Well, well, well.

Since the thread went unnoticed a few weeks ago (was too early probably AND posted directly in community as it seems), here is the OP intro from the "original" AOTY 2011 thread by robor:

robor said:
It is time fellow GAF brethren, let us congregate here, in this very thread and share our experiences of today's artists in today's world. Is music dead? Is it alive? Is this year a mark of greater and more inspiring works to come aiding younger artists not yet established in this field? Or are we heading down a spiral of genericism, redundancy and any other viral tropes these faux-artists cling onto and claim as their own (I'm looking at you Jet)?

Was that too dark to start off with? I think so, but hey, sometimes I just like to spill out my disdain for pop culture and it's hemorrhaging leaders thrusting us forward into an ever enclosing entrapment of sludgy filth that's expected by all to be called beauty.

I realize that GAF started discussing this in the What, are you listening too? thread, but not everyone is aware of that guys. Some wait for the AOTY threads to check out some recommendations instead of checking the monthly threads.

So what was your favorite album this year and why was it that good? Also try describing the style of music if they are rather unknown.
If you need a refresher which albums have been released, click here. Lots of lists for the more popular albums that appeared. Following as an example, A.V. Clubs List in pictures as inspiration (Click the albums for their respective albumoftheyear.org link):

I am starting the thread with a mind bending rule change: If you just discovered an artist in 2011 that you are totally in love with, it SHOULD be allowed to be considered and posted as your AOTY, even if that release is from 2010. Just tell us why it is your AOTY, or even why you missed out on it the first time around. Reasoning for that follows in my description of my AOTY:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Magic Man - Real Life Color (Indie/Pop/Electronica)
http://wasfuersohr.blogspot.com/2011/12/magic-man-2010-real-life-color-for-free.html
Everything from the linked review I wrote, still applies. And I think its especially noteworthy to point out that Magic Man managed to champion my favorite album so far, Postal Service - Give Up, which is quite a feat. They also share a somewhat similar sound classification/feeling, just a bit "softer", and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the guys behind Magic Man take a liking to the sound of Postal Service as well.
The reason for me to name this album as my AOTY, is simply that it would be a disservice NOT to name it at that. This record reached me on a very personal level (see review above) and makes me unbelievably happy listening to it, something about it makes me almost desperate to share them with anyone I know. Digital music doesn't really age, and I guess most people haven't heard of them yet, so I give them a second chance to shine by showing my appreciation to you, and hopefully find a few more willing to listen to them. I already got word by the artists that this indeed MAKES a difference and they even pondered whether they should continue making music at all. Our, mine, YOUR appreciation to artists, especially small ones, makes a huge difference. If there is any band that you really like, write them a message somewhere. Almost every band appreciates that a lot and it might ensure that they dont stop making what you loved about them. Music in general is definitely poorer for every artist giving up, and the only thing it sometimes takes as "pay" is a heads up.
As in this case, as this is album is even FREE. Please do the artists a favor and check it out. Appreciating these kind of small bands makes the difference between more variety in the music scene or bands just giving up before anyone ever heard of them.
(For the record, I know the band for about 6-8 months now, but I just wrote the review yesterday)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And if everyone is nice to each other, and we got enough suggestions for it, I'll make a GAF AOTY 2011 Wallpaper with our favorite albums in small like the above pictures. I love album covers :)

Okay, enough for now. I poured enough heart into it, whats the record that impressed you the most? Tell us about it :) Hopefully we'll get a few impressions here.

Justice - Audio, Video, Disco

I was nervous about it when they said it would be a lot different from their first album, but my expectations were blown away. Just an awesome album with awesome songs. My favorites are "Newlands", "Helix", "Civilization", and "Canon".

Originally it was going to be Blazo's Colors of Jazz, or Kuniyuki Takahashi's We Are Together, or Colin Stetson's New History Warfare Vol.2: Judges, but...

these guys are incredible. Jazz meets hiphop meets... rock? It's incredible R&B.

My top 5, with only a picture for the first one. I don't want to have too many images up in here. :p

1- James Blake - James Blake
db755fd9e2c84c92fcf323f6d61516051556f0e1.jpg

There's just so much to love about this album. Incredible production, incredible vocals, and incredible songs. It's even more impressive when you consider his work before this was all pretty club like stuff; and this was just a huge change of pace. Slower, more truly song oriented compositions. With each listen, I swear I can hear something else new going on in these songs, depending on the speakers I'm listening to it on. Brilliant album. From here on outtttt...

2- Bon Iver - Bon Iver
3- Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
4- Girls - Father, Son, Holy Ghost
5- Mastodon - The Hunter

Runner up: Washed Out - Within and Without

Edit - Dang, I'm looking at a lot of lists and it seems like people really have forgotten about the James Blake record. Hrm.

Wow, they made a new one? Definitely need to check that out when I get to it. I'll listen to the tracks on youtube now, thanks for mentioning.

Trivium - In Waves

I'm usually the guy who loves a band but takes a very long time to warm up to a new album. Shogun was and still is my favorite album from them but In Waves had a few standouts that I rank up with the best of theirs. "Capsizing The Sea" was such an awesome way to set the mood for the rest of the album.

1. Emancipator - Remixes (Upon further reading of OP, I would actually select 'Safe In the Steep Cliffs' from 2010.. but either is good)
2. The Flashbulb - Love As A Dark Hallway
3. Nujabes - Spiritual State

Purely from what I have listened to, and note that I have a shitload of 2011 to still listen to, Mine would have to be Bon Iver - Bon Iver. Though it's a close call between that and my honourable mentions.

Honorable Mentions: M83, Laura Marling, Florence, Foster the People, Cults.

That may change at some point, but I can still go back to and constantly listen to about 5 songs on that album continuously.

I really haven't listened to enough new music this year.

Oh gosh I forgot about "The King is Dead."

So it's a tie.

"The King is Dead" by the Decemberists. This was my summer album. Perfect whilst driving through the countryside and farming country for my job. Definitely pared down and more simplistic than previous albums. Good stuff.

Featuring "Don't Carry it All"

"El Camino" by The Black Keys. I know it just came out but got dang.

Featuring "Little Black Submarines"

Did you guys like it as much as the first one? Might need to check it out then, but I was sort of thinking that they wouldnt be able to top the first one anyway and kinda forgot about the release (as with almost all releases this year).

I haven't been keeping up with new music as much as I have in previous years, but my AOTY is Snowman - Absence

Snowman-absence-300x300.jpg

I've never been really eloquent when it comes to discussing my favorite music, so I'll try and keep it brief. This album is dark, unsettling, but also quite pretty at times; similar to the Liars' Drums Not Dead, except more ethereal and less revolved around percussion specifically.

Tracks:
Hyena
White Wall
Absence
Full Album Stream (Soundcloud)

Mother Mother - Eureka

This album for me was incredibly anticipated as their previous album was amazing and I was hoping their 3rd album would be just as good and to my surprise it surpassed the previous one.Most probably haven't heard of these guys, they are a Canadian band that are slowly coming up and gaining more appeal in Europe. I really like this band and their unique songs and their harmonies are great between the three singers.I also had the chance to see these guys live when promoting this album and it blew me away

Here are three sample songs from the album.

Personally I liked it more. It feels more developed, where the first really feels more stripped down. Different sounding records, but both very good.

Honestly it's a very different album, I love them both for very different reasons.

Thematically and stylistically For Emma is a lot more consistent, and as a result has less variety then the second album, but equally it doesn't have the problem of me disliking any of the songs in particular like I do with 1 or 2 in Bon Iver.

They're both awesome though.

My man! This album seems to have gone severely underlooked this year.

It has to be Clams Casino's Instrumental mixtape for me.

Whatever your feelings are for the rappers he produces for, these songs by themselves are just stunning.
It was probably also the album of 2011 to shape my taste in music.

I was really out of the music game this year. As such, I can only really give one option...

10429.jpg

Still good since February.

I got bored of the Fleetfoxes pretty quickly. :-/ Just not my bag.

Uhh...yeah. I don't even know how to get new music anymore really.

Haven't listened to the Radiohead album in ages, and Explosions in the Sky was okay but not totally memorable.

So...Mogwai.

Explosions in the Sky: Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

Honorable Mentions: Florence, Decemberists, TV on the Radio
If I was being totally objective it would probably go to Ceremonials but I have a serious boner for EitS.
