Hellblade 2 gets new look at GDC 2023

cinematics is where this'll really shine, but im reaaaaally losing patience with cinematics...

cinematics were amazing ala MGS2, but these days, they usually just get in the way.
let me play the damn game already.

bro its a graphics convention not E3

they haven't shown a single minute of actual gameplay yet tho, and the "gameplay" that they did show was one of those "cIneMAtiC" moments where player agency is -100 and it could as well be a cutscene (and should be one tbh)

so them once again releasing a video, and not showing gameplay is just a joke.
last month or so they made a fucking video about how they scanned the fucking environment, as if that's in any way important info...

they didn't. they showed a cutscene followed by what they claimed to be gameplay... which I honestly still hope was a lie, because that's the kind of "gameplay" that's hopefully about to fucking die a painful death

Okay, so they released a video called "Hellblade II - Gameplay Reveal", that showed in-game footage, but your tin-foil hat conspiratorial ass decided they must be lying for some reason.

Gotcha.

no, I am afraid that they are telling the truth... I hope they are lying and that that video was just a design target and not actual gameplay.
because if that was gameplay, then fuck that game 🤷

Comments like this and "overacting" complaints make me wonder if the people complianing have ever played the first game, she has psychosis and mental issues, that's why she acts like this.

First game had similar acting and was praised by everyone

the issue has more to do with the fact that the mouth movements look unrealistic still, they look overly smoothed, combined with the overacting this results in it looking done over the top by the actor because she thinks she has to compensate for the motion tracking.

that's something that's very common in motion capure performances imo.

Well yeah, but to be honest it was the game equivalent of "Oscar bait", or I guess "Bafta bait" being British. Plucky, upstart studio comes (mostly) out of nowhere with small game with big ideas; "Damaged" female heroine, and "serious" approach to mental illness to make it seem worthy.

Problem they have with the sequel is that its clearly had a load more time and money spent on it, and so it runs the risk of disappointing newcomers who think its going to be some sort of God Of War deal, or conversely coming across as a sell-out for those who enjoyed the original's more quirky approach. I suspect it might be tricky pleasing both camps, especially after all these years of hype.

~4 years since announcement. From one emotional head to another. I think the issue here is they can't lock down a look for Senua.

The first game was a PlayStation exclusive for a good bit of time, as soon as it wasn't it was mid at best.

you mean walking around linear paths looking for shapes, followed by the most basic combat imaginable, and then repeat until the end lol.

they had gameplay concepts for a 20 minute long game and then just stretched that out for hours 🤣
Okay, so you didn't enjoy it; that's you. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed everything about Hellblade 1. It is in my top games of all time; it completely moved me. No other game, to date, has affected me emotionally, as Hellblade did.

Did you play the first game? Have you seen the actor talk, expressively? She has big gums, naturally. Senua is a very intense person; her acting here is exactly what we got with the first game. An intense character who suffers from extreme psychosis and schizophrenia. You're getting exactly what she's supposed to be.

That said... Yes, there's something about her mouth movements that seem a little uncanny. I think, because everything else is so realistic and so well done...so close to reality, our eyes quickly pick-up when something is...off/odd, even if we can't quite put our fingers on it, or explain it. We're so accustomed to real life, that when something comes very close, but isn't 100%, it can be even more off-putting/uncanny than a game that looks like...well, a game.

I mean I liked it enough to finish it I guess, but in terms of gamedesign it was pure ass... it helped that it wasn't too long... and the combat was good enough to be 1 of many elements in a game, but not good enough to be basically the main and only game mechanic it has.

you can absolutely tell the game had a super small budget and that they literally had no gameplay material beyond a tech demo, and then stretched that out.

it's not the acting alone like I said , it's the combination of this type of acting and the clearly still remaining issues with motion captureing faces.

if you have this type of acting with noticeable smoothing, it just gives across a "I better exaggerate a bit so it gets captured correctly" kinda feel.

Looks great of course, but it didn't look anywhere near as good as that in the gameplay vertical slice shown over a year ago.

Maybe ... just maybe... it will end up looking better but I'd err on the side of "bullshit" until we see it looking that good in actual gameplay (not just Senua in a dark room, literally just her head).

I think the changes are great. The first one in 2019 felt like a bullshot. 2022 looked like a big downgrade to me, but the new update in 2023 brings it more in line with the 2019 footage but you can tell it's more representative of in-engine stuff they can deliver and it looks amazing.

They are showing the same person with some issues screaming in the camera for several years now, but with a engine and tool everyone can use. I compare it with Quantic Dream which was using in-house tech.

Respectfully, Quantic Dreams games don't even have gameplay.
They are literally all the actual things people tried to say about the Hellblade 2 gameplay demo to justify how good it looked ("it's just QTE..its just a cutscene..you're just walking!").
Quantic Dreams games are just a series of prompts to trigger subsequent scenes of a literal digital motion picture.
They even admitted, they can't use their engine for Star Wars Eclipse because some actual gameplay (action) will be required.

But since it's UE and Metahuman, it's not that impressive anymore when every capable studio can easily create this.

Whatever makes you feel better, buddy. :)

When you have time, give us a list of all those capable studios using UE5 that are getting Ninja Theory's results.
Don't worry, we'll wait.

You waltzed in here acting like you're smarter than everyone, I think that's part of the problem. Also, we've seen NT's capabilities in the gameplay reveal, that's also a part of why you should dial back on the condescending attitude.
I'm not trying to do anything, except take a moment to point out how ridiculous it is for people to think you're salty if you're not impressed with a CGI trailer.

I dont know what Ninja Theory is capable of outside of Unreal Engine CGI and Hellblade 1. Need to see some real gameplay.

Pretty obvious that it'll visually look like the 2022 gif, which is totally fine. I'm not expecting Hellblade 2 (or any other game this gen for that matter) to look as good in-game as the 2023 gif.

You're right though, they're all over the place. If they don't show anything meaningful at the summer Xbox showcase then I'll assume it isn't coming out for a long time.

Also what is it with some people here that have a sort of cult-like devotion to believing Hellblade 2 will look like this after the countless downgrades we've seen to all sorts of games. Did people forget about Killzone 2? Remember how everyone said "oh shit looks amazing" and then it ended up looking great but nowhere near what they showed? Killzone 2 was a good-looking game in its own right and they soiled it with that bullshit CGI reveal.

Expecting it to look like the 2023 gif is just setting your self up for disappointment.

So just like gorilla did with forbidden west.

The gameplay from last year looked phenomenal to me as well. But this face stuff is a level above what was shown there - frankly the last demo still looks better than anything we currently have.

Only thing is I don’t like these type of cinematic games where it’s like a heavy rain type experience - is that what this is?

which turned out to be a boring snoozfest Ubisoft clone just like the first game, slightly less boring maybe... only that they apparently stole the source code for the pre-alpha version of the parcour system of Assassin's Creed 1 and just ran with it lol
Perfect example of great graphics, yet a poor game. Hopefully hellblade isn’t the same.

the first one was... and the only good game they ever made was DmC, which was made with the help of Capcom and by using an existing game as a template...
so I am very skeptical with anything they make.

honestly, Bleeding Edge might be the best game they ever made on their own, and that was meh at best.

Have you tried it in VR?
I started it yesterday, there are no motion controls but you have a 360 degree head tracking camera and can lean around etc. I think I want that for all third person games now. MS needs to enter VR.

I am ready for a ton of close ups of faces.
I guess its one of the games where the technology is more interesting than the game itself

If they did that, they'd spoil the entire game. lol

The first game was probably half unskippable cut scenes.
Obviously the reason no one wants to see gameplay videos of games right
