Can Battlefield 2042 be saved?

it might improve but only a small number of players will stick around. it's the same shite all the time with Battlefield. releases in a shit state then gets updates that make it what it should've been at launch but by then nobody cares and EA are ready to stick the next game down your throat.
They average almost 3 years of support/content, so no.

The technical issues are mostly fixed already. Way faster than this has happened for any other BF before I might add.

The game is tons of fun with friends but due to the design choice with specialists teamplay with randoms has become absolutely nonexistent.... Which incidentally makes a single organized squad downright broken op btw.
The maps though.... Definitely the worst in the series.
If they add some better maps, overhaul the squad system and bring the scoreboard back this could still become not only a very good game but a very good battlefield game.
Portal also has amazing potential beyond what it already does
Finally, a voice of reason.

I doubt they will fix it. But if they do, it will be so long from now everybody will have moved on. In today's online gaming environment, the game has to hit the ground running and not only keep gamers, but attract new ones. There is so much competition and so many new games coming out, there is no reason to stick with a shit game. Period.

No, because for me one of the biggest flaws is the maps, they're awful and too stretched out. BF4 map sizes and 64 players was perfect for the franchise but for some reason Dice thought they needed to raise it to 128 because BR games have lots of players, but Battlefield isn't a BR game.

Is it?
Nothing whatsoever points to them wanting to "fix" anything mentioned.
Just one example: instead of listening to the community and giving us some goddamn nameless soldier outfits we get some fucking Elfs vs soldiers game mode.

They have already stated that 2042 is just a stepping stone in Battlefield's transition into a hero shooter game.
No action they have taken after the disastrous launch indicates they have listened to any of community complain, apart from fixing bugs and doing various weapon balances (which should have been fixed before the launch in any case!!!).
They will never give us a score board. They consider it a "legacy" feature = an outdated non-inclusive concept. They want a new fan-base. A different fan-base. I have given up hoping this game will ever get a comeback. This is it. Maybe we'll ultimately get some proper maps, and you'll be happy.
It might even turn out to be a semi fun game in the end. But it won't be a Battlefield game, since operators are a design decision that encourages solo play and generates "memes" that would appeal to the new fan-base.

nope. people move on so quickly. I feel like very very very few games can launch poorly and survive. Rainbow six siege did it, but thats about all i can recall

Its amazing to me that this cycle of broken AAA games continues. They never learn. Launch a pile of shit, eventually patching it to mediocrity 8 months later.
This generation sucks. Too busy checking FB/IG every 10 seconds, living in a pit of distractions.

If Battlefield 1 could be saved.
I believe this game can be saved.
Nah not the same at all...BF 1 was missing certain features but it made up for that in atmosphere, music and sound, detailed maps, and fun new game modes. It sold 15 million copies. BF 1 was fine. DICE took a chance and it worked. Name another AAA WW1 Fps. They should've recovered with a modern setting right after that. 2042 is just an unfinished, unbalanced collection of popular ideas that get shallow very fast.

It's software so of course it can be saved, but unfortunately when it does it'll be too late.

Here we go again...another hate BF 2042 thread. Its like people forgeot how bad BF3, BF4 and BFV launches were...lol.

It's already on track to be "saved". I am not excusing its launch issues but the patches so far have been great and the game is a lot of fun. I enjoy the specialists and 2042 rush more than I thought would.

They have nothing to lose to keep patching and evolving it. Indeed, I’m sure that was the plan all along; game is quintessential service model - only thing missing is the f2p part.
Well you know.. patching takes dev time = money

so the can loose money

No, this is their second disappointment in a row. This could have made up for 5 being disappointing . Probably the end of the series

Unless they go back to the old class system the game will be fundamentally broken….the game has no rhyme or rhythm and even when they patch is platoon support and fix the voice chat it will still be an empty shell

Glitches and maps they can fix pretty easily but if your core game doesn’t work it’s gonna fade out

I suppose it all depends on if they decide to double down on the game. I'm guessing at some point, EA will look at all the numbers and decide if it's worth continuing to work on or not.

They spent years trying to beat COD, or at least compete with it. They were on the right track with BF3. While BF4 was a buggy mess at first, it was obvious there was an excellent game underneath it all, because despite the issues, the player count only continued to grow. By the end, BF4 was a great game. All they really needed to do was take those ingredients, and copy/paste it a couple years later. Make gradual improvements over the next few releases. COD does it this way for good reason. On one hand, it allows them to quickly walk back features and design choices that aren't popular such as they did with all the space ranger and wall running crap. On the other, players feel more confident buying the next installment because they know what they're getting. They know where the floor is. Not the case with EA and BF anymore.

Instead of continuing from BF4, EA tried to reinvent the wheel with every damn release. Instead of building on what they had achieved, they veered off the road with hardline. It didn't work. Instead of returning to what worked, and trying to improve from there... They released BF1 which was a completely different direction altogether. People saw BF2042 as the real successor to BF4. It was supposed to be a return to that formula, from which point they could move forward from there. Instead... They removed major gameplay designs, and replaced them with others that none of the fans asked for, nor wanted.

The objective is to build a big beautiful house. We know it. They know it. Dice knows it. Everyone knows it. BF4 was a perfect foundation that they worked hard to build, and fans supported. Instead of building the house on that foundation, they chose instead to build a garage out front first with Hardline. Then chose to build a pretty garden out back with BF1. When it finally looks like they're gonna start building on that foundation with BF2042... We find them digging through that perfectly laid foundation, because apparently they've decided they want to build a basement.

Don't they release a new Battlefield game every ~2 years or so?
EA will release blog posts about what's in the works for "the future of Battlefield" and then they'll shift over to the new title and build hype for that instead.
DLC might be released to scrape some extra cash out of the dedicated few players remaining. Then EA will say "no more big patches because 95% of staff are working on new BF title".
Rinse and repeat. For further reading see: Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, Star Wars Battlefront etc etc.

Nah bf is too big to be shut down, at least for now. If they keep bleeding players they will have no audience left and that's when ea will pull the plug. It's really sad dice has fallen so low. They were marketing this game as a return to form for the franchise and it's one of the worst bf games.

It just plays like a mess. The matches have no flow. Just a big sandbox full of shit. My PC buddies keep bugging me to play with them and they’re having fun just doing sniping practice with the high player count. I guess it’s a fun game for people that like sniping? The maps are also just trash. BF4 was one of my favourite games last gen. It’s sad how they can’t reach that anymore. Maybe they need to simplify it again and just go back to basics. Even both battlefronts flowed better than this

Those aren’t actual errors by Dice. If there’s heroes there has to be villains like the Dice Battlefront games.

Anything can be saved. Just look at NMS or F76. It's just going to depend if the number of people comes back plus new people join is equal or greater than how much it cost to "fix" it.

I think they just went too ambitious. Should have kept the maps 32 vs 32 and made the maps smaller.

the battlefield portal option is more popular than the traditional battlefield.

Relaunch the game in 6-9 months with everything fixed + all missing "legacy" features + a big expansion, and everyone will forget about these issues.
They don’t even have to relaunch, just public acknowledgment and a roadmap for next year that they stick to would suffice.
EA won’t invest anymore though, so it won’t happen

Specialists removed the core of what made BF, BF.

They could design proper maps with less wasted space, a focus on meaningful destruction, and the cadence of combat BF games are known for. They may even one day finally fix the hitreg and resolve whatever infrastructure issues they have that cause all of the disconnects and failures to launch sessions. But as long as specialists are thing it simply isn't BF.

And if you think EA wont walk away from the game if they deem it to hard to fix...go and have a look at what they did with BF HARDLINE.......they basically let it die

I think we have entered into an era where if you mess up the launch of the game you cant be redeemed. Remember PUBG was hotshot on PC and sold over 50 million copies. But they lost it when the bugs were never fixed plus constant cheaters from china. The game has lost its launch mojo now. They are going free to play now in order to keep it alive. Same goes for cyberpunk even if they fix it, still many people are never going to buy it again.
By now the pubg devs should have made a billion dollars easy. They should already be making another game.

or is it too far gone.

Releasing a broken and unfinished Battlefield game is something we know since Battlefield 3 atleast, however this time around its not even the bugs and performance problems that is making this new installment a chore to play. This time the very fundamentals of the game itself are completely broken. From the game forcing you to play as so called "specialists" with the abundance of normal classes to boring map design, "hero shooter" vibes where people who play good don't get appreciated bc "everyone's a winner"....its just a mess.

Can DICE really fix this game this time around?

My own opinion is that its really too far gone this time, they will never make changes to their hero shooter styled gameplay imo.

What do you think?

They'll be ok.

I played a bunch today and finally played some of the other modes and the game is actually in great shape for a BF title only 1 month in. Fully playable, a few issues here and there like the scoreboard and normal performance stuff you see early on, but nothing game breaking.

In terms of specialist, I can see it simply put on optional and on the main games they just have all the classes to the other BF titles and put the rest of the 75 weapons in, but tbh, I wish that was the main problem lol That isn't shit to me. I still fucking revive, give out health, ammo etc Not much has change with my style of play and I feel the overreaction on it is a bit silly and way too hyperbolic.

The hit detection, scoreboard and performance should be the focus as nothing is fucking stopping anyone from just playing in Portal..... They literally put a whole ass mode in for people to PLAY HOW THE FUCKING WANT TO PLAY, to even still cry over this shit is crazy as it sounds like the gaming community simply loves complaining about shit. Someone literally could have told people that they wish Poral was a thing and explained its core concept and I'm 100% most would literally not shut the fuck up about how THAT is what they should have included, and they would have bought it day 1, and old DICE would have done it and they'd loooooove it if it was that etc

Yet.....when they do, folks would actually just focus on other things to complain about. So its hard to even gauge what is a real complaint. Look back at the BF4 complaints about "small" maps and how its Call Of Duty now cause Team death match and Metro map from BF3 lol Even look back at people crying about the BFV maps...

but hey, we are suppose to believe those maps are bad, but also big maps are bad, more people is bad, more options to play is bad.

The more I look at this, the more I realize Portal makes more sense for BF as the community literally has so many ways they want to play and have others play etc. That makes more sense for the future of the IP imho as many seem to want to ignore Portal exist, so they can complain about optinoal things....=)

The fact that BFV with all the hate that it got, low sales and all was able to even move almost 9 million units and get years of support, I believe faster updates, Portal and the free maps that can come to not just 2042 time frame, but PAST BF titles, will keep it alive and it will do just fine.

its already doing several times better then BFV that was suppose to flop based on neckbeard youtube screaming. lol

Being mad doesn't mean everyone feels that way folks and we've been down this road before with so many games. Wasn't Call Of Duty suppose to flop cause someone was downvoting on Youtube? OH yea low steam numbers, Call Of Duty is donez everyones /s lol

It can only be saved if they go all in F2P and fill it with mtx and NFTs. Besides that, I don’t see them recovering the costs of the game just from sales.

Why is it that BF games have the same issues every launch? You’d think they would learn by now.

I can’t recall the last BF game that wasn’t a shit launch. As a result.. I simply don’t play them anymore. I figure at some point they’ll actually release one that has good reviews, etc. and decide to buy it…

It’s quite easy EA .. release a good game, here’s my money…. Oh wait… not this time…

Perhaps BF 2142 will be better..

How did they screw this game up so bad? Isn’t it basically the same game mechanics and all with each iteration? Honestly, I don’t think there is much they can do for it now if they want to give it a good boost in popularity. Big price drop? F2P? Who knows? Yeah, I know most people play these games primarily for multiplayer, but leaving the campaign out probably made it lose a few sales as well and made the overall package look less appealing. That’s the main reason I didn’t even look at it and I actually enjoyed the other Battlefield games.

Releasing around the same time as COD:Vanguard and Halo:Infinite probably didn’t help either. Why do companies insist on releasing their high profile games alongside other high profile games? It’s moronic and generally suicide for their games. Not to mention it being broken at launch as well.

Add more Battlefield 3 & 4 maps (No Specialist and Not in Portal)
Also bring back main bases and vehicles spawning on map instead of a menu.
Allow spawn camping at main in hardcore mode. Make it more sandbox like BF3/4.
Bring back mav drones (including standing on them for a lift up), bring back classes/kits, character nonsense is retarded when you think it's 128 players.
Just give us the crazy items to play sandbox, grapple hooks, wing suits, exo skeletons, fulton recovery systems.
It's like wtf is EA/Dice doing.

They could get rid of specialists and make a whole new set of maps that are smaller and more battlefield style. They need a server browser outside of portal VERY badly. If they don't make changes to 42; kind of like how they did with Battlefront 2, the series will suffer greatly.

the only good thing they've made since BF 4, is this Portal thing. If they just abandon 2042 and put all their resources into Portal. They will become a success story and ppl will play it.

but it sounds like they are doubling down on 2042's horrible core. BFV gameplay wasn't good, BF1 gameplay wasn't good. 2042's gameplay isn't good. It would take a herculean effort to turn this into a good BF game. Something they aren't capable of. Which is admitting fault and scorch earthing this thing
