Rumor: Mid-Gen Upgrades for PS5 and Xbox Series X devkits have been received by most AAA studios, according to GTA Forum insider

There was a Sony patent for putting 2 GPUs together, so doubling the PS5. They'd probably have to almost double the price too...

But like others are saying :

The idea of a console with a >$500 price tag frankly defeats the purpose of making a console to begin with. Hopefully that patent is for some 10th gen console and not this pro stuff because that sounds like hell to afford.

If we consider the difference between the xbox one and the xbox one x, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Microsoft will redesign their console internals to better compete (for those unaware, the x1x is a 'next gen' console under the hood and completely different from the og x1 architecture.)

Could never argue with that. the X1X showed they are willing to do a complete rewrite on their mid-gen system if they feel the need, even if it requires extra work on their end to keep the previously released software running. Honestly, with AMD moving to chiplets you might see MS rewrite all of the systems. I can see where the chiplet approach could be a good fit for manufacturing multiple consoles. XSS = 1GPU chiplet w/modest clocks, XSX = 2 GPU chiplets w/higher clocks, XS Super X Elite = 3/4 gpu chiplets at highest clocks.

They could always just revamp WMR. Maybe go with a wireless headset but forget the local play capabilities, utilize just enough hardware to facilitate the stream. Hopefully with an ad-hoc dongle so that users wouldn't need to worry about setting up an additional router and that kind of thing. You can get 5Gbps out of the USB 3.2 gen 1 ports which should allow them to get a decent result (that's what 600Mbps or something like that) and would allow support for existing consoles and older PCs (with bonus points for making the dongle support faster speeds if available, make it a gen 2 or gen 2x2 device that can fall back). The new mid-gen system would support the faster USB. This type of thing could work with a Meta or Valve partnership as well, if that's the way they went.

It is too weak. Ps4 wasn't powerful enough for vr, even with the breakout box and the pro version. While the series S is more powerful than a ps4pro, obviously, it doesn't have the grunt to match high end PC headsets.

Xbox series VR or whatever it will be called, will be the best place to play VR games. And I for one would love to see Halo VR.

Of course it is too weak. They can support the PS4 too. You just get middling results, as we've seen all fucking gen.

Series S is going to hold Xbox games back. All gen long.

minimum spec for Half Life Alyx is a GTX1060, a card with less GPU power than the Xbox One X

this means the Series S should easily be powerful enough to handly any VR game at the level of Half Life Alyx, with console optimisations even more than that

the Series S has less GPU power than the One X i'm pretty sure. Less powerful than the GTX 1060 possibly

the Series S is basically on par with the GTX1060.
the One X was between 1060 and 1070.

also minimum specs on PC don't mean that's the lowest a game can run at, usually you can get somewhat ok performance on slightly lower specs as well

It doesn’t matter how many of these reports comes out. These consoles will never get a midgen refresh because it would make zero sense to do so. The market for it would be too small.

Heck most people don’t even have a HDMI 2.1 TV to do 4K/120 fps. Much less a 8k display.

Phil confirmed like a year ago that they have 'more consoles in development'.
Mid gen machines will happen.
But that doesn't necessarily mean an even higher end SKU. It could be something similar to the Xbox One S: Same system as Series X but a redesign. I seriously doubt Microsoft would really want to have three different SKU's on the market, on top of Cloud streaming.

As such, I don't think a mid gen refresh is currently being planned. There's no real marketing hook for it, and it's not like the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X were that successful.

Both PS5 and Series X going for $300 at Gamestop.
This gen has been an entirely big ball of disappointment, all together.
"An Entirely big ball of Disappointment."

Ah come on already? I feel like I've played 1 game from this generation. I have absolutely no money left for such upgrades.
How is this too soon? PS4 Pro released in November of 2016 which is 3 years after its launch in November of 2013. PS5 released in November 2020 and next year in November 2023 will be 3 years. Probably will be November 2024 though due to COVID. Time-frame wise it's exactly same or longer lol. Xbox One X came out a year later in November 2017.

These pro units must have been in initial design phase. I hope they take their time with these machines. 2023 q4 is best time to release.

Perfect timing now that they got PS5 slimmed down, finally running silent and cool plus price just got cheaper.

When will gamers, devs and console manufacturers understand that the limit these days is due to man-hours and budget, not TFLOPS... Id argue even the ps4 wasn't pushed to the extent the PS3 was. We never saw what naughty dog, playground, Coalition or rockstar could have done if they went for 720p 30 with drops instead of 1080p 30.

Both are roughly 10 TF consoles with very limited RT capabilities and no AI based upscaling.

Top of the line PC card is close to 100 TF (over 100 TF when overclocked) with amazing RT capabilities and powerful frame generating upscaling. The gap between PC cards and consoles is getting very wide already.

And these consoles are basically low end PC's, they don't have any tricks in the sleeves and nothing special under the hood to give.
Rumor is rtx4050 low end card will boost 20tf power.

it would be dumb to launch mid-gen consoles on 24/25 , they should launch ps6 or the next xbox by then
spongebob-stupid.jpg

and how exactly would you make a next gen worthy performance jump affordable in that timeframe? And why on earth would console makers cut their gens short with such a slow start thanks to corona and co?

Mid-gen upgrade doesn't mean PS5 pro or XB series more, they could be dev-kit revision based on 6nm APUs. Why people jump immediately towards PRO version of current machines?

Does not make sense. We haven't hit the bottleneck with the current systems yet. Not to mention the console production cannot satisfy the demand.

Yes, but this time, as owner of both current gen consoles, I don't feel like i got anything out of them. I could still be using my old ps4 and xbox one x.

Are those statements from that indivdual developer?

Are you even remotely interested in a good faith discussion?

no
There's eventually a cutoff point with cross-gen. The other scenario (with the S) is here to stay.

Framerates and IQ have been a major upgrade, IMO.

My initial reaction was... "why?"
My second thought was.. ..."I hope I can find a good trade-in deal."
Now... "When can I preorder. I don't want to wait for a deal and risk not getting one at launch."

I am getting plenty out of current gen systems - titles like Demons Souls, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank and FF7 Remake Interlude.

I play my Series X more though, due to Game Pass and how fast it is to resume and switch games around.
