Being by myself this Xmas for the first time I. 6 years put me in a spiral there and I might have drunkenly purchased an OLED Sony TV.

Anyone else have the BRAVIA XR OLED XR55A80J? Just wondering what I should expect.

A great TV with top tier image quality but subpar gaming features.

I have it, its really good. Better picture than the LGs imo, but I dont use it for gaming anymore. The gaming features are decent anyway and you really wont miss much if any at all

What you mean subpar gaming features?

Aggressive auto-dimming when static elements are on screen (anything HUD related) with no way to turn that "feature" off. 1440p not natively supported and higher input lag.

If you don't care about those things then you've got a great TV (better than anything LG can produce for uses outside of gaming especially) but if you do then LG is worth looking in to.

Not fussed on 1440p but that auto dimming sounds annoying more than anything else.

All OLEDs have auto dimming, some more aggressive than others but it comes with the tech. Its a measure to prevent burn in and prolong its lifespan. They dont give you a "legit" way to turn it off, neither lg sony or samsung do. On samsung and LG you can disable it totally using secret service menus that may or may not void your warranty.

Diablo 4 is nearly unplayable on LG's OLED's. The drab monotone color and lighting triggers these features very frequently and consistently.

This is a Russian website. I felt it’s safer to buy a remote
Just because it’s Russian doesn’t mean it doesn’t work and the site just sends the same remote command through the browser.

My C1 77” experience has been miles better than what LG offers since I’ve rooted the TV, from YouTube AdFree, homebrew and a AdFree Home Screen.

Blocking the advertising has even made the tv faster at various task.

You have to give the app root access.
Remote is 9$

None except uniformity, the general consensus is that it's easier to find clean, uniform panel in the size of 55" and below than 65"-77". If you're picky about uniformity then 83" should be avoided as they're much worse than any other size, all of them have a noticeable (even on brighter backgrounds like blue skies) vertical band in the middle of the screen and in general super strong vertical banding. Seeing many photos of 83" panels on avsforum/avforums I haven't seen a single one that wasn't looking like trash.

I'm talking about LG OLED panels here but with LCDs it's similar, the bigger you go it may be harder to find uniform panel.

The service menu does not require root though it’s free.

YouTube AdFree doesn’t require root.
Neither does the Homebrew channel.

These can be added with a LG developer account which is simple and free to sign up for. It’s completely safe and can be restored with simply deleting the apps.

Have you installed the latest lg tv update 03.34.70 for your c1?

Yup and Root works.
Its doesn't for me, I updated and my homebrew icon went with all other apps. I tried the site rootmytv2, but it didn't work. I read somewhere saying that we will have to wait for rootmytv 3. I did find the Russian site where I managed to get the YouTube app installed. That's all I really wanted.

Now after seeing your home screen ad free, I wouldn't mind that. How did you root your TV after the update?

I rooted on 3.34.55 using a manual method then updated to 3.34.70 and there is a special way to update the Homebrew channel by using the channel updater app, the orange icon.

This is the AdBlock method for Home.

And this is the Manual Root / Hombrew steps that I used from GitHub

  1. Enable Developer Mode: See this guide from LG. If you have trouble (e.g., not getting the prompt to sign in), try rebooting. A reboot is required after setting Dev Mode Status to ON. The Developer Mode app should look something like this:
    Developer Mode app
  2. Download Software:
    a. WebOS-Dev-Manager
    b. PuTTY
    c. Homebrew Channel IPK (Latest version, currently 0.6.3)
  3. Disable Quick Start+. This is in the menu, but its exact location depends on the webOS version. For example, on webOS 5, after pressing the menu button on the remote, it can be found in All Settings > General > Additional Settings. On webOS 6, it is under All Settings > General > Devices > TV Management.
  4. Reboot the TV (e.g., by turning it off and then back on) again. This is in addition to the reboot required when enabling developer mode. Make sure Quick Start+ is disabled!
Note: If you have an OLED TV, it may stay on for a while (to run the Pixel Refresher) despite appearing to be off. Thus, when you turn it back on, it won't have actually rebooted. You can unplug it to be sure it's off.
  5. In the LG Developer Mode app, enable the Key Server. It should look like this:
    Key Server enabled
  6. In Dev Manager, perform these steps:
    a. Click "+ Add Device"
    b. Enter IP address of your TV in "Host Address" field
    c. Enter passphrase displayed on LG Developer Mode app in "Passphrase" field
    d. Keep other settings at default, click "Add"
    e. Click "Install" in the top right corner
    f. Choose Homebrew Channel IPK
    g. Make sure Homebrew Channel is installed on your TV
    h. Click on "Terminal"
    i. Input this command into the terminal prompt ("Input command here"), then press enter:
    echo lol>/media/developer/jail_app.conf
Hint: You can copy and paste commands into recent versions of Dev Manager.
There will be no output if the command is successful.
If you are typing these commands by hand, the shorter echo>jail_app.conf should also work as long as you are still in the default /media/developer directory.
  7. Reboot the TV (e.g., by turning it off and then back on) for a third time. Make sure Quick Start+ is disabled!
  8. In Dev Manager, go to "Terminal" and input this command EXACTLY, then press enter:
    touch /var/log/crashd/"x;telnetd -l sh"
Note: The character after the dash is a lowercase L, not a one.
If you get an error like sh: touch: not found, just repeat the command. When successful there should be no output.
If you get a "Permission denied" error, you probably didn't complete the previous steps regarding jail_app.confcorrectly or did not reboot afterward.
  9. In PuTTY perform these steps:
    a. Type your TV's IP address in "Host Name" field
    b. Validate that "Other" and "Telnet" are selected under "Connection type"
    image
Note: The default port of 23 is correct.
    c. Open the telnet connection to your TV
    d. Execute this to give root permissions to Homebrew Channel (you can paste into PuTTY by right clicking or pressing Shift+Insert):
    /media/developer/apps/usr/palm/services/org.webosbrew.hbchannel.service/elevate-service
    e. Execute this command to ensure developer mode does not expire after 48 hours:
    rm -rf /var/luna/preferences/devmode_enabled && mkdir -p /var/luna/preferences/devmode_enabled
    f. If you have used RootMyTV before (even unsuccessfully), execute this command to remove leftover files:
    rm /var/lib/webosbrew/startup.sh /mnt/lg/cmn_data/wam/extra_conf.sh
  10. Uninstall developer mode app from TV home menu.
WARNING: Do NOT reinstall the LG Developer Mode app while your TV is rooted!
  11. Power off your TV. Make sure Quick Start+ is disabled!
Note: If an "Install Homebrew Channel" prompt appears (unlikely), don't choose "yes".
  12. After restart, confirm that "Root status" in Homebrew Channel is "ok"
  13. Turn on SSH in Homebrew Channel and restart
  14. Enjoy your rooted TV!

[UPDATED 2022.12.01 to add the local touch /var/log/crashd/"x;telnetd -l sh" alternate method]

Confirmed that it worked for me on an OLED CX with firmware 04.40.20.

Here is a rewriting of the guide linked by @cowl0ver above, with some slight clarifications for items I had trouble with as well as an alternative local method to run the "crashd exploit":

  1. Get developer mode by registering an account here.
It is possible that you may have be forced to use a mail using a .com domain for registration to work (e.g. gmail.com). You will have to accept a bunch of agreements... which you won't read.
  2. Install the ThinQ App on a mobile device, and log onto it using your developer account. This is needed because LG stupidly forces you to go through this step to accept extra licenses, before you can log on to developer account on the TV. Why they can't just produce the additional licenses on the TV, or with the initial registration, and make you accept them there is beyond me!
  3. On the TV (for CX models), go to All SettingsGeneralAdditional Settings and set Quick Start+ to disabled. This is needed to ensure that the TV goes through a complete reboot when requested.
  4. Install the Developer Mode App from the LG Content Store on the TV and validate that you can log in to your
developer account (if you didn't do step 2, you may find that it won't let you, so please do that).
Take a note of the IP address and passphrase and, on the left handside, enable Dev Mode Status and Key Server as shown in the picture below, as Dev Manager won't be able to connect to the TV otherwise:
    04_Key_Server_On
  5. Install the latest Dev Manager on a PC and launch it.
Click the Add Device button in Options and fill in the fields Host (with the IP address and Passphrase you got from the TV).
  6. In Dev Manager, install the Homebrew Channel 0.5.1 application (that should be listed in the main window) onto the TV.
    • METHOD 1 (Recommended, as this is the one from the official #rootmytv Discord channel):
      • Still in Dev Manager, click on "terminal"
      • Type the following command then press enter:
        touch /var/log/crashd/"x;telnetd -l sh"
    • METHOD 2 (If the above doesn't work. This requires running external code from a remote server, which is always a potential security risk):
      • On the TV, launch Homebrew Channel (which you will now see in the LG App bar).
      • Click the "Settings" gear icon and select Add repository. Enter https://repo.webosapp.club as a new repository.
      • Go back to the main Homebrew Channel, you should now see a Run telnet/root.telnet application in the list of apps proposed
      • Run root.telnet from the repository.
Either of the above will run the "crashd exploit" and start a telnet server with root access on the TV.

8. Connect to the TV via telnet (port 23) using the same IP address as the one you use previously and enter the following commands exactly (Don't worry if you see library warnings being reported when running the commands, the commands are still being executed fine):

9. IMPORTANT: On the TV, delete the Developer Mode app. You must do this or else, as @Merri1 commented below, ssh will not work.

10. In telnet type reboot to reboot the TV.

11. Once the TV has rebooted, go to Homebrew channel again, and click the settings gear icon. You should see a greyed out Root status ok indicating that Homebrew channel has root access. Now you can enable the SSH Server by toggling its switch. Once you have done that, click the System reboot paragraph of text (bottom left) to reboot the TV.

12. From now on, an ssh server with root access will be enabled every time you start the TV. 😄
You can SSH into your TV using the username root and password alpine on port 22 (default SSH port).

13. After this, you can turn on Quick Start+ again if you wish and set other Homebrew channel settings as needed.

Many thanks. I don't think this will work as ever since lg updated the lg dev mode app(which it forced me to update) I cannot get dev manger to connect with the TV anymore.

The Dev Manager app isn’t from LG it’s a GitHub project and you can try different versions to get compatibility. Just make sure you can see the TV and computer is on the same network and you follow instructions carefully.

For me I had my TV wired to the network and my computer wireless.

Thought it would be nice for OLED owners or would be buyers to have a chat. I myself just bought a LG OLED 65 E9 £2099 with 24 months interest free finance.

First new tv in 10 years whooo
I have a 42" LG C2 for my main pc monitor and a 65" Samsung S95b Qd OLED. The Samsung is nice but I think the LG is nicer. The saturation on the Samsung is unnatural but its still a great tv. I need to calibrate it still.

I did it with my C9 yesterday, and damm, much better now. Not only it doesnt dimm the image, but also the TV is brighter overall ( i didnt know that the image would still dimm a little even with the Logo Luminance setting turned off).

Maybe because gsr always detects static elements and dim the whole screen?
My remote comes today

I know the dev manager app is not from lg. I'm talking about the lg dev mode app you get the passphrase from. Ever since I updated that I have not been able to connect my pc to TV through the GitHub dev manager. Before the lg tv developer mode app update I could connect and install apps no problem..

my CX has a lot of dead pixels now :messenger_downcast_sweat: it's 2.5 years old and as you can see only 934 hours usage (at time of photo which was last week). well, it's a bit higher than that because i accidentally reset my tv after getting instop and instart mixed up lol. it's probably about 970 hours.

luckily all the dead pixels are near the edges of the screen and i can't notice them due to the distance i sit away from the TV. in the bottom photo you can see that the corner has a lot of dead pixels which make the corner look rounded. i always knew i had 2 dead pixels but was shocked to see this recently.

i do have a warranty on the TV until late 2025. the store i bought it from has standard 5 year warranty but i bought the optional 5 year warranty for accidental damage/burn in etc. since the dead pixels don't affect my enjoyment of the TV i'm not gonna do anything about it just yet. i'll probably wait another couple years before getting in touch with the insurance company....unless things get worse in the meantime.

what would the insurance company do if i did contact them? I rarely ever buy insurance and have never had to deal with an insurance company (outside my car lol). do they hire someone to repair it or would they just replace it with a like for like model? i mean say i contact them today....you can't buy new CX models so would they give me a C2? Again, I'm quite happy with my TV and don't want to replace it right now. It works perfectly fine.

That’s too many dead pixels. File that claim immediately, Insurance would replace it with a C2 most likely.

For others outside warranty, LG has a complimentary panel replacement program, customer service will look up the service policy and all you pay is $238/ $138 if you drive it to them for the labor.

Is there still no way to keep my C1 from auto switching to the horrible game mode audio preset every time I turn on my ps5?.

For some reason when I put the Ps5 in rest mode the TV seems to remember my audio settings. But if I turn it off it will automatically switch back to game mode audio the next time I turn it on.

Is there no universal "don't fucking change my settings" toggle?

I miss my c1. Got it last year after horizon came out. Elden ring was a real treat on it.

Moved and couldn't fit it in the car so it's in storage now

I hadn't found it before I left. I just ended up switching between the presets cause I was using just the TV speakers, which is something I should fix

For you guys that probably researched this a lot, what would be a better buy for gaming, mostly, and some Netflix, Disney+, HBO+ and the like?
A 55 C1 or a 48 C2?
Both are at the same price here and if isn't any meaningfull advantage for the C2, mostly gaming wise, I would choose a 55" over a 48" any day.
Is the burn-in 'problem' any better on the C2? If the burn in is a bigger problem on the C1 than the C2, then I would choose the C2, even if gaming wise both are equal and the C1 is bigger.
Thank you guys for the help.

The bigger the better, they actually removed BFI@120Hz on the C2 so go for the biggest your space and wallet can afford.

From the article;

Does this mean that everyone should avoid QD-OLED displays? Probably not. Our test is an extreme case. Two months of runtime on our test is the equivalent of watching about four hours of CNN per day, for about eight months, without ever changing channels or watching anything else. As long you watch varied content and don't leave static elements visible on the screen for long periods, you shouldn't have any issues.

This doesn't prove your point tho, so I'm not sure why you are quoting it. Spend your money how you choose just don't be surprised if your Sony or Samsung televisions have issues.
