rFactor 2 Beta Thread: Which will crash more often; it or us?

Decided to hook up my 360 controller as I haven't gotten around to ordering an HDMI cable yet for my TV, to get the G27 + Seat going. Positive side is, there's a default profile. Negative side is, it's unplayable. On default, you can barely touch the stick without the wheel going bonkers and car spinning off, even with a huge deadzone and sensitivity set to 0% it's pretty much unplayable.

Er.. Yeah this is a wheel specific game. Lol. I can't imagine trying to drive the 60s cars with a controller.

Anyway speaking of the 60s cars it's very obvious that those tracks and cars got the most work put into them. They just feel and look the best. The other series I think are fine but the whole game just needs more work at this point with optimization and the very obvious graphical effects that are missing. Maybe I was expecting a bit too much with it being a beta and all.

I'm just excited modders get a higher quality sandbox to play in.

Try enabling steering stability (F1 or F2 button). That might make it easier to control.

Nope, sure it stays on the track but the problem is that barely touching the stick translates into turning the steering wheel between 90* and 180* - It's insane.

Man I wish they could have built an entire 67 F1 season.

I know modders will build the remaining tracks, but not like the ones included. There's just such atmosphere to them.

If they could have included everything, I think it'd become my favorite racer of all-time. There's just something zen about those two tracks. So freaking good.

When I'm not jumping a fence and cursing them for making me restart the session because I'm stuck without a way to get back on the track.

Have you considered sucking less? :p

Yes. And after careful deliberation, it's been determined that's not an option.

Things are slowly improving. I've got Spa pretty well down now. But still, some of those crashes in no way justify the outcome. I doubt barely clipping some hay would really turn me into Top Gun circling the moon.

Team RMT already has part of its WSGT2 content in rFactor 2. :)

Cool. And although I didn't immediately appreciate it, the mod system does seem like a 1000 percent improvement. Hope it holds up and you can add 50 different series without anything breaking.

How well would this run on my old E8400/GTX275?

If I can't maintain at least 60fps @ 720p (ideally 1920x810) minimum details I won't consider it.

I would think you're good to go. I have a GTX 460 and Q9400 overclocked at 3.4Ghz.

I'm running 1080P with everything on max/turned on. Locked at 60fps (D3D v-sync), my GPU tends to sit around 65 percent utilization. Quick benchmark comparison says your 275 is only about 5-10 percent slower than a 460? So you should be good there.

CPU doesn't seem to be stressed at all. I'll take a look next time I play and edit if need be, but I'm pretty sure my main core is not touching 3 Ghz. And I don't think it's using the 3rd and 4th core a whole lot. Again, I'll edit if it's wrong.

Now will mods increase needs in the future? Sure. Am I playing with 20 cars on the grid and rain? No. So I'm not sure I could maintain 60fps with max settings in that situation. But if your bar is 60fps @ 720P and minimal settings... you'll clear that hurdle without even jumping.

I didn't even know the playable beta was out, these guys really have do some better PR because the (previous) game is awesome.

Woah, that is pretty cool. I don't think cross ply tires wear that way, but it's still cool nevertheless.

The track rubbers in too - also neat.

Finally got around to trying Joesville. Fun.

So, ah, yeah. I love this game. I've been on a run of racing game purchases that have been disappointing to varying degrees. This game rocks!

Finally stopped being lazy, found a cheap Mini-HDMI -> HDMI Cable and it should be here soon. I really can't wait to give this a proper go, tried all the casual options like keyboard and as mentioned, 360 controller but the default configurations are horrible. So I'm expecting wonders with a wheel. Think I might record my first virgin run for horrific crashes and / or grandma' style driving.

As for the whole modding scene, my biggest anticipation is the normal every day cars. Fast racers are fun and all but I enjoy normal cars so much more. I love the feel of the slower cars and the competitive racing becomes that much more competitive when little mistakes don't hit you in the face with a massive hammer.

Thing #1 – I love the idea of you recording your first few laps and my advice is to record the replay afterwards.

Thing #2 – My most anticipated car is the 140hp rTrainer.

I should have recorded my virgin run on Spa. I kept missing in the same spot and bouncing off the roof of a two story.

Gahhh I wish I had the money to pre-order this right now, I have a feeling I would be loving the hell out of this game from what you guys are showing/talking about. Oh well, back to Forza and the Historic GT mod for rFactor uno until payday.

So, I think I want in. I assume this'll be the sim that most people stick with? And I just pay for the full game now, get 18 months online (subscription-based? Boo!) and the beta which has a decent bit of content in it?

Apologies for all the questions, just want to get it straight before I lunge in head-first.

Saved Controller Profile and Controller.ini:
Steering effects strength = 7000
Steering torque filter = 8
Jolt magnitude = 1.00000

In-game:
FFB = 1.0

Profiler:
Overall Effects = 100%
Spring Effect = 5%
Damper Effect = 10%
Center Spring = 0% (box checked)
Degrees of Rotation = 900
Allow Game to Adjust Settings = box checked

Got these settings from a thread on the rfactor forums. Work really well. Although somebody suggested you can lower the torque filter to 4 and still not have issue, I experimented and kept it at 8.

Yes. Although some people have different standards as to what decent bit of content is. I'm satisfied with it atm. If you're expecting a full game off the bat, maybe not.

Ok, grabbed the beta today and downloading the extra stuff as we speak. Now, there are no cars or anything to pick in game atm, that is because I haven't finished installing those extra downloads, correct?

Correct

INSTALLING CARS/TRACKS:

Simply drop the RFMOD file you have downloaded into the Packages directory and then use either Option 1 (outside of the software) or Option 2 (inside the software) to install it.

Notes:
By default, the packages directory is located at /My Documents/rFactor2/Packages/ and you may wish to include the /My Documents/rFactor2/ directory in your regular backup schedule.

Option 1: You may want to configure which content RFMOD packages (cars and tracks) are active before you launch rFactor 2 for the first time. To do this, click the Manage Mods button at the bottom-right of the Simulate tab on the launcher. A new window will open and it will automatically read your packages directory for RFMOD files. Right-click on any mod in this window to see options available to you.

Option 2: Launch rFactor 2 into single or multiplayer and you will see either a series option (single player) or mod management option (multiplayer). The software will automatically read your packages directory for available mods, and you can click install or update right inside the software.

rFactor 2 only supports DX9.0c, and based on my experience with pCARS, I'm not sure it would really benefit from DX11.

Wtf, I have all settings at Ultra and high and it looks like a blurry mess. Huh, that is really odd. Maybe my texture files are corrupt, because it is definitely not nearly as detailed look as all of the screens I have seen.

Yeah. Something is wrong. I have everything maxed out and it's sharp as can be at 1080P.

Which is great, because this game is so good.

Up until yesterday, I pretty much only played Spa during practice. When I did the whole practice, qualifying, race sequence, I realized each was taking place at a different time of day. And the race had significantly different lighting than practice. It was downright beautiful.

I mean, yeah, there's some fugly placeholders sitting around. But if you're screaming around that track in an F2 or F1 car, things are so fast and violent it all looks great.

If you keep posting videos like that, i'm not gonna be able to resist the purchase. That looked like a lot of fun to race multiplayer! Crap music choice though :)

Only when having good drivers, it can go wrong very fast with those things.

What the hell is up with default controller configurations in this game? It's starting to annoy me.

Finally get my Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable, hook up everything and I'm ready to race - Oh no you don't. Loading the G27 configuration and there's still something weird with the controllers. Both the brake pedal and gas pedal move the "throttle" slider in controls. It starts in the middle and pressing the brake pedal gives it full gas, hitting the gas pedal bottoms it out. The brake slider however is applied in full force and nothing moves it.

EDIT: Okay, spent almost an hour calibrating this thing, using setups posted here and now making my own and I've come to the conclusion; I won't be playing it until they do something about the G27. Everything just feels so off, the wheel is overly sensitive even when you've turned down everything. I tried doing a simple race and I keep slowly going from side to side because the TINIEST movement of the wheel will make the car swerve. Adding a deadzone to eliminate it, even a slight one just numbs the feeling completely. The whole force feedback situation is just stupid, most setups want you to turn it off because it's completely out of whack right now. That further numbs the feeling and even with a slight bit of FF enabled, what is actually going on on-screen versus what you feel doesn't correlate whatsoever.

Right now the game has the worst default setups I've seen in any racer. Hopefully this will be corrected fast, as I won't be playing it until it's fixed.

For everybody: I just tried both of these tweaks and they made a significant difference. The micro-stuttering is gone and the FFB is now much better on the grass (I'm using Steering torque filter="8").

For Sethos: I have a G27 and in the Logitech profiler I have the box checked for "Allow Game To Adjust Settings". In rF2 you can see my settings below (360º rotation) and then in the race garage I change the Megane's steering lock to 16.5º.

Micro-stutter? Yuck. Were you having it for everything, or just long races? That's something I thankfully have not had.

With regards to your picture, I did adjust the max left and max right on the steering wheel. Don't remember to what, just what I felt good with.

I just did my first online race and it went well despite not being used to the premissions for driving aids and missing the qualifying session.

Six laps: started 21st, finished 7th

:)

Meganes at Mills (long) I guess? Nice going up the positions!

I tried my first race against bots yesterday in an F3 at Mills, I definitely need to practice a bit to be more consistent, I spin out ever four laps or so.

What sensitivity do you guys use on gas/brake/clutch?

I'm running 100% on both gas and brakes, but clutch just feels a lot better to me a 0%.

Edit: Ohhh and a question here, for the Joesvilles Speedway track, where am I supposed to put the folder? I can see the track when selecting one, but every time I try to load it, the game crashes, I definitely did something wrong.
