Silent Hill 2 remake revealed, first gameplay details and design changes announced

Konami and Bloober Team on how they're reimagining the horror classic for PS5.

Hello, I am Konami producer Motoi Okamoto. When it came to reviving Silent Hill, what we saw as most important was to do so together with those who love the series. Silent Hill had been, if you will, ”silent” for many years. Yet, even during that silence, we had been receiving proposals for new entries and remakes. This is truly a franchise that is beloved by so many fans.

Bloober Team was one such team with the most passionate of proposals. They are a studio that truly loves and specializes in horror games. Together with creators who love Silent Hill, for fans who have a special place in their heart for Silent Hill, we have decided to remake Silent Hill 2. To explain more, I will hand it over to Mateusz Lenart, Creative Director & Lead Designer at Bloober Team.

The classic returns anew

Silent Hill 2 is a beloved and timeless classic – it’s almost a cliche to say it out loud, but it’s just so true for many of the Bloober Team members. This is also the reason why we approach working on the remake with such great care and respect for the original game.

With that in mind, one of our primary goals is to preserve the atmosphere that made Silent Hill 2 so exceptional, while also modernizing many aspects of the game’s overall gameplay. We are working closely with the original creators, including Akira Yamaoka and Masahiro Ito, to ensure we’re keeping that unique Silent Hill feel intact.

One of the new elements that you could spot in the reveal trailer is the adoption of an over-the-shoulder camera. With that change we want to immerse players even deeper into the game, make them feel like they are a part of this unreal world, and deliver them a more visceral experience across the board.

One change often brings another. With a new perspective, we’re rebuilding the combat system and certain set-pieces, among other things. Now that you see basically what James can see, we could find new ways to keep the player on edge.

Twenty-one years have passed since the release of Silent Hill 2 for PlayStation 2 and the big leap in technology allows us to be even closer – at least in some aspects – to how Team Silent would have desired their game to be back in 2001. Thanks to state-of-the-art motion capture sessions, we can deliver the best facial expressions in the series’ history and show a wide range of emotions even before a character speaks a single word.

Built with Unreal Engine 5

We are updating the Silent Hill 2 experience comprehensively. With the possibilities of the Unreal Engine 5, we’re bringing the foggy, sinister town to life in ways that were impossible up to this point. The game will delight PlayStation 5 players visually, auditorily, and sensorily.

Some of the Unreal Engine 5 features that really shine are Lumen and Nanite. With them we’re raising the graphics to new, highly-detailed and realistic levels, while turning the game’s signature nerve-racking atmosphere to eleven.

Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. It means that the light interacts with the environment realistically, just like in the real world. The whole game environment is lit more naturally this way. The Nanite technology, on the other hand, is an amazing tool for level designers. With it, they can create incredibly detailed worlds and more realistic environments that look and feel almost lifelike.

New PS5 features

It’s not only graphics, though. A lot of Silent Hill’s disturbing atmosphere comes from music and sound design. Thanks to PS5’s 3D audio capabilities, players will be able to determine the exact direction where the sound is coming from. The WWise sound engine creates a realistic and believable soundscape that helps players feel like they are truly inside the game.

Of course, we are not forgetting about the DualSense controller. We’ve already shown with our previous title, The Medium, that we can get pretty creative when it comes to haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. We’re bringing even more new ideas for Silent Hill 2, but let’s keep a surprise for now.

7ae9570576176607dc0588453825999f5bbd7281-scaled.jpg

One last great improvement I want to mention is the SSD storage technology. The superfast data streaming means players won’t see any loading screens as they seamlessly explore the entirety of the Silent Hill town.

Armed with these technologies, we hope to make Silent Hill 2 an even more harrowing and unforgettable experience for fans old and new. We’re confident that we can do justice to this cult classic, and breathe a new life into its gameplay. The end result will be a Silent Hill game that looks and sounds better than anything that has come before it. While the development is not over yet, we already can’t wait for fans to experience it.

A new chapter begins

The revival of the Silent Hill series does not end with Silent Hill 2. We have announced not just the remake of a past classic, but also multiple titles with all-new stories. The creation of new games is what truly brings the franchise back.

We will create new games for the series together with those who were a part of Silent Hill, but also with creators who love the franchise. We will expand our partnerships and broaden the world of Silent Hill together with teams that love the series from around the globe.

Above all, together with long-time Silent Hill fans and new fans-to-be, we will raise the Silent Hill series to new heights.

Honestly I'm excited for everything that was shown.

My problem is how overwhelming it feels going from having radio silence on the franchise for years to having 3.5 games of contrasting styles announced at once.

And there's still ONE MORE game that hasn't been officially announced yet.
One more game? Source?

James' new face looks strange to the point where it was distracting to me but the remake looks okay apart from that. Not particulary interested in whatever else they showed. I WAS interested in seeing the OG games dropped on PSN, but it doesn't seem like that's ever happening. I want to play Silent Hill 1 but I'm not about to pay some insane price to get my hands on it which is the only way to play it on a console, too bad.

It's the game that has the Hispanic (?) girl that got leaked ages ago with all the paper notes and cherry blossom monster. Silent Hill f is set in the 1960s in Japan.

It might not be a full game and might just be a demo lead in to f, but I feel like that one is actually 5 / KojiPro

I'll say I don't have the aversion to Bloober that many folks seem to have. I thought Layers of Fear had some interesting ideas. Never played Medium, the Blair Witch game wasn't too bad atmosphere wise. I'm willing to give them a chance under the guiding hands of freaking Ito and Yamaoka, as well as their clear passion for SH 2.

Kojipro is working on DS2 and Overdose, time to face reality bro.

Probably, I don't give a shit what he does but the leaks and rumours as it stands still cite a "prominent Japanese developer" working on a SH title - he still makes sense since it's definitely not the people behind f.

You have to stop listening to what that clown dusk golum says.

I’m glad Konami are producing games again, I hope they can work with some talented teams to revamp Contra and Castlevania.

I always felt PlatinumGames could potentially make a fun Contra game given their work on Vanquish.

Silent Hill F is doing nothing for me. And who the fuck are Neo Bards? Even their own website offers little clue what they have worked on.

Canceling Silent Hills will forever remain one of the dumbest business decisions in the history of game development.

I am one of the biggest SH fans since the day the first one came out and I liked what I saw.

SH2 Remake: yes, it’s blooper team, but their graphics are good and in the scenes they showed everything was 1:1 from the original game, so I think they can make a great game, if they just update the technology but not the story.

Return to SH: I liked the first movie and it seems they stick very closely to the game with the second movie, so could be a really good video game adaption.

Silent Hill f: Who is making the game??? The studio they shown seems to be only a supportive studio in Taiwan…

We still didn’t get the game which a prominent Japanese developer is making. So either a prominent Japanese studio is making Silent Hill f or there is another game… all the rumors said one game is made by a prominent Japanese studio and I believe that this is true.

It's Konami (suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper Japanese company) so I have a feeling we should expect a shit ton of filler bullshit. Guaranteed to have Japanese dudes speaking at length for ages with awkward translations.

Heh. That girl speaks great in both english and japanese.

Thats not silent hill f?

And so does my wife. I is surely not easy to find someone with good English conversation skills in Japan. I work in a big Japanese company and it’s kind of embarrassing that not one of my colleagues can speak English. It’s not a problem for me because I can speak Japanese, but we have to outsource a lot of work to another Japanese company because except me no one can talk directly to oversea companies…

so bitbydeath bitbydeath where was hasan and kojima ?
We still didn’t see the game that is made by a prominent Japanese developer. All rumors reported that much so there must be some truth to it. So I wouldn’t count out Kojima yet. If other rumors are true which says that game s funded by Sony, Sony surely wouldn’t let Konami announce that game in this stream , but would rather announce it at their own event.

So they whored out Silent Hill to all these bum ass developers.
Every single one of those devs mentions 'putting their own spin on the franchise' - but thats why every single SH outside of 1-4 are forgettable junk. No one outside of Team Silent understands the franchise - and never will.
Why do the characters models of the SH2 remake look worse than the original?
Fuck all of that shit.

The only thing worth looking forward to is Gans' second crack at the film. The first was respectable with some bad bits - I would hope having 15+ years to reflect and learn from the hiccups would improve the next film.

What happened to this? Looks NOTHING like what was shown today. (Not even Silent Hill F which looks like it takes place in asia)

I believe that this is the one from the prominent Japanese developer (since tge text is in Japanese / perhaps even Kojima)

That game might be Sony funded as some rumors said and if that’s the case it’s likely Sony is saving this one for one of their own events…

It’s also worth noting that the Japanese letter mention the name: Christa Neumann, which is further proof that this one is not set in Japan.
The letter itself is about a childcare affair, it seems one party wants to sue the other party if no solution is found.

Too early to say but the SH2 remake looks good to me. If Bloober can pull off what Capcom did with the RE2 remake then they have a winner.

Also... Silent Hill F looks interesting but for obvious reasons reminds me of Ghostwire Tokyo.

Still wish we could've had the Kojima remake. If you think about all the weird shit he pulled off with MGS1 and MGS2 (which weren't even horror games), it's clear that he's actually right at home in the genre. But yeah it's most likely long gone.

Silent Hill was born on Playstation and see success and PS1 and PS2, it was where the franchise success was, stop crying.
Pointing the things people make on their mind to try to convince other people about their views is not crying.
Notice that I never questioned this being a PlayStation exclusive.

That comment was only trying to point out the hypocrisy of all the posters who say Sony involvement in developing third party games is bigger than it is and that's the reason why it's fair to make them exclusive.

Dusk claims that more Silent Hill projects are being worked on, Townfall is the first of a SH 'series' and more indie devs are going to be showing SH projects in the future.

Sounds like Konami is handling Silent Hill the same way WotC is handling Dungeons & Dragons.

I'll give SH f a shot but everything else looks like junk as expected.
Wait a minute, we at least know SH2 is a great game (some have reservations with Bloober but I'm fairly confident they'll do it justice). The new game though we've seen nothing but a pre-rendered trailer so not sure why you're giving that a shot over the other titles.

If they lock 30fps on this looking like that then we have a proper next generation looking game. It certainly looks better than Resident Evil 4 remake.

Perhaps I am going too deep inside the rabbit hole, but…
E0u8oat.jpg
if made by Kojima, it would probably be a 1st-person PSVR2 game [akin to P.T.] developed to showcase PSVR2 capabilities
and it would look insane in Decima
I believe the cloud game he's collaborating with MS for is not his horror title OVERDOSE
you know how it is with Kojima, he always gives us the runaround. The man enjoys a good surprise and works hard for it. I wouldn't even be surprised if Del Toro is involved

TGA will be the time and the place to find out

So anyone excited for the new movie? Was it me or does it look like it’s almost a sequel to the first film and they are ignoring the sequel?
