I'm re-installing the game now, so I will get back to you later with detailed options. But the game defaulted to Very High on first run. Maybe it's not technically 60FPS (don't have FPS count or Fraps), but for sure it's way more than 30FPS, including in places like Whiterun.

Yeah, i get better fps in general in Battlefield 3 so i dont understand what's wrong. Maybe its just a badly optimized game and BF3 is better.

The launcher is beyond broken. It told me that my recommended setting was High.

I use 3-Way GTX 580 SLI with an overclocked i7-2600K...

Still getting re-detection of HW spec upon loading the game. It resets my ini every time and have to keep overriding it with the copied ini I put in the desktop due to this issue. It's rather tedious going through this every time. I even made the SkyrimPrefs read only and it still does it.

I have to try the large address aware patch too as I've been messing with ugrids and I like what I see (with hardly any performance hit). Tried 4xSSAA without much of a hit either, I'm impressed.

I'm using this http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=240

In the SkyrimCustomShader_Config file it comes with I set pre and post-sharpening to 0 and leave AA settings off (use skyrim's FXAA or MSAA if you don't like a fuzzy image), so this is what I changed:

bool highQualitySharpen = 0;

#define Gamma 1.18
#define Exposure 0.080
#define Saturation -0.50
#define BlueShift 0.50

float Sharpen = 0;

If you do use FXAA the sharpening might help, but if you just use MSAA it should be off.
Nice. I'll check it out tonight. Thanks.

Top image looks so much better. People have to remember, this is a cold place as well. Imagine a cold mist that just covers everything, gives it that bleak look. Hate how crushing blacks and just ramping up saturation in every game has just become the "Oh let's improve it!" norm.

Seriously. So many "improved" texture packs for games out there that just jack up the sharpness and color saturation.

The only time I experienced that was when evaluating ENB and FXAA injectors, or if the sD3DDevice name was set incorrectly in SkyrimPrefs.

Most people that think they are "improving" the game have no understanding of color theory or any other basic concepts of art and graphic design. The subjective nature of art means that tweaking things like this are really just personal preference.

Actually loading a bigger, higher resolution and more detailed texture is a whole other category.

If you copy a ini file you have check that the entry for the graphics card matches that of your card. I had the same problem and once I adjusted the resolution (i.e. monitor does not support 1080p) and the set the graphics card entry it didn't force redetection.

Off, always off :) FXAA has no advantages vs. MSAA in this game due to its lack of deferred rendering.

Ive tried the nvidia inspector thing to get AA working other than FXAA and it doesnt seem to work for me. I've got a 570 gtx, i wonder whats wrong.

Just to clarity, you set the nvidia inspector to the proper setting, leave AA as "application controlled" then set the AA levels in the Skyrim launcher right?

Wow, excellent ini, much better framerate in Markarth!

Really great shadow lod, hardly notice the fade in.

Also, I changed a few things around, such as disabling the Transparency AA and FXAA ini settings, and enabled 8x in game multisampling (for some reason I get way better performance using that AA versus forcing any other kind in CCC).

NEW ATI CAP OUT

But oh noes, what is this:

"New profiles added to this release:
- Saints Row 3: Resolves stuttering seen when playing in CrossFireX mode. Also provides Single GPU and CrossFireX performance improvements when running in lower resolution configurations
- Gothic 4 Arcania: Fall of Setarrif: Improves CrossFire performance"

Umm... Anyone want to buy two 6870s?

That interface looks great! Dunno about the dragon logo or the bars, but that would be an amazing mod for the game.

Can't wait when three years pass and Bathesda releases the GOTY version with awesome DLC included, and the very first thing you will have to do is download mods to make it work (better).

Does anyone have FXAA injector settings that make it less "dark" and "black"? I actually like some of the color changes but its way too damn dark. I assume there is a gamma setting in the adjustable config file? (at work so I can't look)

Well, with my GTX 570, if I even turn AA on through Skyrim launcher, the framerate goes to 1 fps or 1 frame every 5 seconds or so. I disabled it there and enabled 4x through Inspector. To do that, change "application controlled" to "override application". The 4x and 8x work fine as far as I can tell. Some of the others though don't seem to do much good. I can't get supersampling to work for some reason.

I'm surprised by how well this looks - my computer is 2-3 years old, Quad Core, 260GTX, 4GB RAM, 32-bit OS, and I can get it to run at 60FPS, Very High, 1680x1050. I'm happy!

I'm having no issues either.

ATI 4890 HD
AMD Phenom X6 1055t 2.80ghz
4gb Ram
Windows 7 64-Bit

running between 40 and 60 fps according to fraps with just a few texture mods

Mind you nothing is overclocked and I am also running local movies via boxee at the same time. Game on monitor boxee on tv.

And still runs like a dream.

Mine has not crashed yet either and stll plays on high settings despite my PC being several years old.

theres no one definitive guide yet, they are posted in bits and pieces all over the place for now, plus theres ones that people somehow know to add into them that don;t exist, for example i couldnt stand how grass swayed like it was constantly being blown around, so someone showed me a line to add to tweak how much the grass sways.

try that ini i posted above. i have an i5 2500k and a gtx 560ti. that ini is the absolute best mix of quality and performance, no jagged shadows or anything. I have AA off though because im forcing it through nvidia inspector (get it if you dont already and set it to how I have it int he pic below) and I'm also forcing on ambient occlusion which eats up a load of FPS but worth it if it means i have to keep AA on low. Fxaa is nice to soften the pixelated look at mid and long range, looks more real with it on.

After pasting this ini , don't use the launcher or it will rewrite some things. And remember you have to set your resolution in there manually and paste your GPU's name in there as it appears in device manager (replace my 560 ti)

I went ahead and tried both your ini & inspector profile but clearly my system can't handle the same settings. I have a little bit of a performance hit - any tips on what to tone down first?

Have any of you guys looked at the .ini files from Kieranh7 on SkyrimNexus? .Skyrim Tweaks Complete by Kieranh7

I decided to try them them out last night since he based the tweaks off the same video card I am running (6950 2MB). Game looks great with no screen tearing, but I dropped a good 10-20 frames a second on average (~30 in cities, ~40+ inside). I am torn on weather or not to go back to my old .ini files to keep these.

If you have tried these, or know of better .ini files let me know. I am at the point where I really need to stop tweaking my setup and get to playing the game. =)

I'm using the FXAA Injector Mod, but without Sharpen. The whole Sharpen effect makes the game ugly IMO. Everyone should try it without Sharpen, actually turns it into a real world that is dreary, rather than grey that is dreary.

I had your exact issue, even posted about it somewhere in this thread I think.
I have similar specs but the same CPU.
Its the overclock. let it stay default at 3.0 and you should be fine. I am at least and it was driving me insane. Actually when it would happen it would hard lock up the pc.
This game doesn't appear to like overclocking, at least not for me.

My plasma loves this game.

Mine too man. I have a Dell u2311 as my pc monitor (and i thought it was awesome).
Then I duplicated my desktop out to my 50" Sammy Plasma, and the quality of the picture - the blacks, the cover, the details ... everything just jumps out the same way as in your screen shots. My Dell ultrasharp looks downright washed out, when compared to the plasma.

The difference is so marked (even after I I recalibrated the u2311) it's seriously made me reconsider buying any other television other than plasma going forward. (I am close to pullin the trigger on a Sharp 70" LCD-LED panel)

Yes, there is a gamma setting in the .ini - "fGamma". Personally I set it to 0.8000 from the default 1.0400. Why there is no gamma option is beyond me. Hopefully it'll be patched in.

Apologies for the simple question but is it ok to enable vsync/triple buffering for Skyrim through Radeon Pro like this?

http://i.imgur.com/mqGfh.png

For other games I used D3DOverrider but since I'm already running Radeon Pro per the OP's suggestion I'd like to remove redundancies and I like how Radeon Pro autolaunches at start-up unlike D3DOverrider(which required me to manually input the admin password every time.) This is assuming it works with the game at all, I just got the game yesterday and haven't had much time to look into it.

Thanks!

Is there a fix for stuttering while turning? I'm getting 60fps according to fraps, but it looks like 30fps while I'm turning. It never used to do that, and now all of a sudden it is doing it. Also, it seems like it might happen when I'm looking at candles...

Adjusting the gamma while using the FXAA injector has made a huge difference with the darkness. It didn't bother me much before but in caves it can get bad at times.

Triple Buffering works through RadeonPro? Nice. Will enable that once I get home.

But... does triple buffering work with Crossfire? I'm using the Oblivion crossfire profile in RadeonPro right now. Dual 2GB 6950s BTW.

Wow, you're awesome! It worked...

On a related note: why the $%!# does the game put it in SkyrimPrefs.ini by default!?

Also: that's frikin' weird that Skyrim ignores your vsync forcing in CCC. I can't even force it on in CCC with iPresentInterval=0.

And, wtf is with the vertical look sensitivity scaling with framerate!? With vsync off I'm getting like 120fps in some places and the vertical look is SUPER sensitive, and the horizontal is the same... anyone know what's up with that?

No. Why make an updated UI on pc for gamepads? I'd say the original one is close to perfection for controller users... Nonsense!

I thought that command made the vertical mouse movement jacked up and dependant on your fps? I am afraid to turn off vsync, but I don't have any mouse lag except for a tiny bit on the main menu. Does turning it off imrpove your fps overall? If not, I'll keep it.

Has anyone ever tried turning off Vsync using the .ini tweaks and then forcing it through d3doverrider and got better performance?

I know of a few games where I was able to eek out a few more frames by turning off built in Vsync and using d3do instead.

Seriously, how does anyone play this game with iPresentInterval=0!?

The fps dependent vertical sensitivity is soooo terrible; it's unplayable!

Go into your options and turn down AA and AF. They're set to an absurdly high default. Change it to 4x for both.

That seems very low; abnormally low. Are you sure all your hardware is running at proper frequencies? Are your drivers up to date?

Also, AF shouldn't have any impact on your framerate with a decently modern card, and the default game AA isn't very taxing either it seems. Neither of those should be your problem.

Theres a few things you can do, they all have caveats of course though. The biggest thing is turn off ambient occlusion in Inspector if you were using that, but you might really miss out on all the shadows that really make everything look like they are actually in a 3d space. That will double frame rate right there.

Second, you can alternatively set multisampling to 1 in the .ini, and set Inspector to say "Application Settings" instead of overriding it, and then turning the FXAA from 0 to 1 in the.ini

You can lastly set the shadowmapresolution numbers from 4096 to 2048 or 1024, but the lower you make the number the more jagged the shadows are going to be. Shadowmaskquarter affects my FPS as well, try different numbers there (nothing beyond 4) before you mess with the resolution settings, the lower the number the more FPS you will get (not sure how much, it wasn't a large amount for me but it was noticeable.

Also the larger you set your FOV the bigger a FPS hit you will take as well. Muck with those settings to find your

Been having fairly frequent BSOD only when waking from sleep/powering on so trying to diagnose and rule things out. With everything set to Ultra I was only getting 15-20 fps, changing to High changed average fps to 30 according to fraps. Does this seem low for my rig?

What driver/CAP do you have installed? Crossfire support is sketchy right now for this game.
