I've got a Vita so really all I care about is PS2. Something tells me the selection is not going to be that good, though, and I'm extremely hesitant to pay a monthly fee for this.

Is Ridge Racers 2 what I thought was Ridge Racer 2 or is that a different game entirely?
It's sequel to PSP launch game. And arguably the best R game in the series (I prefer R5 personally - but people will argue).
Most importantly - this never got a digital release before - anywhere - so of all the BC choices this one is a really welcome surprise.

How are the psp games going to play?
Better.

Really hope they bring something more than just straight emulation. These games will look awful as is on a big 4K tv.
I mean - PS4 got some 60 odd emulated games through its life-cycle (PS2 and PSP). They were all enhanced.

Do we have any idea if these are for individual purchase - or is it just for the streaming thing?

No chance. The money is in getting people subscribed in bulk.

Rather than buy one game for $10 you'll pay $18 to access 340 of them, then realise it's a better option to buy 3 months for $16.66, then realise it's a waaaay better option to buy 12 months for $10 each. Now your $10 is $120 even though you may not even end up playing 12 games on the service to get your money's worth.

Would play the shit out of Ridge Racer 2 again. What a game.
Same here. For me it's the best Ridge Racer ever. I had the first PSP one too, but never was able to know what were the differences of content between both PSP games at least in circuits, and if RR2 featured all cars, music tracks and circuits from RR, RR Revolution, Rage Rager, Rave Racer, RR Type 4, RR64 and RRV.

Do you know if RR2 features the content of all these games or the list of specific differences between the RR and RR2 PSP games?

True, but those were for sale so they had to give some incentive to rebuy them. These will be on a sub so who knows what form they might get dumped. Just hoping for some effort.

Good start, hopefully this is just the beginning, also that we can buy retro games digital on PS5.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
they were this high res? maybe, I don’t remember
Lmao yeah.
They had a totum display (about 5 ft high) in my local store when it was first released with the same artwork,
Tried to nick it but it got damaged 😟
They clearly had a higher resolution version that was from the original master copy
Namco probably has a large poster in their office's too
But for example
tekken2-character-art-poster.png

They definitely had that stuff in higher resolution
Btw I'd definitely play Ridge Racer 2 @4k

Majorly doubt we'll get it this good though

I wouldn't count Sony out just yet.

Remember how they barely mentioned PS5 backwards compatibility before the console released and once it was here even Digital Foundry was surprised at how great it was?

PS2 and PS3 were great at it as well. I know times are different but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

At least the covers are looking HQ :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It will be pretty embarrassing for Sony if those don't have online multiplayer... Even Nintendo figured out how to do it, so there's no excuse really.

That's a really weird way to look at it when the yearly fee of $120 is for the entire package, including PS4 and PS5 titles. It's more like $20 yearly for the classic titles. So if you play 2 classics a year you already got your money's worth for the upgrade.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't even really expect all of the games to have trophy support. I'm keeping my expectations so low that even a three year old should be able to keep in line with them.

The video game industry has made "I hope I'm wrong" my catchphrase.

My expectations are low... But not as low as expecting worse than Nintendo.

We're talking strictly classic access here - there's no alternative, it's either pony up for the full thing to play them or not at all. Just explaining to the guy why you won't see individual old games for sale.

Nintendo added them in manually, I think they’ve only done it to 100 titles so far, so it’s no easy process. Sony won’t go that route.

My expectations are the current PS classics that were on PSnow and on the PSstore which is a tiny selection. And I wont get premium if its a tiny current selection.

If they give a good library of PS1/PSP/PS2 games Ill be good with that. Im not even thinking about trophies, upgrade or online modes etc

The question is with Ridge Racer 2 will you get the same under-whelming feeling once you completed it like you got With Ridge 4 when it was available on the PS3...

I’ll say this one more time Sony’s confusing backwards compatibility is the worst thing ever.
Judge Joe Brown GIF

nahhhh, I'd argue even calling this backwards compatibility is more confusing on your end.

1.Sony has never called this BC, not once, no statement ever by them has stated such a odd thing.
2.No way can you take your original titles and play them using this to argue its BC

At this point, its like saying "Popeye's confusing Fish Sandwich is the worst thing ever" and your ass is at a Wendy's Drive thru looking at a large fries.

please add bloody roar with online play

And Bushido Blade 1 & 2
Share Play is a OS level feature in PS4 an PS5 that can be applied to all games with local multiplayer. I never tested it on PS2 games but it should work, so I assume it will work too on PS1 and PSP games, allowing you to play online with friends in any game with local coop at least in this way.

Emulators for PC and mobile of Nintendo devices have online multiplayer on an emulator level, no need to make it game specific. Sony could do it in that way if SharePlay isn't enough, wihout needing to implement a per game implementation.

They said at launch Premium will have up (depending on region) to 340 PS1+PS2+PS3+PSP games. But who knows how many of them are PS3 games.

Shareplay is not a viable option for most of the world, and even where it is it's still not a suitable replacement for actual multiplayer. If Nintendo, a company that has an online infrastructure that's held together by a piece of gum and two popsicle sticks, figured it out... I can't imagine how much of a challenge it would be for Sony. Even Sega managed it on their latest Sega Genesis collection

Depends if we’re talking pre-existing online or brand new online which Nintendo had to manually implement. The latter won’t happen, the former might.

As far as I know, SNES, NES, MD or N64 games didn't feature online multiplayer and they don't have new multiplayer game modes in Switch. Switch simply stream and syncs the button presses like PC and mobile emulators do. It don't see why Nintendo would have to implement per game online MP when they are games running on an emulator. It's better to do it only once at an emulator level.

It wouldn't be any challenge for Sony, it's easier and simpler than implementing it for a modern game where there are loobies, rankings, matchmaking and so on. It would be only to sync the games and send the button presses for a gamepad and to receive the ones of the oher pad.

I assumee they thought only a small portion of players used BC games and only a small part of them had local coop, so the amount of players interesed on it wouldn't be high enough to make worth to implement it, or maybe didn't even realized that there is that there is that possibility.

I'd to ask Sony on the PS blog comments or to whoever may be on charge of the emulation that it would be a good idea and tha emulator on Nintendo, PC or mobile use it. I assume they'll see it's a good idea cheap to implement, so if they have budget for future emulator improvements they may consider it.

Here’s a list.

They added online multiplayer to some NES titles.

I know they added online MP to the VC, I meant they didn't have online MP in the original devices.

Yep. Isnt there more PS3 games on PSNOW currently then 340?
Yes. As I remember the list of games changes per region, but according to the psnowguide.com website (I have no idea if it's updated) PS Now has:
-395 PS4 games
-415 PS3 games
-21 PS2 games

I assume they'll clean the fridge removing crap PS3 games or save them to rotate them to make room for PS1, PS2 an PSP games. Or who knows, maybe instead of rotating they keep adding over time.

As long as they give us a good amount of delicious PS1/PS2/PSP games Ill be happy with less PS3 games. I do needto Finish Sly 2 though
