I find it really odd that having a PSN account is required yet there are several countries where PSN is not supported. Yes, people can make an account through alternate means, but Sony knowingly set this condition for playing HD2 on PC while simultaneously being aware that not all customers can easily create an account - and that is on them, not the customer. It comes across as short-sighted.
While I agree with you on this, this will ultimately mean the fix is to prevent steam sales of the game in those regions rather than the alternative of the user creating a PSN account in a different region (for example somebody in the Philippines selecting HK as their country)

Personal shrines? I don’t like how you throw all People who like PlayStation under one category. Maybe they are just satisfied consumers who actually play games.
Why else would people make PlayStation their shrine? Well not because it’s shit. I would move back to pc if it was that way.
Of course, an exaggeration, I'm with you there. But console gamers are willing to put up with a lot. There's a reason why EA, Ubisoft and co. enjoy so much resistance with their systems on the PC. Valve neither aren't saints.

But we don't need to discuss the fact that Sony's pushing through is simply stupid. They damaged their reputation on PC, but someone will have thought it through. To accuse people of exaggerating when a corporation is playing their game here is slightly exaggerated. The fact that they are not even trying to communicate and implement the change properly is simply embarrassing. I'm sticking with my opinion: product management on an amateur level.

So why was the game playable without one for so long with no problems at all?
I would bet most games that have one don't need one.
We've known about this since last year. We have a thread on here in January about needing one. They've said it on the Steam page since last year. They say it on the trailer. They say it on the blog post.
This is a case of not reading the Steam page before buying (I've done that myself, its annoying needing to add a different account to play games).
It was in their known issues after launch about issues with the accounts which is why it was disabled for a while:
Account Linking
Some players are having trouble linking their PSN accounts to their game in the initial setup screen. They may see an error code indicating a server request problem. For now, you can skip that screen and play normally. Later—after we resolve those server request errors—the game will ask people who skipped that screen to try linking their accounts again.
(This was in Feb).

It's absolutely because Sony have only decided you MUST have a PSN account recently, due to the game's popularity. They want to sell you their shit in their walled off eco-system, and impress their shareholders with 'engagement' fifures.

It's based in pure fucking greed, and absolutely nothing else. If the game had remained less popular, this wouldn't be happening.

I can see how this could be of benefit to people who play on both PC and PS5, but there doesn't seem to be any value for anyone else. It's just to inflate the numbers for PSN (as you say, greed), but it's especially ridiculous in this case because Sony doesn't offer PSN itself to some of the customers they insist must have it. This whole trend of having to set up accounts to play games has been ongoing for years now, but it's just been getting more and more out of hand as time passes. From what I can tell, they had this in mind for HD2 right from the start but it still doesn't make it right.

Never said not releasing on pc and we have loads of gaas games blowing up on their own launcher. They messed with the most radical crowed in the gaming industry and will probably lose millions because of an unwarranted shitstorm. The might learn the right lesson and stay away from steam.

How did I know you would try to pin this shit on Valve?

That's an interesting idea. I cannot imagine Sony being agreeable to losing those sales.

And yet... everything worked fine without one up until now? So why wasn't it implemented straight away if it was so important and necessary? It's been months. They don't seem to have been that worried about it until recently? I wonder why.

Meanwhile.....this is what "losing millions" looks like...

gwyj4bD.png

It's lost some steam (pun intended) on concurrent player chart, falling out of the top ten, but I guess it'll be longer term before it can really be accurately analysed as to whether it's had any real effect or not.

It's there for MAU and to ban people, but they have always said it was a requirement.

Hmm, I don't think so. Peak time for the game is typically around 20:00 UTC. It hit 119k yesterday at that time.

I think the point being it wasn't much of a requirement... until the game became wildly popular and they wanted to maximise their profits, and prove high engagement for their shareholders.

But then... if they'd have actually required the PSN sign in right from launch, it probably wouldn't have become popular on PC.

All this is driven by Sony's greed, and I'm perplexed that more people can't see this and condemn it.

That's bullshit. Sea of thieves is widely successful on steam and always was with the account requirement. The shitstorm im gaming is always selective.

Absolutely in a reasonable way which isn't the case here looking at the reviews.
The beauty of Steam as a platform is how it enables gamers to share discerning opinions about their purchases. It's a better metric for the most part than anything else in measuring how consumers feel about games. I don't think the 37k negative reviews since yesterday are all unreasonable takes. I mean, they spent money on the game, they can say what they want about it.

It's called cancel culture for the most part but go on.

It's been downhill since Feb 21st.

This was in Feb right after the game launched. It was disabled until <insert future update> when all issues have been fixed with it.

Interestingly I think the larger story here is Sony's brand. I suspect this type of backlash wouldn't have been as intense mid 2014 fresh off the launch of PS4.

Perhaps it'll induce some soul searching? /s

EDIT: Also I see a lot of "it's not a big deal guys"... than it should be optional by that argument right?

Don't think it'll have much of an effect immediatly, especially since the change hasn't been enforced yet. And game has been steadily losing players since release so we won't be able to differentiate what will be a "normal decay" from a consequence of the backlash. This is still a PR nightmare for them tho.

Yes. That is true. But the point is still that there is no need to have the PSN account to play the game.

You're defending Sony's desire to make PC players sign into their eco-system, when it wasn't necessary then, and isn't necessary now.

What benefit does the now enforced requirement bring to the consumer?

It doesn't matter whether Sony want it or not... it matters whether players of the game want it or not.

Reasonable according to who? I think this is perfectly reasonable. Nobody should try and police this. The reviews are strictly by the players and for the players. They’re not there to appeal to or protect corporate interests.

Exactly.

'It's trivial! It takes seconds! It's not important! It doesn't matter!'

Then why the fuck do Sony want you to do it so much?

There was literally a screen in the game at launch that said a PSN acc is required to play the game. And here is the FAQ from steam discussions that says they have disabled the Account Linking stuff due to errors:

Valve themselves said they will tackle it a few years back, but it doesnt seem like their policy reaches here

Anyway I read quite alot of reviews and alot of them are straight up lying so if you think that's reasonable than yes live your cancel culture.

So many dictators and awful people try to use fear to control people. Clearly they haven't been doing it right, because nothing strikes more fear into the hearts of connected users than an account login. :messenger_winking_tongue:

It's just a login. If you have had a modern PS you already have one, if you don't they don't require much in the way of identifiable information. You don't have to put a payment method in their either. For those that are really concerned about this kind of thing, it seems like it can be done safely if you setup the account right.

Unfortunately the reason PSN hasn't entered those markets is usually because sales in those markets aren't high enough to do so or sometimes rarely there is a legal block on entering them. If they wanted to do this the 100% legitimate way they wouldn't be allowed to sell there but they know most people just create an account from another region so they don't block sales. People in the Philippines for example don't officially have PSN support, they have to create a HK account even though sony sells PS5's in the Philippines. They don't prevent or try to block it and they unofficially encourage it.

I hate needing to use extra accounts to play games, it's annoying. I just don't see the big deal since they have always said this is needed (it's still annoying) and Arrowhead only didn't force it because there were issues at launch which I would assume are now fixed.
