A more concise way to word that would be your favorite "remixes" of video game themes, but something doesn't sit right with me on that wording either. But I've always been interested in hearing different versions of video game songs and especially seeing them done in different style or genres. Now as a disclaimer, I am personally not very musically inclined, so my picks are just based on which remixes have just rubbed me the right way, really, but I do try to give some justification.
Here are a couple of my favorites:
Kanjika - Breathtaking Vision (Sky Sanctuary)
Song from Sonic and Knuckles
One of my all time favorites, from the well known Project Chaos compilation. Sky Sanctuary was always so different from many of the other genesis era Sonic themes, with nothing resembling an MJ-inspried type like so many other stage songs. For being pretty much the penultimate level in the final game of Sonic's prime in my opinion, the level has so much going for it to be remembered with two different outcomes depending on who you're playing as, but with the music it's just great. This version faux-orchestrates the theme a bit, and slowly it down for a greater sense of majesty. I absolutely love the 2nd half of this song, if you don't want to give it a full listen, start at 2:00. I have this in my playlist for when I'm studying.
Fire (Lava Reef Zone)
Also from Sonic and Knuckles
Sticking with Sonic for number 2 with this guy's rendition of Lava Reef Zone. This guy is extremely talented. You can tell lots of post processing in place for this one, but the result is great. Maybe not as polished as some other stuff, but I still love giving this a listen every now and then. I love both half of the themes which switches at ~1:55, and the whole song is a nice combination of classic midi stuff and nice guitar work.
S.S.H Big Blue (F-Zero)
Some F-Zero game, not sure which.
This is a remix of F-Zero's Big Blue theme, and while I don't tend to usually like these "rock-i-fied" remixes that permeate the web, this one is good, and (at last it seems with my limited experience with the series) F-Zero has always had really fast themes anyways so this fits better than most, though it still may feel a little juvenile. I love the effort put into this though, for taking a sub 2 minute repeating theme and turning into a 4 minutes melody complete with something resembling verses, a chorus, bridge, and even a middle 8-ish section after the bridge. I was considering having this song play on Brawls F-Zero stage and seeing if it fits at all, but haven't got around to it.
Pianoish Remix of Stickerbrush Symphony
From Donkey Kong Country 2
Not sure why I like this one because it sounds not a whole lot different from the original, but to me, it sounds "softer", and less pop-py (not like the style of music, but like bubbles popping). Sounds more like piano music in this version, and I have a soft spot for pianos; I never learned to play one but my brother did from a young age and got me listening to more piano music in general. This is also in my study playlist.
So do you have any unofficial versions of video game music that you listen to? What are some of your favorites?
First thread so please go easy on me :/ I didn't see a similar thread and search is down.
