Slow PS3 download speeds

I see this issue a lot on gaf and lately it's just rediculous for me. It took me over an hour the other night to download an update for Killzone 3. This is absurd... Especially with how often you have to update the ps3.. Is there a reasoning behind this? My ps3 is connected through wifi, as is my 360 and Wii which have no trouble at all downloading files. Any ideas?

Maybe it's a router setting? What is your NAT type? It took me 12 minutes to download the demo for Binary Domain the other day.

As far as I've been able to tell, it's an issue with the PS3. I've got a 60gig fat, and it's slow over wifi and wired. My 40gig fat is way faster. I've tried every imaginable network and router setting, as well as 4 different routers. It's always the same.

Seriously, all your problems will be gone.

Wifi on the PS3 is terrible.

PS3 nearly maxes my connection via ethernet and works excellent over WiFi as well (although I haven't tested the exact speed). PS3 40GB 2007 here.

Yes. I had the same issue a couple of years ago. My PS3 (wireless at the time) went from having pretty good download speeds to almost nonexistent, while every other device was fine. Hardwired it, and haven't had a problem since. I understand that some peoples' setups might not allow for it, but if it's possible, I can't recommend it enough.

So it sounds like its a problem with the older models? Mine is the 80gb bc model. I guess I could get a long cord but I'd hate to go that route

No matter what I do, my PS3 downloads stuff at about 1/20th the speed of my 360. I hate, hate, HATE PS3 updates because they take me at least 45 minutes, and sometimes 2-3 hours.

I have 30 down/20 up service too, so it's not me...

Edit: I have a launch 60GB model, just for clarification.

That is so weird. My launch PS3 has always been fine. Even over Wi-Fi 50 meters away from the the router through several concrete walls.

I have mine wired, have a strong Internet connection, and I still get miserable download speeds compared to Xbox Live and Steam. Recently, the Reckoning demo took nearly twice as long to download than it did via Xbox Live. PSN may be free, but it is very expensive in regards to time whenever an update occurs.

I'm still rocking the 20GB (so no wifi) and I get slow downloads all the damn time. Was one of the main reasons why I quit using PSN.

I have a 2008 PS3 and I used to have trouble with download speeds over wifi but not anymore. One day my download speed problems just magically went away. This wifi issue is so bizarre. I've read some people think this may be a compatibility issue with some routers but I didn't change routers.

Chances are it was an issue related to their Content Distribution Network in your neck of the woods, and it was fixed when they invested more or rebalanced their number of servers or whatever.

I should've mentioned that I didn't have download speed issues when connected with ethernet. Only wifi.

Wi-Fi is horribly slow on my PS3 (80GB MGS4 Bundle) but I dealt with it for years because I didn't want to run a second Ethernet cable through my walls (my 360 is wired). Two months ago I finally discovered Ethernet switches so now my PS3 is wired and just as fast as my 360.

My ISP has remote access to my WAN router and they can update the firmware as well as change settings remotely. Maybe a remote firmware update fixed yours.

First things first get a good router. Update the routers firmware. Then give your PS3 a static IP address. Next add your ps3's ip address to the DMZ in your router. go to http://portforward.com/ select your make and model of your router then select PlayStation Network and follow the instructions.

My Wifi is slow as well, I use it only for just normal stuff like browsing psn or using the friendlist, when I download stuff I usually have to plug in my network cable.

Not sure if security settings matters, I think I'm on WPA, my friend have this problem too with his wifi

This is the fat 40gig

i noticed this since day 1 with my fat 60gig ps3.

slower than expected speeds when using wireless (xbox is faster).

speed is fine with a wired connection.

i just assumed the wireless chip in the ps3 was crap.

I used to get terrible wifi download speeds on my old 60GB plus only 50% signal strength. Once it died and I got a 320GB I started getting really good speeds and 90%-100% signal strength.

So yeah, the wifi on the old models is balls.

I've seen this a lot too, people commenting about it, and my anecdotal evidence of it too. ANd so often you see, "oh, it must be your router" explanation. Well, I have a PS3 and one of my close friends has one (comparatively, most of my friends have 360s, it's just the console we all usually play on), and since forever, the PS3 has downloaded far slower than my 360, and my friend corroborates. ~100 MB updates to games take 5 - 7 minutes to download, which is ridiculous.

For some info, I have a 100Megabit downstream, one of the fastest consumer-level downstreams in the US. I regularly download on the 360, my laptops, computers, mobile devices, and so on, at normal, high speeds. The PS3 slow download is with both WiFi and wired, and it's a major pain in the ass... and it's been at three separate residences, with two different ISPs (Verizon and now Charter), and with a number of different NATs.

My house, currently, has a pretty complex NAT system... Modem brings the internet into the house, splits off into an 8-port wireless N, which then diverts one cable down into my basement into a business-grade 24-port switch, which I then run 5 wires from that up to the bedrooms & office on my first floor. From there, each bedroom has 4 port switches that divide up between devices. With 100Mb coming in, usually each room gets about ~25Mb to split up amongst 4 devices. Generally, it's very rare to ever hit 25Mb on any device because the service you're using (XBL, or some consumer-grade FTP, hosting services, etc) is rarely going to dish 25Mb to you. But, still, on my PC I usually get about 4 - 6 mega bytes per second on high quality connections, X-Box live I can't measure it, but I download 2GB files quickly, within 5 - 10 minutes.

So, maybe it is my router settings, but even if it is, I come back to blaming the PS3 or PSN for this, because why the hell should every other device (including a personal home server, numerous multi-OS computers, mobile devices, game consoles, printers, etc) work pretty much flawlessly and at high speeds, and then my state-of-the-art PS3 runs at a ridiculous fraction of the speed of everything else?

rant over, srry.

(edit: I have an old 60gb PS3, fat boy)

The reason why I say this is a PS3s wifi fault, possibly on just some models, is that I have two routers, one with WPA and another with just MAC access restriction, and both have the same problem, yet both perform fine with it wired.

People that are having slow download speeds, does it make playing online impossible as well?
No, but I would get dced sometimes in GT5. It was rare though.

I do have a Verizon router so that could have happened. The PS3's wifi seems to be really finicky(at least with the older fat models). I didn't have issues with any of my other wifi devices.

I have had 3 different PS3s and 2 different wireless routers. The download speed over WIFI is horrible with either router or PS3. Wired the connection is great. I gave up on the wireless and just hardwired.

PS3 just has a terrible network adapter.I used to get pretty incredible download speeds over wifi (1 mb/s range) but after getting a new router the speeds just came crashing down. I have to used a bridged wired connection now and I still get the DNS errors every hour or so that kicked me off PSN.

My PSN download speeds have been excruciatingly slow lately. I've always had mine connected with wifi and it has been alright. Not the best of download speeds, but decent enough. Over the past month or so however, I've noticed that it has been considerably slower than it has ever been. It took hours to download some of the recent demo's that have been out, whereas it would have been done a lot quicker in the past.
I haven't made any recent changes to my router or setup. No idea why it's happening...

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Took me 13hrs to download 15gb for DC Universe the other day, yet to download the latest Project C.A.R.S demo through uTorrent I was getting 1.3mb per sec.

I know a lot of people have this problem -- I have too, occasionally, mostly during peak hours -- but the vast majority of the time my PS3 (connected over Wi-fi) comes close to maxing out my bandwidth. Average download speed tends to fluctuate between 1 and 1.3 MB/s, which is pretty respectable for 802.11g. Not to mention, the router is on a different floor from the console.

It just sucks that it's so uneven for many folks.

I have FIOS, and my PS3 is wired directly to my router; downloading is slow as fuck* compared to my 360. I don't even ask why anymore, I just accept.

I have had 2 60gb fat ps3's, and now I have a slim ps3. I have been connected with wifi and with wire. And I had slow speeds on all of them.. Tried new router, static IP adress, DMZ etc. Nothing seemed to help. I have a 10/1 mbit connection, but the download speed where realy slow most of the time...but then I disabled the media server on the ps3, and TADA, speeds are fine now. They are not near 10mbit, but it is about the same as my pc with torrents.

So try to disable media server, might help, it helped me.
