This time next year everyone is gonna hate this. Wonder who will be the first to turn it into a BR.

“We’re giving away that city without Neo and Trinity,” Libreri said. “It’s a full, living, playable city. If anybody wants to do a racing game in that city, they will be able to use all the blueprints, all the gameplay logic, all the AI, all the destructible cars. When you see the cars exploring, that’s not us adding explosions, where we animate it by hand. It’s all procedurally exploding because when a car gets impacted, it gets deformed, it will shatter its glass."

"“It’s purely a technology demo just to show what our customers can expect to be able to do when they’re using Unreal Engine 5. And in fact, when we ship the engine, for real next year, this entire city with all the AI for the traffic, all the building blocks, every air conditioning unit, every little piece of that will be made available.”

Something doesn't add up here. It's all procedurally exploding? During the chase scene I saw about 10 cars flip and explode exactly the same way.

Looks like Ubisoft's set for their next few games.

According to Alex on Resetera, PS5 and XSX are basically the same FPS wise.

Which corresponds to my experience as well.
Poor Alex is commenting on Twitter with some xbox fan about the ram usage of UE5 again cause the demo isn't on pc at the moment

I usually don't care for the realism that high profile games go for these days, because it brings along so many unnecessary issues in design and development, and then still ends up looking weird or wrong in many ways.

This, though, and considering that it is a tech demo, is indeed impressive to me, and while there's still room for improvement (reflections, physics, NPCs, AI etc), it's mind blowing to see this level of convincing world detail.

On second reflection, you have to say that this is pretty well done by unreal, first that fantasy setting that was pretty great, now dialed up into an approximation of an open world game.. dying to see what DF think of their answer to RT

Some junky framerate and a bit weird with cuts but looks great. Wouldn't want a real game outside of some quantic dream thing with that fps tho.

Nanite is amazing, to think that it's not using hardware rasterization with this level of performance is impressive.

Sorry if I ask something already discussed, but Keanu talking at the beginning of the demo is all real time?
i think (this is just me) he's real when he's his current age and seen reflected in the mirror, but everything else is graphics.

the graphics really become obvious with the car movement, imo, but yeah god damn... u gotta pay respects to unreal 5, RT disciples are happy to poo-poo it, but they're being willful.

I love 60fps but if requires the devs/creators to stray away from their vision, then 30 fps is fine to me.

Also looked really good, was so excited with the free-roam. Excited to go back, might become my "chill" game.

Also, the city skyline in the distance was pretty ugly and so was the water... Like really bad water (PS3 era)

Playing this demo felt as crap, if you want 30fps again go to watch movies, you will get cinematic experience.

So is this going to turn into a game, or is it just a tech demo to promote the movie?
I just find it surprising that they would put all this time and effort into a demo.
It looks great by he way, although the resolution and framerate is a bit shocking at times.

How much of a fuck you is it that Warner Bros, went with Epic and Unreal Engine while still working with WetaFX.....the company NOT really that Unity Technologies just bought.

Yes, Lumen is really power hungry. Maybe in the future it will be helped somehow by the ray tracing hardware in the new consoles to accelerate the global illumination, UE5 is not even finished yet. We'll see what Epic comes up with.
They said it's already hardware accelerated. doesn't mean performance can't improve.

Hats off to the creators, that is truly impressive.

I'm not sure I'm in love with such an almost realistic art style, its sort of approaching uncanny valley territory for me - but either way, from a technical point of view its incredible.

Unity is in C#, I doubt that they will be able to do this in their engine. Garbage Collection and all that stuff.

Many interesting stuff here. Lots of 4D scanning. 60-100 artists worked on this tech demo for over a year.

Also this is interesting:

"The final experience however is indicative of what is possible for a game, running on a PS5 or XBox Series X/S there is still a lot of CPU headroom that would allow a game designer to run the normal mechanics of a game. The team did not want to build a demo that was unrealistic for what a new AAA game would be able to achieve."

Trailer means nothing. Remember keanu on cb2077 trailer looked amazing as well

Imagine all the expertise The Coalition gained from working on this demo.
Tech demos are generally not actually for the public but for developers themselves to learn new techniques and workflow pipelines.

UE5 is still in Early Access devs getting a chance to work on projects that they dont have to "sell" is a godsend.
They can basically figure out how to integrate all these technologies for when they need to make a full game that the public will be able to buy and scrutineer.

Granted they would probably have done so internally anyway, having this murderers row of visual effects companies and outsource studios working with them effectively for free is like having the cake and eating it too.

Astounding until I went to a store window lol. Was worse than Forza Horizon 4 in tha respect. But holy shit at how real just walking round the streets feels and looks. Felt like a VR experience until then with the shooting.

Those visuals were insane.

Crazy to think they built such a big world for a Tech demo.

Only thing I hated was the "Fly" button... got me all excited, should have said "Drone" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

This game looks extremely good especially considering we are barely into the generation. Not to mention there is a lot of stuff going on, beautiful lighting and detail on the screen. Even the framer rate is smooth. I’m really impressed. Imagine UE5 games in 4 to 6 years. Now this looks like a generational leap over anything from last generation imo.

This demo combined with DLSS instead of Unreal's TAAU will do wonders.
The PC edition will be compiled with DLSS for sure.
Just hope it doesnt produce any weird artifacts with DLSS active.

To be honest, Path of Neo looked way more impressive back in the day.

This is not nearly as "photo-realistic" as I expected.

There is a difference between pre-rendered CG and real time you know?

Impressive tech demo btw. I hope it'll come on PC as well.

Is there any word on when the PC edition is coming?
I have to find the link but Epic said they will be releasing the assets (im guessing openworld section) on the Storefront and we will likely be able to compile it to run like we could the last demo.
The DLSS plugin is pretty much err...plug and play so when compiling it will certainly include the DLL.

Very surprising.

the tech demo it’s fully open world playable and runs alright.

We have to consider that this is a year 1/2 tech demo that HAD TO BE RELEASED BEFORE THE MOVIE, no 1 month delay to try that new thing improving the framerate or making lighting better was ever possible, the project had super tight deadlines.

It’s also a low budget tech demo, not a full game, as we have seen with Unreal Engine 4, the technology can be used much more efficiently on games (Days Gone first one to come to mind)

Now the bad: the image quality is quite bad even after removing the Matrix filter, sadly these consoles have weak ray tracing capabilities and aggressive reconstruction is necessary.

Eurogamer article says that lumen is now hardware accelerated aswell.

"The Matrix Awakens sees Lumen taken to the next level, with extra performance and fidelity in indirect and diffuse lighting delivered by the hardware-accelerated ray tracing hardware in the new consoles, which can also offer up ray-traced reflections and area light shadows. These systems are exceptionally heavy on performance, meaning that Epic leans in heavily on its TSR (temporal super resolution) solution that injects data from prior frames into the one currently being rendered in order to improve quality."
This was confirmed when they revealed the PC demo. Software accelerated lumens is targeting 1440p 30 fps on next Gen consoles, while hardware accelerated lumens is only 1080p 30 fps.

Neo and Trinity are 3d face scans, your avatar is probably meta human, im guessing

That would be my guess as well. Really sticks out though.
It is. Created from scratch by Epic according to DF. Its really impressive TBH. Naughty dog licensees face talent so they won’t have to design from scratch and their characters would look closer to Neo and Trinity models.
