Next-gen Racing Graphics Face-off | (Next-gen means current-gen)

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Hope no one minds if I spread some FH5 love here.

In terms of details on the vehicles, GT7 trumps FH5 but the excellent and varied environmental detail and the still-rather-excellent car models make the overall picture look better in FH5 to me compared to GT7.

Yeah overall really good looking and yes photomode looks much much better with all the effects and enhancements. The difference is even bigger than it was in GTS, the added RT reflections, added foliage, enhanced lighting, added self shadowing, better grass shaders, higher quality car models, better draw distance, better shadows and better image quality makes it really look better in every way. But gameplay still looks pretty solid and that 4K60 HDR is really nice.

Thanks for the comparison, it looks better than I expected. I don't think ACC could compete with it, maybe FM8?

AC with mods on PC looks amazing but it isn't vanilla though.

Yep, on vehicle details GT7 wins. But the environment from Forza Horizon is unmatched. I like more Horizon in the overall capture, but it's just my opinion.

GT7 also has amazing lighting. There's still something off about FH5 in that regard, but that might be an artistic choice of course. But I do think, based on the excellent gameplay shots posted by Turk1993 Turk1993 , that GT7 is lacking a lot in the environments. Whether that is due to technical constraints since it needs to run on PS4 as well or lack of resources at Polyphony is hard to say. I tend to think the former.

That is about realism and GT7 is a way realer driving game than Grid but in terms of pure graphics Grid is more pleasing to the eye we talking graphics here not about how real sim it is ok

Grid's rendering is a bit outdated, but seems to have much more track detail and some additional in-your-face effect layers. GT7 is more color accurate, and the track shaders are unmatched. They've also upped some of the additional FX, which is nice. But yeah, GT7 is often barren, low track detail and lifeless outside photomode, there's no excuse for that for a 2022 corridor racer. With that said, GT7 to me can look beautiful at times (and I would take it over GRID any day), but it's also frustratingly erratic. I mean, it's not uncommon in games that gfx can vary a bit, but GT7 swings so much from end to end, sometimes depending on the track, that it's really odd.

That's true, but I was strictly comparing the cars as you see during game play.

But yeah, Forza Vista is insane in terms of detail and how lavishly they do car porn.
During gameplay Forza still takes it since in GT7 the gameplay lod is still lower than photomode and scape mode lod. It is improved compared to GTS but still lower than the higher quality photomode models. The interiors are definitely better in GT7 since the materials and shaders are better and most of the same cars have more finer detail.
Worth noting that cars in Forza render much more stuff than in GT. Engine bays etc. I mean just look at this beauty:

Yup this is something that gets overlooked whenever they compare the highest quality models from both games. Wish there was a fusion between them, that would be the perfect car model.

You would be surprised when you see ACC compared to FM and GT :messenger_grinning_sweat: and im not even talking about mods/filters, pure vanilla version.

All the flak that Forza got for "Treegate", take a walk around Trial Mountain in walk mode during a replay photomode, every tree and bush is 2d and turns with the camera. I'm on PS5 as well wtf.

The idea is that when you're driving really fast you don't notice things like that, so I can't really blame them (either company) for doing that.

Oh yeah I get why it's done, I only noticed because I was looking for the Monkey in the tree. But I remember it being a big deal when Forza released with Maple Valley and it's trees

Looks like Polyphony use the same technique to keep performance up after all.

They improved some models compared to GTS but they are still lower quality compared to photomode models which are one of the best models ever. Shame they couldn't get those model runing during gameplay, atleast use them when there is only 1 car like FM does it in its time trial mode on older consoles.

I will do lots of comparisons between GT7/GTS/FM7/FH5/AC/ACC/PC2 in the coming days.
But meanwhile here are some GT7 gameplay shots from my PS5

There are some solid improvements overal like higher quality trees and foliage, higher quality lod car models (still not photomode lod), higher quality shadows, improved draw distance, high quality motion blur, improved reflections and some tracks got some of the ugly super low rez textures fixed (still can be found on some tracks). Its a solid upgrade overall compared to GTS, hard to notice on youtube video's but really easy to notice while playing. The lighting and car shaders look incredible and are easliy one of the best if not the best. I haven't played ACC on console so i cannot comment on that one yet but this is easliy the best looking racing sim on console! And the dynamic tod and weather look really good and add lots of variation.
Something we will agree now is that Replays in RT is indeed a big boost in IQ compared with Gameplay.
Very different from previous games.

Forza lighting just looks off, overly shiny doesn't look realistic, I don't think you can get car paint that reflective lol.

GT7 looks more 'real' for sure.

Nice!

I guess I underestimated F7's models.

GT7 to me is so hit and miss. There’s times where I’m blown away with how it looks and then other times it looks shit. Very inconsistent. The grass still looks like utter shit when driving as does the road when wet.

Yeah but this has been the case with GT for generations and by now I assume has to be by design. They focus on car models and other areas and focus much less on other areas. Plus in some of the past games they literally had basic cars from previous games and "premium" cars that actually looked current gen, so it all looked very hit and miss.

Dunno, GT looks a little "dull" there. Real life ain't bland.

I think GT7 looks incredible in motion, and Forza looks more "stylized" to me in motion (and also great), but in that closeup shot, I think just about anyone needing to pick blind would select Forza as looking better, more realistic or whatever you want to call it.

Wow, there is a big difference. lol. Although FH5 left and rear tail light for some reason seems slightly different.

TBH, I do not think it is a fair comparison because GT7 is running at 4K 60fps on a PS5. In order to run FH5 native 4K 60fps and max settings ? you are probably using a RTX 3080 or something.

The game use that LOD for ingame car model even in performance mode (native 4K and 60 fps) on a Series X:

The difference is staggering. I was expecting more from GT7 in that regard. Is it the same for other car models as well?

FH5 still wows me but nature always looks better than a race track so I don’t think GT7 is as far back at it might look at first glance, people just can’t compare them on the same tracks.

That said, GT7 has been underwhelming so far for me when it comes to race visuals. Fortunately the game is still great and the out-of-race presentation is top tier.

I can't believe you guys continue posting PC shots to compare to console games lol

Same happened in the past with GTS but at least this time it is being said it is PC... in the past tried to pass FH4 PC pics as Xbox One X.

It looks mighty fine on Xbox Series X as well. Just deal with it. It's the best looking racing game on consoles that looks even better on PC.

LOL

Do You know that XSX is practically Ultra PC except for a couple of points that even you wouldn't be able to differentiate?
In fact the LOD of cars in XSX is the maximum (also in 60fps mode) on PC.

So I don't know what you're talking about.

Pd.And the same happens with FH 4 on XBO X vs PC for your information. You have DF videos if you want.

GT7 looks good, in the same way that Forza 7 looks good. They have great looking cars (although GT7 screenshots above show a big dip in quality during gameplay) and so-so environments as a result of being track racers.

Forza Horizon 5 blows them both out the water visually.
It is just crazy when you think that fh5 is cross gen and also released on pc and both xss and xsx and how quickly playground was able to develop game of this quality.

Yeah.

It’s not without its own short comings though. The 60fps mode does bring in some noticeable pop in (especially in the forrest/jungle areas). Still, it always looks stunning, and luckily is a great game too.

We know who was complaining about it and why they were complaining about it.
Nitpicking little things here and there to try and play one game off against the other is stupid.
Both devs have different strategies for their games. PD usually have less cars but better car details than Forza, while Forza has more cars with slightly less detail. They only have so much time and resources that they can either spend more of that time getting the extra details and paint shaders down pat, or use that time to render more cars. Neither is a reflection of one dev being better than other.
The only real difference I see between the two studios, is that Turn 10 have a far better output than PD, which is weird as Turn 10 has like 180 employees and PD has 300.

If you look that way…

Turn 10 outsource most of their 3D modeling (they use several companies)… that is why they are inconsistent.

PD started outsourcing some 3D modeling with GTS.
