With the exception of FFV I played all of them to some extent, but only beaten a handful. The only reason I never played V was coz I dont actually own a copy of...but thanks to PSN I can now play that too.

Blech. The PS1 versions of the SNES FFs are so bad.

You're better off trying to track down a copy of FFV Advance (the definitive version of the game, at least in the US). A used copy doesn't cost all that much.

Not to mention that the translation is superior.

Gonna cave in for the original's iOS port. Heard of a sound issue, but I'm down for replaying FFI. I firmly believe it encapsulates the spirit of Final Fantasy.

I am playing XIII after I stopped playing it about a year ago. I was thinking of also trying to finish XII, but man that game was a bit of a chore. Something about it just rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm down with this. Playing FF XIII at the moment and loving every minute of it. From what I've heard in reviews the sequel is even better.

This is one of the best looking games I've played in a LONG time. As far as enjoyability I would put this right there with Lost Odyssey.

Because FF1 is sooooooo much more advanced. :)

It is orders of magnitude more advanced, solely by virtue of letting you attack specific monsters.

In Dragon Quest 2 and 3 (and who knows for how much longer; not me) the monsters will gang up on one guy, yet you can only attack groups. So you can't coordinate attacks, and it cuts off a lot of potential strategy. You learn to work with it, work around it...but Final Fantasy just left it in the dust by absolutely nailing the battle system. FF1 is like chess compared to DQ2+3's slots. If the cornerstone of your game is going to be battling, and you advertise it as a strategic sort of game in which you have to use your mind instead of reflexes, you need to give the player as much freedom as possible.

At least it wasn't like the first Dragon Quest, where they literally promised that on the back of the box even though the game has virtually no strategy involved.

I still like Dragon Quest though, but Final Fantasy was way ahead of the game at that time. Phantasy Star's battle system be damned as well; it's even worse.

I still haven't played FF2 yet... >__>

Also, full disclosure...I haven't yet beaten DQ3. I'm at the pyramid...The day/night system is awesome.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
Think I'll join in on this, though I'm going to skip a handful. Gonna skip II, III, and V, and VI. II because I hate it, III because I just dont want to slog through it, and V and VI because I finished playthroughs of both of them within the last 6 months.

I've been wanting to do this for awhile, especially since Final Fantasy 1 is my favorite Final Fantasy. We'll see how that goes.

The first one is so underrated. It was a huge deal when it hit the NES. All my friends were playing it. I used Fighter , Thief, Red Mage , Black Mage. I had no idea if it was a good party or not. I barely beat chaos, only the red mage was left alive (one more hit would have killed me) and i killed him with one last swing of the sword. One of my greatest childhood moments.

Oh yeah and I named the Red Mage "Cool".

How cool is that?

I mentioned it in the other thread but I'm currently replaying FFIV on PSP for the bajillionth time, it always feels like my first time.

I know that the Japanese version of Chrono Trigger doesn't have the loading issues that the US version does, but can somebody tell me if that's also the case for FFVI? Wondering if it would be more worth it to get a JP PSN Card and just play that version

So in the stream, I made up to them becoming L'cie.

I still like XIII. I know the beginning can be a hode podge of random terms and just general confusion. But I just think it's very interesting with whats going on. While I think the Purge is'nt played up as good as it could be. I do think it's a very cool and dark thing to start a game off with. I also really like the exchange between Light and Snow when they find Serah. Good drama and development there. You can tell Light is just trying to compete with Snow and her anger at him is more then just that he's a all talk bum, but also because Serah actually trusts him more then her.

What can I say? I like the game.

I'll continue streaming/playing more of it tomorrow. I hope some more peeps tune in and thanks to those that did.

Right now: I plan on playing XIII, VI, XII, and I'm already on a X playthrough. I plan to stream all these as well hopefully. XIII-2 is a no though.

How JAMMIN' is that?!

what are the great, must-play FF games?

Most people agree that Final Fantasy VI is the best one. Since these threads usually devolve into people ranking their favorites, we did a vote a couple years ago.

Semi-official GAF rank
  1. Final Fantasy 6
  2. Final Fantasy 7
  3. Final Fantasy 9
  4. Final Fantasy 4
  5. Final Fantasy 10
  6. Final Fantasy 12
  7. Final Fantasy 5
  8. Final Fantasy 8
  9. Final Fantasy 11
  10. Final Fantasy 10-2
  11. Final Fantasy 13
  12. Final Fantasy 1
  13. Final Fantasy 3
  14. Final Fantasy 2

Haha, this is a pretty funny question to ask. Asking it in a room filled with people is going to get a lot of answers and almost all of them will be completely different. A lot of people will say one game in the series is their favorite, and then a near equal amount will say that same game ruins the franchise.

So rather than a list of the best that'll get contradicted completely by another poster, here's what might be the most discussed games in the main series, generally due to having a higher volume of supporters/detractors:

FFVI (6)
FFVII (7)
FFIX (9)
FFX (10)
FFXII (12)

FFIV and FFVIII also get a lot of love/hate, but to a lesser extent than those other five.

Edit: Kind of beaten with a better response, but it's neat how accurate my list ended up being I guess!

thanks everyone, i guess i'll play iv through x and xii. tactics looks like another favorite, any other important spin-offs?

and is my intuition correct on the direct sequels and MMOs being of lower quality?

oh, you should definitely play final fantasy tactics, too.

The direct sequels have lower production value, but also more interesting complexity when it comes to battle systems. Many fans prefer X-2 and XIII-2 to their predecessors.

I really enjoyed Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, but I think all other spin-off titles are somewhere between mediocre and good.

Looks like the perfect time to crack open my copy of IX for PSX(yes i call it the psx).

To this day i have yet to play it, also picked up 2 boxed copies of 1+2 for GBA and IV for GBA, haven't played those either, matter a fact i have only ever played and beat VII,VIII,X, XII and XIII

A lot of dudes loved Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles under the right conditions, but these days it's probably even less convenient to assemble all that junk.

FFXI wasn't terrible but it's not a super notable or great MMO. FFXIV was so awful that the developers are currently in the process of essentially replacing it with a new game.

FFX-2 had a great battle system and a pretty terrible story. Ditto FFXIII-2, if the demo is any indication.

I'm playing XII International right now and it's really really good, I'm feeling overwhelmed by how big the game is. I'm in the Sandsea right now, and there are a lot of branches in the map. Do you suggest to go forward to the Tomb of Raithwall or to take my time and explore all?

Never finished 1, 2, 3 (never played), 5, 6 and 9 (+ the MMOs) but I don't really want to play them unless there is some sort of remake (for 5, 6 and 9 only).
But I'll surely play FFX again on Vita if it's released this year.
In any case, I'll buy and play XIII-2 so you won't see me in this thread again for a while :p

Got to add that Crystal chronicles on cube was pretty fun. Also nothing can beat the chocobo racing game.

I loved FFXI, i have fond memories of me and a friend running a train of the big turtle enemies out of the mine early in the game outside and watch them kill noobs.

I played a shit load of it for a few months but stopped for whatever reason, i hated the fact that the boat rides weren't instant and i remember fishing on it with some friends and a giant mob came on board and i ran inside and it killed my friend.

Had a lot of fun moments in it, i loved the user store stuff as well, looking back i really wish i spent more time with it.

I'm going to wait after I finish XIII-2 for this, but there are still some FFs in my backlog, would be a good reason to finally finish this. I still have to finish 4 Heroes of Light, IVDS, IV CC (does this have a screenshot function?), FF CC, FFVI GBA, FFT:WotL. Sucks most of these are handheld games, which means I can't easily make screenshots. And if I also count PSN and VC version that I haven't finished I could add FF7,FF8,FF9 (PSN) and FF6 and Mystic Quest Legend (VC). Hmm....I could easily run through Mystic Quest before XIII-2.

Btw. wasn't there someone who made a thread like this last year? Did he ever get further than FF2?

Currently playing through VI. While VII will always be my favorite, VI does a lot of amazing things for game made in its time. The story for one is great. It's hard for me to keep interested in older RPGs but VI does an amazing job of it. I also love seeing bits and pieces of the steam punk aesthetic making its way into the game. That's one of the main reasons why I love VII so much, is because of the art direction.

Also, Mystic Quest anyone????? This being my first FF game, I have no shame in saying I love it. I know it's all nostalgia at this point, but I still love it. The music was great! I also love hearing all the hate people have towards it.

Man, that was my first FF too. Fond memories and I think my first real introduction to an RPG that wasn't Zelda.

Well, you can wait for X when the remake arrives on PS3. I also have the dilemma of having a PS3 Slim and was excited to hear about this news.

Yes, I sold my PS2 because of the promise of backwards compatibility, like I had with my first three PS3's :(

damn that YLOD :(

This is sad just a couple weeks ago I got rid of a couple of my favorite PS2 games (FFX, FFXII,Okami and KH2) didn't see any reason to hang onto them as my PS3 fat died over a year ago. Now this comes along and I want to play FFXII again. Maybe they will remake/re-release XII again for the vita/ps3.

As a Final Fantasy neofit, I am in for FFI to FFVI. The only mainline FF games that I have ever played are IV and VI, and that was many years ago.

I am doing this on portables. I have bought most of the portable remakes with the intention of doing something like this some day.

My list; it will take me all 2012:

- Final Fantasy I GBA
- Final Fantasy I PSP
- Final Fantasy II GBA
- Final Fantasy II PSP
- Final Fantays III DS
- Final Fantasy IV GBA (Europe)
- Final Fantasy IV DS
- Final Fantasy IV Complete + Interlude + The After Years PSP
- Final Fantasy V GBA
- Final Fantasy VI GBA

Depending on how it goes I will consider either the SNES versions of IV, V and VI (emulator) or some of the "newer" games.

I think making my way through XII IZJS is a big enough challenge for now. I started last night in PCSX2, but need to spend some time tweaking settings.

Outside of that, I'd like to replay III (DS) and probably V (GBA).

After some thought, I think this is how I'll tackle this.

FFI: Fresh start, with a party I don't normally use. Maybe something like no-fighters. I dunno yet.
FFII: No effing way. Not again.
FFIII: Already halfway through the iOS port, so I'll just finish that up.
FFIV: Picked up the PSP version awhile back, so once I fix my PSP I'll try that one out.
FFV: I'll wait for the FFVFJF.
FFVI: My favorite. Will boot up the GBA version at some point. Fresh start.
FFVII: Fresh start as well.
FFVIII: I've never done a low-level run but always wanted to...
FFIX: I started playing through this again a few months ago and am on disc 3 (I think). I'll just continue that.
FFX: Had the international version patched on my computer, maybe like 1/3 of the way through...I'll keep that going.
FFXII: Had ZJS started on the computer, but no real progress made (still in Rabanastre).
FFXIII: Finishing that up currently.
FFXIII-2: Will work on it after FFXIII.

I think I’ll join in!

As for ‘Origins’ being the definitive version for FFI, does it have the higher difficult similar to the original? The PSP remake is too easy. Also, what changes did they make to the Origins version?

Eh I have complete every modern era FF (7 up) with the exception of X-2 and XIII. I am currently working to finish FFXIII ahead of FFXIII-2 arriving at my house.

I am not really liking FFXIII outside the battle system. Story just... sucks.

Yes, you can select the difficulty when you start a new game.

Also, what changes did they make to the Origins version?
It's still got the old magic system (with magic levels and limited uses per level) instead of MP and the graphics are more similar to the style of the Wonderswan remakes. It misses the bonus dungeons of the GBA and PSP remakes, though.
If you meant compared to the original: There are some tweaks like that you won't miss if you killed an enemy after entering a command and something with reviving, I don't remember exactly. I think you can turn them off, if you want too.
