Xenoblade coming to the U.S. via Gamestop Exclusive (also avail on Nintendo.com)

I was just saying this the other day about this with someone who was telling me there was zero chance this would come out in the US. Gamecube had a war pinball game, a weird plug looking chibi game, and a card battle RPG come out in 2006 by Nintendo.

They were just milking this stuff to get to the finish line.

I was trying to find that thread so I could eat delicious crow. To be fair, I thought they would release Last Story instead of Xenoblade, so I was with you in spirit!

Well now we just need The Last Story and Pandora's Tower and Earth Seeker and Disaster and...

Well at least one is something!

I've been bad and haven't imported it yet... but I think I might still import it rather than buy the local version. I don't feel like rewarding NoA for shutting the door in the face of their fans for so long over this, when every other region got it in a timely manner.

1. The bolded is a huge assumption and I think vastly overestimates the people who are willing to go the trouble of modding the Wii and importing the game who would be interested.

2. Based on this strategy, it's pretty clear Nintendo expects this to be niche, so there not going to expect any kind of serious sales numbers, hence it's unlikely to be a "disaster."

If #1 is a legitimate concern, then I'm wondering how those people manage to go to the trouble of wiping their own arses after a sit down. Modding the Wii could not be more simple, and importing the game even easier...

Nice. Might pick it up if it runs well on Dolphin. Haven't checked but finding the wii in my parents attic? ehhhh

Sometimes even the small inconvenience is enough to prevent someone from playing it. Every time I thought about playing xenoblade I realized I was getting game X or Y in the mail from gamefly or Skyrim/AC:R was coming out in a few weeks etc anyways so I just never bothered. I don't have enough time to play everything I want as is so when a company makes it hard on me (online passes, only releasing in another region, always online DRM) I end up not getting to it unless it's a rental or 10$ used sale 6 months after release.

Ok all these people claiming that they have preordered it......I go to gamestop and can't find the game.

Please....enlighten me.

It would probably take me more time to drive to GameStop, wait in line, get sales-pitched, and drive home then I spent modding my Wii and importing Blade.

As someone who modded his Wii and imported Xenoblade a few months ago, I didn't have much trouble with the process, but nobody else that I know that plays video games is even remotely interested in doing that. It's definitely a hassle to mod and import, and people are afraid of messing up their Wii somehow. /shrug

Yeah, that'll show 'em.

My head hurts at some of these posts.

I'm guessing they're doing it in-store, the website probably needs the "official" announcement before putting it up there.

While there is definitely a barrier of entry here in terms of importing ("I don't trust overseas shipping" or "I don't feel like waiting") and modding ("What if I brick my Wii?" or "I don't feel like going through the hassle"), modding a Wii is (and has been highly stated throughout the 'net) to be the easiest thing to mod this side of burning CDs to play on the Dreamcast. In other words, it really is a 5 minute endeavor.

Still sounds pretty damn lazy if you're really interested in the game. Keep in mind that in order for people in Europe to play PS2 imports you needed a modchip which around 2003 was no less than 70-80€ for the cheapass version. You could try being even more cheap by getting a freeloader (the infamous swap magic) and even then it was a bit less expensive and a pain in the butt to use every time.

LOL, no biggie. I think I also said they were waiting to find a way to do it cheap as possible too. I think "GS Exclusive" is probably it, they probably got paid the cost of something from Gamestop for having it exclusive or got free marketing from them running their own commercials or whatever else.

Nintendo's business strategy is like watching Pawn Stars or something.

"Hey if we drop the Wii down, cut the Gamecube ports out, and get rid of a stand thats a fucking dime for every system sold. One million systems sold, thats $100,000!"

"Yeah and those people asking for Xenoblade, we'll hook Gamespot up and get some free ads and they can sling us a few grand for an exclusive. Yo Shiggy, you still got those 50 steaks in the back of the truck? Lets hit up Tokyo real quick."

i don't know why some people think that all the people interested in the game would have already modded and imported. Not even sure that percentage is that high on gaf

Haha, before reading this thread I hadn't realized "It's Reyn time!" was a ..thing.

I love some of Riki's battle quotes when he refers to everyone as his sidekicks.

Gameplan for next year:

  • Buying a Wii U
  • Buying Skyward Sword
  • Buying Xenoblade
  • Buying Darksiders 2 (confirmed launch title)
  • Buying X other game

And don't you fuckers jump on me for not buying skyward sword right now, I ain't got a Wii.

I'll buy it used from someone, on the condition that we conduct the transaction right in front of a GameStop location so that I can give them a nasty grin and point at the item and money changing hands and go "Huh? huh? You see this, fucksticks? You see this!?"

And then they'll go "Who's that kid outside the store?"

And everyone inside will just shrug.

If this is real I want you all to nothing but praise everything Nintendo damnit and not one of you do any of your "not buy now, too long" bs things. If we are indeed getting the game this is a damn dream come true.

thank you :)

How did Gamestop get to sell this exclusively? Is there zero interest among the big retailers?

You have to realize, GameStop often courts smaller titles (lol) over here and fronts the bill even if they don't sell amazingly.

You heard that right GameStop is PAYING for you to get Xenoblade released here.

Doing you guys a favor, even.

Nice, I mean I already beat the PAL version of Xenoblade, but the game is so good it's worthy of another play through with American voice actors. It was STUPID for them not to release it in US, what surprises me is that it's a GS exclusive. That's what's weird.

Ahh pictures of "Monado" were posted on that page.

So is this confirmed then?

While it is good that the people who didn't import finally have a shot, I still don't think NoA deserves any praise on how they handled that Operation Rainfall fiasco when a simple "We are working on it, expect it in 2012" would have sufficed with 10% the fallout.

SOOOOO LATE...

I'll buy it anyway...to encourage the effort... and not having to patch that fucking ISO to get it to work at 30 FPS on Dolphin with descent sound. I'm Playing on wii just because of that.
