdotal. I mean, it's logical to come to that conclusion but without seeing the data I can't say you're absolutely correct.

That's right, the actual database of user info won't be sold and handed over to a third party but advertisers will have access to hashed versions of the user email addresses if MOBA goes that route. So, if a user uses the same email address on era and any other sites opted in to a specific advertisers platform, they can be tracked. Obviously that would/could have been done under Cerium but I never said it wouldn't or couldn't be. My initial post was in response to the era poster saying the user database wasn't valuable which just isn't true. Whoever owns era will most likely be able to earn more ad revenue by providing ad networks hashed email accounts as opposed to simply generating ad revenue based on traffic.

Not in the advertising world. it's actually a newer technology that's an alternative way to track people that will take over after the death of the third party cookie.

Haven’t seen era’s online count go past 4000 yet. What are the other 46 000 users up to?
The user count takes into account banned users as well….the active users actually didn’t grow for 3 years (based on when the banbot was grabbing that data) but last time I looked it was nudging on 25k banned users and that was only 12 months ago

the banned users didn’t log perma bans and many of the bans were just temp ones but that doesn’t make it any better that you have banned almost half your userbase at some point

it’s basically the same trash sitting around shrieking to each other

What if I told you, that you can create a rainbow-esque table for hashes that resolve to ******@gmail.com (This actually doesn't affect ResetEra ironically!). I'm well aware of companies that just want hashed emails etc, but someone in those companies has already copped to the fact that it isn't secure. Hell, a lot of them can even reveal your picture...

Ok, what's your point? I work in the ad industry and what I'm saying isn't a big secret lol. I'm not making some theoretical statements.

I'm not arguing with you, I work in large CPG ad networks. Hashed emails are on their way out too because they are insecure.

You’re right. There’s nothing in it, except for the dozens of screenshots that were posted. Are you denying there’s a problem then?
I read many pages of that thread, the only screenshots I saw were incredibly vague and could not be considered evidence of pedophilia. When I asked, in that thread, where the smoking gun was, no one could provide one.

So, yeah, if a link to a thread that has nothing in it is what you say is "evidence" of a pedophilia "problem" among a group of people you don't like, I am saying that there is no such problem, and you're just a dick making projections.

Can you provide a link?
a link to what?
no, I won't because this was years ago. that particular thread.

nor will I go looking for one.
it is not up to me to provide you with proof.

you called a poster here a dick and then seemed to dismiss the thread shown, but you want more proof?

Yeah. That thread had nothing in it. The posters in that thread when it was open could not provide proof that what they were talking about was real.

The pattern continues.

I'm about half way through the resetera thread on this, and there are still posts asking if the money Cerium made is going to be given to causes supported by the community.

Get real, people. If you were freezing to death, Cerium would lease you the steam off his piss and then claim it back as a tax deductible.
