Why does Sony make female characters uglier in their games?

You're a mythological giantess wandering through the afterlife of the gods with a talking gelatinous cube... I think they got you covered.
Totally agree... so why are some so upset that people want the main character to look attractive, or at the very least a fair representation of the actress she is based on.

To be honest, it has to be insecurity in their own appearance or their personality. And I think we're still seeing this in some of the larger AAA games because these studios have been working on these games since 2020 or 2021.

There's no way this game pulls the same amount of sales at a Kratos God of War.

I do not want realism, these games are all about escapism.
But this is the stupid-ass reason why we have black elves and multicultural tribes in Horizon. This has nothing to do with realism or escapism, things need to be grounded.

This woman is not young, it's a mother that has died and is on a battefield. Do you want her to look like a Hollywood actress?

I really don't get it. Like, I agree with many games where they're uglyfying women, MJ in Spider-Man was absolutely obvious. But in this case, I don't get it. I get the criticism about the cringe-ass cube, I get how many western games are doing women dirty, but this is an overcorrection we don't need.

Very sweeping statement, Hollywood has done this for years with both male and female actors. The videogame industry is pushing an agenda for inclusion, like Hollywood has also done. No issue with it in the slightest, but lets not pretend we do not know what's going on...

I have no real issue with any of this, but let's not make us faux reasons for any of this happening.

Tbh, I've always disliked the visuals of "Kratos", I feel like his character was specifically made to appeal to a younger audience. But that female character, in-game comes across as genuinely human and somewhat weathered compared to the often doll-like trope of females in games. Either way, she makes me more interested in playing the game than Kratos does. But then again, I guess I'm not the typical GoW fan.

Why would you complain that you don't want reality and also complain the actress is not a 'fair representation' of the woman in reality? Either you want realistic or not. Adding the cosmetic western beauty standards of 2026 to a story set in an ancient mythological world would be as immersion-breaking as Faye pulling out an iPhone and scrolling her TikTok, or kicking off her snapback heels, or complaining about the lack of vegan options in the local medieval fort.

Your version of realistic seems to align with the developers. And you just seem to be making excuses for them. The idea that because this is set in a mythological world means she has to be less attractive... does not make any sense.

Exactly. And pointing this out usually just gets you called names that have lost all meaning. I do have an issue with it, because it's effectively taken over large parts of gaming. Look at almost every major AAA franchise that used to have a male lead. Many have been switched to female protagonists or heavy 'inclusivity' updates. Male characters increasingly come across as soft, wrong, or outright villains.

It's exhausting. It's been said many times before, but if they want to tell these stories then just make new IPs instead of riding the name recognition of the originals.

We all know why they don't...

You're only lying to yourself. She has a completely different facial structure. It's a message they're trying to defend. Nothing more, nothing less.

Why do character models in Capcom games look great under any lighting condition with or without make up but with Sony games the lighting and make up have a big impact in how the character looks lol. What a coincidence

They will never answer this because they can't lol

Yeah seriously. What is this?

They believe it makes their stuff look more grounded.. deluded into thinking would be perceived as serious and prestigious as a movie would be. Not sure how you guys never noticed how fucking trash actresses can look in movies compared to their real life counterpart, in drama and such.
At the same time, they keep ESG and all the left wing lunatics happy. It is what it is. Wouldn't be personally interested in the game even if she was hot.

I mean look at the director... i wouldnt expect her to make anything that leaves her butthurt
Classy.

That same director directed this for us.

And recently said she's "very proud of it". But whatever, you are well within your rights to be an asshole with such comments.

Imagine you cast Deborah Ann Woll and you transform her into a drug-addict-looking crazy cat lady in the final prod.

What a fucking tragedy.

It's also no coincidence that they chose the most covered trench coat in the universe for Jean Grey.

Sure but that was in 2010 before Anita and woke mind virus.

While I don't consider her woke, I fully support anyone who does.

I tried warning the woke aholes for years and years that this would happen.

Just kept poking the bear: insulting, shaming, demoralizing, lying, deflecting, ignoring fair criticism, lashing out, banning, dogpiling, canceling.

I got insulted and dogpiled and banned from so many places for level headed takes with no demeaning language so I'm loving every minute of this. You are getting what you deserve.

If this was a one time thing then the thread would seem silly like some in here are suggesting, BUT its not a one time thing. Western devs have displayed a pattern of behavior here for many years now, a pattern of making female protagonist in-game models look decidedly less attractive than their voice actors, decidedly more masculine or just uglier than they typically would.

There are many examples of this behavior. Star Wars Outlaws. Horizon West, the latest Fable game, Mass Effect, and now this "God of Laundry".

What makes it appear to be very much on purpose is the fact these same devs seem to have zero problems making male in-game characters look attractive or look identical to their actor counterparts. It's only a pattern of behavior with the female models.

AND it seems to be squarely a western dev phenomenon, devs from other parts of the world don't display this same pattern, in fact very much the opposite. So it isn't a tech issue, its a willful choice.

Whether or not its a real phenomenon isn't really up for debate despite some people denying it exists, there is plentiful evidence to show its real. The real question is WHY do western AAA devs keep doing this? What is their reason for it? Why do they keep doing this over and over again?

Whats dumb as hell is thinking that ^ looks anything like this

I mean, it's pretty accurate.... The biggest problem with this image is not the model but the textures, lighting and angle. The eyelids in particular are standing out most likely due to a light source from the top of her head mixed with the scene having global illumination.

Lol it's genuinely tough to tell if this is satire or not. If this entire thread was all just satirical bait, then damn, you got me good. I mean, next time save it for weekend GAF, but well done 😂
To top it off, nearly every one of his screens has nothing to do with the model itself. Blurry textures, bad lighting explain 99% of his issues but he's too dumb to see it.

Wonder why she's always got accurate models in games.

Are you sure tho ?

Debra Wislon, from madtv fame was actually a hottie when young (if you like the brash big boobed type), and not so bad even old as shown below.

My question is why do video games art directors persist in using her bald look and not giving her the huge boobs she herself is proud to have paid for (there are numerous old clips where she talks about them and how she wants to look sexy in general) ?

Then again we know the ugly lesbo look caters to a certain ugly demographic swarming the video game industry.

To answer the thread's question :
There are two reasons for sony uglifying their female characters.
One is hubris. The famous actors that they use as protags are rendered with such precision and the devs are so proud of their tools they keep all the ugly shit that would have been masked by make up on purpose, thinking it is the pinnacle of realism.
The second is political, like for Debra Wilson. I don't have to elaborate on that, everyone here knows about the thing. it starts with woke and end with slop.

I think it's crazy that you guys think this is intentional. It just comes down to talent and they failed at rendering her properly in the game. It's just uncanny valley rearing its head into the model.

Since when gods are aging? And even if they are, this is not the same rate as humans.

And this happens during the time of 2018 game, so actress was also 8 years younger than now.
As it is happening at the time of 2018, they all look age appropriate to the setting/story-beat. She is old age dead in 2018, who cares how the real actress looks.
And god age. It is the right decision to age them if you wanna tell a story about father-son.

It's strange how the Asian studios can translate the beauty of the face model to the character, but when it comes to the Americans and Europeans it's an impossible task.

Even that can be hit or miss. There were scenes in RE9 where Grace would look hot then others were the model looked jank as hell. The more devs try to push into realism the more uncanny valley sticks its head out.

I guess Kratos is kinda like Mario was back in the day. A cap/hairless dude is easier to render. So it frees time to polish other details, and stylise him. Here, much effort was put into her hair and other parts suffer a bit, just do not look that well composed. That she looks older than her model is okay imho. Could have hired a pure mocap actress then though.

I have not yet played any of the new GoW, but the thing that irritated me most was the floaty movement of her. Can't remember noticing that in the Dad of War videos I saw.
I don't know her story though, so whatever imho. The cube blob is odd though... valve managed to make a cube likable but this feels more and too much on the nose.

She didn't die because she was old lol. She had son 8-10 years earlier, probably in her twenties. They also modeled Ragnarok character model around Deborah when she was in early 30s.
