Playstation Portal reviews

You wouldn't need profiles on the PSP, it connects to your PS5 as if it is a second screen. There is nothing saved on the device, its just a screen for remote play.
It uses the profile that placed it in rest mode doesn't it?

So I think the question is, can you switch accounts via Remote Play?

Edit: sorry, you already answered

It’s literally the only thing it can do for no reason. Its hardware is able to but can’t access PS5 media app or cloud streaming. Actually, I am going to push for it to never get updated for PS cloud streaming or app support since that’s what some of you guys want.
So what you are saying is, you hate and want to destroy an inanimate object that does not in any way hurt or harm you (other than psychologically, obviously), your friends, family or relatives?

And how are you going to push for it? Petition your government? Send a strongly worded email to Sony support? Picket outside PlayStation offices? Buy one and smash it in a YouTube video? Or just have a whinge on Neogaf?

Seriously, for your own sanity, just accept what it is and what it isn't and relax, you'll feel much better for it.

It’s just like the dualsense edge which is widely known to be an amazing controller , whilst niche and for people really into the ecosystem it sold out all over the place and I see multiple YouTubers who hated on it now using it over their Xbox elites on PC.

This is just like that, niche for people deep in the ecosystem, it serves a very specific purpose very well , I’m here for it.

Using RP on steam deck, phone, ally or computer is cumbersome and you are always compromising on something whether it’s screen size , aspect ratio, comfort.

This is addressing literally all of those issues and adds support for the link buds natively.

Stop whinging that it isn’t something but never was.

This will be sold out everywhere and is shit hot for Xmas , gonna cry?

Anyway mines 30 mins away Apparantly!

Despite some misgivings I have about the device, I have ordered one. On my way to pick it up from Mediamarkt now.

Spot on, it's still sold out in the UK (They did have stock at Direct for a short while but those are gone now apparently), mine is still at my local depot annoyingly.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch

i don’t think it needs my help to get destroyed.

I already accepted what it is; a $200 device that can only do remote play for 1 platform with haptic feedback and adaptive trigger, in a world where competitors like a $200 Abxylute can do remote play for multiple consoles / cloud platforms, media playback, bluetooth and much more

Just arrived from DPD in UK,
Initial impressions, well its a beautiful little device, it has its own menu music!

The screen is absolutely gorgeous and it feels absolutely brilliant to hold, just updating and will give a few games a go, but initially the feel and the experience is like a deluxe vita, it cant be overstated how good the screen and comfort is.

I have the ABYXlute, its a peice of shit, the stick nubs are the same as the switch ones and the UI hangs and is slow.
Has no haptics and the rumble feels pathetic.

Interesting that you completely ignore positive posts from people like TheTony316, I guess you have decided its crap, you should probably move along just so you don't waste any more time on it.

I didn't read 8 pages of posts, not that I needed to to have my own standards, which I must apologize for being apparently too high for this kind of device thanks to *checks notes* Wii U from 2012

Important before you say its too laggy when home:

1. Enable UPnP in your router.
2. Check that your PS5 is in the same local network as your other devices.
3. Try RP from your phone. While connecting it will say something like "looking for lcoal device". If it can't find a local device the message will change to "looking over the internet". If it says that when both your phone and PS5 are connected to the same router at home, something is wrong with your network.

Still can't believe this piece of shit is real in 2023 :messenger_tears_of_joy:

None of it makes any fucking sense. I've bought most every gaming handheld since the 80's, every single one was bought to be taken out and about. This thing, you need 5Mbps wherever you go AND need your PS5 on at home?

What even, why though?

Can it be hacked is the only sensible question at this point.

Maybe I'm too old, maybe not. No, this shit would still bug me in my twenties. I just don't get it!

It's so pointless! Sony should be up there with Valve and Nintendo in the handheld space, they had an excellent handheld with the Vita for christ sake, not doing this pointless shit.

Utter waste of material, money and time.

People need to understand that this is just an optional PS5 accessory. It's not meant to compete with dedicated handhelds.

Yeh, on my hub I can see what devices are connected and which are using UPnP. What I found with the Remote Play app on my phone was the first time I connected it it used the internet rather than my local network, checked my router and the phone did show up, I disconnected the Remote Play app and reconnected it and the second time it used the network rather than the internet. I think thats more of a network/router issue the first time I used it but now all is good.

Just answering your question.

You asked why you always need 5mbps and a PS5 for a Remote Play device.
No worries at all. No I meant it makes it an utterly pointless portable. Most places out and about don't have anywhere near 5Mbps, so it makes the handheld a weighty paper weight whilst you're on your travels.

For £200, you may as well get a Switch lite. Look around enough and for that price you could probably get a few games thrown in too. I've seen them for as cheap as £90 here.

Sony made one of my favourite handhelds (Vita), to see them waste time on this is quite saddening it has to be said. Obviously, and has been seen in the thread, a few folks will buy it and swear by it but this thing is dead in the water.

Your point makes no sense.

It's a Remote Play device that does Remote Play as intended.

What are you prattling on about? You’ve known since it was announced it’s a remote play device if you want to play Sony games locally on a handheld get a steam deck for 350 or an Ally for 700 and get their Pc releases.

Its not for you. That's fine. But not being able to image a use-case for this device is clearly disingenuous. I don't think your that stupid. Its just shitposting for shits and giggles. A lot in here do.
Not really. It plays PS5 games via your home network from a PS5 that needs to be on constantly...

Just play the PS5!

It also needs to be stated that we were also meant to be in an 'energy' crisis?

Yet here we are with a useless item, wasting plastic and electricity for no reason whatsoever that you cant even use most of the time on your travels.

Has anyone phoned Just stop oil?

Of course most of what's posted here is for shits and giggles, it's a forum that doesnt take itself too seriously and thank god for that in this day and age.

And your wrong. I am stupid.

Even if every other outlet except for PC Mag says its great, with some saying its the best LCD on any handheld they have used?

I get it, OLED is better (for the most part, OLED still has its issues, especially cheap ones), but its also more costly. (dont be surprised if a Pro version of this comes out in the next 12 months with OLED and some other features)

Yes what you say is true. It’s still the biggest negative about the device for me personally but it won’t stop me buying it. I appreciate that it may be the best LCD on a handheld so at least it has a good one as far as LCDs go. Unfortunately even a good one will be significantly worse than an OLED like the Switch’s OLED. So I’m still not very happy about it. But it still won’t stop me buying it.

You mean to tell me you can't imagine a use-case where the TV that has the Ps5 hooked on to is occupied? You clearly don't have a wife and kids.

Got mine. Been playing for about an hour or so.

It’s ok. Screen and design are excellent but I’m afraid to say it does have that general streaming sluggishness.

I’ll tweak the settings but largely underwhelming.

Well it works well enough, image quality appears fine but you can pick up its not local if you can looking at image breakup during fast motion. Latency is good enough for single-player games but twitch based multiplayer is going to suck a bit. Biggest gripe is the lack of Oled. Would have paid $50 more for that easily.

I believe he is the same guy that said he can just go "to his room".

He clearly lives in his parents house, in which case his way of thinking makes kinda sense, I guess.

He also isn't really part of the demographic Sony aims for with Portal.

Hey, I don't really care. Just pointing out the irony of it all

I boil the kettle at least thirty times a day personally ☕
I am only joking as well. All in good faith. This device for sure is not for everyone and I can totally see the cons of it as well. I wis they had made a dedicated handheld also.

I think we can all be doing more to save the planet as well, I am not belittling the waste we all create and it is gross a lot of the consumerism and products we churn through.

Hey, don't shoot me, it just sucks a bit :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I agree with you that it sucks a bit, but not on the reasons why. The concept itself is not that off-base (a WiiU accessory for your PS5), it's just half-baked. If you're going to do just one thing for 200 bucks, do it right.

It's not a shitty handheld, it's a flawed dedicated console streamer. It has strengths too, like convenience/ergonomics, so I get that it's "better" than a phone strapped to a controller. But since it doesn't do anything but stream console gameplay, there's really no reason for it not to be almost as seamless as undocking Switch or using the Wii U gamepad, with similar latency. For $200, give me a break. I'm not asking it to be a real gaming handheld (which you seem shocked it isn't), but I think it should do it's one job very well. Discussions defending this thing led me to believe it would work in a more integrated way, not just jump on your wifi. Pretty poor.

A few tips boys :

- PS5 should be hardwired via Ethernet

- Put static IPs on both the PS5 and portal

- Check channel congestion - use something like Wi-fi analyzer from the Google store to see which one is the less congested and then go to your router and select said channel.(or, you could put it to "auto" in the router's settings).

- Use only the 5Ghz channel - it's better if you separate the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz channels from within your router as to be sure to which one your device(s) connect to, i.e, create a "Neogaf 2.4GHz" and a "Neogaf 5GHz" one.

- If you have a shitty ISP provided router and you can't connect, make sure to open the specific ports for RP (can find them on Sony's site).
Some routers won't let you open specific ports (blocked by the ISP) - happened to me with my ISP's router and no matter what i did, i couldn't connect/put the PS5 out of sleep mode, in the end, i had to buy a new router and now everything works as it should.

- From within your router's settings, enable the QoS priority mode for both the PS5 and your device.

:messenger_tears_of_joy:

I have the old fashioned type wife. The type that hates when their grown up husband plays games if they're around

It's great, can be boring sometimes though. Don't tell her I said that.. :messenger_unamused:

I call Sonys product a bit rubbish and now I'm living back with my parents, in some room you've made up?

I love Gaf. I really do. That actually made me laugh Killjoy :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Wouldn't living in my parents make this my ideal product as they'd probably be using the TV or some such?

I'm not so shocked it isn't a real gaming handheld, I'm just more shocked one of the leading companies in the console space came out with it.

We're in such a fascinating time for handhelds and Sony serve up this. It's more comical than anything else.

But, like you said, $200 is a bit of an ask when we are in that fascinating time..

I was expecting my comments to be burned alive in the thread, fair play. I just wouldn't of minded if Sony brought out a Vita 2 instead. I'd buy it yesterday.

At this point though i'd just settle for a Bloodborne patch :messenger_unamused:

Never mind, it was that oddvintage guy.
My bad, I rarely look at who makes a post, just respond to what's being said. Hence the confusion, since you both use the same logic that reminds me of teens.

But to adress your point, when living at home, I assume you'd be playing in your own room, not your parents living room. Unless you're 7yo or something.
(Generally speaking, not necessarily directed towards you personally).

How is it the logic of a teen to see that this is a worthless endeavour?

If this thing sells gangbusters I'll gladly eat my hat. For everyone else I'm hedging my bets on them just playing the PS5 itself.

Nothing is gained by it existing.

Cant you buy the attachments for the sticks?

I will start looking for those later today as I have stick caps on my DS and really love them

With smaller sticks do your thumbs feel like they slide off? I hope stick drift is addressed since or can you replace them if they start going out.

I don't really have any issues with thumbs sliding off they just feel a little odd being smaller

I got some with he accessories I ordered. I'm just using the grips vs any extenders. If they're bulky enough they will do a good job of raising the height. Just have to make sure they don't rub when you circle

I was going to do other stuff this morning but have decided to start ordering accessories :)

Had a screen protector already but now have some stick caps and a carrying case on the way.

Now looking for a nice looking stand/charging dock? to have it out on the desk

I've been going back and forth about this device. It could be good if remote play ever gets to the same level of lag as Stadia. With Stadia I could play risk of rain 2 and didn't feel any input delay. That Resident Evil browser demo was also very good. Remote play has a lot of room for improvement before being worthy of a dedicated device.

Because any adult who has been in at least 1 serious relationship should be able to easily figure out at least one situation where a device like Portal might come in handy.

Whether it's worth the price (or a purchase) is irrelevant.
