Devil's Third (Itagaki PS360) announced, debut trailer inside

The MW3 part was also pretty funny:

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, there's a Russian Typhoon-class submarine that shows up; have you seen that scene?

There's a mission that shows you getting into the submarine after approaching it. There are two propellers, on the submarine, and they're rotating in the same direction. That's impossible, though, because it wouldn't work to propel the craft; that can't exist in real life. That's the truth, and I speak as a major fan of Modern Warfare who really respects what they've done.
[...]
What do you think about the fact they're showing off a submarine that ignores the laws of physics? It'd be like an airplane flying backwards, and it's surprising to me that something a nonsensical as that went unnoticed by anyone.

give this man a (war) medal.

We all assumed/knew this, but:

With Ninja Gaiden II, we were in the midst of that lawsuit, and there were a lot of distractions on my end during that period, so I'll freely admit that the gameplay isn't as well-balanced as it could have been. So if you're wondering why the balance is off despite all that testing, there is that. (laughs)

The speed of sound is about 340 meters per second, but it fires really quickly, so the fire can reach targets several kilometers away very quickly. Battlefield runs at 30 frames per second on consoles, so it's not possible to actually show it at that frame rate...

...I mentioned that I don't rely on other games while I'm making my own, but that doesn't mean I'm not playing them, either. At that same time, though, if you want to make a real breakthrough in this genre, it's going to have come through realism. So, again, I don't want to be misunderstood here -- I'm really excited about playing Battlefield on both consoles and the PC. I just want gamers to realize the difference between entertainment and reality.

So Devil's Third at 60fps?

Ninja Gaiden and DOA were, so one would assume so. And i doubt it'll drop like NG2 did, since they're taking over 3 years with this one... The game will be released in 2013, so it may even go next-gen...

Itagaki's aim for 32 player battles makes me skeptical about the framerate.

its gotta be next-gen. it fits the rumors for ng launch and would explain why we havent seen it and its HUGE shift to a 2013 title when it was first shown off a year and a half ago

Itagaki is such a magical man. I'm not that interested in fighting games or action games in the vein of Ninja Gaiden (although DOAX was kinda fun for a while), but I can't help but love reading any interview of the guy.

Also, IW owned regarding the propellers on the submarine!

I'm quite late because I hadn't seen the video at first, but you gotta have some balls to put stuff like "From legendary producer...", "comes his next masterpiece", etc.. when your game looks average at best. At least for now.

As for the MW3 comment... eh, nobody really noticed besides him. His comparison to the airplane flying backwards is just too much :p

What? Ninja Gaiden was damn amazing, gameplay and graphically.

As for the MW3 comment... I find that quite stupid to be honest. Yeah, maybe a submarine doesn't work like that, but not many people really knows and I don't think anybody noticed. It's not like, as he said, an airplane flying backwards.

So it's stupid to be aware and knowledgeable, and to expect people making a game that at least has a passing relationship to reality to do their homework about the hardware they're depicting onscreen?

Sorry, meant to say "when your game", not "games". This one looks fine from a technical point of view, but artistically it's plain ugly.

No no no, it's not stupid to be aware and knowledgeable of such things. I think it's kinda out there to point out things like that and then compare them to basic stuff like a plane flying backwards. I mean, I don't think many people noticed the submarine's propellers and said "hey, this is just impossible!" :p

Yeah but someone probably spent a good amount of time making it look like that

and that's all his point was. How does something like that go unnoticed by so many people on the development side? The people that do the research on how military things work to make them as realistic as possible.

A detail missed in a presentation they probably ripped apart looking for inaccuracies and glitches

but he even said it wasn't that important as well lol

I absolutely agree that Itagaki exaggerates with things like saying that "it's like a plane flying backwards." But that's part of his charm :)

Great interview.

I just got a 360 and can't wait to try out some of this guy's games. So: Ninja Gaiden Black, Ninja Gaiden 2, and Dead or Alive 4 are the ones to get?

Yup, and I'd play Black first and then NG2. It's hard going back to Black's combat system after experiencing NG2, but then it's hard to get into NG2 after having played Black's well rounded and balanced AI/gameplay designs. But to get the best experience out of Black, which is the better game, play it first.

Dead or Alive 3 and Dead or Alive Ultimate (DOA1 and DOA2) are backwards compatible too if you want to experience all of his games fighting games.

Yeah. NG2 has the best combat in an action game, but the camera and balance is off (projectiileeees!). Specially the camera, IMO. NGB is better as a whole.

The correct answer to the 'Do I look worried' question, when he took off his glasses should have been for the journalist to have cowered and cried. No mortal looks upon Itagakis soul-less hate filled eye-sockets without fear.

Sounds like things are going well, hype x 1000.

Interesting that they're using an engine from Relic. I'd guess it's the same engine that runs Warhammer: Space Marine, if so that's promising, that's a damn good looking game for what it achieves.

Space Marine looks amazing.

I know nothing bout this game besides the first trailer and i am convinced that itll bomb. I love itagaki and doa, but this will bomb so hard, my guts bever lie

Im a big Itagaki fan as I loved the Ninja Gaiden games, but this game looks like complete garbage. Everything looks so uninspired and the art style does nothing to stand out. Game looks awful and I am sure it will bomb. I was hoping he would make another Ninja Gaiden esque game. This game looks gross.

You referring to that trailer that came out last year? I wouldn't make any judgements yet, especially off of that one trailer.

lol, nice way to bring down a game of which we only have seen a teaser that probably will have anything to do with the game just the concept, guns and swords.

You are no Itagaki fan.

"You already know the answer," he teased Gamasutra, when asked if he was hoping to make the best shooter in the industry, when we spoke to him at E3. "I will do everything I can to achieve that, okay? And to make the best fighting game, it took a long time to do that, but I think I made it. So to make the best game in this genre now, I might take a long time, but I know I'm going to do it."
There's your cause for concern fellas. I've been personally burned by Itagaki and his "best fighting game" and his idea of "best" is lacking in any skill and relying completely on guessing to win. I've never seen a shooter based on Rock, Paper, Scissors so I might be interested to see how this turns out.

TI: I'm not worried, no. [Itagaki removes his sunglasses and leans forward.] Do I look worried?
What does an unworried oatmeal cookie look like?

I thought this was supposed to be another action game, not a shooter. Color me surprised in that regard.

I don't know enough about 3D fighters or DoA to argue

but he made NGB and has some pretty solid design philosophies, so I personally think he's capable of making something good here

What is this even based on? The Teaser we got 3 years before the game was released?

and even then how can you see that and not be excited at the potential of a game like that?(Multiplayer shooter with action game melee and mobility components)

I personally can't wait to see more of this

I don't know how anyone can be uninmpressed by the concept of a third person melee shooter where you are extremelly fast, can jump and wall-run. Specially one made by the man responsible for Ninja Gaiden. The art can be ugly, but so do Bayonetta and Anarchy Reigns. Who gives a shit?

Also, DOA is the only fighting game that is fun to play to anyone, at any level. The only one. Kinda funny how people praise SC for attempting (and failing) at what DOA actually achieves. We need to praise games that try something else, not shun them while pretending to be a "high-level player". The fighting genre is way too alineating, and i say that as a fan of the 2D fighter with the highest skill ceiling for command input of them all (KOF XIII).

I wish we had more fighters that do their own thing - be it luck or otherwise. GAF whines about too many shooters being similar, but they want all fighters to use the same ideas of what is "right" and "wrong" in a fighter. Gambling can be a part of a game too - any game.

Also, even Sirlin says every fighting game is rock-paper-scissors. What you're complaining about is not the RPS system.

Listen, we’re talking about something really important – politics – so we have to make this really clear. Maybe you should ask a question like: “So, are you interested in becoming a political candidate?”

Are you?
No, ask it.

Are you interested in becoming a political candidate?
Yes. There have been some offers for me to become a political candidate in Japan, and we do need a strong leader.

Do you think Japan would accept a leader who dresses like you?
I think so. No, they will. Think about it. Japan is such a hot country, and yet all the current leaders wear suits all the time. Does that make any more sense? I’m much more picky about how I dress. But, you know, there are a lot of things I haven’t done in this industry, so I’ll probably stay in it until I die. After all, I’m a real Japanese; I know to look inside at my own strengths and weaknesses, to know where my individuality lies. I only talk like this because I want people in the UK to know there are people who actually care about these things. Rather than just saying that the Japanese videogame industry is over, really thinking about why.

Everyone else does it too isn't a defense.

I disagree and find that SC has been pretty fun at all levels, but more importantly SC is SC and DOA is DOA. You can defend one game without putting down the other.

Amazing sweeping generalizations.

In regards to the wall running. It has been in both 3rd person form in Dead Space 2 and 1st person form in Aliens v. Predator.

I couldn't care less about anything Sirlin says. His opinion is no more or less valid than anybody else's.

Pretty simple. The graphics didn't look so hot in the teaser, and Itagaki's last game wasn't that great.

I'm not looking forward to it because I hate shooters. If it was melee focused, I'd certainly be more excited. I'm on a wait and see on this one. Really interested in seeing what Itagaki makes next even if I don't particularly care about the game itself.

The second part of what Draft said is by far more important than the graphics.

Itagaki, for me, has been pretty inconsistent between the DoAX games, DoA4, and NG2, he's done as much good as bad.
I'd rather not be doubtful or excited for the game, I don't know much about it yet.

NG2 is a great game, just not as good as the first.
