Favorite unofficial versions of video game music?

A more concise way to word that would be your favorite "remixes" of video game themes, but something doesn't sit right with me on that wording either. But I've always been interested in hearing different versions of video game songs and especially seeing them done in different style or genres. Now as a disclaimer, I am personally not very musically inclined, so my picks are just based on which remixes have just rubbed me the right way, really, but I do try to give some justification.

Here are a couple of my favorites:

Kanjika - Breathtaking Vision (Sky Sanctuary)
Song from Sonic and Knuckles

One of my all time favorites, from the well known Project Chaos compilation. Sky Sanctuary was always so different from many of the other genesis era Sonic themes, with nothing resembling an MJ-inspried type like so many other stage songs. For being pretty much the penultimate level in the final game of Sonic's prime in my opinion, the level has so much going for it to be remembered with two different outcomes depending on who you're playing as, but with the music it's just great. This version faux-orchestrates the theme a bit, and slowly it down for a greater sense of majesty. I absolutely love the 2nd half of this song, if you don't want to give it a full listen, start at 2:00. I have this in my playlist for when I'm studying.

Fire (Lava Reef Zone)
Also from Sonic and Knuckles

Sticking with Sonic for number 2 with this guy's rendition of Lava Reef Zone. This guy is extremely talented. You can tell lots of post processing in place for this one, but the result is great. Maybe not as polished as some other stuff, but I still love giving this a listen every now and then. I love both half of the themes which switches at ~1:55, and the whole song is a nice combination of classic midi stuff and nice guitar work.

S.S.H Big Blue (F-Zero)
Some F-Zero game, not sure which.

This is a remix of F-Zero's Big Blue theme, and while I don't tend to usually like these "rock-i-fied" remixes that permeate the web, this one is good, and (at last it seems with my limited experience with the series) F-Zero has always had really fast themes anyways so this fits better than most, though it still may feel a little juvenile. I love the effort put into this though, for taking a sub 2 minute repeating theme and turning into a 4 minutes melody complete with something resembling verses, a chorus, bridge, and even a middle 8-ish section after the bridge. I was considering having this song play on Brawls F-Zero stage and seeing if it fits at all, but haven't got around to it.

Pianoish Remix of Stickerbrush Symphony
From Donkey Kong Country 2

Not sure why I like this one because it sounds not a whole lot different from the original, but to me, it sounds "softer", and less pop-py (not like the style of music, but like bubbles popping). Sounds more like piano music in this version, and I have a soft spot for pianos; I never learned to play one but my brother did from a young age and got me listening to more piano music in general. This is also in my study playlist.

So do you have any unofficial versions of video game music that you listen to? What are some of your favorites?

First thread so please go easy on me :/ I didn't see a similar thread and search is down.

Man I'll have to listen to some of these again when I'm at home and not in the office trying to listen but not annoy anyone, though I think I've run across of a few of these before.

not licensed in your state

I had forgotten about the Wind Waker unplugged one, so good! As is the project Chaos Hydrocity city one! For some reason, that caused this to slip in my mind.

Fresh Prince + Hydrocity

Seems like such a fucking stupid premise but I can help but smile at the 22 second mark to 50 seconds.

Stealth ocremix thread?

Playing contrarian a little, you guys should all at one point in your lives listen through the past and present of Dwelling of Duels. It's a free contribution site with monthly themed contests, so you have to shuffle through em a bit, but the great ones on there are truly phenomenal. (and subsequently check out any and all of the other stuff by these artists, plenty to listen to)

Ergosonic's haunting acoustic rendition of DKC2's "Forest Interlude" - "Essence of the Woodlands"

The hopelessly catchy and perfectly executed punk remix of Mario 64 themes by Carbohydrom - "Penguin Cap"

Shnabubula's 9 minute idiosyncratic chiptune opus of the melodies of Super Mario World - "Playing Super Mario World While Taking Mushrooms"

and a few others

Gonzo and Cedrix - "8 Worlds of Gloom" - "Dungeon Theme" from The Legend of Zelda

housethegrate - "Light in the Fortress" - "Sigma Stage 2" and "Dr. Light" from Megaman X

And last but far from least, Exile on Mainstream's "Eternal Wind" from Fina Fantasy III (couldn't finda YT link for it, but do look it up I guarantee you will not regret it)

And now I remembered the Snoop Dogg + Kirby Mashup.

It still boggles my mind how well those go together.

Beaten! I tend to post about the Dwelling of Duels in these threads, seems like OCR gets all the love (blech). So much great stuff has come from DoD, even I had an entry years ago. It's been fun watching people progress as well.

My favourite is probably this:

Super Mario 64: Devastation's Doorway

-It takes the minor, connecting sections of music in Bowser's Domain and expands them into a fuller melody. The epic boss theme is used as a quiet bridge, completely defying expectations.

-Its full of energy and incredibly grand. Powerful and varied.

-At 2:32 it becomes GODLY.

Wow, I'm listening to random tracks off the Project Chaos compilation it what I've heard so far is really good!

A few that come to mind:

Burn Baby Burn! (Super Hang On - Outride a Crisis)
---I'm a sucker for guitar remixes :p . This follows the original fairly close, but differentiates itself from the arrange track by taking time to vary the main melody like crazy at first, and the jumps right in with that strong guitar throughout. The arrange mixed the instruments more closely, with synth ending up dominating most of the song, especially at the end. The guitar takes the role of soloing in the last part of the OCRemix track, and it's rockin' in it's own way.

Magnet Missiles (Mega Man 3 - Magnet Man Stage)
---Ska remix of that stage theme. I happened onto this track while searching for tracks to fill a game music playlist, and this jumped out to me, mostly because I haven't really listened to ska in general. Very high energy, and still keeps the original's character (not really my most favorite song from 3, but still good).

From Serious Monkey Business
Bramble Reprise (Donkey Kong Country 2 - Stickerbrush Symphony)
---Remix of one of my favorite songs from DKC2. While each part of this song repeats on the same melody, it comes out really nice with the slight variations made each time, ending with the last part being a cool quick solo.

Dance of the Zinger (Donkey Kong Country 2 - Stickerbrush Symphony)
---Sorta nice remix, turning the tense original into a disco-type track that wouldn't be out of place in your average curtain-fire shooter. Not realy better than original, just different in a good way.

Re-Skewed (Donkey Kong Country 2 - Donkey Kong Rescued[Credits])
---How could I forget this track? A great mix of the original (can be expected, this particular song is a David Wise track), ends up very final-sounding due to those trumpets, present in the original, being put to good strong use throughout. The soft sound inbetween trumpet cries is supplemented by piano and guitar working their own interpretations of the main tune (sort of works out to a call-and-response type of piece overall).

Monkeys Disarm Their Kremlings (Donkey Kong Country 2 - Crocodile Cacophony)
---Death metal? Okay then. I don't usually listen to death metal, but I really liked this track. Fun lyrics, ends up making the original sound better with the genre change, plus the small bonus part at the end makes great use of the recorder to round out the track.

From Project::Chaos
The Doomsday (Sonic & Knuckles - Doomsday Zone)
---As mentioned, I really like guitar remixes, and this happens to be one of my favorite for one of my favorite songs in S&K. Despite not spending much time with this game, the original still stood out, and this remix is a very good (if not straightforward interpretation) of the original. Nice melody, but the percussion ends up turning into hissing at times, which does get a little annoying, but the song is still good.

Ah...can't think of any more right now, maybe later.
