Alan Wake 2 Will Be Digital Only - Keep Price at $59.99 for Consoles and $49.99 for PC

I think there will be more and more AAA games doing this over the remaining of this gen. Most Indie and AA games are already digital only anyway.

I think people wanting a disk drive in next gen consoles, well i certainly wouldnt bet money on it.

Its not happening bro. PS6 and Xbox Next or whatever wil not have disk drives. Physical is going the way of the dinosaur.

Digital is the future. Embrace it OR

Is it finally happening? :messenger_beaming:

Thank you Epic for being the first to go all digital. Someone needed to do it. The game trailer didn't interest me but might pick it up to support this change towards an all digital future. Hopefully other publishers see how well it does and decide to ditch physical releases for their own games.

Physical has been dying for a while now but it needs to die completely and for good.

LOL at the people saying they won't buy it. Well don't? But when it starts happening to more games you're gonna need to make a decision: suck it up and step into the future OR give up on gaming.

If you hadn't noticed yet... Sony and Microsoft are preparing people for digital only future. Last gen Xbox released an all digital console. This gen BOTH Xbox and PlayStation released an all digital console and Sony are rumoured to be releasing a PS5 with removable drive as soon as this year. Now, who wants to guess what will happen next gen? It's quite possible that we might get no console with support for playing discs.

There is zero point in buying physical games. It's time we get rid of them.

The game release date hasnt been announced for an hour and it's already DOA
How is it DOA?

Plenty of people will happily buy it digitally and people who really want to play the game won't care if it's digital only. The only people who won't buy it are the ones stuck in 2005 and refuse to accept the future.

You mean their 1 MB cartridges? Ok, maybe not Nintendo first party games, but empty cartridges and physical cases with only a download code is becoming more common.

Remind my old memory, what is the PS5/Series X bluray max capacity space?

We all knew this day would come. As the months and years pass less and less publishers will be willing to spend money on having a disc and box cover printed and shipped to stores.

Epic has an interest in pushing digital only like Steam does. They have a store front. It's also why it's cheaper on PC because it pushes you to their store and offsets the console fee. They want you using their store so they can cut the middle man out.

Releasing both physical and digital is stone age?

LOL. Trying to understand this logic of 'embrace digital'. No advantage whatsoever.

edit: Seeing a pattern here in some posters behavior in this thread. I guess discussion is no use.

These people are half-witted morons who have some sort of vested emotional or monetary interest in digital only and less consumer rights.

Everything will be going digital at some point whether you like it or not.

Don't matter what what I or someone else says. That's the future we're headed towards.

Enjoyed the first but I’ll be waiting until I get this for free now. I’m sure someday it’ll be given away by somebody.

And here we go.. AAA games deciding not to provide physical releases. It won't be Sony and Microsoft to force us into the digital only age but the games themselves! Fuck you Remedy!

Combine the digital only with the race swapping of a character for no other purpose than to virtue signal, and it's real easy to give this game a hard pass.

Basically this. Many don’t realize that it’s an empty disc. That or you’ll need a major huge large day one update because the disc version shipped broken

It’s useless in 2023. Useless.

I’ve got 600 games on Steam. 0% chance I’d want a physical copy for all that. Hell no. Wouldn’t take it for free

Agreed.

100 GB. That's why games like Jedi Survivor was released on a worthless coaster.

Alan Wake 2 looks way better then the first game. Before this trailer, I wrote this game off as some overartsy euro trash, but the trailer gave me hope. I will keep an eye on this one.

"It will flop"

Yeah just like Harry Potter did because REEEEE canceled it.

The fact is that most games are sold digitally and physical sales are minority today. If the game is good it will sell.

Physical still accounts for a large portion of new release sales, with no option people will download, but it will hurt sales.

Terrible. Published by Epic, this is not a small indie company.

Epic are the ones who should be blamed for this decision, I don't think Remedy wanted to go all-digital since all of their previous games had physical releases (including AW1 remaster).

Jedi Survivor could've been easily released on 2 discs like Cyberpunk or FF7R. It was merely cost-cutting from EA combined with the build not being ready for launch.

Never liked alan wake that much but this one looks interesting with the masked crazy people.

Graphically it was the best of the show but hardly mindblowing.

You say that like you know more about how products sell than the people selling them.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but nobody I play with cares about physical now. Around here, a fair number of people care, sure, but I'm not sure that's reflected in the wider world. I think the damage that not having a physical release will have is likely minimal, because at least some physical sales won't be from people taking a stand against digital only releases.

Yess! Finally someone gets what I have been saying all the time: Having only digital games in the loop prevents resales and allows for lower digital prices.

I guess this may be a first market test subsidized by Sony and others to monitor what happens if they go all digital

WTF, Remedy? Why there's no disc versions? Jesus fuckin' Christ... It means there's no way for me to buy the game for PS5 cuz I don't want to deal with VPNs and other BS and I'm not buying digital games for consoles ever and never will. EGS is simply not an option out of principle.

Why is Alan Wake 2 a digital-only release?

There are many reasons for this. For one, a large number of have shifted to digital only. You can buy a Sony PlayStation 5 without a disc drive and Microsoft’s Xbox Series S is a digital only console. It is not uncommon to release modern games as digital-only.

Secondly, not releasing a disc helps keep the price of the game at $59.99 / €59.99 and the PC version at $49.99 / €49.99.

Finally, we did not want to ship a disc product and have it require a download for the game — we do not think this would make for a great experience either.
None of this is a valid reasons to abandon physical releases. Since when having a box, a cover and a disc is the reasons why new games are $70 now? PC don't need physical release so fuck it, but consoles do need them cuz there's a lot of people still buying physical versions.

Come the fuck on, man...

Didn't realise the series had moved to Epic for PC publishing rights. Ah well. I've been digital on pc and console for ages now. Good to see it's only £40 on PC

I'm OK with digital on PC and I've been OK with that for a decade. On consoles you're kinda locked in as there are no guarantees.

To all the people complaining about EGS only on PC....

did you guys just somehow miss that Epic is publishing this game?

Is half-life Alyx in the epic store... I swear is stuff like this that makes me worry that maybe the majority of GAF are really the ones that are becoming out of touch.

And o the digital on release... I swear I don't get gamers.... PC gamers have been digital only for almost two decades now. And now, a publisher, a PC-centric publisher mind you, releases a game digitally, but actually does something that a lot of us here have been asking for, make the launch price of digital games cost less than what a disc game costs... and here we are complaining?

wtf am I seeing...?

I wish more studios do what Epic has done.... and this begs the question if every game did this, but also had a $10 more expensive physical game... how many people would really be buying that physical game over the digital one?

Awesome news actually. Wow. A studio trying something fucking new.

Also, easily the best lookin game of the show.

Plot twist: we saw the whole game.

This being a "straight to dvd" equivalent doesn't fill me with confidence.

Anyone pre-ordering this is a brave soul.

2003? When most of the big name western developers didn't release broken unfinished 100 GB plus maybe another 100 GB for patches or dlc games and still made quality games? Yeah I'd go back to that.

Sorry to break it to you, but games aren't going down in sizes since they're getting more complex these days with motion capture for one example. And we have something called 4K TVs now and you can have a look at the file sizes of movies in 4K etc. Yeah storage sizes for games ain't going down bro. Fact.

But hey you can keep yourself to the next Ori game, or Tunic cause that's what you're saying indirectly you want. I'm sure there are games out there with less then 10gb space, but yeah, they're not gonna be AAA games prolly so you really don't have anything to complaing about with your logic. You certainly shouldn't even be commenting on this thread if you think Alan Wake 2 looks like it can run on less then 10 gigs or whatever.
