Does anyone else murder any and all Thalmor that they cross paths with? I hate them.

My character is not a murderer but makes an exception for Thalmor.

my khajiit is one murderous bastard, period. i've also worked his
dragon priest
helm into his backstory.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I am now the Arch Mage!

Got to 100 smithing today and speech to 50 or so :) I'm now using
Light Dragonscale armor.
It's pretty nice so far! I also joined
The Dark Brotherhood
and plan to continue with that tonight. Could anyone recommend me a good 1 handed sword? Right now I'm using just an Elven sword along with a Glass Dagger.

Nice man! As a pro-tip for those that have finished the quest line, (minor item spoilers)
there's a pair of inconspicuous boots just called "Boots" in the Arch-Mage quarters that Aren actually enchanted with +40% lightning resist. They're on a wardrobe next to the display case containing a dwarven dagger. Just in case you don't have any enchanted boots yourself, or at least don't yet have the lightning resist enchantment.

Again, as I find myself saying so often, holy shit.

Oh, one more thing... An honourable request, from an honourable man.

So, now I'm done with the Main Quest, Thieves' Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. Going to clean up the rest of the Dragon Priests and Daedric Quests then never touch it again.

So I am nearing 50 and got sad looking at the soft level cap online. Thank god I can still earn perks. I power leveled smithibg to make sure I earned dragon and ebony as soon as possible.

At level 43 I finally bothered to learn how to enchant things and now obsessed with that as I have dreams of putting the awesome skill enhancements I have on lower level armor to the new stuff I power leveled to build in the first place with smithing! Its going to feel weird destroying those orchestra gauntlets that gave me 35% bowdamage, but that's progress!

Is there any vendor that sells lockpicks? I need one to progress in the Dark Brotherhood questline. :\

I've been buying lots, so definitely. Check general goods store. I'm sure fences in the Thieves Guild will sell them also like Oblivion. But can't say since I haven't joined that guild in Skyrim yet.

Awesome, thanks everyone.

Gonna try the vendors around towns first before the Theives Guild. Im trying to clean up my quest log, joining a guild wont help :p

so I think I'm gonna crack and get it before finals are over.... question: in both Morrowind and Oblivion the key to building your character was to make you major attributes things you didn't want to use (to maximise your levelling bonus). Is it the same thing in Skyrim?

No, as major and minor attributes no longer exist.

nope, the only thing you have to be careful about is not putting perk points into something you are not going to use, there's none of the 'calculator levelling' like in oblivion, its much more natural.

Just finished the main quest-

Asides from a couple of shouts (which are admittedly good) so far there doesn't seem to be much of a reward, in oblivion you had a big-ass statue of you made up, in fact so far noone really seems to care. The giant underground cavern was fuck awesome though, I would love a homebase in that type of environment. Obviously much smaller and without the enemies but the lights and glowing plants were a superb aesthetic

And the mage guild-

wasn't as fun or involving as oblivions the story was more interesting but felt very short, if it wasn't for the huge-ass dungeons sucking up the time it would have been a very, very short quest line. Being handed the keys to the guild was a bit of a let down, the guild just isnt as nice a place to be as the imperial guild with a bland scheme and lack of interesting background activities on the go and the arch-mage status and climb up that rank was very 'meh'

Skyrim is easily a better world but oblivions is more inviting.

Also where is my goddam ridable sabertooth.

Can I contract
werewolf disease
while having
vampirism
? I'd have liked to have checked out the former, but somehow ended up contracting the latter some time ago. It's been convenient, but nowhere near as useful to me as Oblivion since there are no stats. And it's definitely a huge burden when a dragon shows up and I'm pretty far gone.

Oh god why did no-one tell me that you can disable xbox controller in the setup and it makes the UI 10 fold easier to battle through.

Does the bladesman perk affect daggers?

No. AFAIK. According to UESP it doesn't.

Orcish armor is ugly. Really, really ugly. Too bad it is the best armor i got at the moment. I do not have any points spent in Heavy Armor but Flawless Orcish Armor gives me (with skill of 35) about 30% damage resistance (UESP armor page tells how to calculate that). Need to get better smithing ASAP and make Legendary armor. With time, i might never need to spend points in Heavy Armor (though Conditioning would be useful) to gain maximum damage resistance of 85%.

Is there a consensus already which perks to take, and not? I'm lvl10, got 2 points in Destruction, a few in Conjuration, and one in Smithing. I'm planning on doing them + Alchemy, Enchanting, and some other Magic schools.

Anyone with a playstyle similar to that? What perks did you pick?

Concerning the Dark Brotherhood, and gaining access to them, can someone steer me in a direction? To start,
I killed the religious crier in Whiterun one night, undetected. That was my initial kill. Several in-game days later I was ambushed in the open field in broad daylight by a nameless assassin. I defeated her, and she carried a note stating me being marked as a target. It's been several in-game days now and nothing else has happened.

Am I on the right track at all?

Question about Markath Mine Prison quest:

Was I not supposed to start killing all the guards after I got out? lol there's corpses everywhere and I went to the Understone Keep and now even some of the non-guard NPCS are attacking me...feels like I messed up somewhere along here. Should I re-load my save at the beginning of the prison?

Not unless you want a bounty on your head. After that happened to me I restarted it. Didn't realize you could
kill everyone in there instead
and for me being a Companion that was pretty easy.

Been buying them from the general store in Whiterun. He's usually got seven or so when his inventory refreshes

Start talking to innkeepers regarding local rumors to get more information about the Dark Brotherhood's presence in Skyrim.

No.
Ask for rumors with inkeepers/barkeeps and they'll tell you about a boy who wants to summon the Dark Brotherhood.

Agnostic

but believes in Chael
Green Marking of some kind.

I had an Ebony sword which had a green logo of some kind present in the upper left of the information box when looking at it through my inventory. What is it?

It was not stolen.
It was not enchanted.
Other Ebony sword in my inventory was normal.

This happened a while ago so I don't know where I put it. If it happens in the future I'll post a pic somehow to show people if nobody knows what it is.

Edit:I found out. LOL My weapon had a poison on it. I'm such an idiot.

I find myself doing more unforced role playing in this game than in any other. I don't know why, but collecting books became important to me. If it was a unique book, I'd hang onto it, even if it meant ditching other treasure. I pictured myself kicking back in my home, once I had one, lining them up on the bookshelves, and reading them by the fire.

Naturally, I decided this before I owned a house, and while I was saving for the one in Solitude. That would be the 25,000 gold one. It took a full week of exploration and questing (I'm level 27 now), but I finally got my house yesterday. It's a freakin' mansion. I've upgraded two rooms, got an arcane enchanter, loaded the bookshelves with books (sweet books). I dropped 150lbs of books once I had the house. I can loot again!

And then realized just how much stuff comes with the house.

It feels like the upgrades pay for themselves. The safe was filled with valuables, the walls with soul gems, there's food, drink and ingredients everywhere. And I just discovered the weapon mounts and armor mannequins. This game stokes my loot whoring side like nothing else.

Easily my GOTY, and in the running for my game of the forever. I can't think of another game that's made me so happy in so many different ways.

For conjuration I skipped dual casting, necromancy, dark souls, and the one that gives 5% recharge on final blow (kind of pointless since I have more than enough gems)

I didn't get necromancy since I didn't reanimate in the beginning and now I'm skipping it because my dead thralls keep vanishing on me so 100hp isn't a huge deal.

I got most of destruction. Since your'e doing enchantment you can skip some of the 50% cheaper unless you need it to fill out your tree as well. It might be a bit tougher in the beginning but after you get your enchantment up those perks wont' matter as much.

For other schools, check out illusion; pacify is one of my favorite spells. If you ever need a breather you can just toss that out or if you want to cheese you can pacify dudes and then sneak up on them and get crits :lol. Quiet casting is really helpful since you can sneak around if you're planning to do DB. I also got Hypnotic Gaze which boosts pacify from level 20 to 28 which makes it better than the default harmony which takes a long time to cast (and costs a LOT)

Battlemage?
I play as BM, with Destro and Conju as focus (going to max both trees (possibly) minus one or two perks each (rune mastery, something from Conju)). Smithing and Enchanting secondary, as i wear heavy armor. All heavy armor perks from Smithing but not Advanced Armor's one. All but recharge/soul stealer perks from Enchanting as i don't use weapons (other than bound sword occasionally). I probably don't have to spend points in Heavy Armor, Daedric Armor upgraded to Legendary status and enchanted should give me enough protection though Conditioning would be useful as i don't focus on Stamina at all. Any leftover perks will go to One Handed for Bound Sword or artifact swords.

There are no truly useless perks (outside the whole lockpicking tree) though some are rather marginal, catering only to specific playstyle.
Remember that if you use Alchemy or Enchanting, the basic perk needs to be upgraded to max ASAP. Otherwise choose only the perks you really need. From Enchanting, for example, don't pick weapon enchant perks unless you intend to use weapons with those enchants.
Are you going to be a summoner or a necromancer? I'll go both so i take all perks but unless you do the same, you might choose only one path and leave the other alone. I'm not convinced Conju Dual casting is useful, 60 second is good enough spell lenght most the time, at least for me.
In Destruction remember to consider are you going to use all damage types or not. And if you're, do you really need the special effect perks for all? Flame and Frost ones are quite similar in practice, not to mention nigh useless most of the time, dying targets are dead so soon anyway.
Both Alteration and Restoration have useful perks but you probably won't get enough perks to maxime both ones so consider carefully.

I'm in the early game. I have 4000 gold. I want to get a house. What's the best way to get that extra thousand?

I know what you mean. What this game shares with Morrowind is its ability to make me forget all of its flaws and just soak up every bit of it I can discover. Oblivion didn't have that.

I'm 43 hours in now and I have maybe half the map locations uncovered, and even then there's a lot I haven't seen in the areas I have treaded.

I'm curious how many books the Solitude house holds. I've got two houses right now with my books... I'm planning on getting a single copy of every book in Skyrim right now. THe problem that I'm having though is that I was hoping there would be one house that had enough shelves to hold all the books so I can keep them in alphabetical order. Neurotic I know. But my slight OCD tendencies come out in games like this.

Depends. If you have iron ignots, leather strips and filled petty soul gems and know some weapon enchant, make a few iron daggers and enchant them and sell them. Iron Dagger with turn undead made with petty soul gem has value of 600... cheap as hell to make. Depending on your Speech, you're going to profit OK-to-great.
