I don't know what to think of Marathon.
I played the OG game on Mac in the 90s and it wasn't very good. The gameplay was nothing compared to Doom and it seemed the draw of the game was to go around reading terminals endlessly.
Nowadays Bungie's are right up there with iD for actually being experts at shooter gameplay, so that won't be a problem... but.. what even is the game they are creating? Is it a multiplayer GAAS thing in the Marathon "universe" or is it a single-player game? Would really rather see a new IP as Marathon was pretty Halo-y, and so is Destiny.

D and I'm thinking I'm being generous. I went in looking for reasons to buy a PS5 other than FFXVI and Spider-Man 2 and got very little. Both looked amazing but I expected ALOT more from the showcase. I think I'm just gonna stick with my Series S to play Diablo 4 and wait til mid gen consoles get announced next year? Such a disappointment. As a whole, this entire generation has blown so far imo.

Please. This was the big comeback showcase, meant to kickstart the next stage of PlayStation. The fact they had nothing to show from first party 2024 releases speaks volumes.
If it was well along in development, they’d have shown it. Something is fucked at Sony first party.

Big D for me. A few things that got my reaction I already knew were coming, so it didn't feel too exciting. But kept it from an F for me. A lot of the "new" stuff looked.... not great, lol. The entire show was underwhelming, at every 10 minute mark I looked at the time hoping it'd pick up, but it never did.

Yep. Herman took over in 2019. Jimbo in 2018. It was Shuhei and Andrew House before that.
These two buffoons are coasting on the success of Shu who built an amazing portfolio of GOTY winning first party games that produced GOTYs in 2013, 2016, 2018,2019 and 2020. Even 2015 had BB which was all Shu as he realized his mistake with Demon Souls and gave Myzaki a blank check and a Japan studio to go do what he wanted.
These guys have gone and created a dozen fornite clones. Just trash after trash. They cant put out a next gen game to save their lives. They let Neil go off and make a show for TWO fucking years while his studio wasted time on a LAST gen remake.
They had Bend waste 2 years on pitching uncharted and days gone 2. its been four years since days gone came out and all we have from Bend is a logo.
It's been 3 years since TLOU2 came out and Neil is busy shooting blowjob scenes on HBO.
Its been 3 years since Ghost of Tushima came out and we have nothing from Sucker punch.
its been 3.5 years since Death stranding came out and still no gameplay from a guy who made DS1 from scratch in 3.5 years.
Even EA has better management with Dead Space and Star Wars taking 3.5 years to make. Herman cant even produce a realtime trailer for any of his games. You replace Shu with this lazy moron?

AC Mirage looks wonderful, I'm an AC fan.
MGS is massive news, one of the most beloved games to me.
Spiderman 2 looks overhauled and intruiging.
FF16 looks amazing
Alan Wake 2 looks scary and spooky, amazing shit
Phantom Blade Zero looks so good
Marathon looks strange, interested.
Skipping some other good games, what else should we ask for? Fake "disappointment" isn't for me. 10/10 is kinda low.

Yes the phase 2 we are back after almost two years and it will be insane, maybe it was a joke and they will upload the real showcase tomorrow. I hope so at least.

What fucks are given about multiplats? Bungie is a first party PS Studio and made mutliplats, same with Firewalks albeit no xbox.

So despite some really good games, I rate it an F due to shocking piss poor first-party presence and somehow no mention of TLOU online, WTF??? Which, at an hour-long showcase event, first time in 2 years, is straight-up embarrassing.
Also, Spiderman 2 looked like if you told me it's a DLC for Miles (there, I said it) I would believe you.

Every year since PS5 released we have gotten great games.
Did it ever occur to you that outside of the GaaS teasers, Sony didn’t show off a single 2024 SP game? Why? Well maybe because they don’t have to.
If 2024 ends up having zero bangers, then we can start blaming Jimbo and Hermen.
You want to blame anyone for a shitty Sony showcase? Blame Microsoft for not being a big enough competitive threat for Sony to feel like they have to reveal their hand early.
This is just the new Sony MO, sadly. Only show gameplay months before release.

What makes a good showcase I think is surprises. And surprises that make you hyped to play that game.
Phantom Blade and Talos 2 was maybe the only thing that was a pleasant surprise.
Plucky Squire, Dragon's Dogma, FF16. We've already seen these games. And MGS/Spiderman 2 were basically a guarantee.
I'm excited to learn more about some of the games shown, like Marathon, but I'm not excited to play it yet.
Overall I felt "meh" throughout the showcase, nothing made my jaw drop.

Xbox and PS are in similar position right now with their first party games. Only difference is that Sony had steady release and 3rd party games to cover their gaps.
Games are taking 4+ years to make these days. So naughty dog and other studios who released their games in 2029-2020 will have their next title ready in 2024-2025. Especially with COVID affecting early development games during that year.

I gave it a B but after thinking back on it again... i'd prob lower to a C. Wasn't a bad showcase overall but i was expecting more 1st party stuff like Wolverine. When i saw the SM2 Kraven scene i was like hell yeah Wolverine! Nope... Spiderman still looked pretty good though.
TBH i don't really expect Microsoft to have much better of a showing than this... both Sony and MS have been too busy fighting with each other over the Activision acquisition and chasing GaaS crap. Boo.

Decisions made in gaming won't have an effect for 4-5 years, particularly with development. Everything released so far under Hermens watch was started before him
The games we are starting to see from his tenure are looking really poor. All multiplat. All have a certain Guerrilla Games middle of the road stink about them
