Whatcha Been Playin': Backlog Burner Edition

SovanJedi

provides useful feedback
...well Atom Zombie Smasher was a short game! But really fun. I'm glad I played it; someday I'll have a go at it with all the Easy Mode settings turned off and a longer campaign.

Next on the list; Aquaria. I started playing it not long after the Humble Indie Bundle it came with (the first one?) but I just couldn't get into it at first. This time though, I'm going in for the kill, mwahaha.

Skyrim

I think i'm like 20 or so hours into it but I think I'm getting to that point where I'm just getting bored of it. The quests have started to feel really repetitive and my dislike of the combat system is starting to hinder my enjoyment of the game. That said, I'm still really impressed with how much there is in the world. When I first started I really got into it and I loved just running around and exploring new areas, but now I'm just feeling a bit fatigued from it. Maybe I'll take a break from it for the time being.

Katawa Shoujo

I finished up the Emi, Shizune, and Lilly paths and I'm not sure If I want to finish the other two since I don't feel as interested in them. Even still I enjoyed this VN a lot more than I thought I would from when I first heard about this. I literally went from "WTF is dis shit" to "This VN is awesome!"

Lilly is <3

Battlefield 3

I took a bit of a break from it but I started playing a bit more last night. My aim is still really bad but I still love this game (even when I'm raging at my shitty random teammates)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Played through this and the two DLC chapters earlier this week. At first I wasn't really sure if I was going to enjoy it very much but once I began to unlock more of the relics and approached the castle stages near the middle I started to have a lot of fun with it. I thought that the titan boss fights were pretty bad and felt like a poor attempt at SotC type encounters but the rest of the boss fights felt great and using the light and shadow magic during them was really satisfying. I didn’t think that the DLC chapters where as strong as anything in the main game but I’m looking forward to a full sequel if it ever comes.

Inazuma Eleven
Just reached Chapter 5 last night. I haven’t really bothered too much with recruiting other players and have just been sticking the original line-up for the most part. All of the full matches have been easy enough so far and I don’t think that I’ve lost a single one, so I’m curious to see if it starts getting any trickier soon.

Dungeons of Dredmor
Defeated Lord Dredmor on my birthday so this is a nice fitting picture. Going through again now on a non-permadeath playthrough to get all the "Death by _____" achievements including Dredmor himself.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
I finished Phantom Hourglass a couple weeks ago and decided I wanted to start in on this. Still not sure why people around here seem to dislike the DS Zelda games so much.

Brought back a lot of original Xbox games to college with me after digging them up back at my folks' place. So this weekend is basically all of these:

My friend lent me Assassin's Creed Revelations and Battlefield 3 for Skyrim and Gears 3, BUT both require an online pass for the MP. I wasn't aware of this until I started playing. Definitely the lamest trend this gen. Still enjoying the SP for both games though.

Playing a hefty mix lately.

Battleheart (iPad) - Distills MMO-style party and skill management into an arcade setup, glad I saw the recommendation for this, really good.

SffyJ.png

100 Rogues (iPad) - A pretty darn good Rogue-like, nice aesthetics and music and the high-score nature of this one works really well. Eventually I'll dip into the DLC since it's a meaty title sold for peanuts. I like this piece-meal style of DLC when it's done like this.

XobHF.jpg

SWTOR (PC) - Our duo keeps on keepin' on, Alderaan was a pretty boring planet until the back half but it's been good the last bit and it's almost over now. Loving the hell out of my Operative, love the story and aesthetics on it a lot and the healing model is superb, I'd really like Star Wars in general I think if it was more about the non-Force fare.

3h8lQ.jpg

Corpse Party (PSP) - Great lil' survival horror/visual novel mix. Has it's awkward bits but it's as gruesome and soul crushing as I've seen a horror game be. Closing in on the end now, been just picking at it for ages.

0F8pm.jpg

Cladun x2 (PSP) Sequel to one of my favorite PSP games and of 2010. Really high quality lil' retro styled dungeon crawler. Great dungeon designs, combat, customization up the wazoo, etc.

Famicom Detective Club Part II

This was great. It was a fairly well told mystery story with twists, turns, and several unsettling moments. It's interesting to see not only how far the Super Famicom could go in terms of narrative presentation, but also how far Nintendo would go in content.

SerlV.png

Braid

So far, it's easy to see why this is considered an indie masterpiece, with a gorgeous and completely realized artstyle joined with a sometimes insane puzzle design that delivers those really satisfying "AHA!" moments. I've been spoiled on the ending but I'm still interested in seeing how it ties in with the pre-stage texts.

lithnews_f3ar1310435376.jpg

It's a lot of fun. Sure, it's repetitive (machine guns against solders > shotguns against zombie freaks > repeat), but it's challenging, which is what I was looking for.

I bought it from Green Man Gaming (and redeemed it with Steam) a few days ago for $6.50. When I logged into my account to complete the purchase, I discovered a $5.00 credit waiting for me. The game is fantastic for a buck fifty.

Started my week by finishing Global Ops: Commando Libya, played through Shadows of the Damned over the weekend and also got the two final trophies I was missing from Trine 2.

Global Ops was just horrible with bad dialog, bad characters, graphics from six years ago and still I played through it because my friend offered me a beer or two if I finished it.

Shadows of the Damned on the other hand was one of the most entertaining games I've encountered. Gameplay may not be top-notch, but the characters made this one of my favorite games from last year.

Finished Dark Souls on the 360, have bought it on PS3 and am doing it all over again. A game hasn't grabbed me like this for a long, long time.

Also started MW3 recently. The single player is ok so far, no where near as epic as MW2 felt but good non the less. The new additions to spec ops are awesome!
I can't believe Soap died! :'(

Binding of Isaac. Closing in on 10 hours, still no mom. Can't make it far into the depths yet :(

DNF_MorningWood-700x393.jpg

So, DNF. It's not as terrible as I expected going in, but that's about it. The highway/ghost town section is pretty decent and the shooting-heavy sections are okay, it's just that the game is filled with these lame platforming/traversal sections that slow the pacing to a crawl. I just finished an underwater bomb planting section and I never want to go through that again, ever.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey: It's basically Nocturne on a portable with some elements of Etrian Odyssey, i.e. great. Incredible music, too.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future: Never played one of these. Picked it up for $10. Charming.

Where is my Heart?: Hurts my head. Great aesthetics. I wonder if being buried in PS Minis has hurt this game's sales.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars: I like that there's sub-missions where you choose your party. The classes are differentiated enough that it's meaningful. Game is super ugly though, and the 3D only helps a little. When the portraits smile, it looks ridiculous, like a Tim & Eric thing.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Just beat LA Noire. Finishing out the open world junk to get 1400/1400 achievements. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Shit game, but I quite enjoyed the characters, world, presentation, and story beats.

Might get back into Dark Souls next. Left off near the end when Batman hit.

I'm taking a short break from Majora's Mask since the beginning part is a bit slow. I've only finished up the few sidequests and obtained the available masks one can find in the Clock Town. It already feels pretty different from the other Zelda game and not just because of the time mechanic. Putting on the Deku Mask is kind of freak by the way.

I started a new file for Sin & Punishment 2 with the Isa & Kachi mode. My skills must be rusty since I've died three times already on easy mode and I've only gotten to the lava stage after the desert.

Resonance of Fate

(but the 360 version)
It's quite the unusual RPG, I like it so far, but I also only played 2 hours of it. The battle system is nice and a lot more fun than these classic battle systems (so far), but there are still some things I don't know how to do them , like these nice special moves or the tri-attack thing. I personally wished that you could explore more of Basel.

My friend convinced me to play this game, and I'm in love with it. So fucking complicated though. Three hours passed without me realizing it. I am scared to think how much I'll play once I understand the mechanics.

I just finished BATMAN AC so now I'll keep doing some quests on Skyrim

v9Gnpl.jpg

In order to clean my not-so-big Backlog I'm going to start one of these:

- White Knight Chronicles 2 (PS3)
- inFAMOUS 2 (PS3)
- Rage (360)
- Dead Island (PS3)

I want to start with the shortest and leave the longest to last, if anyone have finished those and can recommend me which one is the shortest thanks a lot my fellow GAFfers!

Persona 3: FES

Up to the final "month" in the game, the final climb up Tartarus, a few more bosses to go and then the final battle. Should have it finished by the end of the week.

Brain Lord

Underrated SNES action RPG that suffers from slight hit-detection issues and slowdown. I only played through the first dungeon but it had some cool gameplay and puzzles, can't wait to continue with it.

Combichristoffersen

Combovers don't work when there is no hair
Finished Ico, which was OK, if flawed (clunky combat, sluggish controls and terribad camera). Started Shadow of the Colossus. Horse controls are complete shit as usual, and figting/climbing the colossi is kinda janky and not really all that fun. But at least you can control the camera now.

I just sold a good amount of games through Craigslist. About 25 from my backlog of which many were gifts. I went away with $400 and it's surely at a loss, but I feel great getting rid of all that mess. I recently picked up a PS3 and maybe I'll start over there, only buying games as I play them.

Anyway, I'm working on Bioshock 2 on the 360 at the moment. It feels like a giant expansion for the first game, but it's very well done and a lot more interesting than I expected.

Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars - 3DS: Still slowly moving along. I think I'm almost near the end though. Not in any rush to finish it as I have to really be in the mood.

Skyrim - PC: I jumped on a sale Steam had a few weeks ago when it was down to $40. I've put about 37 hours into it so getting close to $1 for 1 hour worth of entertainment. However I just want to finish up the main story (and get back to Skyward Sword as I took a break from it to play this.) as I'm getting bored with the game. So putting in this much time and not going back to it after I finish won't bother me at all. Things that were exciting have just become a chore or annoying. The game is just to big for my liking and some areas are a pain to ge to while making sure not to lose or get my companion killed. Strange though I didn't have this with the recent Fallout games. Then again that could be because I'm more of a scifi fan (certain things weren't as bothersome) than a fantasy fan and norse imagery is getting a bit tiresome.

Battlefield 3 - PC: I'm wondering if I should even be including this. I've been doing a few matches a night and really I just use it to relax for the most part. I've long since finish the single player campaign. Have no use for the co-op stuff. It's no longer being "played" for completion. Same goes for Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS. It's just now being played for the online when want to race. Same has ended up for Ridge Racer 3D even though I haven't finished all the races as there are so many of them.

Super Mario 3D Land - 3DS: Almost done with all the worlds and I'm looking forward to the stages after that. Some of the later stages have started to kick my butt though as I try to go for all the medals every time I play a new stage. This really is the only portable game that I play when I'm out and have a few minutes to spare. I rarely play it when I'm at home strangely.

I spent most of last gen with just an xbox, so I'm slowly working my way through the ps2 library.

MGS3 I like everything about it except the controls, which means it's a kojima game
xenosaga If I beat this, it'll be the first JRPG I've actually completed in like a decade.

Battlefield 3 PC : Still my go to multiplayer game

Batman Arkham City PC : Loving this game right now, playing through it for the first time

Renegade Ops PC : Finally finished the main story now on to Coldstrike DLC

Super Crate Box IOS : My god I think this is the most time I have ever dumped into a IOS game yet. Super addictive

PS3: Finished up Skyrim yesterday. Debating on Uncharted 3 or going back to finish Sly Cooper 1 from the Sly Collection.

360: Bastion and Magic 2012

iOS: Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer, It's a great card battler!

I'm getting back into Pikmin 2. I rented this back when it was released, but there was a huge amount of game left over that I never got to, so I'm starting over now. For whatever reason I can't seem to make myself play more than one day at a time. It's just so...final. Whatever; great game, can't wait to see where it goes next. Someday.

I got this game in iOS, the mechanic is nice but for an iOS title, it needs more monetization. (For the people that would spend money, not for any GAFfers of course. Just the mindless masses)

Uhh.. anyway, I also got it on PC and honestly I don't know how games like this get so huge, when even the tutorial must be replayed in its entirety every time you die. So instead of an easy lvl1 to get you into the action, you have to replay this tutorial multiple times. And honestly, the mechanics are SO simple, you don't need to keep teaching someone about them. They just need to be able to start kicking ass and getting BETTER at them.

Anyway it's a cool game.

Also playing Hero Academy.

Thinks mods influence posters politics. Promoted to QAnon Editor.
Rage - Got bored about 4 hours in, I like Wellspring, but when the game play kicks in I'm bored.

Dues Ex: HR - Maybe 1 hour in, need to force myself to play more, feels like ME with less Sci-Fi.

GT5 - I keep coming back for more. New DLC, new seasonals, have over 240 cars now.

Dark Souls - My buddy has been calling me up for some co-op to help me complete the game.

I think I am burnt out, too many games in too little time, nothing is grabbing my attention. I might go back to infamous 2 and start the evil playthrough with the Move. I also have the urge to play some old school style JRPG, so I have been looking for a deal on WKC2.

Just bought this off PSN for $9.99.

Sly_Cooper_and_the_Thievius_Raccoonus_Coverart.png

Enjoying it more than any of the Ratchet titles I've played this generation.

IMHO, Sly and Jak should have gotten next gen versions long before the Ratchet and Clank titles did.

Finally got around to playing Resident Evil- The Umbrella Chronicles, and it hasn't disappointed in the dialogue department. "I'm sorry Forrest... I'll miss our target practice sessions". "Chris..." I had to pause the game to crack up.

Been really busy recently, but...

Ghost Trick (DS) - Making my way through this slowly, but man, it's awesome. The animation is insanely good and the soundtrack is terrific, too.

Persona 3 Portable (PSP) - Just started. I've never played anything in the SMT series, so I'm hoping to get hooked and have another RPG series to sink my teeth (and funds) into. Crazy looking at the PSP screen after playing so many DS and 3DS games recently. Looks really beautiful!

Kingdom Hearts (PS2) - Another series I never got into. This game is *really* rough. Controls are loose and the camera is almost a deal-breaker at this point. I also don't like how aimless things seem... vague cutscene leads to you just wandering around the world until you trigger something. Pretty weak design. Gummi Ship is also such a poor implementation. That being said, graphics, music, and the storyline are keeping me going. Too bad the game's core is so sloppy, though.

Finished Skyward Sword and beat/got all the trophies in Infamous 2: Festival of Blood.

Skyward Sword was good, but the game dragged on way too long. I'm glad to have finally finished it. The ending was nice, too.

Festival of Blood was short but satisfying, and I had fun chasing down all the items and bits of Bloody Mary's story. Reminded me how much fun I had with Infamous 2 proper.

Then I dove into Costume Quest (I have no idea why I'm on a Halloween kick right now) and I'm LOVING this game so far. Art style is really cool, the writing is cute and genuinely funny, and the gameplay is simple but really enjoyable and fun. Looking forward to playing more of it.

Never finished it 4 years ago and just got it back. Kinda annoyed that I don't have my save file anymore (sold my old system), but I don't remember the story enough to care. Really enjoying the turn-based gameplay. IMO, this is the best turn-based RPG this generation.
