Having played all three I must say that my favorite, and by a long shot, is V.

I think it has the best gameplay out of those three, and the story is fine enough without being too convoluted, like VI did.

Is 5 the one with the twins and the moon? If so. . .absofuckinglutely. I know 7 is just everyone's favorite for some reason, but 6 has way more heart than anything in 7 and is just more fun. I'd say I'd love to see a remake of it, but not at the expense of what made it great and how they've "modernized" FF7.

There’s an argument to be made for VI, but V, not so much, it’s the best version of the job system for sure, but the story is rather weak. VII is amazing for a reason.
Five was strange in the timeline of releases, a move back to mechanics after the more story driven 4. And I guess the last of its kind.

Most of the series is better than VII. VIII, XIII, and XV are the only entries that are clearly worse. II, III, V, IX, XII are in the same bracket and everything else is easily above VII.
Somebody really needs to keep their retards locked up and away from internet access

I just recently played 6 and 7 for the first time with zero nostalgia / rose tinted goggles.

They both have theirs strengths and weaknesses honestly and I couldn't tell you which I preferred overall. Can't speak to 5. Playing 8 now and... not loving it at the end of disc 1.

Maybe FF6 was great back in the day, but it isn't great if you're playing for the first time now. I played it for the first time a year or so ago on the SNES Classic and didn't really enjoy it. The story was decent, but I thought the mechanics were too obtuse. I need a bit more hand holding. Or at least give me a tutorial on how the different characters fight. I was so lost and had to spend a lot of time on wikis trying to figure out the different characters.

And I haven't played FF7R, but the original was decent. Again, at the time. No idea if it would hold up now. The story was far worse in FF7 though. Characters were probably worse too. But it had better gameplay imo.

People tend to put FFVII on a pedestal because it's the first Final Fantasy they ever played, Also the PlayStation changed the way the series was presented and it became more desirable to people who didn't care for the style of the prior entries. It's a good game with a great story. But yeah, it's not the best Final Fantasy game.

I think FF6 is better than 7.

Better characters and villains to me. Gameplay is more or less identical, just the graphics/story that differ. (though honestly, the stories are incredible similar with 6&7.) Crisis Core had a better story to me than FF7.

At the time 7 was revolutionary, but 6 is a better rpg imo. Both probably in my top 5. Sadly I never play 5 as 6 (originally 3 in the US) was my first real rpg. I think Breath of Fire was my second. Fuck we were spoiled in the 16bit era. Regardless, I'll definitely play 5 if they do a 2dhd remake of it.

FF7 made people literally cry over Aeris. But it was also the first mainstream FF. Heck, the ones before didn’t even release in Europe.

Gameplay wise I love FF6 over every other installment. It’s the only FF that I played through so many times, with different teams.

The best is clearly final fantasy one, without that there is no final fantasy

EDIT: Kidding, FF7 is obviously the best there’s a reason its not the underdog here

Couldn't tell you a single character name from ff5. That's how forgettable that game is to me.

Edit: golbez? Is that a name from ff5?

Hey SlimeGooGoo SlimeGooGoo , why do you think FFVII is so great?

That's some bad memory if you don't remember Gilgamesh, being such a popular character and all that.

I really like 5's gameplay better, but 7 has higher production values and I really like pre-rendered backgrounds more than 2D sprites.

My favorite one is 9 though.
I get it. I couldn't get into FF7 when I tried it, maybe I should give it another chance.

And 9... Man everyone keeps saying is one of the best and I still have to play it. Hope it's good! :)

How can it be a hot take if it's true?
I drifted away from the series after the move to 3D, 8 and the terribad PS2 game with the laughing. Dragon Quest managed the jump to 3D much better, but they mainly did handhelds for a long time.

I think you made a typo OP and meant to say “IV and VI” are better than VII. I did enjoy V though.

i have played 9, the gameplay was pretty decent and the backgrounds and models are some of the best looking in the series, like drop dead gorgeous
Definitely do, it's a great game.

FF9 is the most polished one of the PS1 era, and it has that nostalgic feeling since it brings back once again castles, knights and black/white mages.
Just talking about it makes me want to play it again.
Guess I know what I'll be playing once I finish Okami. Thanks fellas!

Nah. Ffv is the most forgettable of the SNES games and certainly the most forgettable of 4-15.
It has it's moments, I wouldn't call it forgettable at all but whatever, to each their own.

FF5 has a unique job system that made battle gameplay very good. Graphics and story were low quality though.
FF6 was the top of what JRPG could be on the 16 bit era systems (without CD). The only thing that competes is Chrono Trigger.

FF7 was a massive leap in story, graphics, music, and arguably a same as or slightly better battle mechanics as FF6.
With the stronger story and graphics, the win is clearly with 7. Only a fond sense of nostalgics can give 6 the win.

BTW 4 is way better than 5. 8 is garbage.

FFVII for me, because of personal bias and aesthetic appeal. Final Fantasy VI is right below for me. I basically love everything about VI, VII just came at a more impressionable time for me. But are improbably fantastic though.

FFV, it's been about ten years since I played, but from memory, it would just barely miss my top five, those being

FFVII
FFVI
FFIX
FFXII
FFI

The value of FF7 is not in wether it's the best FF ever or not - the value of FF7, in 1997, was in being the definitive title that defined for a whole hardware generation and million of people the nature of cinematic, 3D/CGI console entertainement.

The best FF est generally the one you started the franchise with. So FF6 for me.

That's a very lukewarm take, a lot of people agree (although I think IV is more commonly mentioned than V).
